Justine Sowry Interview -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FIELD HOCKEY PREPARING FOR THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

I had the great opportunity to sit down with Louisville Field Hockey head coach Justine Sowry yesterday to catch up on things with her and the program. The entire interview will play on our Saturday morning CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR...which begins at 11 a.m.

Here are some of the highlights:

-- On Camps:

" It's the summer season and with Field Hockey we have had a lot of young kids on campus, teaching them the ropes and the skills of Field Hockey. We just finished our second week of our 'kiddies' skills camp. The numbers are growing...we had over a hundred at each camp. We had a really great time and our staff had really great energy with these kids."

-- On The Five Players selected for the USA Young Women's Championships:

"I am really proud and two of the rising seniors in Shannon Sloss and Erin McCrudden...they've been doing it every year since they've been here at UofL. It's really going to help them with their leadership skills and bringing back to our program for this year. The other three are getting a taste of it as well. Nicole Woods just got back from winning a silver medal in the Pan American Games. Taylor Stone just got back from a USA U 19 tour and has aspirations to move up to the next age level group."

-- Ayeshia McFerran:

"She had an outstanding freshman year...becoming our first freshman ever to earn All-American honors. She'll be getting her banner up on the wall along with Victoria Stratton this fall. Ayeshia has continued to be involved and we're working with the Irish Federation Field Hockey Association...so she's able to do both right now. She had a really successful tour in a tournament in New Zealand. She did great! It went to one-on-one penalty shootouts multiple times...and it turned out well. She's got her summer planned with international hockey and is on track to being a long term international star."

-- The season ahead:

"Being part of the ACC, the best conference, it's always going to be challenging. When we look at the average RPI of the conferences...the average for the ACC is 5.5 and the next strongest is the Big 10...which was something like 26 or 27, so we're crushing the other conferences. We've also got teams like Michigan and Northwestern back on the schedule...teams that are top 10 in the nation. It's a schedule that is stronger than it was last year, incredibly challenging...but this is where we want to be."

-- On Acdemics:

"We recently had the best semester academically in the five and one half years I've been here. They're great, incredible all-around student-athletes.

Be sure to catch the entire interview to find out:

-- What did the Field Hockey squad receive a national award for recently?

-- Where does Coach Sowry see that the squad will be much stronger at this year?

-- Which players will be expected to step it up for Coach  Sowry this fall?

-- Just how much help will the team be getting from the incoming freshmen and graduate students?

All in all, a wonderful afternoon spent with the energetic and eloquent Justine Sowry looking at Louisville Field Hockey. My sincere thanks to Coach for spending a few minutes with me to catch us up on things in Trager and beyond. Get more on this interview Saturday when we play it on The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour!

Not in our house -- Louisville Field Hockey boots Wolverines 2-1 in double overtime. Monday Cardinal Couple

LOTTA KAHLERT GETS GAME WINNER IN 2-1 CARDS WIN

The #12th ranked Louisville Field Hockey squad pushed their record to 10-2 and won their 16 straight game in Trager Stadium Sunday with a double-overtime 2-1 win over Michigan.

Shannon Sloss broke free from the UM defense two minutes into the second overtime and found Kahlert open on the left side of the Michigan cage. Kahlert took the pass and slapped it past the Michigan goalie for her fifth goal of the season and the game winner.

This one was a defense battle for the first 35
minutes...each squad getting off only three shots each and no scores. The Wolverines came out after the break and found the net six minutes into the final half. That 1-0 lead held for UM until the Cards capitalized on a corner play with less than five minutes left in regulation. Mallory Mason tracked down a missed Chile Garcia shot on goal and flipped it into the net to tie it up.

The squads battled through a scoreless extra session before Kahlert provided the game winner in the second extra session.

Coach Sowry discusses the win:

" Michigan is a very good team and they are well coached. It was a battle. They play a great style of hockey. We were tired from the last game (Duke). I'm definitely not questioning our character or how tough we are from a mental standpoint...but we have to be smarter with the ball. At the end of the day our team showed a lot of character and it was a great play by Shannon and Lotta."

