Is Swimming & Diving the Most Up and Coming Program?

The last decade has seen the emergence of a number of UofL athletics programs onto the national scenes of their sport.

Women's basketball has been on the rise under Jeff Walz's tenure on campus. It wasn't in all that bad shape before Walz...Tom Collen was getting to the NCAA Tournament, but was stepped on the accelerator and WBB took off. 

Lacrosse didn't exist as a competing team a decade ago, and already this team is achieving national rankings, appearances in the NCAA tournament, and signature victories over top national powers. 

Field Hockey has a much longer history at UofL, but has been on a similar trajectory of late. Pam Bustin left the program in good shape for Justine Sowry and our recent USA citizen has grown it into a top ten contender each year. 

But is everyone chasing the taillights of Swimming & Diving right now?  I believe so.  

The big story (on the women's side, at least) has been Kelsi Worrell, but she's not been alone in visibility on the big stages of swimming and diving.  We mentioned Alina Kendzior, a rising sophomore, during The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour this weekend, for setting two national records for Estonia in the 100m and 50m backstroke events.

Mallory Comerford, also entering her sophomore year, has been making waves in the butterfly, looking to follow in Worrell's footsteps to become Louisville's Fly specialist.

Andrea Kneppers just graduated, but also took great strides in achieving success for The Cards and is still swimming well for The Netherlands while, across the North and Baltic Seas, Tanja Kylliainnen looks to be making an Olympics appearance for Finland.

Other names to keep an eye on for the future of UofL swimming are Sophie Cattermole, Andrea Cottrell, Paige Ezell, and Abigail Houck..

Let's not forget that the sport includes Diving as well, and Andrea Acquista made the NCAA championship event this past year.  With the hiring, a couple of years ago, of KZ Li as Head Diving Coach, the Diving side of this team looks to take some major steps forward as well.

Is Swimming and Diving the most up and coming program at UofL?  I think so, some programs are more advanced at this point, but the upward rise of the Swimming and Diving squad appears to be more rapid, at this point, than any of the others.  Arthur Albiero has already built a strong (and very international!) program, and is looking for more success in the future.  Cardinal Couple will be watching and providing the best coverage we can.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY! -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THREE CARDINAL DADS

Happy Fathers Day to all the Cardinal Couple reader dads out there! On this day, I do think of my father..as I'm sure most of our readers think of their Dad's.

My dad was a hard working, honest and strict disciplinarian kind of guy. 25 years in the Navy and ten in the reserves will do that to a person. He taught his sons that results came from hard work and that with success you also displayed humility. In his latter years, after retirement, he still stayed quite active...playing golf until he was 85, walking each day with his beloved pal Bobbie the Yorkie and puttering about in the garage and yard. 

Thank you, Sarge. (Even though he was in the Navy, the boys at the golf course renamed him "Sarge" because of his way of barking out orders when he worked the counter or concession stand after his retirement). Because of you, I learned early on that there is accountability for actions and being honest to oneself and others was just as important as the friendships one accumulates. 

Let's also not forget three UofL dads who have an important role in the shaping of not only their student-athletes but their own children. Certainly all the UofL dads deserve recognition...we'll look at three that are pretty recognizable and remarkable. 

Jeff Walz is the proud father of four children. Family is very important to him...something I would imagine he picked up from his dad and father...both still alive. He's made a point to include his children in his job activities and appearances as well. We've seen Lola at the podium with him after games and co-hosting his weekly radio show. Thank you for being a dutiful, concerned and caring dad, Coach. Lord knows where you find the hours to do it...

Sam Purcell is one of Jeff Walz's assistant coaches. He's also a father...with three children. It was during the NCAA Selection Show earlier this year that it was revealed that he and radio personality Howie Lindsey were both about to become fathers again...perhaps even on the same day...and you could see the genuine pride and happiness in each man's face. Sam Purcell is a non-stop, endless source of energy and enthusiasm. That certainly translates well in the role of being a father. Keep on groovin', Sam! 

