Mail bag and other ennui...WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LET'S CALL IT FRENCH FRY WEDNESDAY SINCE I'M DOING A LITTLE "KETCHUP"

(Random thoughts, notes and observations for hump day)

I try to respond to the e-mails I get in a timely fashion. Really, I do. Imagine my surprise when I click on the Cardinal Couple e-mail account this early morning and find over twenty that suddenly just appeared overnight in the Inbox...from late November.

Jerry...sometimes, I wonder about Time Warner Cable/ Spectrum...

So...here's a few replies...almost two months later. (I'll let you figure out the original question or comment from the sender...tee, hee.)

-- Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. Yes, it was a good time. --

-- Yes, I hoped that Louisville women's basketball would beat South Carolina too. --

-- No, I don't think Alex Wilharm will be named UofL head volleyball coach (although at the time I wasn't sure). --

-- Yes, I think Jazmine Jones might see some playing time this year. --

-- I, too, can get great rates on auto insurance? Well, just...OMG! OMG! --

Myzilla prepares to hurl Brenna Wise to the hardwood
-- I also thought Chattanooga's Queen Alford did a good job against the Cards and was glad to see Louisville's balanced scoring as well. --

-- No, I don't think a four guard offense would be the way to go against South Carolina. Unless they sit Coates and Wilson for the entire game. --

-- You mean you can actually get me first page listings on Google? No freakin' way dude! --

-- No, I really don't think he is a pompous a$$hole at all. He has his opinion like the rest of us. He just has a larger platform to deliver it from. Yes, I do know him. I don't hang with him or care to...but I know him. --

That's just a few of them. Sonja fields a lot of these for me in her role as CARDINAL COUPLE Director of Operations. ( No, not Sonja Fields...she's a process engineer down in Memphis...and a pretty good one from what I've read.) She clears out the spam, leaves what looks to be relevant and then returns to the Internet to read about rare wildflowers native to Kentucky.

Keep 'em coming...and if you want the whole happy Cardinal Couple family to share in your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, complaints and observations...why not post them in our comments section at the end of articles? We like it when you give us a name or nickname with your entry...but it's not required and you don't have to register with us or sign a loyalty oath to speak your piece.  As always, we're a free site and you don't have to shell out those hard earned rubles to read "premium" content.

If I had a nickle for every time...ah, never mind. Go in Peace.

Message Board? Nah...don't think so.

We get suggestions and comments about starting a message board here at Cardinal Couple. Yes, I'm aware that some other UofL sports-based web-sites have them. No, I don't hang out or "lurk" around these other boards. I have had conversations with other web-site owners and moderators about these boards. There are good and bad aspects about maintaining, moderating and establishing a message board.

Our platform here at Cardinal Couple is Blogger. We're comfortable with the format and ease of doing stuff on Blogger. Blogger doesn't offer a message board layout or gadget. To post on a message board, most sites have the readers register.

We don't feel you need to register to read our site, content or reader comments. We are a non-profit, so charging you for "insider access" is not part of our philosophy. Come and go as you please. You can register with Blogger if you wish, as some of our commentators have done. We're just glad you're here. We "pass the hat" a couple of times a year to cover costs and we have a couple of great corporate sponsors. That gets us by.

We won't be building THE PAULIE TOWER AND TRADE CENTER anytime soon. We won't be adding a message board. And, in the words of Alice Cooper..."if that don't suit ya, that's a drag..."

JUST WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

I have gotten a few e-mails and comments about Case Hoskins...our newest writer here at CARDINAL COUPLE and third voice on THE CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR. These have been very positive communications and we are glad to have him on board with us. Who is he...you might ask?

...Many years ago on the planet Zenox, it was decreed to send an infant child out in a space probe to infiltrate Earthlings and observe their ways and habits. A kindly couple in southwest Jefferson County found this probe in their back yard and decided to raise this young, smiling being as their own...

Seriously, Case is a recent UofL graduate from The Speed School (Engineering). To use a FULL METAL JACKET  movie line...that means they'll send him out to find land-mines. I've had the esteemed pleasure of knowing Case since he was knee-high to a tadpole and watched him grow from a shy but intelligent boy into a full grown man that we can't get to shut up. Great parents, wonderful sister and brother-in-law and cute girlfriend...he is our "third generation" here at CARDINAL COUPLE.

Our "millennial".

Case did the critically acclaimed A View From The Student Section over at CARD CHRONICLE for several years and accepted an invite to write, observe and comment on mostly men's sports for us shortly before his graduation. He's probably still wondering why he agreed to it.

Jenny and Paige know "what the L's up".
Toss in the grumpy old Paulie and the astute but cantankerous Worldwide Jeff McAdams and there you have it...our current starting lineup. We could go further...we still get contributions from that kindly old man David Watson (our fourth generation) and Jenny O'Bryan...both who've been with us since near the beginning. Jared Anderson, Paige Sherrard and Sam Draut have been known to join us on our radio broadcasts and it's always nice to have intelligence in the studio. Sonja doesn't write anymore...leading back to the jambalaya incident, we suspect...but handles operations. Anyone need a gall bladder removed? She's your girl...

Four generations. We're currently accepting applications for a talented five-year-old columnist to bump that to five generations. From Tommy Dorsey to Avenged Sevenfold...in musical parlance.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FUTURE...

