Ever looked at spaghetti junction from an aerial view? Trying to follow what's going on at Louisville between the president Dr. Neeli Bendapudi, athletic director Vince Tyra, and football coach Scott Satterfield has felt like that.

We don't cover football here at Cardinal Couple but the happenings of Tyra and Dr. Bendapudi certainly impact UofL women's athletics. That being said, we've kept our eyes on these recent events including a Board of Trustees meeting last night that was behind closed doors (and some media challenged the BOT's authority on that) and a meeting with UofL Athletics this morning at 9:00. All we heard from the Board of Trustees meeting is that the BOT is taking no action.

Something big is happening. Usually something like this involves personnel issues at a high level that could range form bringing someone new on board to a higher-up departing. If you've been on social media lately, you've probably seen 100 theories and assumptions with many involving certain personnel packing their bags. Because none of these have proven true at this moment in time we won't share those here. We're here to give you the truth.

It is important to remember that our primary objective here at Cardinal Couple is to bring you the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports. That'll never change.

We will bring you more on this as it happens and how it may affect UofL women's sports.

Volleyball

Louisville's old basketball arena- Freedom Hall

So let's talk volleyball instead. 1-seed Louisville Volleyball is still dancing. They'll host one of the NCAA Regionals this weekend and here's what you need to know:

Location: Freedom Hall, Louisville Fair and Exposition Center

Date/Time: Thursday Dec. 9 and Saturday Dec. 11

Teams: 1-seed Louisville, 16-seed Florida, 8-seed Georgia Tech, 9-seed Ohio State

TV: ESPNU or ESPN+ depending on match

Louisville will face Florida on Thursday in one of the first matches of the NCAA Regional semifinals at 1:00 p.m. As the 1-seed, Louisville did not get any favors from the NCAA since the last match of this round starts at 7:30 p.m. Unlike the opening two rounds, this one will be aired on tv. You can catch the entirety of this match on ESPNU as well as streaming on the ESPN app.

Georgia Tech and Ohio State, which will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the former match, was not given justice as this is one of two matches on the day aired at ESPN+. 

We will break the Louisville vs Florida match down later this week, but we'll go on and start discussing this match some. Louisville is 0-8 all-time against Florida (1985, 1988, 1991, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2018, 2019). Florida went a combined 53-12 with a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2018 and 2019.

The Gators are 22-8 this season and finished third in the SEC with a 14-4 conference mark.

In the mix of all the craziness yesterday we saw a familiar face with some exciting news. Kelsi Worrell Dahlia is now a world record holder! The Cardinal alum recently set the world record for the 100m butterfly with a time of 54.59. Her record time happened at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Zwemstadion in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The Olympic gold medalist did great things at UofL and continues to do great things!

Molly Lockhart commits to WBB...WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Happy Wednesday Cards fans! With each passing day we edge closer to the start of the fall sports season. If you're like me, you have a calendar of the next few month's laid out for every game. If not, you can always listen to THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR on Saturdays and get the scheduling for the week. 

Women's soccer had their media shoot yesterday. If you're familiar with Snapchat, you can see some behind the scenes of the shoot at the UofL Sports Snapchat story for much of the remainder of the day. These incredibly designed posters should be coming out soon and we are exactly one week away from the start of the UofL women's soccer season! 

I wonder if we can find room for a poster at the WCHQ studios? We hate to take down Asia Durr's but maybe we'll find an unused wall and not have to. 

Volleyball released some pictures and videos of the inside of Cardinal Arena. It is really starting to come together. I understand Worldwide Jeff has already spotted his seat in the new configuration and is camped out in it -- waiting for first volley. It won't be long before fans pack the refurbished facility to cheer on a new era in Louisville Volleyball. 

As previously mentioned in several articles here, I want to extend congratulations to the UofL swimmers that helped USA win the world championship. UofL finished third out of the many colleges and universities that participated and Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford added to their already impressive collection of award and trophies.

Some buzz surrounded the UofL women's basketball program last night with Louisville Butler's star Molly Lockhart committed to the 2018 class. She's 6'3" and has really been tearing up the summer club ball circuits. Supposedly she was asked how she felt, on a scale of 1-10 about the announcement, and she replied "10,000". Summer Draws to a Close -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

The FINA World Championships wrapped yesterday, which means the end of Cardinal sports for a little more than a week. However, the month that seemed like it might never end has done just that. Tomorrow is August 1st, which means heading to the all-sports calendar on the Louisville Athletics website will show you actual university competitive events. It will be a magical time, as it always is when the fall sports swing into gear. After a brief (and final) swimming update, we'll take a look at what is to come for your favorite fall sports.

Worrell Wins Gold

Kelsi Worrell, Cardinal Forever, one whom we should not quickly allow to leave the annals of our memories, added yet another medal to her collection yesterday in the final day of the FINA World Championships event. Swimming her preferred stroke, one at which she is quite masterful, Worrell helped the USA Women's 4x100 Medley relay team win gold and set a world record. Worrell spun a 56.30 butterfly leg to help the team become the first women's team to ever go sub 3:52 with a final time of 3:51.55. The silver medal finished in 3:53.38, the Russian team setting a European record. Essentially what I'm saying is that they swam really fast. Congratulations to Kelsi, Mallory (who helped set up this team with a preliminary win), and all of the other Americans and Cardinals representing their schools and countries at this event. We look forward to more great swims this season and perhaps a first full title.

