THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS? CARDS WBB READY FOR ACC
A cursory look at the 2014-15 UofL women's basketball roster by an unknowledgeable observer might lead to the conclusion that Jeff Walz didn't have very good recruiting success in 2012 or 2013. Out of the 13 players on Walz's roster, only three have the sophomore or junior class designation by their names. Truth be told, neither Megan Deines, Cortnee Walton nor Emmonnie Henderson have blossomed into Angel McCoughtry or Shoni Schimmel careers...yet...but in the words of the late, great Frank Sinatra...the best is yet to come and won't that be fine?
Today at CARDINAL COUPLE...we'll look at this trio.
Henderson has worked hard in the off-season and now brings a body ready to handle the rigors of a full season of women's college basketball. That braggadocio and self-confidence from the sophomore remains...so we expect the "E" to emerge even further...improving on a freshman season that had it's ups and downs for her. The "whack-a-mole" defense that piled up personal fouls on her faster than Bria Smith on a breakaway at times has hopefully been retired. We hear her across the lane drive and shoot is even better than last year. The lone second year paint player should be an essential part of the UofL inside game.
Word also gets to us that junior Megan Deines has put in the hours and is ready to contend for the title of zone buster beyond the arc. Walz will need a couple of these long ranger bombers to replace the three that have graduated. Deines, who started as a freshman, has the tools...a nice release and follow through. Let's hope she can live up to the Jeff Walz axiom of needing "makers" in his "shooters".
Cortnee Walton has fulfilled the 'role player' scenario quite well over the last two years. With injuries and foul trouble being a constant part of Louisville's inside game the past two years...the junior has been pressed into action at both center and power forward. She's delivered at both for UofL and finds herself a part of the strongest collection of paint players that Jeff Walz has ever assembled at Louisville. How she'll fit into the mix of Vails, Dyer, Hammond, Hines-Allen and Henderson ultimately will depend on how she performs and where Walz needs her...but you can expect this one thing. She will give you 100% for the duration.
This "middle classes" combination from Illinois, Missouri and Arizona hasn't received the accolades and press coverage of the five freshman currently on campus. The 2010 (Shawnta Dyer, Polly Harrington, Shoni Schimmel, Nita Slaughter, Charmaine Tay and Sherrone Vails) class was more highly ranked. The 2011 Class ( Sara Hammond, Jude Schimmel and Bria Smith) has accomplished more than them.
It matters not. The goal of Jeff Walz's basketball teams is to reach and perform well in the NCAA Tournament. That type of achievement requires more than a couple of superstars. It takes 13-14 women's playing together and ready to step in and step up when situations arise.
In Henderson, Walton and Deines...you'll find those qualities and abilities. Skills that Coach Walz will count on and receive in the upcoming season.
