Cards WBB reloads on the coaching front too -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 BRADBURY, BERNABEI-MCNAMEE JOIN WALZ STAFF

Joanna Bernabei-McNamee

Jeff Walz has had a multitude of assistant coaches in his 20 years at Louisville. Beginning with Steph Norman and other notables such as Sam Purcell, Adrienne Johnson, Cam Newbauer, Beth Burns and recently adding two former head coaches to join "J.P." and Brittany Morris on staff, Walz seems to always have a smart, basketball savvy and experienced crew joining him on the Cardinals bench and in practice.

Joanna Bernabei-McNamee was named to the staff a couple days ago. A lot of you will remember her being a head coach at ACC foe Boston College, but her association with Walz goes back way further than that. She and Walz were on Brenda Frese's staff at Maryland when they won the NCAA.

Jeff Walz recently spoke about the newest assistant...Mike Bradbury:

"Adding Mike Bradbury to our staff is about bringing in a coach with a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. He's been a head coach, he's navigated the challenges of building programs and he understand what it takes to compete at a high level."

Bradbury has been the head coach at Morehead, Wright State and the past ten years at New Mexico.

One has to wonder if the hires also might be Walz auditioning them for a possible head job replacing him at Louisville when he retires. Walz current contract has him at $1 million dollars a year and runs through March 2029. He's accomplished quite a bit in his time at Louisville...the only glaring thing off his resume is a national championship title.

Not saying Walz is out the door here after two more seasons, you did not hear that from me. One of his mentors...Geno at UConn continues to rule of the dynasty that is in Storrs, CT.  Of course, Geno has Chris Dailey on his staff...Walz has never given an assistant the equal coaching platform and duties Geno and Chris share. Steph Norman would probably be the closest.

With three new players transferring in, who knows how many freshmen and two new coaches, one could almost call them a "new look" UofL women's team....sure...established stars Roberts, Randolph, Elif and Berry will be on every opposing coaches coaches "mut contain" list... but three established players coming in via transfer and the promise of Bender, Mbugna and Putra make the Cards a top contender for 2026-27.

Is it WBB season yet?

Oh, btw...in case you have forgotten. your taxes are due today.

More Cardinal Callups -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

VolleyCards to Represent Team USA

Last week I wrote about callups to the US National Team on the soccer side, but this week that trend continues with a pair of volleyball players set to represent the Stars and Stripes. Kalyssa Blackshear and Payton Petersen were announced yesterday to be joining the Team USA U21 squad in late June. The two Cardinals will camp with 25 other athletes in Columbus, Ohio, where they will compete for an opportunity to represent Team USA at the NORCECA U21 Pan American Cup.

Of the 27 athletes invited to the training camp, just half (14) will be selected for the event roster. The camp will be a shade under two weeks long from June 26 to July 5th, and the Pan American Cup will be hosted in Columbus July 7-12. This opportunity marks the second chance with the national team for Blackshear. Kalyssa was an alternate on the U19 team that took silver at the 2025 World Championship in Croatia. Payton Petersen is receiving a callup for the first time.

image via gocards.com

While the training camp roster is quite varied from an athlete standpoint, the coaches all come from the professional ranks. The head coach is Tama Miyashiro, currently on staff with LOVB Salt Lake. The native of Hawai'i was a libero at Washington from 2006-2009, and she was twice named National Defensive Player of the Year. Miyashiro represented Team USA on the court from 2010-2012. She's assisted by Alfee Reft, who is currently the head coach of LOVB San Francisco, and Alisha Childress (Glass), who is a setter for MLV Las Vegas. Reft played for the USMNT after graduating from the University of Hawai'i and has been in the coaching realm since 2010. Glass was a standout at Penn State and was part of the team that won 102 straight games and won the titles in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

On the player side, Louisville is one of five universities with multiple representatives, joined by Minnesota, Nebraska, SMU, and Texas. Texas leads the way with four selections, while Nebraska has three. Minnesota and SMU match Louisville's two. Surprisingly, Stanford and Pitt were both limited to one selection, making the ACC representation just six. Also sending one representative are Creighton, Florida, Iowa State, USC and Utah, along with seven high schools from six states.

It would be wonderful for one or both of the Louisville players to make the team, but as I mentioned last week, the experience itself is invaluable.

Until next time, Go Cards!

SOFTBALL SLUGS PAST NOTRE DAME 13-5 -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOOKADOO'S BIG DAY HELPS CARDS DOWN IRISH

A huge day at the plate for Cards junior Camryn Lookadoo against UND.

Three for four at the plate with two home runs, a double and seven RBI's for the Georgetown, KY native. Yes, she alone drove in more runs than the Notre Dame squad and the first baseman improved her season batting average to .405 for the season.

The Cards were "right for the fight" today (sorry, UK) with seven runs in the first two innings. Alyssa Zabala surely loved that offense barrage to make thing less stressful for her in the circle.  Now 10-4 on the season, Zabala's stats for the game were allowing two runs on six hits in three innings of pitching.

UofL jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and the only Notre Dame softball student-athlete has was finding any success Sunday was Lily Hagan..who had two home runs and four RBI's.

The Cards...now 34-9 overall and 10-5 in conference...returns back to Ulmer Stadium to host IU in a non-conference tilt Wednesday April 15th at 8 p.m.

Softball wins, Lacrosse loses in Saturday action -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS OUTSLUG NOTRE DAME IN SOUTH BEND. LAX FALLS TO PITT IN THE L.L.S.

A good and bad day for UofL spring women's sports.

Softball travelled to South Bend and out hit the Irish softball squad for a 8-5 win.The LaxCards hosted the Panthers and took #24 Pitt to overtime but fell 15-14 to the visitors.

SOFTBALL USES FIVE RUN FIFTH INNING TO GET BY IRISH.

Louisville visited the Irish in South Bend and got two good pitching performances...one out of Brooke Gray for the win, to go 10-1 on the season...and from Jayden Gohs in relief to clinch it and get her second save credit of the season. The 8-5 UofL win tied the three game series at 1-1.

