Bears hunting Deines? -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

DEINES FUTURE UNCERTAIN AS WE ROLL INTO JUNE

The transfer process. It can be a tricky thing. When Megan Deines' name popped up as a transfer possibility/probability/seen on (fill in your choice campus) with (fill in your name choice)...the general consensus was this:

If she wants a year of significant playing time somewhere, then a transfer would be a logical choice. A mid-major seemed logical as well.

We've heard Kansas State and Nebraska mentioned as possibilities. A buddy who knows very little about her or the program speculated that she might stay close to the Louisville area and go to Bellarmine or NKU. Maybe even WKU. We're not buying that hypothesis...even with your money.

Deines has had an interesting career at UofL in three years. She started 15 games in 2012-13. Averaged 4.9 points on a team that went to the NCAA final game and a team that beat Baylor. She also hit 20 of 65 threes that year. She 2013-14 campaign dropped off..just 1 start in 33 games. 3.2 ppg average and was 5 for 23 from beyond the arc. Last season? She played in 24 games, no starts. She missed nine straight with an ankle injury.

She is a Missouri girl, however (Glendale)...and the speculation arose that she might be interested (or vice versa) in a Missouri school. Here's an interesting piece from a Missouri State blogger that speculates on the possibilities of Deines and Missouri State:

I've been asked numerous times if I thought that Kellie Harper and Missouri State would look to go the transfer route, specifically with high-profile area products such as Megan Deines (Glendale-Louisville), Michaela and Moriah Dapprich (Branson-Wichita State), and Kyndal Clark (Webb City-Drake) all announcing their decision to leave their current institutions within the last two weeks.

In short, the answer is no.

If we entertain the idea, assuming there is mutual interest from both sides and roster spots available, there wouldn't be a possibility of the Dapprichs or Clark coming to Springfield, as it is virtually impossible to transfer within the conference.

While the idea of an Ozarks return is nice and while we can certainly agree that the previous regime dropped the ball by not offering any of the three players, the chances of seeing them in maroon and white are about as likely as it is for me to stop binge eating Insomnia Cookies and Andy's.

Deines is  a different conversation.

Assuming that Missouri State and Louisville don't continue the current trend of playing every other year as they have in 2011-12 and 2013-14, Deines would likely be a viable option.

After sitting out a year, Deines would slide nicely in the spot vacated by Kenzie Williams, forming what could be the Valley's most dynamic backcourt in two years with Liza Fruendt and Riley Rose.

But, is it really necessary?

So....for the time being...she stays on the UofL roster until she heads elsewhere or decides maybe being a reserve on a top ten WBB team may not be such a bad gig after all.

Louisville Women's Basketball -- New Conference, New Players...Same Goal. -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS? CARDS WBB READY FOR ACC

A cursory look at the 2014-15 UofL women's basketball roster by an unknowledgeable observer might lead to the conclusion that Jeff Walz didn't have very good recruiting success in 2012 or 2013. Out of the 13 players on Walz's roster, only three have the sophomore or junior class designation by their names.  Truth be told, neither Megan Deines, Cortnee Walton nor Emmonnie Henderson have blossomed into Angel McCoughtry or Shoni Schimmel careers...yet...but in the words of the late, great Frank Sinatra...the best is yet to come and won't that be fine?

Today at CARDINAL COUPLE...we'll look at this trio.

Henderson has worked hard in the off-season and now brings a body ready to handle the rigors of a full season of women's college basketball. That braggadocio and self-confidence from the sophomore remains...so we expect the "E" to emerge even further...improving on a freshman season that had it's ups and downs for her. The "whack-a-mole" defense that piled up personal fouls on her faster than Bria Smith on a breakaway at times has hopefully been retired. We hear her across the lane drive and shoot is even better than last year. The lone second year paint player should be an essential part of the UofL inside game.

Word also gets to us that junior Megan Deines has put in the hours and is ready to contend for the title of zone buster beyond the arc. Walz will need a couple of these long ranger bombers to replace the three that have graduated. Deines, who started as a freshman, has the tools...a nice release and follow through. Let's hope she can live up to the Jeff Walz axiom of needing "makers" in his "shooters".

