WSOC shuts out SCU 9-0 -- FH opens season -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Welcome back to the weekend, readers.  Holiday weekend at that!

WEEKEND!!!!!!!!

I am closing up our Health Science Campus this afternoon for the time being. It was kind of a nice change of scenery sometimes but I'm looking forward to being on the main campus full time.

Hard to believe just a couple weeks ago we were itching for some Cardinal athletics to talk about and now here we are with a full slate of topics so lets get into it.  Fun Fact, both of the visiting squads from yesterday and today have the Spartans as their mascot

Soccer

Louisville 9 - Upstate South Carolina 0

The kicking Cards have set a new record for goals scored in a single match as they were able to net 9 goals against an opponent.

With a 1-0 lead, the visitors made the move to switch goalkeepers in the 29th minute.   The Cards were able to capitalize just before the halftime break to make it 2-0.  Geigle and Jennings were the scorers.

Amelia Swinarski and AG Gibson both recorded multi-goal games. Swinarski would also add two assists, finishing the night with a team and career-high six points. Mackenzie Geigle recorded her team-leading fourth goal of the season in this game. Emersen Jennings and Swinarski each recorded their first goal of the season. Kiley Peat recorded her first collegiate goal in this game. Liza Suydam would add on to the Cardinals lead with a goal in the 60th minute, assisted by both Swinarski and Nicole Jodoin. Gibson would record her second goal of the afternoon in the 64th minute.

Happy opening weekend of the 2025 season!!

Louisville vs Michigan St.
Friday 8/29 at Trager Stadium
12 pm

We've covered the roster often this summer but a few more notes of accolades for the squad to get you hyped for the season.  Louisville is 10-4 in season-opening games under head coach Justine Sowry.

Izzy Bianco, Lauren Masters and Riley Wollerton were named to the 2025 NFHCA Collegiate Watch List.   Wollerton and Bianco, along with junior forward Lauren Masters, are members of the U.S. Under-21 National Team. The trio recently helped team USA win a silver medal in the Junior Pan American Games in August.

The Cardinals are 7-9 against the Spartans, 3-3 at home winning the last 5 times the two have met.  The last match resulting in a 4-1 win on the road in East Lansing in 2019.

I wish I was on Belknap this week so I could pop over to this one!!!

Make it a great weekend!  There are a lot of opportunities to catch the Cards out on Floyd St this weekend !  Be safe and.....

Cardinal Uniform Pick'ms -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Hello Cardinal fans

Daryl again on a Thursday morning.   I think Jared and Paulie have been working on sharing some new content for us which I believe they will share Friday and I'm looking forward to that...so I gladly traded writing days with Jared.

Looking ahead towards summer months... I was chatting with a coworker earlier this week about some of my favorite uniforms we've seen out of each program over the years so I thought it would be fun to pick some out and also an opportunity to share some of the images captured by our own Jared Anderson over the last school year.

In alphabetical order...  first up,

Field Hockey

The pinks!!!

These uniforms really stand out to me because of the pink accents on the black base of the uniforms.  I don't think we have another program that does the pink out game quite like hockey!

Lacrosse

The classic whites with red accents!

My favorite part of these uniforms is the solid red stripe on the bottoms.   Its a small touch but I think it really stands out and gives the uniforms that extra pop of red it needs.

Softball

The mix-n-match!!!                             Softball has a unique ability to be able to mix and match the pieces of the uniforms and still be able to pull it off.  I do really like the white top and black bottoms with the classic horizontally striped socks.

Volleyball

The red back!!!                               This is a unique look for the volleyball program and I really love the cursive script.  Red is the dominant color but the white block on the front of the uniform really make these stand out among the others.

Women's Basketball

ALL WHITES!!!                                                                                          When it comes to basketball, I love the classics.   I want the all white uniforms with red lettering and that classic Louisville script.   Nothing else compares.   Nothing.  The wing on the leg was added more recently I believe and it was a welcome addition.  I think its a cool feature for a Cardinal look.