Louisville struck first in the contest when they put two on the board in the top of the first. Madison Pickens picked up two RBI's when she singled home Chelsea Mack and Bri Despines. The Irish would chip away at Cards hurler Brooke Gray for four innings, picking up runs in the second. third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

The Cards erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. The scoring began when Easton Lotus smashed a double down the right field line that scored Chelsea Mack. Camryn Lookadoo doubled to right center to bring Lotus and Despines to the plate. Then, Madison Pickens sent one out over right field fence...scoring her and Lookadoo. That made it 7-3 UofL and the Cards just had to get nine more outs.

Notre Dame wasn't ready to leave the ball park yet, though. They homered off Gray in the bottom of the fifth, and put runners on the bags...which effectively sent the UofL pitcher to the sidelines. Anna Wise came in and got the Cards out of the fifth by allowing just two runs. Jayden Gohs got the final six outs in the sixth and seventh innings for Louisville.

UofL would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Easton Lotus scored from first on a Despines double.

The squads finish the series today with a 1 p.m. start .

LAX LOSES IN OVERTIME TO PITT.

(photo from UofL)

A thriller but overtime 15-14 loss for Louisville Lacrosse today against #24 Pitt.

Kaitlyn Giandonato scored for the Panthers with a minute and a half left in the extra session for UPitt to end the sudden victory session.

Pitt began the contest with a 4-0 lead at the L.L.S. The Cards were able to fight back by the end of the period and make it a 4-3 Pitt lead. Both team were having success in finding goals in the second quarter and the contest was tied at halftime 8-8.

Louisville came out with a roar in the third period and took a 11-8 lead on goals by Charlotte Jackson and two goals from Ella Berg. Berg also assisted on Jackson's goal. Pitt responded to tie it at 11-11 and edged ahead at the end of the third 13-12 . The fourth period was one where Pitt went up 14-12 but Louisville rallied to tie it on goals by Reese Whitman and Rian Adams...and force the extra session.

The Cards drop to 6-8 on the season..and 2-7 in ACC play...while Pitt improves to 8-7 and 4-6 in conference.

SB Drops Game 1; LAX Senior Day -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Softball Falls 5-2 at ND

In a game that wrapped up scoring early, Louisville was unable to keep their early lead against the Irish in the series opener. The Cards scored a pair in the first inning, but gave up five in the bottom of the second. Neither team crossed the plate for the remainder of the game. The two teams will be back in action today at 1PM.

Easton Lotus reached base from the second spot in the batting order before Bri Despines doubled her home. Camryn Lookadoo singled, and an error helped score Despines to give the Cards the 2-0 lead. Alyssa Zabala got the start for Louisville and had to walk a tightrope in the first inning. She gave up a walk and single to open, but managed to escape the inning without giving up a run.

Louisville went 1-2-3 in the second, and ND was ready to pounce. Zabala got a fly out to open the inning, but ND would go on to pick up five hits and profit from two Louisville errors in the inning to score five runs. The Cards put a runner on base in the third, but couldn't bring her home. Zabala got two outs to open the inning, seemingly settling back in, but a four-pitch walk spelled the end of her day. Brooke Gray came in to relieve her.

Gray was incredibly efficient. She pitched the remaining 3.1 innings (ND didn't bat in the bottom of the 7th) and gave up just three hits. She had one strikeout, and used just 38 pitches. Of those 38 (fewer than four per out), 27 were strikes. Gray gave the Cards a chance to get back into the game, but Brianne Weiss on the other side was too good. She threw 118 pitches in a complete game to ice the Cards. Louisville had just five hits and two walks in the game. Despines' double in the first was Louisville's only extra base hit.

Lax Hosts Pitt for Senior Day

Louisville lacrosse has flagged a bit of late. They beat Cal to keep their ACC tournament hopes alive, then gutted out a 5-4 win over Vanderbilt, but a tough 10-12 loss to Virginia was followed by a 22-5 thumping at the hands of Stanford. The Cards will host Pittsburgh, ranked 25th in the country, today at noon for Senior Day.

Ahead of today's game, Louisville will honor their seven seniors. Many are names with which we've become quite familiar. The others have given a lot to the program over the years, even if they haven't seen as much playing time. Honorees will be Rian Adkins, Aubrey Bagenstose, Karlie Harnischfeger, Sophie Macleod, Maggie McMahon, Erin Nicholson, and Cece Reilly.

After today's game, Louisville will wrap up the season on the road against Notre Dame on Thursday. With only eight teams making the ACC tournament, the Cards are just about officially out of contention. With two possible wins remaining, they'd need a pair of losses by Virginia to tie the Cavaliers, but they'd still lose the tiebreaker based on the head-to-head loss. A three-way tie between Louisville, UVA, and Pitt is possible, but I don't think Louisville comes out of that one favorably. Nevertheless, four wins would be a high-water mark for Scott Teeter in ACC play, and it would give the Cards an overall record above .500, so they'll still be motivated.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Softball faces Notre Dame in three game series -- Friday Cardinal Couple

32-8 LOUISVILLE SOFTBALL TRAVELS TO SOUTH BEND

A crucial three game series with the Irish in South Bend begins today.

It's a 5 p.m start and will be on the ACCNX broadcast network. Louisville hopes to keep pace with the three teams above them in the ACC standings and maybe even gain ground on them .

Notre Dame is not having the best of seasons. They are 16-23 overall and 5-10 in the ACC. It's a "Strikeout for Cancer" weekend in the Melissa Cook Stadium on the South Bend campus

Notre Dame is 29-20 all-time against the Cards and have won six of the last nine matchups against the UofL squad. The Irish are led by Mickey Winchell, who is hitting .400 against the Cards in her Notre Dame career.

Notre Dame is a fairly young squad, with just three seniors and one graduate student. They have no student-athletes from Kentucky, but 10 from California. The Irish have lost their last four games...three to league leading FSU in Tallahassee and one to Valparaiso in South Bend. . We'll have the results here for you tomorrow and the rest of the series on Saturday and Sunday .