Tom Jurich is the athletic director at the University of Louisville. He's also a dad with four children. Women's sports fans at UofL will remember twin daughters Haley and Lacey from Field Hockey. Mark was a great Baseball Cardinal and is now senior associate athletic director for development at UofL. Son Brian is an administrator for Norton Healtcare. Like their dad, the Jurich kids exude confidence and dedication to the task at hand. A lot of readers probably don't remember who was athletic director before Tom. No one who follows UofL sports will ever forget Mr. Jurich. Happy Father's Day, Tom. In Tom, we trust. 

Yes, there is a day dedicated to Dads. Phone calls will be made, barbecues or dining out may happen and remembrances of fathers that are gone will occupy thoughts. 

A father, though, is a father seven days a week, 365 days a year...from the first time he holds his child in his arms until his children gather around him to say their final goodbyes. Some say it's the toughest job you'll ever love and the utmost responsibility you can ever imagine...to have those little eyes look up at you and call you "Daddy."

In my youth, I sometimes did not understand why my father did the things he did. When I did "get it" later in life, I marveled at the wisdom he had, the constraint he showed and the role he fulfilled.

If you had a dad that wasn't all that great, hopefully the experience will inspire you to be a better parent. 

If you are a father, be a shining example of the role you have.

President Ramsey offers resignation/retirement to Governor -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

PRESIDENT RAMSEY A HUGE SUPPORTER OF UOFL WOMEN'S SPORTS

When the news broke yesterday that UofL President James Ramsey had offered his resignation/retirement to Kntucky governor Matt Bevin...after Bevin had disbanded the board of trustees at UofL...my first thoughts went to the James Ramsey I got to know over the many years at Louisville and before.

You see, the Ramsey's lived around the block from me when I was a kid. They never minded you running through their front yard. James is several years older than I, so us kids didn't see much of him...but his mom would always buy Scout-O-Rama tickets from the assortment of Cub Scouts that would make the trek to the front door. Later on in his life, the Boy Scouts would award him the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. 

James was a Fern Creeker back in those days. Went to Fern Creek High School with my older brother. Later on, he would be enshrined in the Fern Creek Hall of Fame. Some of the times I've spoken with him, he'd reflect on Fern Creek Road and the neighbors back in those days...almost wistfully. Those good ol' days in a sleepy suburb of Louisville. Fern Creek. One stop-light, two drugstores and a feed and hardware store. 

They say you can never go home again...but he never really left the hearts and minds of many Fern Creekers. You could point to him and say with pride...'that's one of our guys'. 

Local.

Dr. Ramsey is also a huge UofL women's sports fan. I picture him at Ulmer Stadium, there with Jane, his wife. Sitting in the bleachers...always ready to cheer. Willing to turn his ballcap into 'rally mode' if needed. You could find them in the KFC YUM! Center (and before that in Freedom Hall) sitting near half-court. Cheering on Angel, Tia, Shoni...Sara.

Sports weren't the reason that Ramsey has offered to sit down and the sports program will not suffer without him.... with Tom Jurich sitting in that A.D. chair. But...one of the women's sports program's biggest fans would be greatly missed and I hope he and Jane still attend games and events. 

If that happens...

Ramsey's resignation/retirement offer could be turned down. Probably unlikely, but a possibility. Yes, the words 'dysfunctional', 'an academic nightmare', 'situation out of control', 'golden parachutes', and 'non-disclosure agreements' were symptomatic with the Ramsey reign over the past 3-4 years...but when you take a look at the whole body of work during President Jim Ramsey's time at Louisville the good things that were accomplished while he was president far out-weight the questionable and disgruntling. 

Yeah, the sombreros were a mistake. The new center of Academics coming to Floyd Street is not. The growth of the UofL Campus in his 14 years is evident. 

Some media will bash James Ramsey. And Matt Bevin. I'll just be content with remembering the James Ramsey I knew from softball banquets and chats in the KFC YUM! Center hallway. I'll wonder if Bevin actually has the authority to fire an entire board of trustees. And watch the legal and political circus take over center stage. 

James Ramsey supported UofL women's sports. That's good enough for me...he gave Tom Jurich full reign and said...'give it your best'. And, to paraphrase an old song...written by Hazel Miller back in 1982..."look what we can do Louisville."

Justine Sowry Interview -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FIELD HOCKEY PREPARING FOR THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

I had the great opportunity to sit down with Louisville Field Hockey head coach Justine Sowry yesterday to catch up on things with her and the program. The entire interview will play on our Saturday morning CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR...which begins at 11 a.m. 