Women's Soccer

The reds!!!!!                                                                                                        The soccer program has the ability to put some of the best Cardinal uniforms (kits) out there.  The 'notebook' style top is probably my favorite look from recently.  The thick solid black stripe down the leg also makes a great accent for pictures too and makes the Cardinal athletes look like they're actually flying.  Clever.

I hope everyone is enjoying getting ready for the summer months!   Ill be 33 the next time I check in with ya!!!   EEEK!!!

A special "Thanks" to Jared for the extensive, and excellent work he puts in for the site with his photography and game atendance work.  Believe it or not, he does have a full time job in addition to all the photo-taking he does for the site and he even dabbles in taking pictures of men's sports. A busy guy,

WSOC downs Duke 1-0 -- FH and VB plays today -- ACC BBall Preseason Accolades -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Hello all and welcome back to the weekend!

We are flying towards the holidays it seems and the fall sports schedule is winding down.  The WSOC Cardinals finished up their season last night at Lynn Stadium.  It was kind of warm fall evening, 73 degrees at 7:30pm.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween weekend!  Louisville hosts Duke doubly this weekend with the WSOC squad downing the Dukies last night let's hope that momentum continues as the football program is also in town for a Saturday matchup on the gridiron.

WSOC

UofL 1 - Duke 0

It was an excellent night on the pitch as Emma Hiscock nailed her 2nd game winning goal of the season with the assist from Hayley Howard for a 1-0 win for Louisville win to close out the season. It was a cross kick to the right side of the net right past Duke's Leah Freeman.

It was the first time in program history beating Duke and it also ended the Blue Devil's post season hopes. Heading into the match, the Cardinals were 0-4-5 all-time against Duke.

Despite finishing with 15 shots and 5 corners, the Blue Devils were not able to put one in the net behind Erynn Floyd.  Louisville finished with 6 shots, 2 on goal and zero corners.   Floyd had 2 saves and secured the victory for the Cardinals as the Dukies really pushed to find an equalizer down the stretch to salvage their season.

Duke's Grace Watkins and Kat Rader each finished with 4 shots, Watkins had 2 on goal and as a team, they finished with just about their best opportunity to score all night when a shot crossed in front of the slashing Mia Minestrella, but she realized too late that the shot was definitely theirs to take.  I am glad they didn't  -- it allowed the Louisville squad a victory over a Top 25 squad to end the season.

We will see what the off season brings for this program and likely discuss together this weekend.  Postseason ACC and NCAA Tournaments are out of the picture, personnel changes are a possibility.

Field Hockey

#12 Louisville will take on #13 Boston College Friday at 2 p.m. in Newton, Mass.
It'll be available on the ACCNX

Louisville enters the weekend with a 12-5 record after a pair of losses to #13 Syracuse and Appalachian State. The Cards and the Eagles are tied for fourth in the league with 2-3 records against ACC foes.

Louisville leads the series record 6-5  with BC winning the last meeting on Oct. 28, 2023 4-1 at Trager Stadium.  BC brings an 11-5 overall record and a four-game win streak into the weekend following a 3-2 overtime win against Wake Forest last Friday.
Margo Carlin leads the team and stands third in the ACC with 12 goals and has dished out eight assists for 32 points.  Caroline Kelly carries a 1.27 goals against average and a .765 save percentage.

Volleyball

#4 Cardinals host Florida State Friday at 7 p.m. at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena and it's available on the ACCNX.

Florida State is 15-7 overall and 9-1 in the ACC this season. They registered two home wins over the weekend, with a 3-0  sweep over Boston College (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) on Friday followed by a 3-0 sweep over Syracuse (25-12, 26-24, 25-19) on Sunday. The Seminoles went to five sets but lost to #3 Florida and #11 Georgia Tech at the time.

Outside hitter Audrey Koenig leads the team in kills with 251 on top of 187 digs, while middle blocker Kiari Robey has recorded 176 kills and 87 blocks.
Head coach Chris Poole is in his 16th season at the helm, ranking as the second-winningest active Division I coach. He has guided the Seminoles to the NCAA Tournament in 13 of his 15 seasons, including 11 straight from 2009-2019.