WBB Coaching Carousel -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SPECULATING ON WHO WALZ WILL BRING IN

Gee, we have seen a lot of assistant and associate coaches come and go for the Louisville WBB  program. Looking back just seven years ago, Walz's staff was Sam Purcell, Steph Norman, Johnneisha Pineda and Beth Burns....although Burns was not officially classified as an assistant. These days,  Purcell, of course, is the head coach at Mississippi State,Norman is an associate head coach at Arizona State, Burns is an associate head coach at USC (Southern California) and Pineda is the only one left at Louisville. Shay Robinson has arrived and departed...joining Florida's staff as an assistant. Amanda Butler came for a cup of coffee and then split for Charleston to become their head coach .

I guess the question is...who will Walz bring in to replace Shay Robinson and Amanda Butler?

There is a lot of public outcry to have Kasa Robinson join the staff. I'd venture it's be hard to get her off the Marshall WBB staff where she is an assistant, and goes by Mykasa Lucas, since she married Jordan Lucas...who played at Penn State and several NFL squads. I don't see her coming back, but I hope I am wrong.

Will Walz follow his previous trend of hiring assistants from other programs? My guess is that there's more than a few resumes on his desk in the Kueber Center from aspiring hopefuls.

And, if that isn't enough, longtime director of video and graphics Lamont Russell will be leaving also to be the director of player development for the Dallas Wings. It was always a pleasure to run into Lamont in the basketball offices and at games when I was more mobile

College basketball is an ever changing world anymore, with the NIL implementation and the advent of players getting five years of eligibility proposal and discussion . Let's see what that does to the power structure of the traditionally strong programs like UCLA, UConn, South Carolina., Tennessee. Louisville, Duke, LSU and others.

Yes, indeed...interesting times ahead.

Cards Called Up -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Bard, Cantu Earn USWNT Attention

Louisville women's soccer saw two players invited to camp with the US Women's National Team youth programs this month, with announcements coming yesterday. Rising sophomore Ella Bard and incoming freshman Cate Cantu heard their names called as they'll join camps for the U-20 and U-18 teams, respectively. Bard will camp in Kansas City 4/7-4/16 with two opportunities to play against Brazil on 4/11 and 4/15. Cantu will camp in West Palm Beach 4/10-4/17. No international friendlies are listed for that one.

Ella Bard's call-up to the U-20 team indicates that she has impressed the USWNT staff so far in her development. Bard was called up to the U-19 team in October, missing time with UofL to take part in friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Portugal. In February, she joined that team again to play against Czechia, Wales, and Portugal. This time, an invite to U-20 camp means that Bard is a serious contender to be a part of the team which will participate in the Women's U-20 World Cup in Poland in September. A call up in that window would surely be difficult for the Cards in the early season, as Bard figures to move into a full-time starting role on defense, but the experience she could gain would be unmatched.

Cate Cantu is a name that is likely more unknown to Louisville fans. While Bard made a quick name for herself as a freshman last season, making her debut in the Vanderbilt game and earning her first start against Wright State, Cantu hasn't yet made it to campus. Cantu is an incoming goalkeeper, which is a position you might remember as recently vacated. (Happy belated birthday to the new Racing Louisville keeper, Erynn Floyd, by the way.) Cate has the opportunity to claim that position right out of the gate. If she does so, she could become the third straight long-term starter to claim the job as a freshman, following Floyd and Gabby Kouzelos. Cantu was a three-time All Central League First Team selection in Pennsylvania, and she was a High School All-American as a senior. Her club team, Penn Fusion, were ECNL National Champions in 2024. Cantu will be competing for the starting spot against Brielle Baker, who is the only returning goalkeeper from last season's roster.

While players missing time is difficult for a college team, the opportunity to play for your country are invaluable for both the player and the team. Players get the chance to fulfill lifelong dreams and play against some of the top competition the world has to offer. Teams get to reap the benefits of the additional experiences the players gain as well as show recruits how much they support player development. We see the same with Jeff Walz and basketball all the time. Showing recruits that you're not just going to make them good enough to play for their national team, but that you will also give them the freedom to make the most of those opportunities, is quite enticing.

All the best to Ella and Cate in the coming weeks.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Softball CARDS in logjam behind FSU and Duke -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Louisville in fourth place in ACC

There are a couple of clear leaders in the ACC Softball race this season.

FSU and Duke sit atop the conference with the best records. The Seminoles are 12-0  in ACC play and 35-4 overall. Duke is 13-2 in the ACC and 28-11 on the season. Not too far back is Virginia Tech with a 9-3 conference mark and 33-5 overall. The Cards check in at fourth...at 8-4 in the league and 32-8 this season.

Virginia (9-5) and Stanford (9-6) are hot on the heels of the top four and North Carolina is the only other team with an above .500 conference mark at 8-7.It's important to note that the top four finishers in the league will receive a bye in first round ACC Softball Tournament action and only 12 of the 15 teams that play softball in the ACC make the tournament If the tournament were to start tomorrow...the other five teams that would qualify would be Clemson, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Notre Dame and NC State.  All told, the teams play in 24 conference games.

The Cards have three games left against each of these fellow league members....Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and NC State. The cards will travel to South Bend for that UND series, Pitt and Syracuse will come to Ulmer Stadium in Louisville and the Cards will travel to Raleigh for the NC State series. The ACC Tournament will be in Charlottesville this year...hosted by Virginia. May 6-9 in the tournament dates...that's is the week after Derby....which is May 2nd.

The Cards have an advantage in getting to play Pitt and Syracuse in Ulmer.

The Cards vs Notre Dame series starts Friday.

Louisville is 9-1 in their last 10 games and has been on a hitting tear the last three games...scoring 25 runs. In addition to conference battles ahead, the Cards still have the second rivalry game against UK in Ulmer and also a game against IU.

Let's hope the old adage of "April Showers bring May Flowers" doesn't rain out any of the Cards remaining games and that we don't get any mid-April or later snow in the area. I can remember snow back in 1989 on Derby Day...by then I had stopped attending the event and was hitting an annual Derby party.