Cortnee Walton has fulfilled the 'role player' scenario quite well over the last two years. With injuries and foul trouble being a constant part of Louisville's inside game the past two years...the junior has been pressed into action at both center and power forward. She's delivered at both for UofL and finds herself a part of the strongest collection of paint players that Jeff Walz has ever assembled at Louisville. How she'll fit into the mix of Vails, Dyer, Hammond, Hines-Allen and Henderson ultimately will depend on how she performs and where Walz needs her...but you can expect this one thing. She will give you 100% for the duration.

This "middle classes" combination from Illinois, Missouri and Arizona hasn't received the accolades and press coverage of the five freshman currently on campus. The 2010 (Shawnta Dyer, Polly Harrington, Shoni Schimmel, Nita Slaughter, Charmaine Tay and Sherrone Vails) class was more highly ranked. The 2011 Class ( Sara Hammond, Jude Schimmel and Bria Smith) has accomplished more than them.

It matters not. The goal of Jeff Walz's basketball teams is to reach and perform well in the NCAA Tournament. That type of achievement requires more than a couple of superstars. It takes 13-14 women's playing together and ready to step in and step up when situations arise.

In Henderson, Walton and Deines...you'll find those qualities and abilities. Skills that Coach Walz will count on and receive in the upcoming season.

Much to be thankful for -- Jeff Walz keynote speaker at UofL WBB Luncheon -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

The UofL women's basketball luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Galt House drew a sold out crowd of over 700 Cards fans. Included in them was one very thankful man.

Jeff Walz.

Walz spent the majority of his time on the dais thanking those who have helped make Cardinal womens basketball what it is today. Beginning with guys at the top...President James Ramsey and Athletic Director Tom Jurich...Walz went through the support staff and those associated with the Louisville squad and expressed his thankfulness with their efforts and sacrifices in keeping the program going.
Paulie interviews Coach in the pre-banquet presser

He also spent time thanking his players for the success the program has had. As he likes to say:

"I've never scored a basket or grabbed a rebound in seven years here...but I'm very thankful and proud of those who have."

Lola Walz speaks for Coach at the presser

Walz is also very thankful for the fans who support WBB. University of Louisville women's basketball ranks seventh in attendance of both the men's and women's basketball programs in the ACC. There will be places the Lady Cards play this year that won't have as many in the stands as there were fans at the tables attending for yesterday's tipoff luncheon.

Jeff Walz is also real. What you see is what you get.

He tells it like it is and he makes sure his players know that
up front before they ever make that first visit to campus. If you follow the coaches instructions and give it your best...you and he will get along quite well. Two classic Walz axioms:

"I have players that tell me they are shooters. I tell them that's fine...but I need makers."

"I have players come up to me during games and tell me that they are wide open. I tell them...there's a reason for that."

This year's team, according to Jeff, could have a different look. Gone are the three-point bombers Shoni, Nita and Tia. Returning and arriving on campus is a strong arsenal of post and paint players that will likely provide the team's best chances of scoring.

Walz also took time to catch the crowd up on the four graduated seniors. Shoni is touring the nation...passing up six figures to play EuroBall, to speak to Native American groups and conventions. Nita Slaughter is a graduate assistant at Drury. Tia Gibbs is the leading scorer in her EuroLeague. Asia Taylor has been the Player of the Week for two straight weeks in her EuroLeague.

I was able to get some great interviews with assistant coach Sam Purcell, Megan Deines, Syd Brackemyer, Arianna Freeman (our next possible intern at CC?) and we'll play those sound-bytes plus the pre-banquet interview with Walz and much more on the Saturday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO on Crescent Hill Radio at 11 a.m.

All in all, a great 90 minutes with the Cardinals and plenty of Cardinal fans on Tuesday. Thanks to Ira Green for the great pre-banquet debriefing for me and Worldwide and also thanks to Matt Andrews (admittedly not quite out of baseball mode yet) for handling the emcee duties with aplomb. And...it was good to see many of our CARDINAL COUPLE readers and listeners and chat about UofL sports.

Jeff Walz is a thankful man. As Cardinal fans, we should be thankful also. Thankful that he is our head coach.

31 days until the first game. 31 was Asia Taylor's number at Louisville and also freshman Syd Brackemyer's number.

Friday Cardinal Couple -- How will the loss of Breedlove and Niamke affect 2014-15 UofL WBB?

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- How much will Louisville WBB miss Monny and Starr?