Here are some of the highlights: 

-- On Camps:

" It's the summer season and with Field Hockey we have had a lot of young kids on campus, teaching them the ropes and the skills of Field Hockey. We just finished our second week of our 'kiddies' skills camp. The numbers are growing...we had over a hundred at each camp. We had a really great time and our staff had really great energy with these kids." 

-- On The Five Players selected for the USA Young Women's Championships: 

"I am really proud and two of the rising seniors in Shannon Sloss and Erin McCrudden...they've been doing it every year since they've been here at UofL. It's really going to help them with their leadership skills and bringing back to our program for this year. The other three are getting a taste of it as well. Nicole Woods just got back from winning a silver medal in the Pan American Games. Taylor Stone just got back from a USA U 19 tour and has aspirations to move up to the next age level group."

-- Ayeshia McFerran:

"She had an outstanding freshman year...becoming our first freshman ever to earn All-American honors. She'll be getting her banner up on the wall along with Victoria Stratton this fall. Ayeshia has continued to be involved and we're working with the Irish Federation Field Hockey Association...so she's able to do both right now. She had a really successful tour in a tournament in New Zealand. She did great! It went to one-on-one penalty shootouts multiple times...and it turned out well. She's got her summer planned with international hockey and is on track to being a long term international star." 

-- The season ahead:

"Being part of the ACC, the best conference, it's always going to be challenging. When we look at the average RPI of the conferences...the average for the ACC is 5.5 and the next strongest is the Big 10...which was something like 26 or 27, so we're crushing the other conferences. We've also got teams like Michigan and Northwestern back on the schedule...teams that are top 10 in the nation. It's a schedule that is stronger than it was last year, incredibly challenging...but this is where we want to be." 

-- On Acdemics:

"We recently had the best semester academically in the five and one half years I've been here. They're great, incredible all-around student-athletes.

Hello, campers! -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

JUNE AND JULY HUGE CAMP MONTHS FOR LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S SPORTS PROGRAMS

There probably aren't any scary ghost stories by a campfire, arts and crafts sessions, saluting the camp directors shorts or smores...but there's a lot of camps going on this month for the Louisville women's sports programs. Here's some of the action: 

LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Hoops Cards have already had an Elite Skills Camps on June 11th and there is currently a Day Camp for Grades 3-8 that is winding up today at the Student Athletic Center. LACROSSE

Kellie Young's Louisville lacrosse camps will be held in July. There are Developmental (ages 7-13) and Elite (grades 6-12) planned at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium. We haven't seen anything on the tongue-in-cheek, proposed 'Old and In the Way' Camp for 55+ yet...Coach is probably trying to line up AARP, a hearing aid company and eye-wear organization for sponsorships.  More information on these July camp can be perused at:

Dana Evans...Top 2017 WBB guard...visits Louisville -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

EVANS RANKED 2017 #1 PG and #3 OVERALL PLAYER BY PROSPECTS NATION

Dana Evans...who is ranked as the top 2017 point guard and #3 overall by Prospects Nation visited the UofL campus yesterday...and by all accounts, the visit went very well.

We'll give her a break on the spelling of Louisville... we've all mis-spelled stuff on tweets and I have to proof-read and spell check our daily columns several times...plenty of time to get that worked out...Ms Evans.
The fact that the Cards WBB program is in the running for the 5'6", five-star point guard out of Gary, IN is the story here.

She led the state of Indiana in scoring last season and was also a participant for the USA U-18 women's basketball team tryouts last month.

Baylor, DePaul, Marquette, Indiana, Purdue, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and West Virginia are all listed on her list currently...along with Louisville.

Her stock is on the rise...having moved up six spots to #3 in the latest Prospects Nation poll. Words such as leader, distributor, scorer and team player are used to describe the Chicago Times Girls Player of the Year. Her 35.8 points per game, 5.0 assists and 5.3 steals a contest would back those descriptions up.

No clear favorite is being touted by Evans yet...there are still visits to make and places to see...but there is definitely room at Louisville for a top-flight point guard in the 2017 class. Cards WBB fans have commented that the point was a weakness for Louisville in the 2015-16 season and despite the additions of Sydney Zambrotta and Taylor Johnson to the roster, along with returnees Asia Durr and Arica Carter, the philosophy is that you go after over-the-top skilled point guards when you have the chance.

