CARDS WBB HEADED TO AUSTIN, TX FOR A SATURDAY CONTEST VS. #12 DRAKE
We now know who the Louisville women's basketball squad will begin against in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and where they'll play..
The Cardinals will face the #12 seed Drake Bulldogs in Austin, TX on Saturday. They are the #4 seed in Texas' bracket in Austin and would face the winner of Texas and East Carolina if they beat the Bulldogs.
Drake got in the "dance" by beating Belmont in the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Drake went 22-9 in the 2022-23 season and beat Missouri State, Illinois St and Belmont in the MVC Conference Tournament. Old timers (like me) will remember when Louisville and Drake were both in the MVC together.
Drake head coach Allison Pohlman |
Allison Pohlman is the head coach of the Bulldogs and is in her second season of leading the Bulldogs. She's been on the staff since 2007 and got the head coaching job when former head coach Jennie Baranczyk left to take the Oklahoma job.
Maggie Bair, a 6'3" senior forward, leads Drake in scoring at 16.9 ppg.
The Cards faced Belmont early in the season and beat them 75-70. The Bulldogs were 1-1 against them. Both the Cards and Drake played Lindenwood and both defeated them pretty easily...if you're looking for similar foes during the season.
The televised NCAA tournament schedule for Saturday games hasn't been released yet , so we don't know what to tell you as far as time they play goes or what ESPN channel the Cards will be on.
The top seeds? South Carolina, Indiana, Virginia Tech and Stanford (in Louisville's region Seattle II). There are just two regional sites...Greenville and Seattle. There will be two regionals at each -- hence, the Seattle I and II and Greenville I and II.
We'll have much more this week about the Cards and the Tournament so don't miss a day of Cardinal Couple. There are plenty of sources to find brackets for the women's basketball tournament, I found a nice one at cbssports.com but there are plenty of place to get them on line. ESPN always has a good bracket, too

An OK draw, Cards avoided South Carolina, Texas we handled at the start of the year. Drake is a challenge but Cards should do them also. Then, to Seattle. Not the most friendly fan trip situation but doable.

We beat Texas without Harmon, arguably their best player. But we did play one of our better games against them. I was hoping for a drivable venue. Austin is just too far away.