Women's Soccer Clarity

After some digging on B1G athletics sites, I have come up with my own answers regarding Louisville's first two competitions this year. Despite none of the three school's schedules indicating such, Louisville will begin the season with exhibition games against Ohio State and DePaul. The first game will be against Ohio State on the road on August 9th, which will be a good indication of how this season may shape up early. Coach K will lead her Cardinals back to the Ville for a home exhibition against DePaul on August 12th at 5PM. In addition to being the first game for this sport, it will also be your first chance to catch Louisville athletics at home this fall. The Kickin' Cards will get their real season underway the next Friday, 8/18, against Ball State University. The game comes during a double header with a men's game so be sure to block out your evening for a full night at Lynn Stadium. I've still got high hopes for this team and I am looking forward to seeing them get started.

Field Hockey Openers

Justine Sowry will get her team in shape and begin the quest for their first national championship when Miami of Ohio comes to town on August 18th. The game gets started at 1:30, so it may be a tough one to make for the working crowd. However, there will be plenty of other opportunities to see one of the women's teams that is experiencing a lot of success early in Louisville's ACC tenure. Louisville beat Miami (OH) last season 2-0 and will look for the same success to get their year started off on the right foot. The annual alumnae game is on August 19th and will be a good chance to see this year's iteration of the team as well as some of your favorite players from the past. It may not be the most competitive event around but it is sure to be a lot of fun. I hope to make it to some of my first field hockey games this season, so maybe I'll see you there!

Volleyball in on the Action

It seems as though the weekend of the 18th will be a busy one on campus. In addition to all of the students returning from their summer breaks of various lengths (Speed School's is only about a month), nearly ever fall sport will be in action in some capacity. Volleyball will get in on the fun with their annual red vs black scrimmage on August 19th at 6PM. This will be their first event with Cardinal Arena exclusively hosting their games so be sure to stop by to get a look at the team and the facilities. Jeff will be more than happy to bring you more information about this event and just about every other game throughout the season regarding volleyball so stay tuned.

Basketball Trials

While true competition for the 2017-18 Louisville women's basketball team is not yet on the horizon, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the U-23 trials officially begin today. I am not sure how tight lipped these sessions will be, but I believe that if there is information to be had about the event, there is a good chance Paulie can find it for you. If nothing else, the event ends this week so we can see relatively quickly which Cardinals will be heading to Japan.

Football Open Practice

Camp officially began for the Cardinals last week, but Coach Petrino held off on practice for a few days. I'm sure his days have been full of meetings, video sessions, one on one instructions, and the like, but today marks the true beginning. We're about a month from kickoff in Indianapolis against and old friend in Jeff Brohm, and practice gets underway today. Louisville football will host an open practice today beginning at 4PM. This is a great chance to see the work that many players put in over the summer to perfect their craft as well as seeing the new faces. With so many members on the team, it's never too early to begin memorizing numbers. There are high expectations after last year's season ended with a thud, and I believe this team has the capacity to meet them. We'll all find out together.

Another Big Splash - Sunday Cardinal Couple

FINA World Championships Winding Down

The FINA World Championships in aquatics are about to wrap up in Budapest, but it wasn't before Mallory Comerford made another big splash.

With a 3:55.95 overall, Comerford anchored the 4x100 medley relay with a 52.90 to bring the US team home with about a second lead over the rest of the field in the prelims.  The team with likely field a different 4 for the finals.

In the late session yesterday, Comerford also was part of setting another World Record, this one is more likely to stand for a little while, at least.  In the finals of the 4x100 Mixed Freestyle Relay, the Americans scorched the World Record by almost 3 1/2 seconds, keeping in mind that the mixed relay events are still relatively new to the International swimming scene.  Comerford swam 3rd, and only had to hold on to the lead established by the two guys that lead off the event.  With a 52.71, she did that job quite well, and Simone Manuel brought the anchor leg home for a total of 3:19.60.

As this was the finals of this event, this World Record will hold at least until the next sanctioned event.  That will be a nice change from the previous world record which Comerford and Kelsi Worrell were a part of setting a couple of days ago in the 4x100 Mixed Medley Relay event.  In that event, they set the record in the semi-finals, and were prompted bettered by the other 4 members of the team in the finals of the event that night.

We had JC Sullivan in the studio with Case, Worldwide, and Paulie - brain-addled from a week's vacation.  We also heard from Louisville Women's Basketball great, and Louisville native, Tia Gibbs in our summer "Catching Up" series.  We also ran down some of the swimming events from Budapest, ranted briefly about the difficulty of finding any information on FINA's website, and briefly discussed, without any firsthand knowledge, just how terribly awful The Emoji Movie is.

Still Swimming -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

World Championships Continue

I'm going to keep this Saturday morning article short and sweet. Something you can breeze through while you sip your coffee and wait for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour to come on. I'm also going to milk the cow which is the FINA World Championships in Budapest as long as I can while there isn't much else happening in the sports world. The event is nearing it's end however, so Louisville's amazing swimmers will soon be returning home bearing hardware.

As the second to last day of the event winds down, we may have seen the last of Mallory Comerford at this event. She swam in the 100m freestyle final last night, unfortunately failing to podium. Mallory finished fourth behind three Olympic medalists. She has had a successful event, nonetheless and it may not be over. She is not swimming in the women's 50m freestyle final, but she is still an eligible selection for the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay preliminaries.

Also continuing to impress is former Cardinal Kelsi Worrell. Worrell is swimming her hardest trying to catch the Swedish superstar, Sarah Sjostrom. Sjostrom is one of those who beat Comerford last night in the freestyle, and is also the swimmer that posted the world record split during the relay in which both Cardinals won gold. Worrell swam her fastest ever 50m fly yesterday in the semifinal and was still 0.27 seconds behind Sjostrom. Kelsi will have her work cut out for her in the final, but perhaps she'll be able to knock off the giant. Kelsi is also eligible for selection in the mixed freestyle relay.