The WBB season ends...UCLA proves me wrong by showing they are the best team -- Monday Cardinal Couple

UCLA BLOWS OUT SOUTH CAROLINA IN SECOND HALF.

I step back and admit I am wrong.

I said, a few weeks back, that UConn was the best team in Division I WBB.

When South Carolina ended their season with a surprising blowout, it led me to think that the Gamecocks would do the same to the Lady Bruins.  But, after a half, this one was already close to being over at 36-23 UCLA.. the 79-51 final unfolded in almost unbelievable fashion. Dawn Staley's gals couldn't buy a basket with gold standard cash money.

As a buddy remarked to me..."When's the last time you saw a bunch of white girls beat a bunch of black girls in D1 action?" Putting the unintended racial profiling aside, she made a good point. I guess none of us figured that Lauren Betts and Gabriella Jaquez would shut out the "cocks" inside and dominate on the offensive boards. Maybe we should have opened our eyes a little wider.

After all, UCLA came into the contest with just one loss all season. Yes, it was early on, against South Carolina...but this was NCAA Tournament time and many critics were saying that UCLA was the best team in the nation. I was still in the UConn camp.

I guess I didn't read the signs correctly either.

Isla, we hardly knew you...Good luck

For Louisville, the upcoming few weeks could prove to be very interesting. The height that the Cards had is disappearing quickly. Between graduation and the transfer portal . Juffermans and Hardy are in the portal. .Ziegler has graduated. Istanbulluoglu and Putra are back, along with Mbugna. It looks like Roberts and Randolph will hang with the Cards, and that alone will make Louisville a bona fide ACC title contender.

They don't have a Betts on their roster though...and that's what it took this year to best the rest.

GOOD AND BAD DAY FOR LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S SPORTS IN CALIFORNIA -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

SOFTBALL WINS BIG, LACROSSE LOSES BIG ON WEST COAST.

Two different tales on the Saturday Louisville women's sports activities in California.

Louisville Softball had batting practice in their final game in the California series, hammering the Golden Bears 12-2  Louisville Lacrosse got whacked around by Stanford  22-5 out on "The Farm".

SOFTBALL SUCCESS ON CAL PITCHING 12-2

Alyssa Zabala

Holly Aprile's "hit and pitch Cards" unleashed the bats against the Cal pitching staff in the 12-2 massacre. Early in the ballgame, it looked like Cal might be the team to take the final game in the series, scoring two runs in their first at bat against Louisville...but the Cards Alyssa Zabala settled down and the Cards took a 3-2 lead after two.

The contest stayed at 3-2 until the top of the fifth. UofL brought the bats out for a little more exercise and posted six runs against the Bears to go up 9-2 . Three more runs in the top of the seventh created the final 12-2 blasting.

This wasn't normally how Louisville unloads on a foe. Not a slap hit, walk and sac fly type of offense at all. The Cards got home runs from Jordan Williams, Bri Despines and Madison Pickens and doubles from Pickens, Riley Janda and Camryn Lookadoo that accounted for 11 of their 12 runs to cross the plate.

Zabala got the win and turned the ball over to Jayden Gohs after four innings for the completion. The win was "Smiley's" ninth of the season.

STANFORD FILLS THE NETS AGAINST LAX CARDS 22-5

For as much success as the Softball Cards had against Cal, Louisville Lacrosse must have felt like they were in World War III and losing badly against the Stanford Laxers.

In this Cardinals ve Cardinal match on the turf...the home team scored first and had put six goals up on the UofL squad with almost four minutes left in the first period. And, in the second 15 minute stretch, Stanford increased a 6-2 lead to 11-2 halfway through the period.

 Halftime's scoreboard read Stanford 13- Louisville 3.

The third period must have seemed almost boring to the home fans...Stanford was only able to increase their lead to 14-5, The Trees were going to be winners...no doubt..and proved the point to Louisville with a 8-0 fourth period stick party against UofL's beleaguered defense. Everyone scored for Stanford except the concession stand workers.

22-5. Not pretty. Stanford was the seventh ranked team in DI WLAX going into the game and didn't hurt that standing one bit. They have the best record in the ACC also...at 10-2.  For Louisville..the loss takes them to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. Louisville was 43rd in the nation going into the match.

A JOYOUS EASTER TO YOU ALL...

From Cardinal Couple to all of you,  a joyous Easter to you. Remember, He died for your sins and He has risen. We hope the Easter bunny leaves you and yours baskets full of goodies.

Softball Evens Series -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Win 6-3 Over Cal

Louisville softball saw their long win streak end Thursday at Cal, but the Cards won yesterday evening (afternoon, depending on which timezone you use) to even the series at one game apiece. Louisville struck first, but they didn't hold the lead throughout. Ultimately, the Cards were able to put up more runs than Cal could answer with, though, and they held on to win to move to 31-8 (7-4).

Louisville put the first two runners on base with Chelsea Mack and Easton Lotus, and Bri Despines made it count early. A single scored Mack, and a Camryn Lookadoo sacrifice bunt moved the runners up one 60 more feet. A sac fly scored Lotus, and Louisville led 2-0 before the inning ended. Brooke Gray got the start and was rewarded with a bunt pop-out on her first pitch. She walked the second batter but the defense helped her out with a double-play to end the inning.

The Cards were unable to add to their lead in the second, and the middle of the Cal order jumped on Gray to open the bottom half. She gave up back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game at two before setting the next three batters down in order. The top of the third once more saw Louisville put a speedster on base to open the inning and a steal to threaten immediately. Despines grounded out but advanced Lotus to third, which turned out to be irrelevant when Lookadoo hit a ground-rule double to score the run. The Cards couldn't bring Lookadoo home, but Louisville had regained the lead 3-2.

