WBB News. Good and Bad -- Wednesday Cardinal Couple

First...the Good

SHAWNTA' DYER INVITED TO NCAA CAREER IN SPORTS FORUM

Cards power forward Shawnta' Dyer has been invited to the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis from June 4-7.

The event is designed for student-athletes and post-graduate students who have an interest in working in sports. The participants are selected from the leaders on a particular campus and have received nominations by athletic administrators at their individual schools.

Dyer, who has already received her bachelor's degree back in June 2014 in physical education, is now going for a master's degree in elementary education. She has a 3.8 GPA

Shawnta' played in 93 games during her career at Louisville...including all 34 in the 2014-15 season.

The forum is one of more than 20 annual programs and resources that are organized and directed by the NCAA leadership development department. The Career In Sports Forum is specifically designed to give a broader scope of the career tracks and choices available within the sports business. The primary focus is on the college athlete.

Participants get interactive experiences with successful individuals in the sports business and a glimpse into their daay-to-day duties and responsibilities.

Congratulations to Shawnta' on this outstanding opportunity and we're sure she'll be a success in sports business, teaching or whatever the Marion, OH native charts her course toward.

Now...the bad news.

MINNESOTA LYNX WAIVE ASIA TAYLOR

With the deadline looming to reduce their roster to 12 players, the Minnesota Lynx released a couple of young forwards on Tuesday.

The team announced it had waived Shae Kelley and Asia Taylor in advance of Thursday's official league cut-down date.

Taylor, drafted at No. 36 by Minnesota in 2014, appeared in 22 games for the Lynx last year as a rookie. The 6-1 Louisville product averaged 2.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 7.9 minutes per game, shooting 52.5 percent from the field.

This is distressing news. Asia is one of the most popular and loved players to ever wear the red and black at Louisville, She was coming off a great Euro-basketball season in Italy and Israel and was looking forward to rejoining her Lynx teammates as they tried to capture the WNBA title this season.

The Lynx were heavy on forwards. Nine of them listed on the roster before A-Tayy and Kelley were waived.

No....Taylor didn't play much as a rookie. But, players usually improve dramatically between their rookie and second seasons in the league and Taylor is a strong rebounder and scorer underneath the basket.

We know she'll continue to impress in Europe. Who knows? Maybe another WNBA franchise might give her a look.

It's always hard to see one of the ones you really like get the release. Two things will come out of this, though:

1) A-Tayy will bounce back and go on to better things. she a fighter, she's a successful, confident person and is no stranger to adversity.

2) I've eliminated one of the two teams I planned on following this year in the WNBA. Dream on, Atlanta.

The Lynx stinks.

BY(Through)...Cards throttle Cougars 86-53 in NCAA first round -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE FORCES 30 TURNOVERS IN 33-POINT WIN

(Notes written in haste so that Jude or Bria won't pilfer them and run them to the other side of the den.)

The University of Louisville women's basketball team put four in double figures and had 24 steals in a rout of BYU Saturday afternoon in Tampa. In a game that got a bit "chippy" at times, Louisville physically out-played, out-hustled, out-fought and out-scored the Cougars to advance to the second round of the Big Dance.

The Cards started slowly...leading only 7-6 after 4 1/2 minutes but put together a 8-0 run to take a 15-6 lead after an Arica Carter lay-in in the paint. The Cards were forcing BYU miscues (8 in the first 6 1/2 minutes) and getting production inside from Myisha Hines-Allen and Shawnta' Dyer.

Louisville continued to score almost effortlessly against the Cougars...a 20-12 lead with 9:19 to go turned into 24-12 after two UofL steals-for-scores in 21 seconds. Another Carter jumper set the tally at 28-16 Louisville with 6:16 to go in the half and two back-to-back Mariya Moore threes stretched the lead out to 38-20 with 2:48 remaining.

