- AAC action against the Bulls today

- Swimming dominates Houston and Cincy

- Molodynia wins women's mile

Louisville WBB faces the USF Bulls in conference action today at the SunDome in Tampa. Game time is 3 p.m. and
it will be televised on ESPNU. CARDS radio 790 AM will also have the call.

On the "unfinished business" ledger for Jeff Walz's team is payback for the beating USF administered to the Cards last season in the KFC YUM! Center. Gone from the Bulls team are the Smith sisters...who have graduated. Here's a glimpse into the upcoming event from a USF perspective:

“We’re going to play one of the better teams in the country and it’s a great opportunity for our kids,” head coach Jose Fernandez said. “They’re not going to take us lightly.”

Sunday’s matchup will be a must-see after what transpired between the programs last season. Louisville was ranked No. 12 in the country when it erased a nine-point deficit in the final 12:09 and defeated the Bulls, 78-75, at the Sun Dome on Jan. 30, 2013. The Bulls got revenge less than a month later when Inga Orekhova scaored 13 points and Akila McDonald grabbed 10 rebounds in a 73-62 win over the Cardinals at the KFC Yum! Center.

“We beat them at their place last year and they hit two threes in the last minute to beat us here,” Fernandez said. “(Head coach) Jeff Walz is going to be ready for our players. We’re going to have to defend Shoni Schimmel, one of the best players in the country, and do a good job with Bria Smith.”

Schimmel, 5-foot-9 senior guard, was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after scoring 21 points in a 64-45 win over Cincinnati on Saturday that marked Louisville’s eighth consecutive victory. Schimmel is the team’s leading scorer at 16.4 points per game, and Smith and Sara Hammond are each averaging 10 points for the 15-1 Cardinals.

“They have a lot of nice pieces to their team and there is a reason why they’re No. 5 in the country,” Fernandez said. “It should be a great game. We’re going to really have to defend the arc. We’re going to defend like we’ve defended the last two games, not giving up dribble penetration and doing a great job on the glass.”

It will not be an easy task for the #5 Cards today. Inga Orekhova is back and playing well. Coutrney Williams is dangerous. Jenkins can be a game-changer.

CARDINAL COUPLE'S Jenny O'Bryan will have the write-up on the result in the Monday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.

#13 Louisville women's swimming dominated Houston and UC in action at the Ralph Wright Natorium yesterday. CARDINAL COUPLE columnist Jeff McAdams texted me from the event with the following tongue-in-cheek remark:

This appears to be effectively an intrasquad competition

And...the Cards did dominate...defeating Houston 210-85 and Cincy 211-84.

Arthur Albiero was pleased:

" The challenge for today was to race the way we want to race at championship time...a championship rehearsal. We have great respect for Cincinnati and Houston, but today was about us, the whole season has been about us trying to get better each and every time and help our freshmen continue to make strides. I am very pleased with them. I go back to the leadership of our upperclassmen and the job they've done leading the way and it shows."

Leaders yesterday were:

- THE 400 MEDLEY RELAY TEAM ( KRISSIE BRANDENBURG, ANDREA COTTRELL, KELSI WORRELL AND BREANN MCDOWELL) WHO WON EASILY.

- ABIGAIL CHIN AND ABIGAIL HOUCK WHO FINISHED 1-2 IN THE 1650 FREE.

- SWEEPING THE 100 BACK WITH MACKENZIE BUSS, KRISSIE BRANDENBURG AND ERICA BELCHER.

- COTTRELL AND LUCY KRAMER ATOP IN THE 100 BREAST

- WORRELL WINNING THE 200 FLY, 100 FREE

- SWEEPING THE 200 BREAST...TANJA KYLLIAINEN FINISHING FIRST

- HOUCK WINNING THE 500 FREE

- UOFL SWEEPING THE 1OO FLY...BRITTANY ROBINSON TOUCHING FIRST

- KYLLIAINEN TAKING THE 400 IM BY 10 SECONDS OVER CHIN. 10 SECONDS IS AN ETERNITY IN SWIMMING AND THE 4:17:94 IS AN NCAA B-CUT.

Michelle Molodynia led the Louisville distance runners in competition at the Gene Edmonds Cup in West Lafayette, IN yesterday. She won the mile in an impressive 5:11:83. Louisville finished 1-2-3-4-5 in the event. Chelsea Bingham won the pole vault and Maggie Gilbertson took the high jump.

In weight throws, the Cards got a second place finish from Patrice Gates and third place toss from Rachel Serafin...each throwing personal bests.

Benadette Cheruiyot won the 3000m for UofL.

    1. Wow. That's a huge deal. She was preseason all conference and averaging almost 18 ppg. Wonder what the back story is on that.