Monny Niamke and Starr Breedlove will not be on the 2014-15 University of Louisville women's basketball team. A look at the 2014-15 roster shows eight returning players and five freshmen are on campus and already attending summer classes. The question was posed to me about the departure of Monny and Starr and how it will affect the team.

UofL loses two of the three "attack yorkies"...a term that Worldwide, Jenny and I coined several years ago when Shelby Harper and Jude Schimmel were the backup guards at UofL. The girls were small in size but ferocious with their on-court tenacity and ability to hound and pressure larger opponent guards.

If Starr had stayed, free from the concussion syndrome that
kept her sidelined for most of the 2013-14 season, her role would have been slightly increased but her chances of breaking the top three guards very remote. Bria, Jude and Megan have that role wrapped up...although it will be interesting to see who handles the offense as point guard. Both Bria and Jude logged plenty of time there last season. So...who moves to "2" and replaces Shoni?

The truth is...we just never got to see enough of Starr to make a firm determination on how she would have fit into the 2014-15 roster. And, for a lot of college players, playing time is everything...so down the road she goes in search of it. Our best guess would be a NAIA program where she can play and start right away.

As far as Monny goes, she was a late game defensive replacement that never developed much of a shot or ability to run the offense in her time at Louisville. She was recruited by Walz out of France, spent a year at Lindsey Wilson (NAIA) sat the bench at Louisville and now heads back to the NAIA somewhere.

Louisville currently has four listed guards if you add sensational 5'8" incoming freshman Arica Carter. At 5'8" she's too tall by our judging standards to be an "attack Yorkie"...but has the game to be a defensive stopper. We can pretty much surmise she would have been that "4th" guard that Walz would have gone to if Monny and Starr had stayed. She also plopped in a ton of points in high school as a combo guard at Long Beach Poly.

One couldn't blame Megan Deines for occasionally looking over her shoulder nervously. The reports we're getting is that she's really picked her game up as she prepares for her junior year. We're pretty sure she's looking for more playing time than she had as a sophomore.

So, the roster sits at 13. We have this feeling that there could be another announcement or two when we get to August. A speculated transfer, ex-UCF guard Briahanna Jackson, is 5'4" and would qualify as "attack Yorkie" material. She was also CUSA freshman of the year and was averaging 17 points a game at the Orlando school in 2013-14 before leaving the squad. If she does end up at Louisville, with 14 games under her belt in 2013-14...we surmise she wouldn't be available under after the first semester of the 2014-15 season....but we're no experts on NCAA eligibility and guidelines. As of today, Jackson hasn't sent any word out on where she'll be spending the 2014-15 season.

There is always the possibility that Walz could also have a future Card he hasn't laid on the table yet in terms of transfers. We've been surprised before on late announcements. The mad scientist always has a surprise or two tucked away in the deep recesses of the 2nd floor SAC laboratory/offices. He's even taught 16 month old daughter Lola how to effectively end press conferences.

So... despite the loss of two reserve guards and four outstanding seniors...Walz still has plenty of Cards to shuffle and deal. Coach will tell you that players earn their time. Asia, Tia, Shoni and Nita earned their spots. They'll be hard to replace. Who will grab those departed minutes?

The clock is ticking.

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- More on #4 Nita Slaughter

Cards move on without Slaughter

Tia GibbsAP Photo/James CrispSixth-year senior Tia Gibbs started in Antonita Slaughter's spot on Saturday.

What Louisville coach Jeff Walz wouldn't give for a simple ankle sprain, something that might require one of his players to sit out a couple of weeks and get physical therapy before quickly returning to the floor.

Don't misunderstand. Walz isn't rooting for that. He'd merely trade it in a heartbeat for the gut-wrenching, season-ending injuries that seem to plague his team every season.

"All of ours seem to be year-ending," Walz said. "I feel bad for the kids."

Walz said Monday morning that his team is still absorbing last week's news that senior guard Antonita Slaughter will miss the rest of the season after she was diagnosed with a blood clot in her lung.

Slaughter collapsed on the bench last Tuesday during the Cardinals' game against Missouri State. The clot was discovered in follow-up examinations. Walz said Monday that doctors believe the clot was not related to her collapse, but was discovered during the subsequent evaluation. The collapse, doctors believe, was caused by a "cardiac event" and Slaughter is still being evaluated. In the meantime, Slaughter has begun to take blood thinners, the treatment expected to last six or seven months.