The Cards took a 38-24 lead into the locker room, Hines-Allen with nine points and Dyer with eight to lead the way for UofL. The Cards had a 20-2 edge in points off turnovers, 14 steals and had forced 17 turnovers. Morgan Bailey was about the only Cougar weapon...with 10 points. Surprisingly, BYU had a 22-15 edge in rebounds.

UofL continued the onslaught to start the second half. The already aggressive, physical game took a down-turn when Cardinal freshman guard Moore floored BYU's Morrison with a left shoulder to the chin a minute into play. The flagrant+ 1 foul was painful to watch. The two Coach Jeff's exchanged words at the scorers table. A minute later, BYU's Lexi Eaton purposely tripped Bria Smith on a Cardinal fast break. Things were getting chippy on the floor but it didn't slow the Cardinal Express down.

Hines-Allen put Louisville ahead 45-26 with 15:33 to go and the Cougars' center Morgan Bailey picked up her fourth foul. Hines-Allen would connect again with 13:07 to keep Louisville cruising 52-34. They would continue to expand the lead and BYU was simply being run over by the more athletic Cards.

Schimmel completed her own 7-0 run against the Cougars with a steal and layup (the Cards 19th of the game) to make it 67-42 UofL with 5:48 remaining and the only thing in doubt by then was how many the Cards would win by. A minute later, Eaton picked up a technical foul for slamming the ball on the court after losing it out-of bounds.

The play-of-the night occurred with 3:55 remaining...Emmonnie Henderson corralling a rebound, leading the fast break and going coast-to-coast... putting in a layup to make it 79-44 Cards. It capped off a 19-2 UofL run and the play even brought a smile to Walz's face. Ariana Freeman gave the Cards their final basket and largest lead of the night when she hit a layup with 24 seconds left for the final 86-53 win.

Hines-Allen led Louisville with 19 points, Dyer added 13 and Jude and Bria had 11 each.

Louisville will face USF Monday night...a 73-64 winner over LSU in the SunDome in the game after Louisville's win.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Louisville Lacrosse improved to 7-2 on the season with a 15-6 win over Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg. It is the Cards first win in the ACC.
Faye Brust led the way for the Cards with four goals. Kaylin Morissette added three and had 12 draw controls.
The Cards jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and took a 8-3 advantage into halftime. Louisville wold score the first five goals of the second half to have a 10 goal advantage at 13-3 before coasting in with the win.
Louisville travels to Longwood for a Wednesday match next.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Senior Kelsi Jones went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs on the day as the University of Louisville softball team split an ACC doubleheader with North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards fell 4-2 in game one, but rebounded to take the second game 9-2. Louisville (17-8, 7-1 ACC) and North Carolina (21-6, 6-1) will meet at 12 p.m. Sunday to decide the series.

Sending the Seniors out in style...Louisville 77 - Boston College 60 -- Friday Cardinal Couple

Five hit for double figures in Cards win

Cards signing autographs after the game
The Louisville women's basketball team survived a three-point barrage from visiting Boston College and said goodbye to five seniors in the home finale for the Cards Thursday night. 10488 braved arctic-like weather in Louisville to see Bria Smith, Sherrone Vails, Shawnta' Dyer, Jude Schimmel and Sara Hammond...the Cards never in serious trouble against a trifecta-happy BC squad that attempted 26 and made 12.

Photo by Charlie Springer - UofL Card Game
They shot threes with the same voracity that Paulie hits the media buffet...and six different Eagles cashed in from the deep. BC attempted 47 shots in the game and 12 of the 22 baskets made were outside the arc.

After a pre-game ceremony honoring the seniors and their families (Jude's contingent numbered 18...) Jeff Walz started all five final year players and they jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes after six straight Dyer points and a Smith putback of a Hammond shot.

The Eagles countered with two straight threes by Nicole Boudreau to get within two...but it would be the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.

Walz kept the seniors on the court for the first six minutes before sending the freshmen Moore and Hines-Allen into the contest. Louisville had amassed a 14-6 lead at that point and would finish the 10-0 run with the duo connecting on a fast break layup by Hines-Allen and two Moore free throws.

