WBB, Softball, Lacrosse and The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

The broadway show Rent has a well known song, Seasons of Love, that opens up the 2nd act of the play, the theme of the song is about the passing of time, one year, or 525,600 minutes, in the story of the show.

I sometimes find myself thinking of sports seasons in terms of a lifetime. The season opener is the birth of the new team (pre-season could be gestation?), and the end of post-season play being death of that particular team, that season. There will not be another team and season exactly like that one. The analogy doesn't work on all levels, so don't overthink it, but it's interesting to think in those terms about seasons.

Basketball

There are only 3 home games for women's basketball left in the regular season.  This a team and season, that is in its retirement years.  Years of travel and enjoying a life of leisure (hopefully).

Basketball hosts Miami today for a 3 p.m. tip.  This is the annual pink game, where the promotional attention turns to breast cancer awareness and fund raising.  A worthy cause, to be sure.

We previewed this game a lot yesterday on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour, we discussed the Miami bigs and how the Cards will game plan for them.  We expect challenges for the likes of Sam Fuerhing, Kylee Shook, and Bionca Dunham, and we expect the guards to focus on Asia Durr.  We're looking for big games from the likes of Dana Evans, Arica Carter, and Jazmine Jones.

If you can't make it to the KFC Yum! Center, you can catch this one on ESPN2, or the usual ESPN-based streaming platforms.

Don't forget to wear pink.

Softball

A team and season that's still in its toddler stage is the Softball season.  The home opener is still two weeks away as the team takes its tradition tour of warmer climes to start its season.

This weekend sees the Cards participating in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge alongside UNC, and competing with Michigan and Northwestern.

After a disappointing pair of losses Friday, particularly with the loss to Northwestern after having an 8-3 lead early in the game, the Cards rallied to knock off a very well regarded Michigan team yesterday. Michigan is ranked 14th, 15th, or 17th in the nation, depending on which poll you look at, so this is a big win for the Cards.

Originally scheduled for a 12:30 start, the game yesterday didn't get underway until almost 5pm due to weather.  A low scoring affair, the Cards got the win, 2-1, on scoring in the 6th inning.  After Michigan got on the scoreboard with a 2-out single, hit-by-pitch, and an RBI hit in the 5th, the Cards strung together some success in the home half of the 6th.  Sidney Melton got a single, Celene Funke got to take a stroll.  Megan Hensley came up and got an RBI to get Melton home, and then an error on the throw from centerfield, let the speedy Funke get home for the 2nd score.

Danielle Watson takes the win to put here at 2-2 on the season.

Today, Holly Aprile will lead her team, again, against Northwestern, looking for more redemption, with the game already underway.  Taylor Roby is in the circle for the Cards.

Lacrosse

Another toddler team, Lacrosse took the loss against a top 20 and very good Denver team yesterday, 18-2.  This just wasn't a pretty result, but this is what rebuilding will look like.  If there's any positive to this one, the Cards were down 11-0 at halftime, so there was some improvement in the mile high snow in the 2nd half.

The Blalock sisters, Caroline and Sarah, account for the UofL scoring, Caroline going it on her own, and also providing the assist for her twin, Sarah.

The Lacrosse team will have their home opener Saturday the 23rd against Mercer.  First draw is at noon.  While there isn't any video listed for this one, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being on ACC Network Extra, we'll update if we find information to that effect as time draws closer.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

It's good to be back in the states after a lovely vacation to Australia and New Zealand (mostly NZ).  It was also great to be back in the studio for the CCRH.  We've switched the streaming over to Youtube, so the stream is available at:

We had a good discussion (even if I was a little out of the loop on some of the goings on) about Basketball, Softball, and Lacrosse.

Check it out!  Jared and Daryl couldn't be there, so Mike Gilpatrick joined us and dropped his usual drops of random knowledge and bad jokes.  He definitely got a rise out of us with his bread joke in the opening.

  2. Why haven't I watched Miami yet this year? From the sounds of it, looks like the bigs have their work cut out for them, but I have full confidence they will put in work.
    GO CARDS!!!

    1. "B" and Emese are legitimate in the paint and Cornelius and Gray can get the ball to them. This is going to be a battle, K.

  3. Dunham on bench 2nd 1/2 after 10 points as a sub for Fuehring while Fuehring played 2nd 1/2 for total of 4 points per the game.

No great defensive actions or rebounds by Fuehring over Dunham. What do you think was the story behind that decision as it did not look like Fuehring came to play.