Good luck to both of these ladies and the rest of the swimmers and staff representing UofL across the world. We look forward to seeing them return to their home pool and smashing the competition stateside just as they do globally.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Paulie is back from vacation and will man the helm during the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour today at 11AM. Cardinal Couple - Just Keep Swimming...Saturday Surprise...--FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Just Keep Swimming

Alright, you know the drill by now.  FINA World Championships, Budapest, Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford of most note.

The latest event with results relevant to UofL is the 4x200 Freestyle Relay.  Mallory Comerford, with a 2nd leg split of 1:56.92, helped the team to another gold medal.  Joining Mallory on the podium for this event were Leah Smith, Melanie Margalis, and Katie Ledecky.

In other events, Kelsi Worrell will be headed to the semi-final of the 50 Fly, her specialty event, recording a personal best of 25.65 in the prelims.  That puts here only .15 off of the American Record held by Dana Vollmer.  Sarah Sjostrom posted a 25.25 in her heat to advance, and will be the odds-on favorite to win the event overall.

Just Keep Rowing

Paulie and I have both had the opportunity several times to speak with Rowing Head Coach Derek
Copeland, and have enjoyed every minute of those conversations.

One of the least visible programs at UofL, despite the huge number of athletes involved, the Rowing team has a new Associate Head Coach in Sheila Rinozzi.

Rinozzi has been an assistant coach with the program for 3 years and has been a part of the program's meteoric rise is prominence on the national scene.  While the change in title reflects the trust and respect for Rinozzi, and, we presume, a salary adjustment to boot, the role she will play with the program likely will not change drastically.  As Copeland put it, "Assigning Sheila the title of associate head coach was an easy decision as she has already been contributing to the program at this level since the day she arrived".

We look forward to the annual Red and Black Regatta for the Rowing program, usually held in the October timeframe, on the Louisville waterfront near the UofL boathouse.  This is always a fantastic event, and we would encourage all UofL sports fans to take the opportunity to head down and cheer on a program that just doesn't get as much visibility typically.  The boathouse is spectacular, a real sight to behold.

Oh yeah, and they also always have a nice spread of food for everyone to eat lunch.


SATURDAY SURPRISE

Cardinal Couple With Spirit

Jared checks in after catching some TV last night.  He reminds us of a portion of UofL Athletics that doesn't get put front and center all that often, despite their amazing success.  Then we catch up with the happenings in Budapest

So Sharp

The premiere of "So Sharp" happened on Lifetime last night. People from everywhere tuned in to see what the hype was about. What they saw was Todd Sharp and the Louisville Ladybirds.

Before going in depth to our spirit squads at Louisville I do want to clarify one thing. "So Sharp" is a reality tv show and does NOT accurately depict any of the folks on the show. The show is entirely scripted and everything that happens is staged. Well, except for their talent.

The talent of our cheerleaders and Ladybirds is incredible. Young women from all around the country come to the University of Louisville in hopes of joining the best of the best.

The cheerleaders are divided into three groups: small coed, large coed, and all girl. Small coed has won 10 national championships with the most recent being 2017. Large coed has 17 championships, with their most recent being in 2016. All girl has claimed the crown 13 times, most recently in 2017. The Ladybirds have had most of their success recently, winning their 14th championship in 2017.

While many people are kicking back and relaxing throughout the summer the members of the spirit squad are having to stay in shape for the upcoming season and tryouts. Tryouts happen over the summer so the teams can start preparing even before the school year starts.

Once school starts they find time to practice in the evenings 30 minutes across town at GymTyme. The late night practices are to prevent conflicts with school, which despite what you may have heard on the tv show, school does come first. The weeks leading up to nationals in Daytona involve intense practices as the members finish up perfecting their routines.

I'm sure some people are asking why I'm talking about an unofficial sport at UofL. Well, they work just as hard as any of the athletes do. The cheerleaders and Ladybirds are students and find a way to balance school and cheer/dance. And on top of that they receive ZERO scholarship money. Each and every one of the members has to pay their own tuition unless they have academic scholarships and then have to fund their own outfits and equipment. And of course, each of the squads has enough championships on their own to beat out all of the 21 official UofL sports combined.

So next time you're watching a halftime routine or see some highlights of the Louisville cheerleaders and Ladybirds take a minute to reflect their dedication and hard work. And also be sure to thank Todd Sharp for his terrific leadership and choreography.

Swimming World Record...With a Caveat

In Budapest, the dynamic duo of Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford also had some success yesterday.  Kelsi and Mallory swam the last two legs (Fly and Free) of the US Mixed Medley 4x100 relay team in the semi-final round.  After the Ryan Murphy kicked off the event with an improved time over his Olympic appearance in the backstroke, Kevin Cordes continued to the US excellence in the breast stroke.  Then Kelsi hit the water for her specialty, the Fly, with a 56.17 split.  Then it was Mallory's time to shine in the Free.  She charged past the World Record pace line, and finished off the event with a 52.82 split, for a total time of 3:40.28, bettering the World Record by about a second and a half, and beating the rest of the field by about 4 seconds.

Alas, the record wouldn't be held for long.  In the evening, the other half of the mixed medley team took to the water and shaved about 2 seconds off the overall time to improve the WR that much more.

The Mixed Medley event is a relatively new event on the International Swimming scene, with it only being added to the World Championships for the last competition in 2015.  It will be in the upcoming 2020 Olympics, so there is an air of excitement around the race.  Because it's such a new event, however, frequent World Records are to be expected.

Regardless of the newness of the race, Kelsi and Mallory can, and should, revel in having held, however briefly, a World Record.