It was 18-6 and you got the feeling that this one was already a "W".

Louisville led 31-15 with 7:34 showing on the clock after a spectacular Moore three and the talented freshman would run off five more straight points to give UofL a 36-23 edge with five minutes left in the half.

BC did not relent in the three-point efforts...taking 14 in the first twenty minutes and hitting seven. Kelly Hughes three with 86 seconds left in the half trimmed the Louisville advantage to 42-31 but Louisville added two Moore free throws and a Hines-Allen jumper with eight seconds to take the 46-31 lead to the locker room.

Photo by Charlie Springer - UofLCardGame.com
Moore (12 points) and Dyer (10 points) were already in double figures for the Cards and Louisville was outscoring the Eagles 30-8 in the paint. BC's halftime stats revealed numbers I don't ever remember seeing before...they were 11-22 from the floor (50%), 7-14 from three-point range (50%) and 2-4 from the free throw line (50%). Their eight rebound were four offensive (50%) and four defensive (50%).

The halftime activities featured an incredible group of a dozen or so Native American dancer groups that ranged from grade school aged performers to senior citizen dancers...all dressed in colorful and intricate tribal wear. They were accompanied by the steady drum beat and chant from the amazing Elk Soldier drum core...which featured almost a dozen drummers with one drumstick each -- beating a single drum in unison while chanting.

Photo by Charlie Springer --UofLCardgame.com
The Cards started the second half with the same senior starting five. The Eagles were back with the long range bombing, though and hit the first two threes they attempted to trim the Cardinal advantage to 46-37 a minute and a half into action. BC hung around within range for the first five minutes...trading baskets with Louisville and trailed 55-44 after a Ashley Kelsick score inside.

The Cards got busy after that and went on a 12-2 run to take a commanding 67-46 lead with 10:07 to play on a Hines-Allen putback of her own missed shot. That lead would stretch out to 77-51 with five minutes to play after a Vails jumper off a nice feed by Bria.

Walz had all the seniors back on the court with 3:24 remaining and substituted for them...one by one...to a standing ovation from the crowd with 31 seconds to go. Sherrone Vails was the last to leave. The Eagles finished with a 9-0 run...including (you guessed it) a couple more threes for the 77-60 final score.

Moore led the double figure producers with 18 points (including four threes) and Dyer finished with 13. Hines-Allen added 12, Jude (with three threes) and Bria totaled 11 points each. A quiet offensive night for Sara (1-8) and just three points in 26 minutes. Louisville forced 27 Eagles turnovers that produced 38 points and held a 22-5 second change advantage. The Cards also had 19 assists on 28 baskets.

Louisville was looking to improve from the outing against Notre Dame and they did accomplish that quite well. Walz wanted the defense to make BC take layups instead of threes, which didn't turn out so well, but Louisville did shoot 42.4% for the game...a blistering 56.3% in the first twenty and a so-so 29.4% in the final half.

All five seniors were featured in the post-game presser and they discussed their memories and feelings about their time at UofL. Bria fought back tears when she talked about the seniors 'sisterhood' , Sara spoke passionately about passing the torch to the underclassmen, Shawnta' recalled her trials with overcoming injuries, Sherrone spoke eloquently about her love for the fans and her teammates and Jude announced she is writing a book titled Dreamcatcher.

I got a little misty-eyed seeing them all there together and realizing it would be the last time I've ever see them up on that stage.

A fitting way for these five to end their KFC YUM! Center days. All played at least 19 minutes and all five scored. The task is not done for them yet...dangerous Virginia awaits them Sunday in Charlottesville and ACC Tournament play next Friday as a probable #3 seed.

In a season that has produced a very unexpected 24-4 record and the emergence of two of the best freshmen in the country...the contributions of Jude, Sara, Shawnta', Sherrone and Bria will long be remembered by Cardinal fans. Five women that bonded to make up the largest senior class in Jeff Walz's coaching history and five individuals that will go on to achieve even greater things when they leave campus and go out into the world after college. No matter where they end up...you get the feeling this fivesome will always be a tight-knit bond.