Gray settled back in and put up a three-up, three-down inning in the bottom of the third. The Cards added to their lead in the fourth on four hits, including a two-RBI triple from Chelsea Mack. Mack was brought home by Lotus for the third run of the inning, and Louisville led 6-2. Gray would continue to pitch well, giving up just two more hits and two more walks over the next three scoreless innings. Louisville was unable to add any other runs, and Coach Holly Aprile made a quick decision to relieve Gray when she gave up a leadoff single to open the seventh.

Alyssa Zabala came in to close out the game, but not without a little drama. After a foul out, Zabala gave up a single to right center that allowed the leadoff runner to get all the way to third. A productive ground out advanced both runners, scoring one, but Zabala finished the Bears off with another ground out. Gray took the earned run, but she also finished with the win, moving her to 9-1 on the season. Louisville finished with the 6-3 victory.

The Cards and Bears will close out the series today at 3PM to give Louisville time to return home for the holiday before they head back out next weekend. Today's series finale will be on ACC Network Extra.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Cal knocks off Softball Cards 7-5 in Berkeley -- Friday Cardinal Couple

CAL'S BIG SECOND INNING SENDS CARDS TO THE LOSS

Normally, when you've got Alyssa Zabala on the mound it's usually a safe bet for the Cards . California must not have read the script, though...and posted four second inning runs on the Cards en route to a 7-5 victory at a high school softball field near Berkeley. (The Cal field is undergoing a major renovation,,,)

Jordan Williams

It was 5-1 Bears when the Cards came up in the top of the fourth and Louisville showed they still had a bit of life left in those Cardinals wings...when they got a Jordan Williams home run to left and then Riley Janda scored on a Easton Lotus single to make it 5-3.

A Cal run in the bottom of the fourth inning made is 6-3 home squad, but Louisville kept knocking at the door with a two run top of the fifth...when Jordan Williams drove in Madison Pickens and then Williams scored on a Cal fielding error. It was 6-5 Cal.

Unfortunately, that was the end of Louisville's scoring . The Bears added an unneeded insurance run in the sixth inning. A 7-5 win for California.

The two squads meet again today at 2 p.m.

Amanda Butler leaving Louisville for College of Charleston -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

BUTLER GOING FROM A CARDINAL TO A COUGAR

The word is out...Amanda Butler is leading Louisville to become the head coach at the College of Charleston. A return to the state of South Carolina, where she coached Clemson before becoming a Cardinals assistant.

The opening is there because of the past CofC coach Robin Harmony leaving the Cougars to become the head coach at Pitt. So, Harmony goes from being a Cougar to a Panther and sources close to Cardinal Couple, who have a great insight to the operations and workings of Cardinals basketball indicate the move was expected. We, of course are still the bad boys of journalistic media in UofL's eyes because of a hijacked Twitter account. All we can say i we have followed all the things to get us back in there but other forces are working to keep us out of the information loop.

Butler was aided in getting the job by Debbie Antonelli, a South Carolina resident and well respected college impressario and voice.

Butler said:

"This is a championship team with a opportunity to build a legacy. that is based on returning. John Groce touched on it a lot a lot more than I did...the challenge of a new landscape is being able to talk about that openly and honestly. But the reality is...how important is legacy to you?...How important is history to you? "

Let's not forget the valuable two years she spent under Jeff Walz about roster building and management,

The Cougar are in the CAA, or Colonial Athletic Association. She'll be facing school such as Campbell, Stony Brook, Elon, Monmouth, Towson and William and Mary. In the season just ended, CofC was conference champ at 16-2 and went 27-6 overall. They went into the NCAA Tournament as a #14 seed and was eliminated in the first round by Duke.

No immediate word on players returning or who recruiting will focus on. We also can't verify if Anaya Hardy, who is leaving the Cards roster will be going to CofC with Amanda. Hardy is the second Cardinal to announce they are entering the portal, along with Isla Juffermans. Also, Shay Robinson is leaving his assistant coaching position at Louisville to go to Florida. He's the one I always got mixed up with Lamont Russell.

We will watch with interest on who Walz gets in to replace them.  Only  Jonneshia Pineda and Brittany Morris remain on the WBB coaching tree along with Walz.

Cards Softball run rules EKU 12-4 in Richmond

CARDS GET 30th WIN OF THE SEASON AT EASTERN KENTUCKY

Madison Pickens

Louisville softball broke a 3-3 tie after an inning and put the bats on the ball in Richmond against EKU with 12 runs and 13 hits in a six-inning win Tuesday evening against the Colonels.

Madison Pickens had six RBI's for Louisville...as the Cards saw three EKU pitchers in the run-rule affair. She belted two three-run home runs against the home team's pitching. Bri Despines scored four runs in the Cardinals win

Alyssa "Smiley" Zabala

Holly Aprile gave four Louisville pitchers a turn in the circle...with the win going to Alyssa Zabala..who was the second Cards pitcher and went 3.2 innings...allowing no runs or hits and striking out six Colonels batters. Madi Reeves got the start but only lasted 1.1 innings before giving way to Zabala. Reeves gave up three runs on two hits and walked five in her start. Jayden Gohs started the sixth inning, but only went 1/3 of an inning,..throwing just 21 pitches before handing the ball to Anna Wise, who got the final two outs.

The Cards will head west to face California next to face the Golden Bears for three ACC games on Thursday,Friday and Saturday before retuning home on Easter.

WBB Final Four Set -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

All Chalk in Phoenix

South Carolina and Texas took care of business last night to close out the 2026 Regional Round and move to the Final Four in Phoenix. They joined UConn and UCLA, who did the same on Sunday night. That makes a clean sweep for 1-seeds in the tournament. However, for all of the talk about a lack of parity in women's college basketball, that argument is getting long in the tooth at this point. Does the cream still rise to the top? More often than not, yes. That said, this season marks the first final four made up of all 1-seeds since 2018, and it's just the second in a decade.

That 2018 Final Four also included Louisville, and it saw both games go to overtime. Louisville came out on the wrong end of their matchup against Mississippi State, but there's no need to relitigate that whole thing. State would go on to lose to Notre Dame in the final, after the Irish defeated UConn in the Final Four.