Tuesday Cardinal Couple

Jared brings us a look at the Pros and Cons of Volleyball playing at Cardinal Arena.  Meanwhile Worldwide chimes in with some more coverage of Swimming in Budapest.

Pros and Cons for Cardinal Arena

When Coach Dani Busboom Kelly took over as head coach for the volleyball team here at Louisville there were a few changes made. The one most well-known is the transition back to Cardinal Arena for home games. Moving away from the KFC Yum! Center has its pros and cons.

Pro: In the players' prospective Cardinal Arena is on campus. The close proximity to their dorms and classes makes it easier to get to and less travel time. This could also allow for fewer missed classes

Pro: With the smaller size of Cardinal Arena noises are amplified. The sound 1,000 fans could make downtown is much greater in a smaller arena. The cheers from the fans and songs from the band are a great way to help energize the team.

Con: Parking is not as easy. The KFC Yum! Center had a parking lot below the facility and another one right next door. Plus you could always find street parking downtown. UofL's campus is limited in parking. Weekday games might be frustrating as fans circle campus and the nearby streets hoping to find somewhere to park. The Floyd Garage can hold so many cars, but many are reserved for student residents. What's left is on the higher floors and is still a short walk to the arena instead of an elevator ride up.

Con: Cardinal Arena may be undergoing a full renovation to increase the current 840ish seats, but the concern for lack of seating will still be a problem. Last year's team saw plenty of games that broke 1,000 fans. Once you take away the seating for friends and family tickets and season ticket holders you're left with some seats for single game tickets and student tickets.

Pro: This will be a volleyball ONLY facility. The team will not have to share the facility with the men and women's basketball team, nor will they have to deal with the KFC Yum! Center scheduling. By the way, UofL getting the boot on priority for months like October would've been a major blow for volleyball scheduling anyways. It was just good timing moving back to Cardinal Arena.

Pro: Concession stand prices will be a tad cheaper. I don't mean that we will see a drastic change in prices, but those $6 fountain drinks and $8 personal pizzas might drop a dollar or two. It might not sound like much, but if you buy a drink every game then you could find yourself saving quite a bit of money.

The team and its fans have handled Cardinal Arena well over the years. They've also managed to host the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament just a couple years ago. Overall the switch back to Cardinal Arena will be beneficial for all, even if we were spoiled by our fancy downtown arena for a few years.

Just Keep Swimming

Cardinals continue to find the podium in Budapest.

Kelsi Worrell put up another personal best in the 100 meter Butterfly to take third place in the finals at the World Championship Event that we continue to cover.  The 56.37 time shaves another fraction of a second off of her best as she continues to improve and advance in the international standings.  This is Kelsi's first individual medal in a major international event.  She was beaten by world record holder Sarah Sjostrum who swam the event in 55.53.  Australia's Emma McKeon took 2nd at 56.18, which is also a new Australian Record.

Also in Budapest, Grigory Tarasevich finished 3rd in his semifinals heat to advance with a 5th place seed to the finals 100 backstroke.  The finals for this event will be tonight.

In prelims this morning it's all guys for the Cardinals.  Carlos Claverie will be swimming in the 50M breaststroke, Etay Gurevich will be in the 200M Fly, and Marcelo Acosta goes for a longer swim in the 800M Free.

Results to Report

We don't often get any actual results to report during the Summer Slump, and they're not UofL results, but they are results nonetheless, so we're going to report them, because that's what we do here at Cardinal Couple.

As an aside, I do think it's nice that the weather here in Louisville has decided, this morning, to show solidarity with the current and former UofL athletes competing this week.  The soft rain is actually rather pleasant, and dare we hope that it may cool things off a little bit around here?  That wouldn't be unwelcome.

Swimming in Budapest

The University of Louisville has quite a contingent in Budapest for the FINA World Championships.  We've mentioned Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford, swimming for Team USA, along with Coach Arthur Albiero being on the coaching staff.  But there are a total of 8 Cardinals swimmers and 4 coaches involved with various national teams at the Hungary event.  The UofL Swimming and Diving team is one of the most international teams on campus...rivaled, perhaps, by Field Hockey, and Women's Soccer not too terribly far behind.  So first a quick rundown of the people beyond the above mentioned, and their national affiliations.

First the swimmers:

Grigory Tarasevich - Russia

Marcelo Acosta - El Salvador

Carlos Claverie - Venezuela

Etay Gurevich - Isreal

Nastja Govejsek - Slovenia

Andrej Barna - Serbia

And then the coaches:

Vlad Polyakov - Russia

Kameron Chastain - El Salvador

Stephanie Juncker - Venezuela

Swimming events started at 9:30am local time in Budapest this morning, which equates to 3:30am here in EDT-land.

The biggest result thus far is Kelsi Worrell's preliminary time of 56.44 in the 100 Fly.  That shave .04 off of her previous best, and also puts her in 5th place for the fastest swimmers of all time in the event.  It also is the 5th fastest individual swim for an American in the event with the other 4 being by Dana Vollmer.  Kelsi still needs to shave off about a second to reach the world record (55.58) held by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden.  Nastja Govesjek also competed in the event, finishing in 25th.

A number of Cards finished in the mid-20s; Marcelo Acosta with a 24th place finish in the 400 Free, and 28th for Carlos Claverie in the 100 Breast.

The 4x100 Free Relay also featured Kelsi and Mallory, and finished with the top seed going into the finals tonight, with splits of 53.27, and 52.47, respectively.  Andrej Barna anchored the Serbia 4x100 Free Relay, and they finished just out of the advancement positions in 9th.