( A special thanks to Charlie Springer at UofLCardGame.com for sending photos of last night's game and the photos he has supplied us with all season long. Be sure to check out his Senior Night photo gallery at his fine website www.uoflcardgame.com)

WBB hosts Boston College for Senior Night -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

CARDS HONOR FIVE SENIORS TONIGHT

Sometimes, I wonder where the time goes...

It seems way less than five years ago that Shawnta' Dyer and Sherrone Vails arrived on the UofL campus. Vails...a big name paint player coming in to join a 2010-11 squad that was coming off Jeff Walz's only losing season at UofL. Dyer ready to roll but suffering a season-ending injury before she ever got to play. A freak heel fracture in a controlled scrimmage.

Shoni Schimmel, Nita Slaughter, Polly Harrington and Charmaine Tay were also a part of that freshman class. Names we'll either remember for a long time or bring up on rare occasions when discussing the history of UofL WBB.

Fast forward to 2011-12. Sara Hammond joined the ranks, Louisville winning the battle with UConn to gain her services. Jude Schimmel became the second off-spring of Cece and Rick to arrive on campus. Bria Smith reconsidered and said "no" to Virginia after a coaching change and "yes" to Coach Walz. Dyer was healthy and Vails was ready to swat shots and rebound.

108 victories these five have been a part of. Final fours and the biggest upset win in the history of women's college basketball. Opening a brand new downtown arena. Playing in three different conferences. Injuries, setbacks and times in the limelight and times watching from the seats on the sidelines.

Ah...the life of a college student-athlete.

Boston College comes into town tonight to be the Cards senior night opponent. Chances are...if head coach Erik Johnson could have picked another opponent or another night to face the #8 Cardinals...he probably would have traded with any of the ACC members on the spot. Unless the option was the Irish.

These Eagles are 12-15 and 4-10 in ACC play. Unless they pull off the biggest shocker in ACC Tournament play history in Greensboro, they'll be concentrating on studies instead of offensive sets in mid-March. They've lost three of their last five...Sue Semrau's Seminoles delivering the latest "L" 86-68 on Paulie's birthday Sunday.

These Bostonians shoot the three a lot. Kelly Hughes has made 74 of them this year for BC. They connect on an ACC-best 8.4 in 23 attempts per game.

A beautiful halftime ceremony is planned for Native American night. You won't want to hit the concession stands for those 15 minutes. Black Elk puts on a drumming show that will leave you in awe and admiration.

 A pre-game honoring of the five seniors will make you want to arrive early to the KFC YUM! Center. All five will start against the Golden Eagles.

Come out.

It's the final home game of the year for Louisville WBB. It's your chance to say "we love ya and goodbye" to "The Hammer", "Hey Jude", "I see ya Bria", "URinDyerNeedofme" and "Roni". Five women that came, saw, conquered, dealt with the pain and pleasure and performed for your entertainment. They deserve your applause one more time. They've certainly earned it.

It'll be on WKRD 790 and Cards TV if you can't attend. An expected good time is planned for all. Unless you're sporting Baldwin the Eagle's gear. We'll wrap it up later tonight...

Words From Walz

Jeff Walz did address the media yesterday about the seniors and the upcoming game against BC...amongst other things. Unfortunately, the Cardinal Couple crew was unable to attend the 11:30 a.m. presser. I suppose I'll have to wait until this evening to get another math lesson from the Mad Scientist. He did cover a variety of subjects in the 17 minutes oratory...including the WBB Squad getting grounded after the Notre Dame game and caravaning it back to the "Ville".

Check it out at the link below:

Cards "weather" VA Tech 69-49 -- Friday Cardinal Couple

10-0 second half run boosts Cards over VT

Despite a slow start in Blacksburg, Louisville used a 9-0 first half run and 10-0 second half run to pull away from a determined Virginia Tech squad Thursday night in Cassell Coliseum.

