Emmonnie wins...Softball loses -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

EMMONNIE HENDERSON WINS DISCUS

A day after taking the shot put in the ACC Championships, Emmonnie Henderson returned to the winner's stand with a first place finish in the discus.

Henderson took her second event title in the discus throw with a mark of 182-01 and teammate Dolly Nyemah finished third with a throw of 158-09. Both earned first team All-ACC honors. "E" was also named the ACC Women's Field MVP.

Henderson will now prepare for NCAA Championship competition at the end of the month.

Overall the women's team finished sixth in the standings in their first-ever ACC Championship event weekend.

A big "high-five" and congratulations to the Edwardsville, IN native who continues the proud tradition of the shot-put and discuses tossers that UofL women's track has had over the last few years!

SOFTBALL SEASON ENDS WITH 2-1 LOSS

Maryssa Becker pitched her heart out again for Louisville yesterday in the elimination round of the NCAA Columbia Regional...but the Cards fell 2-1 to Indiana State in eight innings.

Becker had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning and the game was scoreless after seven innings. The top of the eight brought two Sycamore runs across the plate and...although Kelsi Jones banged a one-out home run over the left-center wall...the Cards could not push another runner around the bases and bow out of the NCAA Tournament.

In fifteen innings of softball Friday and Saturday, the Cards managed one run and seven hits. Coach P was conciliatory in defeat:

" I thought Maryssa pitched a tremendous game. Once again, we hit the ball hard bit it was right at people. Credit Indiana State for being able to manufacture runs."

And...in the final analysis...that is the objective. Runs.

  1. Terrible that in 15 innings the team could not produce but one run. A good coach can manufacture runs (Indiana State, a team with a losing record did it). Same old thing again, year after year. We don't know how to bunt, sacrifice, steal bases and always end up in the bottom of the league stats in these categories which are the main ways to manufacture runs. Ladies do not improve over the four years they play here. We let the wrong coach go last year. Time for a change if we ever want to get past ncaa region play.

    1. Hmmm...I don't think Coach P (to use Walzian philosophy) has ever gotten a RBI in her 15 years here. The catch was, for the past couple of years, our pitching would blow up on us in NCAA Regional play. This year, it was the hitting that was silenced. I don't think that it's time to set Coach P aside. Her commitment to bringing in younger coaches is encouraging. Hopefully...they and her...can complete the requisition of girls who can drive home girls standing on bases. With the ACC membership, we have an unprecedented access and availability to recruits.

Coach will need to find some players (either within roster or in recruiting) that can hit consistently enough to manufacturer RBI's. Especially with good hitters Jones, Duncan, Soles and Arion graduating.

Becker will keep Louisville in games. McCombs looks to be a steady and dependable #2 in the circle.

We should be winning these 2-1, 1-0 and 3-2 games. The challenge is to find the batters that can put us on the high side of 2-1, 1-0 and 3-2 games.

  2. Last time I checked, it was the coach who gave signals for bunts, steals, etc. that moved players into scoring positions so rbi can be manufactured. All coach P does is stand by the dugout and not even near the coaches box....guess you have seen other coaches do this also...NO. Ever wonder why the pitching failed in the previous regions. Seems like a trend had ben established. A good coach should know how to motivate a pitcher, not tear them down. As for recruiting, do you really believe that having the Louisville Slugger travel team is going to do it? What did we have this year 23 players and only traveled with 18....has to be good for the five left home. Sorry but something is wrong. P has been good in getting us to where we are today but she does not have the skills to take us to the next level.

    1. A bit hard on the coach, IMHO. Let's face it. SEC is women's college softball. Take a look at the "sweet 16". 8 SEC schools! Kentucky included. Three PAC 12. ACC with just two.

Cats still alive and UofL fans, don't be so hard on your softball coach!

    2. With the prevalence of "sign stealing" and such, many teams have gone to different methods of instructing batters and base runners. I am fairly certain that UofL Softball has not abandoned relaying signals to these players...it's coming from different sources than the third base coach.

  3. Unfortunately we manufactured as many runs for Indiana as we made for ourselves yesterday. Our decision-making created Indiana second run which lead to the go ahead run and our loss. Fielders turning back to the runner made a single into a double which led to the first run. We just make bad fielding decisions. I felt bad for our pitcher on both days who gave us everything she had on both days which should have been enough for wins, not losses. Something is wrong.

  4. Huge Huge congrats to E! Two ACC Individual Championships as a Sophomore! She's getting a little U of L sports dynasty going all on her own.