"They don't know if the clot was there before or after," Walz said. "But they are two separate incidents. They are still trying to determined what caused the cardiac event."

Asia Taylor
AP Photo/Timothy D. EasleyTo help fill in for Antonita Slaughter's absence, power forward Asia Taylor moves to the wing position.

Slaughter was back on the Louisville bench Saturday for the team's game against Wright State. She came to shootaround before the game and she's back living on campus.

"Things have settled down. I think just seeing her have interaction with everybody, there's a big relief there," Walz said. "I mean, when she was taken off the court on a stretcher she was unresponsive. The kids were terrified. Everybody was. She wasn't able to give us a thumbs-up."

It wasn't until about 10 minutes after she left that court that Walz and the team got word that she was conscious and responsive.

"The medical people felt good about things at that point," Walz said.

Now the task for the Cardinals is to move forward and to replace Slaughter's production on the court. She was averaging 9.3 points a game in nine starts.

Walz is used to this part. Seniors Tia Gibbs and Asia Taylor missed last season with hip injuries. Junior Shawnta Dyer suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in December and missed the rest of the season.

"This is kind of what we've gone through the past four years," Walz said. "Players have to step up."

Walz said Slaughter's points will be the easiest thing to replace.

"We'll find the points. It's the intangibles she brought," Walz said. "She defended well, and we are really trying to figure out that role. She is 6-foot-1 and with her length, she could defend the perimeter.

"Somebody doesn't have to shoot the ball as well, but somebody else has to become a threat, because Antonita gave us the ability to spread the floor."

Slaughter's absence on the floor means Taylor will move to the wing from power forward.

Sophomores Megan Deines and Cortnee Walton will pick up the slack as well, and Gibbs, a sixth-year senior, might have to play a few more minutes.

Gibbs missed the past two seasons with shoulder and hip injuries and her time on the floor has been limited, but she started in Slaughter's spot on Saturday and played eight minutes.

"We are managing her minutes, we want to get her feeling better," Walz said of Gibbs. "We will try to play her more if she's able."

Walz admires the way his team has handled the situation over the past six days.

"Nobody has ever been through anything like that," Walz said. "I'm not sure how we even kept playing after that."

Party crashers turned party planners

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( JENNY O'BRYAN BRINGS US THE HUMP DAY EDITION OF CARDINAL COUPLE AND SHE SHARES HER OBSERVATIONS ON LOUISVILLE WBB'S 127-40 WIN OVER PIKEVILLE. )

Louisville Women’s Basketball played their lone exhibition game on Tuesday afternoon with close to 5,000 elementary school kids (and a few of us adults who braved the noise) in attendance.  The kids were incredibly loud through out the game, but none moreso than when One Direction came on the jumbo tron and when the Cardinals hit the 100 mark.

As was expected, this was a lopsided affair. The starters for the Cards were Shoni Schimmel, Antonita Slaughter, Bria Smith, Asia Taylor and Cortnee Walton.  (These same 5 also started the second half.) The Cards started off on a 24-0 run and never looked back.  The halftime score was 67-14, with 11+ minutes left in the game the Cards hit the century mark, and at the buzzers merciful end the final was 127-40.

From the start, Pikeville was outclassed.  That is expected in an exhibition game.    This win is no real indicator of how the team will do against stiffer competition, those tests are yet to come.  With that disclaimer, I will share my thoughts and highlights of the game.

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back !
Asia Taylor, Tia Gibbs and Shawnta Dyer all looked great back on the court.

Actually, Asia looked phenomenal!  It is the best I can remember seeing her look on the court.  She was aggressive around the rim, on offense and defense.  She led the Cardinal scoring and notched a double-double with 19 pts. and 12 rebounds.   She was finishing at the rim, pulling down boards and playing an overall very strong game.   Her ability to move around traffic in the paint and get to the bucket is indicative of her athleticism.  Her pure athleticism is a thing of beauty.  I’d love to know where Coach ranks her, in terms of her athleticism, compared to players he has coached.    Asia remaining healthy and this active over the course of the season will be a key to the Cardinals success.