Field Hockey in Johannesburg

Nicole Woods, one of our Attack Yorkies for the Field Hockey team, is with Team USA in Johannesburg, South Africa, competing in the  championship game of the Hockey World League Semi-Finals (yes, it took me a few minutes to decipher that as well).  They are playing against Germany at the time of this writing, with Germany currently holding a 1-0 lead.

Arena Deal Drama

Well now, the KFC Yum! Center arena deal negotiations certainly got a lot more dramatic in the past day, didn't they?

In case you missed all of the...let's say "entertainment", even though it wasn't all that pleasant to watch...yesterday, three different organizations met yesterday to put their stamp of approval on UofL's new lease for playing at the KFC Yum! Center downtown.  The deed was done, but not without some conflict.

The University of Louisville Athletic Association met first, in the morning, and while there were some pointed questions, most notably about Tom Jurich's opinion on the deal (answer: a seemingly unenthusiastic acceptance), the measure passed easily.  In the afternoon, concurrently, the University of Louisville Board of Trustee's and the Louisville Arena Authority Board met.  Both approved the deal, the Arena Authority in a rather perfunctory manner, while the UofL Board of Trustees meeting was contentious.

I don't think there's a great need to go into the details of how the meeting went down as Insider Louisville, Business First,  the CJ, and others have detailed and fair recaps of the events as they happened from reporters that were in attendance and taking copious notes.  The results from the Board of Trustees vote?  Of the 13 members, 4 abstained, 2 didn't vote, and 7 voted yes.

So, UofL will pay the Arena Authority 2.4 million more dollars than they were previously; and will give up their rights to their October dates at the Arena, although they will still work with the Arena to schedule the Men's Basketball Red and Black scrimmage in October.  UofL did gain the ability to add a surcharge to ticket prices, to help offset the hit of the extra payment, so ultimately, it's going to be the fans that pay for this.

Swimming in Budapest

The Cardinals contingent has arrived in Budapest for the World Championships.  While the overall
aquatics championships have been going on for about a week, the swimming events don't start until Sunday morning (about 3:30am Eastern time, if I remember my timezone conversion for Budapest correctly).  Swimming and Diving Head Coach Arthur Albiero is on the coaching staff for Team USA in Budapest.  Two UofL swimmers are in the competition, graduate Kelsi Worrell, and rising Junior Mallory Comerford.

Look for results as these two compete throughout next week.

Faye Brust Joins Lacrosse Coaching Staff

UofL Lacrosse offensive standout Faye Brust has returned to Louisville to join the UofL coaching staff under head coach Kellie Young.

Brust was an offensive powerhouse during her four years at UofL with her name appearing in another of different places in the record book.  Until this past year, she held the record for most free position goals, she is 2nd in goals, and 3rd in points, in the season record books.  She had 143 career goals, in a career cut short by an ACL tear midway through her senior campaign.

With that resume, just from her time playing at UofL, it's unsurprising that she will be joining the Cardinals staff as Offensive Coordinator.  Prior to return to Louisville, Brust was Offensive Coordinator at Furman University, and has experience in club coaching as well.

Brust is, as are many standout Lacrosse players, from Maryland, with her hometown being Bel Air.  (We hope she got a chance to say "hi" to the Fresh Prince during his stint there...wait, what?  Wrong Bel Air?  Well, there goes that joke.)

Wrapping US Swimming Championships...The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

MAKING WAVES

The US Championships swimming event in Indianapolis has wrapped up, and two Cardinals will be representing the US at the World Championships in Budapest thanks to their performances.

Former Card Kelsi Worrell will be participating in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, as well as her signature events, the 50 Butterfly, and the 100 Fly.  Rising Junior Mallory Comerford will be swimming in her signature event, the 100 Free, as well as the 4x200 Free Relay.

Overall in the event, UofL had a number of former and current swimmers participating.  While we here at Cardinal Couple make frequent mention of Comerford and Worrell, because they fall in our focus of UofL women's athletics, and they're just dominating the sport for UofL currently, we should give a tip of the hat to the other athletes participating.

The other athletes participating were Rachel Bradford Feldman (200 Breast, 400 IM, 200 IM), Avery Braunecker (50 Free), Casey Franz (100 Back, 50 Back, 100 Free, 50 Free), Gracie Long (200 IM, 50 Free), Hannah Magnusson (50 Fly, 100 Fly), Grace Oglesby (50 Fly, 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 200 IM), Sofie Underdahl (50 Back, 100 Back, 200 Back), Lainey Visscher (50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Free, 100 Free), Andrea Cottrell (50 Breast, 100 Breast, 200 Breast).

On the men's side, Keegan Foulke (200 Breast, 400 IM), Zach "Batman" Harting (200 Fly, 200 Free,
50 Fly, 100 Fly), Jarrett Jones (200 Fly, 400 IM), Todd Owen (200 Breast), Sam Steele (200 Free), Jonathan Zoucha (200 Breast, 200 IM), Nick Albiera - son of Head Coach Arthur Albiero, who decided to just try every event (200 Fly, 100 Free, 200 Back, 50 Fly, 100 Fly, 50 Back, 100 Back, 200 IM), and Trevor Carroll (50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free).

The World Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from July 14th through 30th, starting just two weeks from now.

We, of course, will be sure to let you know how Kelsi and Mallory do in their events when they happen.

THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR yesterday. Joining Paulie, Worldwide and Julie the Bird Lady in studio was sportscaster Daryl Foust and we had an interview with Sara Hammond.
We had what we think was an excellent show on

Daryl epitomizes the word "busy". She call UofL sporting events on the ACC Network Extra, does video at Louisville Bats games, writes for The Crunch Zone, co-hosts Kentucky Women Talk Sports and even finds time to umpire softball. She had a rapt and fascinated studio hanging on every word yesterday as she filled us in on what she does.

