WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
(Staff Columnist Jenny O' Bryan looks at the preseason WNIT and Louisville's involvement as well as "V-dubs" interest in Louisville WBB. Yes, it's June and we're still talking hoops! BE sure to catch further discussion on both these items on our Saturday morning broadcast at Crescent Hill Radio. Less than five months before the thrill and excitement of women's college basketball returns to the KFC YUM! Center.)
University of Louisville Women’s basketball has one remaining member of the incoming class who has yet to be looked at here at Cardinal Couple. Starr Breedlove is not yet on campus. I am going to forgo talking about her this week to bring you some exciting basketball news. We will take a look at Breedlove next week.

It was mentioned here
several weeks ago that the women’s basketball team has been invited to
participate in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The first round pairings have
been released and Louisville will host Loyola University Chicago on Saturday,
November 9 at The Yum Center. The first
round action kicks off Friday, November 8.
The WNIT guarantees a three game
minimum format. The sites of the second
round matchups will be determined after the results of all first round
games. Second round games will be played
November 10-11, semifinals November 14 and the championship on Sunday, November
17. Consolation matches for the teams
who lose in the first rounds will have brackets redrawn based on the geography
of the teams in the field.
Loyola University Chicago’s
head coach, Sheryl Swoopes, will debut in her first game as a coach against the
Cardinals. Swoopes is retired from the WNBA. Among her many accolades she holds the honor
of being the first player signed in to the WNBA.
This is quite a coaching
debut for Swoopes. She will bring her
team in to one of the greatest arenas in women’s basketball, among one of the
best fan bases in the country, against the Cardinal’s runner up team who return
every starter. That is a pretty big
stage for one’s first game as a coach.
Tickets to the event are a part of your season ticket package. IF you are not a season-ticket holder, why not become one today?

Some promising recruiting
news hit the internet and social media sites on Tuesday.
2014 guard/ forward Victoria
Vivians has narrowed her list of schools to 4.
The 6th ranked player from Forest, MS, and recent Miss
Basketball, includes Louisville, Kentucky, Florida and Mississippi State.
Vivians is considered the
most prolific scorer in her class and scored over 1400 points, averaged 39.7 ppg , 15.1
rebounds, 4 steals and 1 block last season.
Vivians has already made
unofficial visits to Louisville, Kentucky, and Mississippi State and intends to
visit Florida this weekend. She will
make official visits to all four schools this fall and hopes to make her decision
in September or October.
Vivians is quoted as saying
she likes everything about all four schools, the environment, coaching staffs and
styles of play. She has over a dozen
offers from other schools such at Tennessee, Baylor, Duke, and Stanford.

Hearing Sydney Moss is looking at us and WVU. Do we have room?
ReplyDeleteDepends on who comes in for 2014, since she'd have to sit a year. Currently her coach is blocking any transfer to a BCS program...which is a bit weird, since this is basketball, not football. Arianna Freeman and Syd Brackemyer are the two confirmed so far for 2014. We graduate Asia Taylor, Shoni, Nita Slaughter, Sherrone Vails and maybe Tia? (Not sure on her status). So, technically there woul be a spot for Moss...but a lot of hoops to jump through still...especially in Gainesville, where apparantly they are still bitter about the Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville.