On Senior Night...in sub-zero weather...the Hokies heated up the gym early and led Louisville 7-3 four minutes into the contest. Louisville had four turnovers and a lone score on a Mariya Moore three.

Jeff Walz went to the bench and inserted Arica Carter, Shawnta' Dyer and Emmonnie Henderson to jump start the sluggish visitors and the Cards responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to lead 12-7 after Henderson scored inside, Moore knocked down another three and Bria Smith added a jumper.

The Hokies weren't ready to concede the first half just yet and cut the margin to 14-12 with 11:20 remaining. The Cards responded after the media timeout, though...steadily growing the lead back and going up 23-15 after a Carter free throw at the 5:25 mark.

The defense was solid for Louisville...finally figuring out the VT zone...but the offense wasn't playing up to par.

Two shot clock beaters...one off a Mariya Moore three with 1:13 to go in the half and a Smith jumper with 16 seconds to play boosted the Cards lead to 34-23 at the halftime break.

Louisville shot 50% for the first twenty and had forced 12 Va. Tech turnovers while committing eight first half miscues. Moore had nine points to lead UofL on three threes and Walz got strong minutes from Smith and Shawnta' Dyer ( 8 points each) off the bench.

The second half produced another sluggish Cardinal start.

Virginia Tech whittled the Cards lead to 36-31 two minutes in after a Conyers 3 and it was 38-33 with 17:00 to go.

Shawnta' Dyer went to work for Louisville, scoring five points in a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to give the Cards a 48-33 edge after her jumper at the 13:35 mark.

The Hokies would get no closer the rest of the way.

Louisville led 62-41 after Myisha Hines-Allen canned two free throws with five minutes left. Hammond and Henderson went to work after that...scoring the Cards final seven points for the 69-49 win.

A good win that saw the Cards play well at times and struggle in a few spots. Louisville placed three in double figures with Dyer's 15 leading the way. Moore ended up with (4) threes and two free throws for 14 points. Smith added 12 in 27 minutes of play.

Henderson turned in one of her best performances of the season with nine points and strong board play at both ends of the court. Hammond finished with eight, Hines-Allen six, Carter three and Jude two. Walz played them all...Vails started but went scoreless and Freeman saw late action with no points.

The Cards are the best defensive team in the ACC...in terms of opponent's point production...as they proved again tonight. 10-15 second half free throw shooting solidified the fact that Louisville is the worst free throw shooting team in the conference. Strong inside offensively, not much a threat from beyond the arc.

Strengths and weaknesses...but a stellar 23-3 overall and 11-2 record in the ACC.

Smith appears to be getting a little further out of the "self imposed" doghouse she's in...Walz mentioning she's been getting in extra shooting practice and finally understands "how to work hard after four years". We hope it continues...the off-the-bench role has worked two games in a row now.

Henderson keeps getting stronger in offensive recognition and performance but is still a defensive liability. It prevents her getting more minutes...since Walz is hesitant playing her and Hines-Allen together because of lack of defense when the two are on the court at the same time.

A 20-point win on the road on the opponent's senior night isn't anything to gripe about too much. Solid off-the-bench bench performances from Smith, "E" and Dyer is very encouraging.

We'll see if it can be maintained in the Cards next outing...a 'Big Monday' test at Notre Dame.

SIDEBARS

-- Did anyone else besides me notice that VT coach Dennis Wolff looks like "Mike" from the TV shows 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul'?

I was wondering I'd see Walt and Jessie in the stands eating Los Pollos Hermanos chicken...

-- What's up with that annoying bell that kept going off during the ESPN 3 broadcast? Was it someone's phone? Or was someone ringing a cowbell next to the announcers?

-- Walz's postgame with ESPN3 color analyst Mack McCarthy got scrapped after 15 seconds because of no audio. If you're going to interview, make sure the microphone is on...

-- Louisville is assured one of the "double bye" or top four spots in the upcoming ACC Tournament with NC State's win over Miami Thursday night.