Sara is adjusting to life in Jackson, TN quite well as the assistant women's basketball coach at Union
University. She filled us in on how that job came about, her duties and days, her thoughts on her team and the 2017-18 UofL WBB squad and even a great place to eat in Jackson! She's all about the" hard work" as well and gave us great insight into where she's at in her life these days.

Fly Free Louisville Swimmers, Hoops and Radio -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Splish Splash

Nothing seems to be holding down UofL swimmers Kelsi Worrell, and Mallory Comerford, letting them fly free at the US National Championships in Indianapolis.

The event, featuring 7 UofL current and former swimmers is being held at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.  The event also serves as a trial event for the World Championships which will be held in Budapest, Hungary.

Comerford won the 100m Freestyle event Tuesday evening with an American Record 52.81 seconds, the first time an American has finished in under 53 seconds.  She beat out Olympian Simone Manuel by about a quarter of a second.  Worrell touched 4th at 53.99.

Comerford also got a 4th place finish 200m Freestyle event Wednesday night.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, in addition to the 4th place finish for Worrell in the 100m Free, she absolutely blitzed the field in the 50m Butterfly, which is her signature event, beating the rest of the field by a half a second, touching in 25.69, which is only about a fifth of a second off of the American Record held by swimming great Dana Torres.

Last night, Worrell did it again, with the 100m Fly with a time of 57.38.  In this one, Comerford, not particularly known for her Butterfly stroke, finished 3rd with 57.97.

The overall event continues through tomorrow.

Same Song, 7th Verse

Brendan McKay, the phenom 2-way player, picked up the last, and arguably most prestigious, of the
seven major player of the year awards in Baseball.  Let me clarify that, he won all of the previously announced six as well.

The Golden Spikes award was announced last night on ESPN's SportsCenter.

To many, this seemed almost like a foregone conclusion, but it wraps up the major awards in a sweep for McKay.

McKay was drafted 4th in the MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays and signed with a record setting 7 million dollar deal.

NCAA Swimming Should Switch to Meters

Kelsi a champ no matter how they measure her! 

University of Louisville Swimming has now had six straight years of NCAA National Champions (11 total), several American records in a variety of events, and numerous Olympics appearances representing a number of different countries.  Those achievements can be quite difficult to compare, though, for one very basic reason.  NCAA events are measured in yards, EVERYTHING else is measured in meters.

This means that breakout performers in NCAA events, such as we've seen recently in Kelsi Worrell and Malory Comerford, have another hurdle to climb when they move on to international and pro events.  The races are almost 10 percent longer!  To be specific, 1 meter is 1.09361 yards (according to Google calculator).  So when you hear about Comerford tying Katie Ledecky in the 200 free at the NCAA Championships, and when you look at the time, 1 minutes 40.3 seconds, you can't compare those with any swimming times and achievements outside of the NCAA.  For reference, the NCAA women's record in the 200 Free (in yards) is held by Missy Franklin at 1:39.10, while the world record 200 Free (in meters) is held by Federica Pellegrini at 1:52.98.

The US does very well internationally in swimming, but I have to believe that swimming in yards for the major feeder avenue for swimmers into the US international swimming ranks, and then expecting them to jump up to meters when the time comes to make the transition, puts the US system at a disadvantage.  This disadvantage was highlighted recently in a short blurb by Swim Swam News questioning what Malory Comerford needs to do to "find her meters gear."

I don't hide my distaste for the NCAA as an organization.  Their hypocrisy in "protecting the amateurism of athletes" (or somesuch) by preventing companies, universities, even charities(!) from making money on the likeness of student-athletes, while they themselves rake in millions knows no bounds.  Yes, the NCAA is a non-profit, but don't look behind the curtain, and remember that they also prevent other non-profits and charities from making money on the likeness of student-athletes.  Well known basketball announcer and analyst Jay Bilas essentially teaches a master class on this via his twitter account on a regular basis.

Get with the program, NCAA...

Back to the point, though, by holding NCAA events in yards, I believe the NCAA is doing a huge disservice to the greater US swimming community and program.  Of course, this whole debate is a microcosm of the US's stubborn insistence of sticking with so-called Imperial measurements over Metric in everyday life.  Yes, I come to this debate from a background in math, science, engineering, and technology (the so-called STEM fields) where metric is essentially universally used because it's easier, works better, is more consistent, and is just all-around better.

The time has come to switch to meters.  NCAA, let's get it done.

Baseball Washed Out On Senior Day

I've got a bad feeling about this.  Baseball has lost their last three games of the regular season, a road trip up to IU in Bloomington, and two games at Patterson against FSU.  Last night, in what was to be the final game, with no opportunity to potentially schedule a make-up game, or play the game today because the season officially ended last night, weather caused a cancellation on Senior Night.

OK, yes, they still collected the number 1 seed in the ACC Tournament being hosted at Slugger Field starting Thursday, but I'm none to keen on the team entering the tournament coming off of three straight losses, and the disappointment of not getting to properly honor the seniors in front of the UofL crowd.  The team did hold a ceremony in their complex at Patterson Stadium, but I worry that there's just something missing when the fans don't get to chime in and show their appreciation.  It feels a little like they got shortchanged.  Of course, with the ACC Tournament being hosted locally, there are still opportunities for UofL fans to show their appreciation for Michael Bollmer, Chandler Dale, Shane Hummel, Colin Lyman, Jake Sparger, Ryan Summers, and Logan Taylor on the field, but I would be very surprised if they get to hold any sort of special recognition for them.  It is also expected that Louisville, unless they lay a major egg in the conference tourney, and maybe even still, would be a Regional, and almost certainly Super Regional host (assuming they advance to the Supers).

