Making the grade -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Now that the UofL women's fall sports squads are well into their schedules and conference play has started in three of the sports...let's take a little Sunday look at how well Louisville Field Hockey, women's Soccer, Volleyball and women's golf are doing...

FIELD HOCKEY

At 8-1 and facing a Liberty opponent today that they should handle with ease...Justine Sowry's teams gets an "A". Their only loss is to a very good Virginia/ACC team. The Cards beat the #1 team in the rankings....North Carolina. They have a 14 game winning streak at the Trager. Impressive.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Now 4-5 and facing Miami on the road today, I'm giving the kicking Cards a C-. #5 FSU demolished them 6-0 in a game where it was 1-0 at the half. Youth galore on this squad that starts six freshmen. Good freshmen...but still learning. Wins over Ole Miss and Syracuse don't cancel out losses to Morehead, UK or Miami (OH). ACC Soccer could be very unkind to Karen Ferguson Dayes' babes on the pitch.

VOLLEYBALL

With a 8-5 record and game today against Ga. Tech...Anne Kordes' Wide Netters have performed about average, so they get a "C". Passing woes and inconsistent middle play have plagued this young squad and despite inspired play from Katie George, Janelle Jenkins and Maya McClendon...UofL Volleyball will be hard-pressed to achieve a .500 record in the talent rich ACC.

GOLF

The "chip and putt" Cards have taken part in 3 tournaments and have two first place finishes and a fifth. They'll see the cream of the crop in the upcoming TarHeel Invitational and we'll see how Emily Haas, Katie Petrino and their eight teammates fare against the powerful ACC fivesomes. I'll give them a "B" so far...a strong finish in Chapel Hill would solidify that grade.
