The Fall Trio in Action
OK, "The Fall Trio" sounds like a seasonal special at Olive Garden, but here we're, of course, talking about Volleyball, Women's Soccer, and Field Hockey. All three of which have competitions today.
Volleyball
We'll start with Volleyball as they were also in action yesterday.
The squad is still hanging out in Columbia, Missouri for the third year (out of four) of the round robin tournament with Missouri, Northern Kentucky, and South Dakota. The match yesterday had a noon start, 11am in Columbia, and saw the Cards take on NKU.
The Norse are a pesky, scrappy team, but ultimately, not too much of a threat to the Cards with UofL taking the win 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.
DBK and the rest of the coaching staff certainly took advantage of the opportunity to try out some different player combinations, playing 14 of the 18 players on the roster.
Aiko Jones led the team with 11 kills on 18 tries for a very nice .500. With a couple of blocks and a trio of digs, that's not a bad day. Anna DeBeer didn't play at the level she frequently does, but that still leaves plenty of room for a solid outing for her. Six kills with only a single miscue, ending up with a 311, is solid play, and if there's a hint of disappointment here, it's only because it's DeBeer and we know she's capable of absolutely taking over a game.
Good contributions in the middle by Cara Cresse and PK, Cresse particularly impressed with six kills on six attempts with no miscues. Elena Scott also officially hit 1.000 for the match, but she only had one attempt. PK tallied five kills, but was also error free for a .455 percentage.
Brigitta Petrenko handled the bulk of the setting duties, totaling 25 assists, but also serving up five aces, and having a hand in a block. Both Alexis Finnvold and Elle Glock did play in the match, but only limited time in one set.
UofL will finish up Mizzou Invitational with a 3:30pm joust with the hosts. While the previous two matches haven't had video coverage, this one can be found on SEC Network + streaming. Basically the same type of setup as ACC Network Extra. With ongoing contract dispute between Spectrum and Disney/ESPN, Spectrum users will need to make other arrangements to watch.
Field Hockey
Coach Sowry's squad got to enjoy the day in Philadelphia yesterday, including at least a visit to the Philadelphia Art Museum and "The Rocky Steps". They did get a practice session in as well on this "off day" between the Princeton match on Friday, and today's bout against Penn.
The only game for Penn so far this season was against North Carolina, and it's a bit difficult to draw too many conclusions from that. UNC was victorious, 4-0, but of course they're the number one team in the country, so what does that tell us about Penn? Not a great deal. Penn only managed to even get three shots off, and only one of those was on frame. Courtney Kenah gave Penn that best opportunity to score.
The game gets underway at 1:30pm, with coverage on ESPN+.
Soccer
And finally, soccer welcomes Central Michigan, the CMU Chippewas, in for an evening tilt, with kick off at 7:30pm on ACC Network Extra.
With the elimination of extra time play in NCAA women's soccer regular season, we expected to see more draws, and CMU certainly demonstrates that. They arrive in Louisville with a 0-0-3 record with games against Detroit Mercy, Wright State, and Cincinnati. And they haven't all been scoreless, the Cincinnati game ended 1-1, and the game against Detroit Mercy was fairly high scoring, 3-3.
Will the UofL offense be able to break through and get on the board? Will the stout defense be able to hold strong and keep CMU to low scores, and hopefully scoreless? We'll find out tonight at Lynn Stadium.
Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast
Case, Jared, Paulie, and myself made the appearance on the podcast yesterday. We think Daryl is off celebrating a friend's wedding? We hope it's something fun like that, in any case.
Good discussions about the Fall Trio, with more than a little bit of concern for soccer, balanced with much excitement for the success, so far, of Field Hockey and Volleyball.