Evans looks to be one of those.

The Chicago Sun-Times reveals more interesting information on Evans...who reportedly will trim her list to five schools in mid-to-late June:

West Side coach Rod Fisher said he discusses the recruiting process with Evans when he's asked.

"I'm not going to try and persuade her to go where I think she should go, or anything like that, because the decision is completely up to her,'' he said.

"Wherever she goes, she's going to make an impact on the program — an immediate impact.''

Evans plans to give programs a long, hard look before making her decision.

"I want to go a school where I love it, am comfortable and feel like I'm at home,'' she said. "I want to make sure I really like the players and make sure they like me for who I am, and not just as a basketball player.''

Evans indicated coaching stability will be another factor.

That wouldn't seem to be a problem at Louisville...where Jeff Walz is as solid a fixture on the Louisville campus as The Thinker statue peering out over the lawn bordering Third Street.

Kelsi Worrell...smooth water ahead -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

JERSEY NATIVE READY FOR OMAHA

This time of year...many UofL fans think of college baseball when Omaha is mentioned. Due to the unforeseen elimination of Cardinal baseball in the Super Regionals...Omaha has a alternate meaning now...it is the site of the Olympic Swimming trials from June 26-July3.

Kelsi Worrell and 19 other UofL swimmers will make the trip to Nebraska...Omaha is a 10 hour drive from the Ville via I-64, I-70 and I-29...to compete for a spot in Rio. 

The 100 meter butterfly is where Worrell creates waves. She set the world record in the event during the 2015 NCAA Championships. This year, she shaved 4/10's of a second off that record...clocking a 49.43. Worrell was the first woman to break 50 seconds in the event. 

Kelsi Worrell is not one-dimensional. She swam on a 4x100 medley team last December in the Duel In The Pool and helped set another world record. 

Kelsi Worrell has asthma. As she has gotten older, her condition has steadily improved. Finding the right medications and making adjustments in training and breaks have helped her overcome asthma attacks. 

Overcoming adversities. Worrell has had a few to battle since coming to Louisville in the fall of 2012. Sprained ankles. Mononucleosis. In the classroom, she's also a champion...named to The College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District Honorable mention squad...which recognizes student-athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom and athletics. 

She was also the ACC Swimmer of the Year. 

Worrell will tell you that out of the water she's "clumsy" and didn't actively pursue any other sports in high school other than swimming. No problem, Kelsi Whirl...stay in the pool as long as you want. 

In the world of competitive swimming, Worrell has shown time and time again that she has what it takes to acheive greatness. We look forward to seeing her in the trials and in Rio. Keep maving waves, KelsiWhirl. 

Monday Cardinal Couple - 2015-2016 Comes to a Close

2015-2016 Finishes On a Heartbreak

Baseball finishes out the NCAA competitions for the school year with the College World Series in Omaha.  The Louisville Baseball Cards won't be making the trip this year after a heartbreaking loss to The University of California, Santa Barbara.  There were echoes of last year, with a walk-off grand slam to win the game by a California team to make the trip to Omaha, and the crowd to make a frustrated trip back to their homes.

That puts a wrap on UofL sports for the 2015-2016 season, though a number of UofL student athletes will still be competing over the summer months in individual events and representing their country on various national team in multiple competitions.  The biggest, of course, is the Olympics centered in Rio de Janeiro where UofL will have a number of swimmers competing, both current and alumni.  Of particular interest on this site, Kelsi Worrell, still has to win her spot on the squad in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials from June 26th to July 3rd, which will be held in Omaha, Nebraska.  Other swimmers, on the men's side of things, have already punched their Brazil tickets through their affiliation with other countries, including host Brazil, and Venezuela.

Emmonnie Henderson will have one more chance to punch her ticket to Rio as Paulie mentioned yesterday, so look for coverage of that.  Other sports that will be active over the summer in non-collegiate efforts will be tennis and golf.

Summer Series

Last summer Paulie and I laughed about, and lamented, the challenge of writing an article every day
about UofL women's athletics through the slow summer months as well as co-hosting an hour long talk radio show on Saturdays.  These are news outlets that we are committed to and will, of course, continue this summer as well.

