Louisville Softball completes sweep over North Carolina Central -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

BECKER WITH ONE-HIT SHUTOUT IN 8-0 WIN

The Louisville Softball squad completed the shut-out of visiting North Carolina Central with a 8-0 win over the Eagles Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. Maryssa Becker tossed a six-inning, one-hit shutout for the Cards...who go to 30-9 on the season. For Becker, it was her fifth shut-out of the year and her second in two days.

The Cards took a 1-0 lead in the first when super sophomore shortshop Sidney Melton worked a walk, stole second and scored on a Becker single.

Those two would factor in the next Cardinal assault, which came in the third inning. Melton singles and Becker walked and both completed the circuit when Megan Hensley crushed her 13th homer of the season...bouncing one off the scoreboard in center...to make it 4-0 UofL.

Becker and Melton provided more offense in the fifth when Melton got another base on balls and sprinted home on a Becker double.

Louisville's final three runs came an inning later. Ashley Nikolao benefited from a two-base Eagle error and scored on Jamie Soles' single. Both Soles and Jordan Vorbrink touched home an out later when Melton secured an infield single and NCC throwing error.

The Cards are in third place in the ACC...three games back of league-leading FSU and a game behind Notre Dame. The three schools are the only ACC squads with 30 or more wins this season and less than 10 losses. Sandy Pearsall's squad stays home for the week...bringing in fifth-place Syracuse for a weekend series next.

  1. Paulie, I'm seeing that Chatrice White is transferring out of Illinois and has us scheduled for a visit. She's 6'3", played on the same team with Moore and Walz in Russia. Do you think we can use her and does Louisville have a shot?

    1. Experienced height is always a good thing. White is a blue collar worker and can step out and hit the mid-range jumper and beyond. She averaged 18.4 ppg at Illinois and grabbed almost 10 rebounds a game. Who would say no to that?

Let's face it...Illinois is a squad that isn't going to be a major factor in the NCAA Tournament anytime soon. Louisville has an incredible future in that regard. And, after sitting a season and learning the Walz way, I think she'd be an incredible addition. Make it so, mad scientist. I want this gal in Cardinal Red and Black.

  2. Hensley didn't just bounce a homerun off the scoreboard, she bounced it off the *top* of the scoreboard. It was a boom of a shot.

Also, with those 3 RBIs, she needs just 2 more to tie the school freshman year RBI record which is currently held by Chelsea Beamis who does a fantastic job in Marketing for UofL Softball, and Field Hockey.

    1. Pretty sure that's Bemis...but a nice update on the homer and impending record about to be broken, Worldwide. Sounds like that one could have landed over by the Harley-Davidson dealership if the scoreboard hadn't got in the way...

    2. Huh, indeed, no "a" in her last name. Wonder how long I've been misspelling that. :/

Sorry Chels, I'll get it right when your record falls. ;)

  3. Chatrice White, I'd say there's a whole lot to like here.

    1. I liked White when she was on the USA squad and still do. She visited Notre Dame already and is scheduled for the Cards this week. She did the ND trip on her own. Will be interesting to see if her parents make the Louisville visit

  5. Player from Iowa State is sueing head coach Fennerly for calling her a thug multiple times. Moody, an Afr Amer pg drafted in last years WNBA draft (cut before season)
gives a laundry list of abusive demeaning treatment including racist treatment. This is all alleged and will be determined in court.
Any coach who abuses players with persistent foul language should expect some push back and a surprise investigations or even player lawsuits. Coaches for years could get their point across with cursing verbal tirades at players and not be called on it for chronic verbal abuse.

    1. It's an interesting allegation. When you look at some of the tirades we see coaches go through on the sidelines during games and consider that in practices it's usually much worse...an affirmative ruling on a allegation like this could open the flood gates for tons of similar events clogging our courts systems.

Lawyers are going to do what they do...and that'll never change...but the days of "one coaching style fits all roster participants" could take a severe punch in the kidneys if success is the end result in the Moody suit. So many issues involved here...even down to the basics of free speech and interpretation of a player/coach relationship.

With the payoff that happened in Illinois on the racial/verbal discrimination issues...perhaps an already overcrowded and burdened legal system could be getting a deluge of water flowing through the floodgates. Scary.