Acid raid, trade embargoes, higher prices at the pump and more dialogue about the Trump Presidency.

Here at the web-site, though, we've got all kinds of fun planned for you, Campers!

We'll stay the course with UofL WBB. We hope to still be reporting game results and progress well into April in that sport. We'll be filtering in softball and lacrosse very soon...Paulie is already petitioning and pestering the assistant Sports Information Directors on campus for interviews with Sandy Pearsall and Kellie Young. We'll follow rowing and keep you up on track and field, golf, tennis, swimming and all the other sports activities on campus. Case will continue tracking the guys and we'll try to indoctrinate him into a few more women's sports as well...he did a fine job on covering women's soccer in the fall. I think Worldwide and I can convert him into a lacrosse fanatic like us without much prodding.

We invite you to continue to tell what you want, like, don't like and expect here at the site and radio. You can always e-mail us...once it gets past the staff chimps and Sonja...there's a good chance I'll see it, too...within a couple of months. Comments on any articles here are always welcome. Shoot, you can even send us stuff through the United State Postal Service as well, if you get the hankering to do so. WE'RE STILL ACCEPTING 2017 DONATIONS ALSO. As we love to say...YOU are Cardinal Couple...and we never forget that. It's the driving force that gets me up at absolutely obscene hours of the morning sometimes to track down a stat, quote, score, idea or do a column. It ain't easy being Paulie sometimes....

Have a great Wednesday and we'll be back tomorrow to take an in-depth look at UofL WBB's next foe...the Florida State Seminoles. (As far as we know...)

TODAY'S ROWING 101 LESSON:

( Thanks to the UofL rowing team's Twitter account for this. We all should strive to learn a little more about rowing, right? )

  1. Paulie, maybe this is a good time/place to solicit ideas from the readers on what they would like to read/hear about during the doldrums of the summer months. You know, that period between the end of softball and the start of volleyball, etc. Wouldn't it be fun to have a guest article from Angel (since she is not playing WNBA this summer) about playing overseas and/or the WNBA or just life in general?

    1. An excellent idea, Vivian. I'll start a notepad with "Ideas for the summer" and that will be the first entry. I also need to catch up with Asia Taylor. Whether they'll do them or nor remains to be seen, but there's no harm in asking. Good though this morning!

  2. Thanks for mentioning the old guy here in your article this morning Paulie. I'm having a good morning so far here in Florida. I successfully found my car keys, got the cat outside and poured milk on my cereal. Sometimes I get that mixed up and a milk-covered cat is no fun for anyone. Nor is a bowl of cereal on the back yard deck. I'm thinking of driving up to FSU for the game tomorrow. I already have my tickets for the Cards vs. USF on the 22nd. The Bulls got gored by UConn last night. Joe Hill and I will sit together for the Cards v. Bulls. That should keep campus security busy for awhile. Now, if I could only remember which web site I'm posting this to --

    1. Mas fina, Dave-O! If you get up to Tallahassee...shoot me an e-mail about the game. Or, do an article if you want.

Joe Hill and you together anyplace but a deserted golf course is a bad idea. Kinda like giving Foster Brooks and Dean Martin the keys to the liquor cabinet. Remember, guys...no one wants to see you in your speedos.

  3. I'm driving. Dave has been restricted to golf carts and hover-rounds by the Tampa Police Department. Nice write up today, Paulie. Man, that Paige is a pretty one, isn't she?

Go Cards! I won't be at the FSU game. Bunco night at the Community Center.

    1. You'll have to excuse Dave this morning. He took a self-inflicted sand wedge wound to the skull trying to chip out of the trap on hole 17 at Putt-Putt.

    2. At least I didn't add bourbon and ice to the water hazard on #13 and drink it dry.

  5. Boys, boys...Cease. You're killing me here. Don't make me send the activities director down there to the rec room...

Joe, I'm very proud of both Paige and Jenny for their commitments to better health over the last year and still ongoing. Two very nice gals who are passionate about UofL sports. Honored to know them and always a pleasure to see them.

  6. I can just imagine a car with Paulie, Joe and David in it. Suitable as a remake of The Three Stooges. I, for one, will welcome knowledge about rowing. I just wish they could find a place for home meets.

  7. Good Afternoon paulie question who the strongest power forward in Louisville wbb history.

    1. I would probably have to go with Myisha...although some might make an argument for Asia Taylor, Monique Reid or Candyce Bingham...in recent Cardinal WBB history. Going back further...Valerie Owens Combs, Kristin Mattox would be in the running. . Lori Nero and Jackie Spencer weren't bad.

      I'll say Myisha.

  8. Cards are going to have big trouble at FSU. Wright, Romero, Slaughter, Brown, White, Thomas. They got a lot of options. How does Louisville beat someone like this? They nearly beat UConn.

    1. I think you try and shut down Romero and maybe make players take shots out of their comfort zone. You definitely have to rebound well and if the Cards can jump out to the quick start like they did last year, it could take what is expected to be a pretty big crowd out of it.

  9. Paulie,
Good choices for strongest PF, but Jackie Spencer was a guard. With Stephanie Edwards, two of the quickest to ever play at Louisville!

  10. This game will be good for the cards.I still think cards have a deeper bench.
If BJ hits her open shots look out.