I'm not one to believe in omens, or anything superstitious, really, but I do believe in sports momentum and the habits of winning, and I worry that, right now, UofL Baseball doesn't have that momentum, and need to get back into the habits of winning.

I'll be cheering for them, of course, but I can't help going into this with a pit in my stomach worried about how they'll be playing Thursday vs Notre Dame.

Softball Sweeps and More - Monday Cardinal Couple

Softball at Virginia Tech

The Softball squad got it started early Saturday in the series finale vs Virginia Tech, putting 7 on the scoreboard in the 1st inning and would hold on for the 10-8 win.

The Cards got it going early with Jordan "The Governor" McNary getting on base with a 1-out walk.  Big sticks Maryssa "Beck" Becker and Nicole "Poof" Pufahl loaded the bases up with base hits for each.  Megan Hensley, who somehow doesn't really have a Cardinal Couple nickname yet, got McNary and Poof home with a double, setting up Jamie "The New Pride of New Egypt, New Jersey" Soles own RBI double.  Alison "Mike, Mike, Mike" Szydlowski, brought Soles home with a single.  Morgan "Mo" Meyer reached to put two on for Caitlin "She's just a freshman and she needs a nickname too" Ferguson to bring home.

The Hokies clawed back 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st, both teams went scoreless in the 2nd, and the Cards would finish their scoring in the 3rd.  Soles and Mike both got singles to get on base.  Mo Meyer, who started out her career with the Cards as a slapper, but hits for power these days, got a solid shot up the middle to bring Soles home.  McNary, who started out her career as a speedster slapper and remains so to this day, got an infield hit that brought Mike home.  McNary, demonstrating that speed, stole 2nd, and an error on the throw gave the also quite quick Meyer time to cross the plate for a 3 on the scoreboard in the 3rd.

A scoreless 4th, then VT put up 4 in the bottom of the 5th, and a single one in the bottom of the 6th to reach the final score after a scoreless 7th of 10-8.

Becker gets the win for pitching 5 innings, with Megan Hensley coming in for the save in relief.

Pearsall and the squad will be back at Ulmer tomorrow evening, the 18th, with a 5pm first pitch at Ulmer.  This one will be on The ACC Network Extra if you can't get off work soon enough to make it down there.  You may find it a bit easier to make it down there the next day, Wednesday, at 6pm when in-state WKU comes in to play.

Swimming

Cardinal Forever Kelsi Worrell continues to show the world that she's a force to be reckoned with in
the butterfly stroke, winning the Mesa, AZ even in the Arena Pro Swim Series Saturday night.

Winning the 200-meter stroke, Kelsi is extending the events for which she is known as she heretofore has achieved her success in the 100-meter and shorter races as a pure sprinter.  The winning time of 2:09.04 was 3.59 seconds better than her prelim, so she clearly is putting some effort in some of the longer races.

Other Cardinals Forever at the event included Andrea Cottrell which finished 4th in the 100-meter breast stroke, Silvia Guerra who touched 16th.  Alina Kendzior picked up 11th in the 100-meter backstroke, with Casey Fanz in 15th and Lainey Visscher in 16th.  Cottrell and Kendzior placed 15th ant 16th in the 200-meter IM, and Sophie Cattermole was close behind.  A couple of Cardinal guys were there as well, with Zach "Batman" Hartung picked up a 4th place finish in the 200-meter butterfly, and Carlos Claverie got a top 3 finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, and just missed the podium in the 200-meter IM.

Finals Week Blues -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Slow Scheduling

Now that I am a graduate student taking only online classes, the phrase "Finals Week" does not immediately induce the gray hair producing stress that it used to. I still have my work to do, but thousands of other students have spent every waking moment since Wednesday preparing for finals in classes they may have struggled in or may have never even attended. To all of those that are still struggling, I wish you good luck. To those finished for the semester, I say enjoy your break. And for you lucky dogs that are graduating in December, I say enjoy it; the real world isn't quite as fun as you might have been led to believe.

The reason I bring up finals is because there is always a lull in scheduling during this time. Student-athletes are just that, students, and they have to take finals just like everyone else. The men's basketball team played Wednesday against Southern Illinois, plays today against Texas Southern, and then doesn't play again until next Saturday against Eastern Kentucky. For those that didn't notice, we are in the midst of the "directional schools" segment of the schedule. The women's team, likewise, hasn't played since the Kentucky game on Sunday and won't play until tomorrow against WKU before their schedule ramps back up with games on Wednesday and Friday. The only scheduled items on the all sports calendar this week have been the Short Course World Championships for swimming and the indoor track Hoosier Invitational yesterday.

Kelsi Worrell has been busy in Windsor, Canada at the swimming tournament. Tuesday she was part of a winning American squad that took gold in the women's 400 free relay. Wednesday she set an American record of 2:02.89 in the 200 fly on her way to a silver medal. She then helped set another record as she was part of a gold medal winning 4x50 women's medley team that set a new world record. Continuing her relay success, Worrell capped off her tournament with a gold in the 4x50 mixed medley. It is great to see Kelsi continuing to have success, and I imagine we might see her again at the next summer games.

The weight

Two Cardinals saw success in Bloomington yesterday at the Hoosier Invitational. In her first throw of the season, senior Dolly Nyemah placed second in the weight throw with a distance of 19.68m. I don't have any idea what the weight throw is, but I guarantee you that I can't throw the weight nearly 65 feet. A familiar name is next on the list, as Emmonnie Henderson placed first in the women's shot put at the meet while setting a school record of 17.17m. Like most other students, the track and field athletes will be heading home for winter break, but head coach Dale Cowper says, "We look forward to getting things going again when the students return for spring semester classes."