We'll see if the final four matchups are as close as that 2018 season, but the elite eight matchups certainly were not. Duke held their own the best, losing by the smallest margin, but their defeat at the hands of UCLA was still by 12 points. UConn won their third straight game of this tournament against ACC opponents, dismantling Notre Dame by 18. South Carolina made light work of TCU, winning by 26, but the jewel of the elite eight came in Louisville's region.

At the same time as the Cards were completely unraveling against Michigan on Saturday, Kentucky was doing largely the same against Texas. Like on the men's side, Louisville and Kentucky women were bounced from the tournament on the same day. Texas beat UK by 22, while Louisville lost to Michigan by 19. All that did for the Wolverines was set them up to get absolutely trounced. The Longhorns made their second-straight final four appearance by dominating Michigan 77-41. Yeesh.

The men's tournament will get the Saturday/Monday timeslots, so Texas and South Carolina draw the short straws by playing on just three-and-a-half days' rest with travel to Phoenix. The women's games will be played on Friday and the championship game will be Sunday, with a time still to be announced. This is the same final four as last season, but the matchups are different. UConn and South Carolina will play a rematch of the 2025 National Championship game, which saw the Huskies thump the Gamecocks 82-59. That game will start at 7:00PM on Friday. Scheduled for 9:30 (but actually tipping off 20 minutes after the horn of the first game if it runs long), the second game will feature UCLA and Texas. UCLA is seeking their first championship game appearance of the modern era, after last season was their first Final Four of the era. Texas is looking to make their first appearance in the championship game since winning it all in 1986. The Longhorns lost in the final four in 1987, 2003, and 2025.

Louisville will look to next season to reignite their hunt for their first national championship.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Softball shuts down Ga. Tech to sweep series -- Monday Cardnal Couple

3-1 Complete Game for Alyssa Zabala in win.

Since we have moved out of Cards WBB coverage for the time being, let's catch up on one of the spring sports at UofL. Louisville Softball picked up a nice win against Georgia Tech today at Ulmer Stadium to go 29-7 on the season and improve to 6-3 in the ACC. Alyssa Zabala went the distance in the circle for the Cards, picking up her seventh win of the season while allowing just three hits.

For 3- 1/2 innings, this one was a scoreless affair. The Cards finally broke through for a run when they managed to "fill the bags full of Cards" when Easton Lotus opened the bottom of the fourth with a single and Camryn Lookadoo and Madison Pickens were hit by pitches. Taylor Monroe sent a deep fly to center that was caught... but Lotus tagged and scored for UofL.

Ava is a junior for the Cards from Taunton, MA.

Ava Venturelli made it 2-0 Cards with a solo home run and the Cards added their final run of the game when Lookadoo hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Chelsea Mack.

Georgia Tech opened the seventh with a solo home run off Zabala, but she sent the Bees to the dugout out with three straight outs after that and ended the game.

The Cards return to action Tuesday when they travel to Richmond, KY to face Eastern Kentucky University. The Colonels are 18-15 on the season...but 11-4 at home. It's scheduled for an ESPN+ broadcast...starting at 6 p.m.

WBB falls to Michigan -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

CARDS BOW OUT OF NCAA TOURNAMENT 71-52 TO MICHIGAN

Louisville basketball was a bit like the old adage for March, which is that they came in like a lion and left like a lamb.

The Cards got off to a hot start against the Wolverines and led 13-4 after eight minutes played in the first quarter.  That lead was still viable after the first quarter at 15-9 and UofL was getting an All-American effort out of Elif Istanbulluoglu. The Cards were still controlling the action with 6:53 left in the first half at 25-14...and then the balloon burst. An 18-2 UofM run not only wiped out that double digit lead, but gave Michigan a 32-27 halftime lead.

How would the Cards react to this Michigan run as the squads came out for the second half? Maybe with their worst half of the season....

UofL did keep it close for a good part of the third quarter but Michigan took off on another 18-2 run and the Cards were staring at a scoreboard that said 57-40 Michigan after three quarters.

To put it simply, Louisville couldn't buy a basket. A 25-13 third quarter Michigan blitzkrieg had sent Louisville scratching their heads with 10 minutes to play.

Louisville would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way. The lack of rebounding, the failure to successfully figure out the press...things that will get you a loss every time.

And thus endeth a season that was very good, by most standards...but another Cardinals failure to reach a Great Eight.

It's a group with promise, The sophomore class is only going to get better, if they stay together as a unit. As for now, they'll dream of what could have been and head back home.

Softball Streak Continues -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Beat GT in Game 1

Louisville softball extended their season-high winning streak to eight games yesterday with a victory over Georgia Tech in the first game of their weekend series. The streak began with a win in the final game of the Clemson series, and last night's win over GT is Louisville's first ACC game since that Clemson win. The victory moved the Cards to 4-3 in conference, so a series win would keep Louisville over .500. A sweep would be even better.

Alyssa Zabala started the game for the Cards and pitched well to open. Louisville supported her by taking the lead in the second on a Jordan Williams triple and extended that lead in the third with hits from Easton Lotus and Camryn Lookadoo. Lotus, by the way, has moved to the second spot in the lineup. That allows Louisville to take more advantage of Chelsea Mack's speed in the leadoff with Lotus's consistency helping bring her home. Zabala gave up a home run in the top of the fourth, but the Cards still held a 3-1 advantage after being unable to score in the bottom half.

Zabala opened the fifth inning with a ground out, but then struggled to find the strike zone. She walked the next two batters on full counts, and a single loaded the bases. Anna Wise came in to replace her and things got weird. An infield single scored one run, and everyone advanced an extra base (including another run) on what was scored a fielding error by Bri Despines. A ground out scored a third run and Louisville's lead was gone. Another grounder was scored a fielding error by Lookadoo at first base and another unearned run scored. A fly out mercifully ended the inning, but Louisville's 3-1 lead had turned into a 5-3 deficit.

