Louisville women's basketball...#8 Cards face Jackrabbits tonite at KFC YUM -- Wednesday CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE WBB GOES RABBIT-HUNTING

The University of Louisville women's basketball squad faces their second opponent in an eight-day stretch and final contest of the killer five-game sequence by facing another probable NCAA Tournament team in South Dakota State tonight in the KFC YUM! Center at 7 p.m.

South Dakota State enters the Bucket to face the Cards with an identical 8-2 record as Louisville. They recently dropped out of both the major polls but are ranked #1 in COLLEGE INSIDERS MID-MAJOR poll. The Jackrabbits did suffer a knee injury to their leading scorer Macy Miller (14.9 ppg) against Green Bay on Dec. 9th...and she is not listed as one of the probable starters...but they do bring in a squad that does have three guards (Madison Guebert 13.7, Ellie Thompson 11.0 and Kerri Young 10.2) in double figures.

As the name implies, the Jackrabbits like to get out and run on offense. They've outscored their opponents 70.5 to 57.5 so far this year and did defeat George Washington 60-55 in their last outing. S.D. State also owns wins over Iowa and Creighton this season. Their losses have come to #13 Oklahoma and Green Bay.

Guebert looks to be their major threat from the deep...she averages 48% (32-67) from three-point range. 6'2" senior center Clarissa Ober leads the school from Brookings, SD in rebounds with 8.1 a game. Despite the smallish size of their roster, the Jackrabbits do out-rebound their opponents by almost three grabs per game.

Louisville will look to continue the hot hand of Myisha Hines-Allen against the Jackrabbits. The Montclair, NJ junior went for 26 against Kentucky and added 16 vs. WKU. She is shooting 59% (20-34) in the last two games. The Cards will also look to leading scorer Asia Durr (18.2) who is second in the nation with 39 three-pointers and Mariya Moore (11.8). Senior guard Briahanna Jackson and Moore have 13 assists over the last two contests (Jackson 26 over the last three games) and Cortnee Walton had 18 rebounds in the games against the Toppers and Cats.

This is the first match-up ever between the two schools. Louisville needs to avoid the slow starts that have made the last two games come-from-behind efforts to get the wins and the Cards are seeking consistency for 40 minutes.

We'd like to see a stretch of Sydney Zambrotta zoning in from three-point range if it works out...as well as the overall razzle-dazzle and sparkle of Jazmine Jones. Missing from playing time recently has been Sam Fuehring and could the entire squad will get some court time in what we hope will be a blow-out.

Be careful what you wish for, right?

How deep Walz goes into the bench is anyone's guess...he bases a lot of that on how practice has gone for the week. Regardless if he plays five or fifteen, though...it should be a fun time down by the river tonight. If you can't make the trek...ACC Network Extra will have the feed and Cards Radio 790 the audio.

  1. HELLO PAULIE and all, From Larue CO. Took a little road trip tonight to
Mercer CO. to see Seygan Robins play. Her mother set with us for two
quarters and had a nice chat. also meet her Dad and Coach. All very nice
    folks.

Seygan looked better than I had plan to see for a JR. Fast on the break
made no diff if she was just running on the break or handling the ball on
the break, most of the time she was handling the ball.

Can hit the three ball and made her layups.

Three things stood out as well. (1) passing in open court and sets really
see's the court well. (2) Very vocal getting player's in place's they need
to be both on "O" and "D" and gets after it on defense. (3) High energy
    motor.

Because of the score she only played two quarters. It was a blow out for
Mercer. Meet her after the game seem like a very nice and polite young
lady. Her Mother told me the better the computation the better she plays.
Seygan had told her mother she had mixed emotions about the game because
the coach on both teams were her Uncle.

The Cards have a keeper with her.

    1. Thanks for the report, pal! I haven't met her Mom yet but I know Coach Souder is a class act and a fun guy to talk to. We've had him on radio and plan to do so again as the season goes on (if he'll join us again).

    1. And the mind of Worldwide works in weird and mysterious ways. Every time I see this name, I think about Queen Latifah (hip-hop artist, actor of stage and screen, Covergirl spokesmodel, you name it)...her real name is Dana Owens (and she has an album entitled The Dana Owens Album...of jazz and standards vocal covers...a woman of many talents, she is).

So, Dana Evans -> Dana Owens -> Queen Latifah.

It's a scary place in here sometimes.

    2. Interesting, indeed. Since I'm a tad older, I sometimes think of Dale Evans...who was Roy Rogers wife in many Westerns. Not sure how well Dana Evans can ride and rope...but there seems to be little doubt that she can shoot!!!

Dana Evans -> Dale Evans -> Pulls theTrigger (Roy's horse's name) on another Fastbreak

    1. I spent some time in College in South Dakota. Some of those "corn fed midwestern white chicks" are the best people ever. They also can ball. SDSU is #3 nationally this week in the mid major poll. Talking about skin color in this context is not a door you want to open.

Reminds me of an old Mark Twain quote. "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"

    2. Yeah, I'm not in agreement with the term or phrasing that "anonymous" used either, Burn. Not having Miller may substantially hurt SDSU tonight...they did manage to get by George Washington without her by five...she wasn't listed as a probable starter...whether she players or not we'll have to see.

  4. Sorry to hear that SDSU's Miller got hurt and is going to be out for the game. The unfortunate curse of knee injuries in WBB strikes again. In that context the Cards should handle them fairly easily. Had Miller been healthy and in the lineup it would have been a good game. SDSU is a top top mid major and assuming that Miller can come back this year they'll certainly be a tourney team.

  5. I would like to know why Sam Fuehring has not played? What's going on with that?

    1. Coaches decision in the last two games. The word I got was that she was late to a players-only film session before the UK game and the team voted that she not dress against UK. The coaches backed the players' decision. She was dressed and on the bench for WKU, why she was not entered in the game...that I do not know. We'll see about tonight. It *might* be a good question for Coach if she doesn't play tonight...but not sure if I want to ask it or not...

    2. Wear body armor, riot helmet and shout it on the way out of the door if you door, Paulie. That might not even save you.