SOFTBALL SCHEDULE CHANGE

The University of Louisville softball team will conclude its fall season with a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) Friday at 7 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium. The fall finale was originally slated for Sunday, but was moved due to rain in the forecast. The event is free and open to the public.

ACC Pre-Season Accolades

Senior Olivia Cochran was named to the Blue Ribbon Panel Preseason All-ACC Team while transfers Jayda Curry and Kiki Jefferson were both named to the Newcomer Watch List.

The Hokies finished with 45 of 61 first-place votes and 1,116 points. Notre Dame, which claimed last season’s ACC regular-season title, finished second with 14 first-place votes and 1,052 points. North Carolina and Louisville each claimed a first-place vote and finished third and fourth, respectively.

FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Hello readers and hello weekend!  It is going to be a great weekend in the Ville with the temperatures going back up (enjoy it while it lasts!)

SOCCER

The Cardinals break the losing streak to the Wolfpack...winning 1-0 on the road Thursday night.

Corrine Dente connected for the game winning goal in the 28th minute, assisted by Morgan Bentley.  Maria Echezarreta, goalkeeper for the Wolfpack, had her work cut out for them, registering 14 saves compared to UofL's Erynn Floyd just saving 2 in the entire match.

First half

In the game's first substitutions, Bentley and Dente both entered the match in the 27:47 minute mark and connected under a minute later to put the Cards ahead for good.   It was Dente's second career goal and first since 2019.  The goal was the 7th shot attempt by the Cards at that point in the match.  The Cards had 11 shots in the first half while NC State had just 3.

Second half

The Cards continued to pressure the Wolfpack registering 13 shots in the second half compared to NC State's two...late in the 49th minute by Leyah Hall-Robinson and then Mia Vaughan in the 67th minute. Neither could get it past Floyd.  In the span of the 70th to 72nd minute, the Cards had 4 shot attempts, two each by Bentley and Karsyn Cherry respectively.

With the win, Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes collected her 200th career win.  The Cards move to 6-6-2 on the season and 3-5 in the ACC.

Since the event is being held at Slugger Field, I have the opportunity to work it so I will definitely be out there to 'work' (but mostly cheer) the celebration for the 2022-23 basketball squads.

I can't wait to see Juniors HVL and Olivia out there vibing with each other and the crowd!  I like that this event is 'touring' the city at different iconic local venues.  I hope the fans show out!

News:  Olivia Cochran is one of 20 watch list candidates for the 2023 Katrina McClain Award. Louisville is one of three teams to have a player named to each of the four positional watch lists so far this season.

Chrislyn Carr was named to the Lieberman Award Watch List, Hailey Van Lith was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List and Morgan Jones was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List.

Sometimes Sports are Good - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Sports Are Good...Sometimes

The UofL vs UK rivalry is...intense.  I don't think that's news to anyone.  The two programs are typically competitive at the top level of several sports (including, of late, my beloved volleyball...but that's not where I'm going with this).  The vibe between the two schools' sports programs cannot have been more different this week, however.

Kentucky fandom has been focused this past week on some discomfort between two of their top coaches, with a contribution from their AD, while Louisville fandom has been on a real positive streak recently, including the unmitigated joyfulness many of us experienced Friday evening watching Women's Soccer get a victory.

I don't want to dump on Kentucky and their programs, there have been times in the past where there has been such acrimony within Louisville's department and fandom.  It wasn't that long ago that we were seeing billboards calling for the return of Tom Jurich, for example.

Instead, I'd like to take a moment of editorializing to encourage fandoms to the positive.  The mission of Cardinal Couple has been to share the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports.  We try, to borrow from Johnny Mercer and The Pied Piper, to "Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive".  I, personally, have found that to be remarkably rewarding.