Hard to believe I have watched Gibbs on the sidelines more than I have on the court.  This young woman has battled such adversity.  I will be honest and say that I did not expect to see a healthy Tia back on the court.   I have never doubted her ability or willingness and desire, however, I have doubted her body.   She played with such enthusiasm and gusto, as if she knows this is her last chance.  Her first shot attempt was a made 3pt shot.  She would hit several more of those before the days end.  More importantly though, was her activity and movement on the court.  She was directing traffic with some of the younger guards, setting screens , and overall just busy on defense.   While I expected to see her markedly slower than her teammates, I did not really observe that.    Gibbs brings such confidence, poise, maturity and leadership to the team.  She is a role model for her teammates on and off the court (she will graduate with her MBA this year).   If Gibbs can remain healthy this year we fans are in for a real treat.  I expect there will not be a single moment that she is on the court giving anything less than 110%, knowing this is her swan dance.
Shawnta Dyer was a favorite of mine her sophomore season, which was a redshirt freshman year for her (having a heel issue her first year here).  It was so good to see her on the court.  She has the ability to be a very dominant post player on both sides of the ball.   She is wearing a very bulky knee brace, and it was evident that she has been off of the court for a year.  However, she still showed that fierceness of getting inside and going to the bucket.  She ended up with 14 points on the day.  Dyer is interesting to me.  I often look at the scoreboard and am in utter surprise at her points tallied.  She is not flashy, but she is a workhorse.  She gets out there and quietly goes about the task at hand.  Before you know it, she is second in scoring on the day.  Keeping Dyer healthy will give this team continued and added depth in the post.  Without a true center on the team (Sherronne Vails is out for the season with a knee injury) the combination of Taylor, Dyer, Hammond, Walton and freshman Emmonnie Henderson will be doing all the work in the paint.  These players provide a solid combination of strength, power, and athleticism to anchor the team.  This was sorely missing from last years team that was hobbled with injuries.  Dyer healthy makes this team all the more dangerous come March.

A box score for this game is at the end of the article.  There was not an obscene amount of fouls called, so, early indications are that the team is adjusting to the new hand check rules.

Monny Niamke is a point guard who sat out last year due to her transfer from Lindsay Wilson.  All I can say about her is that she has speed, handles and was not deterred from getting to the basket.  Starr Breedlove is another guard, and new to the team, who also showed cat-like quickness.  I thought Jude Schimmel was fast last season.  I would love to see the 3 of them in a footrace.  While close, my money is on Breedlove.  Breedlove also seems to be very athletic.

Emmonnie Henderson made her debut as a Cardinal on her birthday.  During a time out, while in the huddle, the fans sang Happy Birthday to her.  Not sure how in tune to that she was, as Coach Walz was his busy self with the team gathered.  Henderson is a strong, physical presence in the paint.  I expect, as is true for post players adjusting to the college game, we will see the real attributes she brings to the game during her sophomore season, much like we did with Hammond.   That being said she will be a huge presence in the paint for years to come.  She seemed to struggle hitting some gimmees near the basket, yet she stepped out to the elbow and drained a shot.   Her strength in pulling down rebounds will be invaluable as she adjusts to the physicality and speed of the college game.  I am so excited to see Henderson play and develop under Coach Walz.  She has all the tools to be a huge contributor for this program for years to come.

Of course, the team as a whole looked good.  They played hard the entire game, never taking their foot off of the gas.  That was a welcomed sight, knowing full well that last season they were plagued with mental absences from the game far too often.    Any lack of mention of a players contribution is not indicative of how they played, but I more wanted to showcase today the newcomers and what we can look forward to with them.

Dyer (14 points, five rebounds) and Gibbs (11 points, four assists) were among eight double-figure scorers for U of L.

Of course Shoni showed some flare, Jude got in on the sister act and was the recipient of a transition, beautiful behind the back, no look pass that she finished for two.  Hammond and Slaughter were both really pulling down boards.  Smith looked steady, Walton looks stronger and she and Deines both look more confident in their game.

My friends, I think this season has the opportunity to be very special.   This team appears to be clicking on all cylinders and has the chemistry and confidence in each other that I did not always see last year (certainly I did see it by the end of the season).  However, starting the season with that kind of confidence is exciting and I think it is going to make for a very fun season.

It all gets started on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m..  The team is talking about unfinished business.  They played today like they meant that.   Last season they were dubbed the party crashers, this season I believe they intend to be the party planners.   (Paulie stole that from someone, and I like it, so I stole it from him.)

If you do not have your season tickets yet, now is the time to get them.  It is going to be a fantastic year for women’s basketball; you are not going to want to miss a minute of it.   I look forward to seeing you at The YUM!