-- ESPN3 play-by-play announcer Danny Nokes has a whiney voice...especially when the Cards messed up or the Hokies made a big shot. It got annoying. If the delay hadn't been so bad between TV & radio, I would've bailed on ESPN3 audio. Maybe I'm spoiled by the smooth call of Matt Andrews and A.J. game after game. This "Hokie homer" mirrors the team he covers...

Cards tame Tigers 81-49 -- Friday Cardinal Couple

32-3 run boosts Cards past Clemson

Louisville used a 32-3 run beginning in the first half and continuing halfway through the second half to bury Clemson 81-49 in Littlejohn Arena Thursday night in ACC action.

Shawnta' Dyer had 20 points, 8 rebounds and no turnovers to lead the Cards to their 21st. win of the season. Four Cardinals ended up in double figures in the 32-point win. Louisville actually led by 39 in the contest...buoyed by that 32-3 run...at 63-24 halfway through the final half.

The Cards started strong with a surprising starting lineup of Myshia Hines-Allen, Sara Hammond, Mariya Moore, Sherrone Vails and Jude Schimmel. Bria Smith did not see action until eight minutes left in the game...a move by Jeff Walz because of "on the court, off the court issues" by the senior guard.

Nevertheless, the Cards roared out to a 9-0 start in the first three minutes on a Sara Hammond jumper and led 21-5 after Shawnta' Dyer connected inside at the 12:28 mark.

Clemson would cut the Cardinal lead to 31-21 with 2:47 left in the first half...but Louisville would score the final eight points of the first twenty minutes...an Arianna Freeman putback with six seconds remaining gave UofL a 39-21 lead.

The Cards began the second half with the same intensity they ended the first half and held Clemson to just three points in the first ten minutes...roaring out to a 63-24 lead.

It was a 32-3 run and keyed by Dyer, two Hammond threes and Jude getting the first five UofL points to start the second half.

Smith would finally step on the court for Louisville with eight minutes remaining in the game but did not score in the contest.

Clemson would get no closer than 28 the rest of the way and Louisville led 81-46 with 1:32 left after two Emmonnie Henderson free throws. A late Clemson three set the final at 81-49...Louisville outscoring the Tigers 42-28 in the final half.

Besides Dyer's twenty...Moore had 15 points, Sara 12 and Hines-Allen 10. Jude Schimmel added seven points and seven assists and both "E" and Arianna Freeman saw extensive action in both halves.

An expected blowout against a ACC cellar dweller. Louisville had 27 baskets on 21 assists and that speaks volumes. The Cards also out-rebounded the Paws 47-19. Louisville also hit 5-9 from the trifecta arc and was over 70% from the charity line.

Megan Deines sat again with the ankle injury. She's questionable for UNC. Arica Carter saw action but did not score...as the Cards played all nine they brought.

Clemson had neither the height or the physicality to challenge the Cards. Louisville used the game plan that has been successful so many times this season. Get the ball to the bigs, outrun and wear down the opponent and put stifling defense against the stars in the different jerseys.

It gets tougher Sunday for UofL. North Carolina will enter the KFC YUM! Center for a 1 p.m. "Pink" Cancer Awareness game fresh off a six point win over Florida State.

On "sorority night" in Littlejohn Arena...the Cards passed the pledge tests with flying colors and remain in the hunt for the top of the ACC standings. Whatever the issue is with Bria...Louisville prospered without meaningful playing time from her. If the lesson was that the Cards could play well without her 'buying in' and off the court...it was delivered (and hopefully learned) last night.

Smith's absence from the Louisville front court wasn't a factor against the talent-challenged Tigers. Against UNC, the abilities that Smith has exhibited at times just might be needed...but Arianna Freeman did deliver in a back-up role.

Stranger things have happened in the history of UofL WBB...

Defense, Kiesel's injury enable Cards to 48-35 win over Pitt -- Monday Cardinal Couple

Pitt's 21% shooting, Hammond's double-double keys to Cards twentieth win.