Never fear, though, fans: Louisville responded. Riley Janda opened the inning with a walk, and Mack laid down a bunt single before Lotus was hit by a pitch to load the bases. GT made a pitching change, and Bri Despines welcomed the new pitcher by coaxing a four-pitch walk. Lookadoo also walked and the game was tied. A strikeout and a flyout that was too shallow to sacrifice made it look as though Louisville would strand the bases loaded, but Williams came up with her second triple of the game to clear the bases. A grounder ended the inning, but Louisville led 8-5.

GT put two runners on in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Wise was able to keep any others from crossing the plate so 8-5 was the final score. Louisville and GT will continue the series today in chilly Louisville, with first pitch scheduled for 1PM. Today's game will stream on ACC Network Extra.

Floyd Signs with Racing

A second member of Karen Ferguson-Dayes's final senior class has signed an NWSL contract. After wearing purple for many matches in her University of Louisville career, goalkeeper Erynn Floyd will stick with the color and the city as she signed her first professional contract with Racing Louisville FC. The deal is for the remainder of the 2026 season (which just started) and carries a mutual option for 2027. I'm a bit surprised that Louisville didn't offer a longer deal, or that Floyd didn't sign such a deal elsewhere, but she'll be able to learn a ton behind Jordyn Bloomer, who stands out as one of the top keepers in the league.

It's a bit of a crowded keeper room in Louisville, with Floyd becoming the fifth on the roster. In addition to Bloomer, she joins Olivia Sekany (Washington 2020), Cristina Roque (FSU 2024), and Maddie Prohaska (Auburn 2025). With a lot of youth (even Bloomer is only 28), there is still a lot of opportunity to find a full-time spot on the roster. This is a great opportunity for Erynn and we wish her the best in the beginning of her career.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Jeff Walz talks Michigan -- Friday Cardinal Couple

WALZ TALKS ABOUT PLAYING MICHIGAN IN SWEET SIXTEEN

Remember this bunch?

Yes, Louisville WBB is in the Sweet Sixteen. They will go against Michigan in Ft.Worth, Texas. Jeff Walz talks about the matchup

Jeff Walz previews Cards WBB vs Michigan

The Wolverines got to the Sweet Sixteen in two romps...beating opening round opponent Holy cross by 35 and then knocking off North Carolina St. by 29. They won't have as easy a game in Louisville, though.

The Michigan squad went 27-6 overall and 15-3 in the Big 10. They finished tied with Iowa for 2nd place ...behind UCLA. Conference losses came against UCLA and Iowa (twice).

There is a lot of talk how the Michigan guards will give the Cards fits the entire game. Give them credit, they forced Holy Cross into 20 turnovers and NC State into 22 turnovers. The Cards commit only 13 a game...so we'll see how they do against Michigan.

Michigan is a 4.5 point favorite going into the game. We haven't discovered any Wolverines who are capable of scoring half a point. The game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and will be shown on ABC. We'll have a full recap here Sunday. If you are going, be sure to check out Goldee's BBQ.

Softball Cards rally late to down UK in Lexington 8-7 in nine innings -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

LOUISVILLE'S LATE INNING HEROICS BEAT UK SOFTBALL IN LEXINGTON.

The Cards were looking at a 6-3 deficit going into the top of the seventh inning, found a way to tie it and then push ahead for the win two innings later.

Tied at 2-2 after two innings after  UK and UofL traded two run homers...the Cards getting theirs from Taylor Monroe...Louisville pushed ahead 3-2 in the top of the third but then let UK take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Cats would score in the third and sixth and Louisville went into the top of the seventh three outs away from another loss in Lexington to the Cats. This Louisville squad wasn't ready to head I-64 West yet, though, and Chelsea Mack and easton Lotus began the uinning with back-to-back singles. and Bri Despains cleared the bags with a three bagger. It was 6-5 and the Cards were making late noise in Wildcat Country. Camryn Lookadoo singled home Despains and the Cards had tied it a 6-6.

Extra innings ensued and Brooke Gray went to the circle for the visitors to John Cropp Stadium. She pitched her way out of a base loaded jam in the eight and the Cards put the winning two runs on the scoreboard in the ninth when, after Despines walked and Lookaoo double...a Pickens single plated both and the Cards had regained a 8-9 lead. U would get a two out fence clearer in the bottom of the ninth. but the Cards got the final out andd the "W" in Lexington.

he Cards host Georgia Tech next for three games and will play the first one at 5 p.m. Friday.

For Cards, Victory is Sweet -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Louisville Defeats Alabama 69-68

via UofL Athletics
It was vindication for Imari Berry Monday afternoon, as she stepped to the free throw line in a two-point game with 8 seconds remaining against Alabama. Similar situations have seen Berry step to the line for critical late-game foul shots twice in the last two months, both against Duke. In early February, Berry made one of two at the line with one second remaining for the Cards to lose by a single point. In the ACC Championship game, Berry again made one of two with 14 seconds left to give the Cards just a two point lead instead of three. Duke made a tying layup and went on to win in overtime. Those situations were top of mind for everyone in the Yum! Center, and if they weren't for people watching the game on ESPN, the announcing crew made sure to remind everyone of them. Whether Berry thought of them at all will forever be a mystery, but she calmly sank both free throws to give the Cards a two-possession lead. Alabama's banked prayer, as a result, made it a one-point game rather than tying, and Louisville survived a buzzer-beating attempt to win by just one point.

It was an up-and-down affair, with each team trading haymakers during the game. The teams alternated quarter victories, with Louisville losing the final stanza but holding on just enough to win the game outright. Alabama refused to yield, multiple times needing sparks that brought them back into contention when Louisville looked poised to break the game open. The first of those came in the opening quarter. After Louisville turned a 4-6 deficit into a 13-6 lead with two minutes remaining, the Crimson Tide showed the danger of relaxing for just a moment. The Tide ran the shot clock down and Ace Austin nailed a three to make it 13-9. On the ensuing possession, Louisville turned the ball over just beyond mid-court and Laura Ziegler found herself trapped in a 2-on-1 situation. Normally, choosing to defend the easy layup is preferable to stepping out to guard the three-point shooter. When that shooter has just made a clutch three, though, preferences may go out the window. Austin sank her second three in ten seconds and Louisville's lead evaporated. The teams traded baskets and Louisville led 15-14 at the break.

