Women Hold Court This Sunday
After a big football win yesterday by the guys, the women take over GoCards calendar today, with all three of our team sports that we cover in action as well as Women's Tennis.
Field Hockey
Field Hockey gets us going with the first start of the day at noon against the Central Michigan Chippewas. The CMU Chippewas made a weekend of it as a number of teams seem to be doing this year, with a Friday game against Bellarmine before today's game against the Cards.
The CMU Chippewas are, how to put this politely, not great. They're sporting a 1-10 record, with only a win over Colgate. You can't fault their ambitions, however, as they have played some impressive teams, including a then #1 ranked Iowa squad.
I wouldn't expect a real "ripsnorter" as Coach Sowry called Friday's game against Wake Forest, but hopefully a nice relaxing Sunday afternoon game that the Cards can have some fun with.
A crisp fall overcast day to keep the sun off of you, if you wanted to check out a Field Hockey game, this would be a good one with free admission at Trager Stadium as always. If you can't make it out, it will be shown on ACC Network Extra.
Women's Soccer
If the Field Hockey game is a blowout, maybe a stroll down Floyd Street to Lynn Stadium will find you a more competitive matchup. Women's Soccer host Syracuse starting at 1pm.
The Orange are 2-9-2 on the season. The wins are against Siena and Binghamton, and the draws with Fairfield and Wake Forest in conference.
Erin Flurey is the go-to goal scorers for the Cuse, putting five in the back of the net this season, and Hannah Pilley is the only other multi-goal scorer for Syracuse, netting two. Shea Vanderbosch will almost certainly be in goal, having played every minute of the season in net so far.
Syracuse hasn't held any team in conference to a single goal or less, so today would be a good day for the Cards to really get their offense in gear.
Soccer will also be on ACC Network Extra for that 1pm first kick.
Volleyball
The wide net Cards have set up camp in the state of North Carolina, with today being the last of the three game sweep through the state.
Duke is the opponent today. After Friday's slow start against UNC, the big question for the Cards will be "Funk or no funk?" While I'm a bit of a fan of Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, I'd really rather this UofL squad be done with their funk for good. We saw a return to form in the latter part of the UNC match Friday, now let's hope it holds.
Duke is not a bad volleyball team. At 11-5, they're not really threatening to break into the national rankings, though you have to think they're not too far off the mark when you look at #16 Minnesota at 6-8 after losing to Maryland and Rutgers this weekend), #22 Kentucky at 6-7, and #24 Ohio State at 6-9.
What's lacking for Duke is much in the way of signature wins. They did get the W early in the season over Creighton, now ranked #15, but beyond that, there's not much. The other big opportunity for a signature win saw them get swept by Pitt.
The Cards can't take the day off, though, for sure, that lose to Pitt was pretty close, with set scores of 25-20, 30-28, 25-22. Watch out for Gracie Johnson, and Kerry Keefe, both closing in on 200 kills in the season. Emma Worthington will be running the offense in the setter position.
Also on ACC Network Extra, with the first serve at 1pm, it's probably a bit late to make the drive to Durham to see this one in person unless you're already there.
Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast
We ended up with a trio on the CCRHP yesterday for a great discussion about the big three fall sports for us. Jared, Paulie, and myself on the klatch.
Check it out if you want to hear about the origin of the term "ripsnorter".