Photo by Charlie Springer - UofL Card Game
No...48-35 was not the halftime score.

In a defensive struggle in the KFC YUM! Center Sunday afternoon in front of 13656 fans, Louisville used a 12-2 run in the second half to pull away from the Panthers and get win number 20 on the season.

If high scoring offense is your thing, Denny Crum Court wasn't the place to be Sunday. Neither team had much luck lighting up the scoreboard but the Cards were successful in grinding out a workmanlike win...led by Sara Hammond's 11 points and 13 defensive rebounds.

With Louisville clinging to a 31-26 lead and 10:40 remaining, Pitt's Brianna Kiesel drove to the hoop but was stopped by Emmonnie Henderson...crashing underneath the Pitt basket and drawing a foul...but suffering a left wrist injury and not returning to the game. Aysia Bugg cashed in the two free throws intended for Kiesel and Pitt drew within one on a Yacine Diop jumper 30 seconds later...but the Panthers were missing their floor general and it started to show.

Photo by Charlie Springer - UofL Card Game
Mariya Moore cashed in on two free throws, Henderson scored underneath and Shawnta' Dyer added a couple from the charity stripe to put Louisville ahead 38-32. Sara Hammond connected on a short range jumper and a free throw from Moore and layup from the freshman 30 seconds later culminated a 12-2 UofL run that set the scoreboard at 43-32. It was a six minute run and 2:58 remained in the game.

From there, Louisville was able to outscore the Panthers 5-3...that included a spectacular Jude Schimmel steal and feed to Bria Smith for a layup that set the final score of 48-35.

Trying a lineup change to avert another slow Cardinal start to a contest, Jeff Walz started redshirt senior Sherrone Vails to muscle with the talented Pitt front-liners. Vails gave the Cards four and a half minutes of physical play and scored Louisville's first basket, but was 8-4 Pitt when she went to the bench and Shawnta' Dyer entered the game.

The Cards responded to the lineup change and outscored the Panthers 10-0 over the next 3 1/2 minutes to go up 14-8 after a Myisha Hines-Allen layup, who was in for Sara Hammond. The Cards were able to maintain that lead over the final 12:07...outscoring Pitt 11-10 and holding Pitt's star Kiesel to just two first half points on 1-8 shooting. Jude Schimmel created a daring steal as the half ended and getting a pass to Shawnta' Dyer for a score with two seconds left in the half.

Photo by Charlie Springer - UofL Card Game
With a 25-18 halftime lead, the Cards weren't exactly blowing the Panthers back up the Ohio River, but they actually led at halftime for once...and that was encouraging.

A great halftime ceremony ensued...celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day. UofL's women student-athletes took to the court (minus on-the road Lacrosse and in the locker room WBB squad) to honor UofL administrator Dr. Elaine Wise, who was in attendance and received an award and bouquet of roses. I even managed a quick wave to Field Hockey coach Justine Sowry...lined up on the court with the rest of the participants.

The Panthers weren't going away without a scrap and managed to outscore UofL 10 to 8 over the first ten minutes of the second half before Kiesel left the game.

Shutting down Kiesel and Monica Wignot was the Louisville defensive game plan and it worked. Kiesel ended up with those same two points and Wignot had three in 38 minutes.

Coach Walz expected a tight defensive game, especially after experiencing one a month ago in Pittsburgh...but if you told him prior to the contest that Louisville would win scoring just 49 points, going 0-6 from trifecta line and shooting 31% on the night...e just might have had security usher you out for psychiatric observation.

Sometimes, wins aren't the most prettiest things around and that was the case Sunday against this ACC foe...but Louisville earned it by limiting the Panthers to just 13 baskets in 62 attempts, out-rebounding them 48-44 and scoring 30 points in the paints while holding Pitt to just eight in the paint. The Cards also had 10 assists on 17 made baskets.

Megan Deines did not dress for the game, suffering a ankle injury earlier in the week during practice.