A frenetic second quarter saw the two teams shoot a combined 16/31 from the floor and 8/16 from three-point land. Unfortunately for Louisville, they were on the losing end of the percentage battle in both categories. Alabama rode a 5/9 performance from beyond the arc to a 21-19 second quarter win and a one-point halftime lead.

Coach Jeff Walz put some fear into the Cards at halftime, as they were in danger of being upset at home. Louisville responded well. Both teams shot just 2/6 from distance in the third quarter, but Louisville was much more effective inside. The Cards were 9/16 from the floor overall and won the third by six points. Both teams took their first free throws in the third quarter, though Louisville's served as an omen for the remainder of the game. Alabama went 2-2 from the stripe while the Cards missed a pair. Those missed free throws came off the hands of Elif Istanbulluoglu, who entered as 70% foul shooter. Louisville went on to finish 8/16 from the stripe, dropping their season average by an entire percentage point and moving them down 30 spots in that stat category.

Holly Rowe selfie from 2024-25
The Cards opened the fourth quarter with a 54-49 lead and extended it on an Imari Berry jumper just 15 seconds into the fourth. That pushed Louisville's lead to 56-49 and the crowd was feeling it. The Cards were poised to break the game open, but they failed to capitalize. Louisville had three possessions over the next minute and a half where Alabama remained scoreless, but they failed to extend their lead. That's when the Tide swept through. Alabama went on a 10-1 run, led by a pair of threes from Karly Weathers, to take a 59-57 lead. The crowd was stunned, but Walz let his team play through it. Another missed three late in the shot clock looked like it would give Bama another big momentum builder, but Mackenly Randolph pulled down the offensive rebound and kicked it back out. The ball worked around to Elif, who nailed a three and put Louisville back on top.

Louisville holding their ground despite the big burst from Alabama proved to be the difference. Free throws would have salted the game away, but I already noted that the Cards struggled in that regard. Their next three trips to the line saw them go 1/2 each time, but Alabama continued to miss shots after their big run. With 1:57 remaining, Randolph was sent to the line in a huge spot and knocked down a pair to extend Louisville's lead to 65-61. Louisville's defense stepped up, and a steal in the corner led to a timeout. With 27 seconds on the shot clock, Louisville went to work, using every second they could. Reyna Scott drove with five left, but she was blocked. The ball came back to her and she buried a jumper from just inside the free throw line as the shot clock ran out.

Michael Hickey | Getty
Louisville looked like they'd put the game away when a jumper was missed by Alabama with 52 seconds left, but the ball bounced around until it was rebounded by the offense. A foul on the attempt gave Essence Cody a pair of free throws, which she sank to keep the lead at just four. Louisville burned the clock down again, but this time Taj Roberts' shot late in the clock failed to reach the rim. The fans erupted when another shot went in as the shot clock horn sounded, but it was ruled a shot clock violation and confirmed on review. Alabama took their final timeout with 19 seconds left, trailing by four. Randolph came up with a huge block on a layup, but Weathers recollected the ball and tipped it in with ten seconds remaining. That set up Berry's redemption story, but the game wasn't quite over. Weathers, who else, made the 30-foot bank shot to keep the Tide alive. Louisville tried to catch Alabama off guard with a quick inbounds to Scott so she could sprint away from defenders, but the plan didn't work. Scott went to the line with 2.3 seconds left and a chance to put the Cards up a full possession. She missed the first.

The conventional wisdom says you should miss the second to run the clock. Missing a free throw intentionally is difficult. It's also risky. A shot that fails to hit the rim doesn't count, and a shot that hits the rim too hard could lead to a breakaway for the defense. Scott executed the intentional miss well, and the ball bounced down toward the block. Alabama took off down the court and the Cards defended, in my opinion, dangerously closely. You know a desperation heave is coming. A foul on that heave basically loses you the game. Nevertheless, Louisville harassed the ballcarrier just enough for the shot to miss wide of the rim. The play-by-play actually doesn't even indicate the shot, so it may have been waved off. Whatever the decision, the outcome was the same. Louisville survived and advanced.

The FRED Report

F - Free Throws: Eight of sixteen. It was bad. It was bad before the intentional miss, because 8/15 is still barely over 50%. No letter.

R - Rebounding: The Cards dominated the boards 41-24. Louisville had two players with double-digit boards as Randolph had 13 and Elif had 11 (double-double with 18 points). Ziegler added eight, while Weathers was the top rebounder for Alabama with just five. The Cards used that advantage to double up on the Tide in second chance points, which was critical. Capital 'R'.

E - Effort/Execution: Louisville shot just 45% from the floor and 27% from three. However, they didn't yield. Even when minor lapses saw Alabama erase big leads, the Cards stayed focused on the goal, and they did just enough to get the win. Louisville did lose the turnover battle 15-13 and the points off turnovers battle 15-10, though, so I can only give a lowercase 'e'.

D - Defense: The Cards had just seven steals and Alabama shot 45.6% from the floor and 46.2% from three. You might think that's an easy knock on the defense, but Louisville held the Tide to under 50% from two and just 24 points in the paint. They sent Alabama to the line only twice, making the 100% free-throw shooting virtually useless. They also held the Tide below their scoring average, so I'm going to grant a lowercase 'd'.

A final tally of _-R-e-d won't win many awards, but it did the all important thing of winning this game.

Louisville advances to the Sweet Sixteen for the 13th time under Coach Jeff Walz. Those 13 appearances under Walz represent every appearance in program history. The Cards will now travel to Fort Worth for the next round (or two) of the NCAA Tournament. Louisville will face the two-seed, Michigan, who dispatched NC State by a whopping 29 points on Sunday. The Cards have won the last five matchups against the Wolverines, but the two teams last met in 2022. The Sweet Sixteen game will be played at 12:30 on ABC.

Until next time, Go Cards!
