Cards Fall, Retain 4-Seed -- Weekend Schedule -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Fall but Retain 4-Seed

The happenings at Lynn Stadium did not go well for Louisville women's soccer, but due to a Duke loss to Florida State the Cards finished the season in 4th place in the ACC.

A goal seconds before the conclusion of the first half was the difference as NC State came in and took down the Cards 1-0.

Louisville was without Niamh Nelson, who sat out her one-game suspension.  Maisie Whitsett went down in the second half with a minor knee injury and hopes to be back for postseason.  Callie McKinney went down as well, but her injury appears to be much more severe.  McKinney went down just outside the box and appeared to be in major pain as the trainers ran onto the pitch to assist her.  After several minutes they took her to the locker room only to come out later with the senior in crutches.

Prior to NC State's goal Louisville had a pair of solid looks.  Allison Whitfield found Arianna Ferraro inside the box, but her shot was hauled in by the Wolfpack's keeper.  The other look was when Jessica de Filippo beat the keeper around the outside and had a semi-open net, but her shot went too far outside.

With 56 seconds remaining in the half NC State's Anna Toohey broke a scoreless match.  Toohey, who entered the game a few minutes prior found space in the right side of the box after receiving a pass and shot it past Gabby Kouzelos.

The Cards' offense struggled in the second half as they produced three of their nine overall shots at the western goal.  Five of the nine shots of the night were on target, all saved by NC State.

With Virginia at Boston College getting cancelled due to weather and Florida State taking down Duke 1-0 the ACC Tournament field was set.

The final standings are listed below with the top eight qualifying for the tournament:

1 North Carolina
2 Florida State
3 Virginia
4 Louisville
5 NC State
6 Duke
7 Clemson
8 Notre Dame
9 Virginia Tech

We caught up with an obviously disappointed but very factual and philosophical head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes after the game. Link below

CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR

With Case out-of-town, me working and no response from Daryl -- whose probably working as well, it looks like Jeff and Paulie for the Saturday Morning broadcast of The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour. Paulie will approach a couple of people at today's WBB Tipoff Luncheon and see if he can get anyone else, especially one of the basketball fanatics there, and we'll know how that goes Saturday morning at 11 a.m.on WCHQ 100.9 FM.

You can also catch the broadcast on Facebook Live, live at the station's webiste www.wchqfm.com or download the WCHQ app while you are there.

Happy Friday and Go Cards!

  1. Tough VB loss after looking so good in fourth set.

Paulie and crew, I am stunned by the loss of one of my favorite shows on radio. I hope you guys will continue on in some other vein. My thoughts and condolences to all at WCHQ.

    1. I'm sure we'll squirrel Floyd away before the station shuts down. ;)

We're pretty set on the CCRH continuing in some form. It'll probably be a bit more podcast'ish. At the moment, I'm looking into what it takes to do YouTube live streaming, and so far, it looks remarkably doable.

There will be lots of details to work out. Location to do the show, which I've already got a line in a place; equipment to do it, this location has lost of the equipment we would need; software setup to be able to do the streaming, which is what I am exploring right now.

As much as we've loved being Thereat WCHQ, there are some advantages to moving away from a true radio station setup. We wouldn't be as tied to a one hour long format, we could shorten them up in the summer, but perhaps go longer in seasons when we have a lot more to cover. Multimedia functionality could prove easier to incorporate.

So there's still a lot to decide, but I think I can speak for all of us involved, based on the discussions we've had so far, in saying that the CCRH will live on.

  2. We appreciate the effort by each of you to provide the radio broadcast. I personally vote for its continuation in a format that works best for CC.