20-3 for the Cards and 8-2 in ACC Conference play. They head to ACC Cellar dweller Clemson next...for a Thursday night game against the 9-15, 1-10 in conference Tigers.

On a day where we celebrated Girls and Women in Sports, it was two of the senior women on the Louisville squad in Hammond and Dyer who made sure the celebration continued for the full 40 minutes.

The annual Alumnae game took place after the post-game player autograph session and the black squad...led by Becky Burke and Dez Byrd squeaked out a hard fought win.

"Big Shot" Becky drilled a few threes in the exhibition and Dez was throwing behind the back passes and displaying her dribble-drive as the black team floor general. We got a few post game comments from an obviously exhausted Dez that we'll play on the Saturday Cardinal Couple Radio Show

Just as amusing was Sherrone Vails, Shawnta Dyer and Myisha Hines-Allen's courtside "play by play" of the action. No worries...Beth Mowins and Deb Antonelli, these three aren't ready to replace you yet...but they provided a decidedly different and hysterically funny approach to a "game call" after wrestling the microphone away from Jared "J-Bone" Stillman.

Kristin Maddox Cox, you need to work on that three...

Also spotted at the game was highly sought-after junior Aislinn Konig. Thanks to Jenny for figuring out who she was for us...

“We were all talking and asking ‘Who have you seen in B.C. history who is better than her?’” asked Brown, the longtime Brookswood head coach of the 5-foot-10 Grade 11 Aislinn Konig. “All we could come up with was that we had never seen Bev Smith play in high school.’”
With a reference point like Smith, the former Salmon Arm and Oregon superstar who is best described as the Larry Bird of Canadian women’s basketball, you might get the idea that Konig is pretty good.
That, however, would be putting things mildly.
Already, according to Konig’s father Frank, over 150 NCAA programs have made personal contact. And as tough as it has been for her, Konig has trimmed her final list of schools down to, in no particular order, Washington, Oregon, North Carolina State, Louisville, Stanford, Southern Cal, Arizona and Kansas, all of whom she will pay unofficial visits to over the coming weeks in order to whittle her list down to a handful in preparation for official visits.

The University of Louisville softball team fell 11-6 to No. 11/13 Washington in their final game of the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic Sunday.

In the game, the Cards (2-3) took the lead twice, but could not overcome a six-run sixth inning by the Huskies (4-1).

Louisville jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Whitney Arion led off the game with a double and came around to score on sophomore Jordan McNary's RBI single.
The Huskies quickly evened the score behind Ali Aguilar's leadoff home run in the home half of the first.

Washington added four more runs in the second. Julia DePonte walked and Dani Braun followed with a hit to set up Kelly Burdick's two-run triple. A single by Taylor Van Zee scored Burdick to give the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

The Cards answered in the top of the third, using five hits to score three runs to make the score 5-4. Freshman Nicole Pufahl led off top of the third with her first career home run. Arion and McNary delivered back-to-back singles to set up Hailey Smith's two-out RBI hit. Dillard's single plated McNary.

Louisville tacked on two more runs in the fifth when McNary led off the frame with a hit and moved to third on a single by Duncan. An error on the play sent McNary to tie the score at 5-5. Another Washington error sent pinch-runner Morgan Meyer home to give the Cards a 6-5 lead.

The Huskies used two hits, three walks and an error to put up a six-spot in the home half of the sixth inning. Kelli Suguro reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a hit by Aguilar. Taylor Van Zee reached on error which sent Suguro home to tie the score at 6-6. Back-to-back walks issued to Kylee Lahners and Kimberlee Souza plated Aguilar to give Washington a 7-6 lead. Courtney Gano's fielder's choice saw Van Zee safe at the plate. DePonte's sacrifice fly and Krystal Aubert's two-run single gave the Huskies an 11-6 lead.

McNary went 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Arion was 3 for 4 with two runs. Pufahl was 2 for 3. Freshman Madi Norman (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits and striking out one with five walks in 4.0 innings of relief. Maryssa Becker surrendered five earned runs on six hits and walked one in 2.0 innings.