I spent a beautiful Friday evening among friends, cheering on UofL Women's Soccer to a win.  And, yes, that the team I was cheering for won the game certainly helps.  And I came away with a good vibe that has lifted my spirits since.

Sports "fans", and I use the sarcastic quotes here intentionally, can be toxic.  And that toxicity can spill over into other aspects of people's lives.  I truly don't understand why some people choose to pursue their fandom when all it seemingly does is to engender anger and dread in them.  Life is too short to go around grousing about a team that you supposedly like.

Now, that's not to say critique of a team doesn't have its place.  I've found that my joy in sports grows as I understand more about the sport.  As I've watched more soccer, including Friday evening's event and Lou City FC's win over Tampa Bay last night in front of a club record, and sellout, crowd, I find that I enjoy watching games more and more.  Part of learning about the sports is learning and seeing mistakes and shortcomings.  It's something of a tragic truism in the engineering world, that catastrophic engineering failures (Shuttle Challenger, Kansas City Hyatt Walkway Collapse, Titanic, Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and too many more to name) tend to lead to breakthrough scientific and engineering learning and advancement.  The same is true in sports, you frequently can learn more from failures and losses than you can from successes and wins.

What I hope for is that failures and critiques can be taken objectively, and somewhat dispassionately.  You hear coaches after losses frequently talk about learning from it and then, "tearing off the rear-view mirror".  They don't want the loss to dishearten their team.  There are lessons to be learned, for sure, but accept those, improve from them, and get back on your horse.  In the engineering world, there is a concept of "blameless postmortems".  These are used to learn from a failure and improve an organization's response.  The main tenant of blameless postmortems is, as the name suggests, not to assign blame, but rather to encourage people to speak freely about what happened, how they reacted, and why they reacted the way they did.  The goal is to let them speak freely, knowing that there won't be repercussions if the actions taken were taken in good faith, and to learn how systems can be adjusted to support people in a similar situation in the future to have the information and knowledge to make decisions that will lead to better outcomes.

As Tom Watson, CEO of IBM after the Great Depression, supposedly put it when a salesperson was turning in their resignation after failing to win a much-needed million dollar deal.  "Why would I accept this when I just invested a million dollars in your education?"

Fortunately, the Cardinal Couple community seems to have followed this path quite well.  I see critiques of UofL teams, but they are almost always thoughtful, fair, and backed by evidence and reasoning.  We, the Cardinal Couple Crew, do try to embody this and guide it, but credit does go to you in the community as well for taking those ideas to heart and embodying them as well.

Thank you.

I think we've got an exciting fall sports season ahead of us.  Volleyball is poised to pick up largely where they left off last year, Field Hockey has a good core of players returning, and Women's Soccer is certainly off to a good start.  It's fair to discuss the weak spots in these teams, but let's keep doing it in blameless good faith.  We, as a site, may be small potatoes in the sports media world overall, but I believe we can be a shining example of how sports fandom can work.

WNBA Down to the Wire

Don't look now, but it's the last day for the WNBA regular season and our Cards in the Pros, and it's coming down to the wire.  The Chicago Sky are tied with the Las Vegas Aces in first at 25-10, with the Connecticut Sun looking through a crack in the door at 24-11.

Today's slate of games will be important, and every team is playing today.  Las Vegas has a bit of a challenge against the 4th place Seattle Storm (22-13) on ABC at 3pm.  There are no UofL rooting interests in that one, but based on the standings above, that game will have an impact on what happens at 5pm between the Chicago Sky with Dana Evans and the 7th place, below .500, Phoenix Mercury.  That one is available on Amazon Prime Streaming.

Myisha Hines-Allen, Jaz Jones, and the Washington Mystics in 5th place (21-14) should, let's be honest, have a relatively easy time with the Indiana Fever who are in last place by a rather significant margin.  They'll just need to watch out for that pesky Emily Engstler, of course.  I think you'll be able to catch that one at 3pm on ESPN3, the Indiana Fever Facebook page, and maybe NBC Sports?