Hardware Inbound?

Louisville's football season did not end quite the way we all wanted. It still isn't over, but I'm quite sure we'd all prefer that we wouldn't have to be split screening the bowl game and the men's basketball game against IU. However, there is still one major piece of hardware at play. I'm not talking about the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl trophy, whatever that may be. I'm talking about the Heisman Trophy. We've been talking about Lamar Jackson's chances all season, to the point where Las Vegas sportsbooks closed the betting lines on the Heisman Race because it was considered a foregone conclusion. Lamar Jackson was 1/30 or 1/50 at the time, depending on who you believe. Since the end of the season, I have heard reports of some books reopening their lines, but Lamar Jackson is still the heavy favorite, with Deshaun Watson coming second at 14/1. 

As Paulie mentioned yesterday, Deshaun Watson took home the Davey O'Brien, which is not particularly surprising. I really don't know who votes for these things, but I expected he would win it, even though he wasn't even the best quarterback in his conference. I say that because Lamar Jackson was voted as the ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, All-ACC First Team QB, and Pro Football Focus All-ACC First Team QB. So, I'm sorry, Deshaun, but what was it that Jeff Walz said about participation trophies?

Lamar has already claimed the Maxwell and the Walter Camp Awards. Of the 28 players who have previously won both of those awards in the same season, 22 have gone on to win the Heisman. This seems like a concerning percentage, but keep in mind that Lamar Jackson also did what only two Heisman winners have ever done with 30 passing TDs and 20 rushing TDs, and both of them needed their bowl games to do it. Only Jordan Lynch has ever achieved the passing/rushing yardage splits that Lamar has, and he played for Northern Illinois. If Lamar Jackson doesn't win the Heisman Trophy tonight, I think it will be the biggest robbery in sports award history.

The Beginning of a Journey -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

A Background

For those of you that might have missed Friday's post or yesterday's radio show, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Case Hoskins, the newest writer here at Cardinal Couple. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Louisville's JB Speed School in May of 2016, and I will begin my Master's Degree in Engineering Management next week. I work for a consulting engineering firm in Louisville, the city where I was born and raised. Many recent graduates my age or students a bit younger than me will tell you that they can't wait to get out of Louisville, but, while I love to travel, I could not be happier to call this city home.

2015 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta

I have always been an avid sports fan, following the Louisville Cardinals (whoo!), Cincinnati Reds (ugh), and Seattle Seahawks (not a bandwagon fan, I promise) most closely. I enjoy watching most every sport and absorb every bit of knowledge about rules, players and stats that I can. I'm a bit of an oddball, I suppose. I haven't come here to bombard you with stats or hot takes; simply tuning into ESPN can give you plenty of those. Instead, like the rest of the contributors here at Cardinal Couple, I bring the voice of a fan first. I realized too deep into engineering school how much I liked the idea of sports journalism. The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized that structured journalism would just steal my individuality in writing. I've not taken any journalism courses, nor have I had a writing course since high school (thanks dual credit classes), and you may come to notice these things as I write. I apologize in advance for any egregious errors. I appreciate any and all feedback, and if you ever think I'm wrong, feel free to let me know!

My first foray into writing came after a particularly frustrating game against NC State in 2014. I jumped onto Card Chronicle and penned an article I titled "A View From the Student Section". In it, I wrote about my thoughts during the game regarding the game play and the stadium atmosphere. My goal was to show people what it was like from our side of the horseshoe and to convince people that there were students who cared, not just the ones that got up and left when the tailgate hangover set in. I am not the only student that cares deeply about UofL athletics, and I'm not trying to put myself above other students that don't care quite as much. They paid for their tickets just like me, and they're welcome to do with those tickets what they wish. But I digress. I wrote AVFSS (as I chose to abbreviate it), with a potential series in mind, but I never expected it to take off like it did. After the first installment was posted to the front page of the site, I was encouraged to continue the series. Through two seasons of football and basketball, there were a total of 37 installments of AVFSS. Here is a link to the first if you'd like to take a look, and feel free to peruse the others.

 A View From The Student Section

After last season, unsure of my future in school, I decided that A View From the Student Section had served its purpose, and I chose to end the series. My thirst for writing, however, had not been quenched. A couple of weeks ago I reached out to Paul, a long time family friend and reader of AVFSS, and asked if an old offer to come over to the Couple still stood. We worked out some details, and here I am!

The Future and My Role

I look forward to bringing to the site a fresh perspective on fresh topics. Obviously, men's sports are covered in depth all over the place. I don't intend to compete with them, merely to bring my views on those sports. I'll be providing narrative style writings about games, both home and away, as well as a general roundup of most men's sports just so you don't have to go too far to find the news. I'll be occupying the Sunday spot and may dip my toes into some women's sports when I get the chance.

I'm extremely excited to get started. I'm looking forward to successful seasons from our men's sports teams this year, and I can't wait to bring my views and thoughts on those sports to you. Thanks to Paulie for extending this opportunity and thanks, ahead of time, to all of you for being a part of my new journey!

Kelsi Worrell Earns Gold

I thought I was finished with this article yesterday afternoon, but news out of Rio last night demanded my attention. Despite not being selected as a member of the US team for the 4x100m medley relay final, Kelsi Worrell earned her first Olympic gold medal because of her role in helping the USA win their semi-final heat. Why Olympic rules allow the changing of team members between heats is beyond me, but congratulations to Kelsi, nonetheless! She has worked hard for years, and the smile on her face shows just how much that medal means to her. It has been a joy to follow her career to this point, and I hope to see her standing on the podium in Tokyo.