One thing that we're working on that I'll tease you with now, is a series of guests on The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour over the summer.  Several months ago, we had a guest in-studio, Clay "Point" Barnes, who is a videographer with UofL Athletics, and that show, where we talked a lot about what it's like to work "Behind The Scenes" was so well received, we decided to make a bit of a series of it this summer.

Already lined up for in-studio appearances are Lori Korte with UofL Sports Information, who Paulie and I interact with a lot throughout the year in covering Field Hockey, Women's Tennis, and Softball.

We also got a commitment, and just have to work out scheduling, from Nicole Lowry, who worked in Sports Medicine as a trainer for Volleyball and Lacrosse this year.  We'll be working on lining up other guests throughout the summer to give you a glimpse of the various departments of UofL Athletics that all work together to support the student-athletes and put on all of the sporting events we all enjoy.  We'll be trying to get guests from Academic Services, Marketing (Point is in this department, but it's a department that has many diverse roles, so we may end up getting several guests from this group), Compliance, and other departments.

We may also take the opportunity to speak with some less "up front" people involved in some of the various sports programs to explore what all it is that someone in the position of "Director of Operations" actually does (hint: a LOT) and maybe hear from some assistant coaches while we're at it.

Summers can be a bit slow in the collegiate sports world, but I think we've got ideas lined up that should keep you all excited to open your browser and tune in WCHQ throughout these warm months.

A disappointing finish for Henderson in Discus -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

E FINISHES 22nd IN NCAA DISCUS

Emmonnie Henderson finished her run in the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship with the discus throw...coming in 22nd. out of the 24 throwers. 

Her coach, Dale Cowper, was philosophical about the finish: 

"Today was a disappointment, to say the least. Emmonnie is simply better than her performances over the week represent. We'll regroup and build a different set of results next time." 

'Next time' appears most likely to be her senior season at Louisville since none of her throws in the shot put or discus over the last month match the qualifying numbers for the US Olympic team. July 1-10 will be the last chance for participants to achieve qualifying numbers for the squad...currently the qualifying standard is 57 meters in the discus and 17.6 meters in the shot put. 

Henderson threw a 49.66 in the discus yesterday and 16.37 in the shot put Thursday...so there is work to be done. Her best throw this season in the shot was 16.55 meters. 

Still arguably the best women's field performer in the history of Louisville women's track and field, we hope "E" can continue to improve and rejoin the nation's best in the events.

NO CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR

In case you've stopped by looking for the link for this week's CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR...we did not do a show due to conflicts with the station's involvement in the MIGHTY KINDNESS EARTH DAY event yesterday at the Waterfront Park. Paulie was able to get a pre-recorded half-hour of HANDICAPPING HEROES to the station and it was broadcast at noon yesterday.

E throws for NCAA Discus title today...Meet WBB 2017 prospect Michaela Onyenwere -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

EMMONNIE HENDERSON THROWS TONIGHT

Louisville's Emmonnie Henderson participates tonight in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Oregon Ducks Track and Field Stadium. The event is scheduled to start around 6 p.m.

She'll look to do better than last year's 3rd place finish...a toss of 58.34m...against a very competitive field. "E" is ranked 20th in the field of 24. ACC's Florida State has two competitors that will toss for the title. 

Best of luck to "E"! Shock 'em again this year.

MICHAELA ONYENWERE HAS CARDS ON HER TABLE

One of the more intriguing 2017 WBB prospects, Michaela Onyenwere has released her short list of colleges and Louisville has made the list...along with UCLA, USC, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arizona State. 

The 5'11" wing/forward has done great things at Grandview, CO in her high school career. She's back-to-back Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year. Her squad went 26-1 last year and she averaged 24.5 ppg and 10.6 rebounds. She #14 with HoopGurlz

Coaches marvel at her speed. With little training, she ran track also in the spring and qualified for four events in the State finals...finishing second in the 100m, third in the 200m, fifth in the 400m and fifth in the long jump. She can cover baseline and side-to-side on the hardwood with eye-popping quickness. 

Track could definitely be an option for the speedster but she's looking at hoops for her college student-athlete pursuit. 

We'll keep an eye on her senior season...but won't blink...she's liable to zip right by us.