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

The Crew were dealt four of a kind with a queen high for the podcast, pretty much guaranteed to be a winning hand, and so it was for the CCRHP.

We had a recap to cover, and there was much rejoicing.  We discussed, with a just a wee little bit of good faith critique, the soccer match against Cincinnati, and took a few minutes to preview the Volleyball Red & Black scrimmage, as well as Field Hockey and their upcoming scrimmage against Miami (OH).

After having all gotten together Friday evening, and then all five of us on the call yesterday, there was a definitely sense of joy and excitement.  Hopefully it can lift your spirits as much as it has mine.

Find it at it's podcast home at:

While we're talking about it, a little peak behind the engineering curtains.  We use a tool called vdo.ninja for our podcast calls and also feeds into our recordings using OBS (Open Broadcaster Server).  It allows us to record each person in their own individual track to adjust and tweak the audio quality.  We take a bit of a belt and suspenders approach to recording as well, with both Case and I recording the call on our separate systems.  That paid off in spades as somehow Case's recording managed to not record his own audio...we're not exactly sure how that happened, but I was able send Case my recording of his voice to splice in to the rest of his recording.  And thus this week's podcast was saved.

WSoc Schedule released -- WBB lands 6'5" grad transfer -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 FRIDAYS WITH DARYL

Welcome to July and the holiday weekend, readers.  We are six weeks away from the opening of the 2022 fall sports seasons.  But who's counting?

Fall sports have released their schedules for the coming seasons as has been repeated on Cardinal Couple all week.  I know the guys are really looking forward to covering another season of matches as we can expect Jeff to dive deeper into the Volleyball schedule and Case to dissect the Soccer schedule and rosters and what we can hope to expect in the fall.

We can finally get some names and dates on our calendars to look forward to.

Women's Soccer

The Cardinals 16-match slate features eight regular season home games and 1 preseason exhibition at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Nine of the sixteen matches are against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last year.

To start, UofL will host a preseason exhibition against Cincinnati on August 12 before the season opener on August 18 against UIC. The Cards will then host reigning Big East regular season champions Xavier a week later on August 25.

UofL will hit the road and travel to Northern Kentucky on August 28 before a neutral site match against 2021 AAC Tournament champions Memphis on Sept. 1 followed by a Labor Day weekend match with James Madison on Sept. 4.

The Cardinals return home to take on Indiana on Sept. 8 and then open ACC play on their home field with Miami on Sept. 17.

Louisville hits the road on Sept. 22 to play reigning national champions Florida State and follows it up with a Sept. 25 stop at Virginia, which won the ACC regular season title last season. The three-match road swing concludes on Oct. 1 at Pitt.

The Cards play the next three matches at home against Clemson (Oct. 6), Boston College (Oct. 9), and Notre Dame (Oct. 15).

The road portion of the regular season schedule concludes with trips to NC State and Duke on Oct. 20 and 23, respectively. Louisville then closes out the regular season by hosting North Carolina on Oct. 27.

Louisville posted a 7-7-2 overall record in 2021 and has won 194 matches during Ferguson-Dayes' tenure.

Women's Basketball

Photo: Coach Jeff Walz' twitter

Coach Walz and staff picked up veteran center, Josie Williams, from Utah Valley State on Thursday, the program announced.  In four seasons with the Wolverines, Williams is one on the top players in school history, finishing in the top 10 in many of the school's statistical categories. Williams closed her tenure at Utah Valley State, sixth in scoring with 1,221 points, third with 783 rebounds and 110 blocks, and second with a 52.1 shooting percentage. Her 7.4 rebounding average per game and 77.6 free throw percentage ranks third in school history.

NORTH CAROLINA WSOC TAKES CARDS 3-1 -- FIELD HOCKEY TODAY -- WALZ --FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 UNC 3 - UofL 1

The #1 in the nation North Carolina Tar Heels used three second half goals to defeat Louisville women's soccer last night in cool, rainy and windy at times conditions in Lynn Stadium last night.

It was the final game of the fall slate for Louisville (4-4 )and they'll now wait and see what happens on Sunday with the rest of the league to see if they'll make the ACC Tournament next week. Currently the Cards have 12 points and several analysts are speculating that 12 is the minimum it'll take to get a squad into fall post-season play.

The first half was a scoreless contest where the squads tried a few shots on each other but no one found the back of the net. An apparent goal by UNC early in the action was disallowed by the officials because the off-sides rule. Louisville actually outshot UNC in the first 45 minutes four to three, but the squad from Chapel Hill had a 4-0 corner kick advantage.

The fireworks happened in the second half and it  was the Cards who set off the first explosion. Taylor Kerwin found Emina Ekic cutting across the box and the Louisville senior planted a shot into the top left of the net to give the Cards the lead. Ekic's celebration slide into a pile of Cardinals on the sideline should be sent to Louisville Softball coach Holly Aprile for spring Softball consideration as a base-stealer....

The lead didn't last long, though. UNC went to work quickly after the Cardinals score and just 25 seconds later, Brianna Pinto found Rachel Jones in front of the Cardinal goal and Jones' shot found success to tie the match.

The Cards couldn't find much of an offensive spark after Ekic's score, while UNC followed up their initial goal with a second one three minutes later when Sam Meza scooted a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos on a corner kick.

The TarHeels would add an insurance goal in the 80th minute of play and keep their record clean at 8-0, 7-0 in ACC play. They'll end the season Sunday when they host Notre Dame. The Irish were idle last night. They have 12 points, like Louisville, and the two squads are tied for fourth place.

The tie-breaker will be based on point-differential on the season, and Louisville looks pretty good there with a +3 differential.

The Cards will be watching Sunday's action intently, though...especially the Virginia Tech vs, Boston College match, Duke vs. Miami match and Notre Dame at UNC. With four schools already qualified for the tournament (UNC with 21 points, FSU with 21 points, Clemson with 15 points and Virginia with 13 points...the Cards could finish anywhere from fifth to ninth in the final fall standings, depending on the Sunday results. The top eight make ACC Tournament play.

( A SPECIAL THANKS TO JARED ANDERSON WHO BRAVED THE ELEMENTS AND GOT THESE GREAT PHOTOS FOR US!)

FIELD HOCKEY AT SYRACUSE

Louisville Field Hockey travels to Syracuse for the final fall season match in the ACC Field Hockey schedule. First pass-back is at 2 p.m. and the match will be available on the ACC Network Extra.

The Cards are 7-0, 5-0 in the ACC standings and have earned a share for the regular season championship. A win over the 3-3 Orange would give the regular season title outright to Louisville.

Syracuse is to be feared, though, they're on a two-game win streak and are 2-2 in ACC "official" play. The Orange have lost at second place UNC and Virginia.

Getting the top seed for the upcoming ACC Tournament is the goal for the Cards today, the #1 seed gets a bye in the quarterfinals and then face the winner of the #4 and #5 seeds in the semifinals...which means they could face Syracuse again, Wake Forest or Virginia.

Good luck to the Cardinal "stick girls" today in the 'Cuse !

WALZ PRESSER

Jeff Walz addressed the media yesterday for about 25 minutes in a teleconference and we learned a great deal about the squad and also that Walz is an "iron man" champion. Although the video feed cut out the Walz discussion on how he bested a bunch of buddies in the two-event "iron man" event last week -- we also have the audio attached where you can hear him talk about his tennis and golfing skills.

Walz reported on the team, as well, and we learned that he's pumped about the squad's depth, competitiveness, play of the incoming freshmen and abilities. Walz feels that all 12 eligible players on the roster could enter the game at any time and there would be no drop off at all in the level of play and success.

The Cards are scheduled to play 25 games in all -- 20 of the ACC contests and five non-conference. They won't face rival UK...the details couldn't be worked out.

We also learned that around 3000 will be allowed in the KFC YUM Center (for now) and he talked about the new student housing facility that will be built across from the Koeber practice facility as well. Good info yesterday from Coach !!