The Cards take to the road for their next game...an ACC battle against Syracuse on Saturday.

- Soccer will be #2 seed in AAC Tournament

SLOSS HELPS HANG LOSS ON NOVA

Louisville Field Hockey improved to 13-4 on the season with a convincing 5-1 win at Villanova Sunday afternoon. The Cards are 5-1 in BIG EAST play and in a three-way tie for first with Connecticut and ODU.

Shannon Sloss contributed two goals in the victory, which dropped Villanova to 3-11 and 0-6 in the BIG EAST.

Louisville got their first score from Becca Maddock six minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Sloss picked up her first score. The Cards completed first half scoring when Mallory Mason found net on a penalty shot.

The Cards wasted no time making it 4-0 when the second half began. Sloss rebounded a shot from Victoria Stratton just two minutes into the final frame and drove it home for her second score of the afternoon. With nine minutes expired in the second half...Alyssa Voelmle also converted on a penalty stroke to make it 5-0 Cards.

The Wildcats got their lone goal with 10 minutes left in the contest.

The Cards return home for contests against Providence Friday night at 6 p.m. It'll be the BIG EAST regular season closer. Kent State comes in Sunday for Senior Day.

With the win, the Cards have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championships...which will be held Nov 8th and 10th at UConn.

Volleyball Sweeps UConn

Brooke Mattingly hit .500 against the Huskies.

Brooke Mattingly hit .500 against the Huskies.
Brooke Mattingly had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 win over UConn to stay unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference volleyball Sunday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. in a nationally televised match on ESPNU.   "Emily Juhl did a phenomenal job of filling in for the injured Haley Pouliezos and her passing kept us in system and allowed the middles to hit .500 and .625 which opened up the outsides on the pins. Juhl's serves kept UConn out of system and she is a heck of a weapon back at the service line," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.   Juhl had 10 kills with 11 digs and three aces. Maya McClendon had her eighth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. She also posted a pair of aces. U of L, 14-8, 9-0, hit .333 on the match and outblocked the Huskies 8-3 with eight total aces.   In the first set, U of L used a 5-0 run early and then slowly pulled away from the Huskies, who were hampered by .091 hitting. Louisville put together a 7-2 run late for the 25-13 win. The Cards hit .452 and had two blocks and four aces, three of which were from Juhl. Brooke Mattingly connected for five kills and two blocks.   In the second set, UConn tied at five and then built a 10-8 lead. The team traded points until Katie George served for four straight including an ace to give U of L some breathing room at 15-12 and force the Huskies to burn their final timeout. The Cards had a 9-4 run late for the 25-19 win.

In the third set, the Cards roared out to a 12-4 lead but UConn's .081 hitting quelled their comeback attempt as the Huskies fell 25-16.

Sunday Cardinal Couple -- Field Hockey wins in 2 O.T.'s -- Swimming in 3rd place

SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Schniedtmiller scores for Cardinal win

- Kylliainen wins three in Dallas

Today is "bet you can't spell it correctly" day at CC, as we go over the exciting Field Hockey win at Trager and swimming's impressive show in Dallas. Congratulations to both squads and Erin and Tanja...much easier to type than their last names...

CARDS RULE RUT-GALS

Erin scored after a set up from Mallory Mason and Shannon Sloss (who we'll refer to as MM and SS the rest of the article) and drove one in with 5:49 left in the second overtime to give #17 Louisville a 2-1 win on senior weekend at Trager Stadium. The Cards go to 11-4 with the win over the Scarlet Knights and 4-1 in THE BIG EAST conference with the "W".

Rutgers hit the scoreboard first...stunning Louisville with a goal less than two minutes into action...when Alicia Stever sent a long pass to a driving Rachel Yaney...who deflected it by Cardinal goalie Sydney King.

It would be the 8-6, 2-3 Scarlet Knights only tally of the afternoon.

For a long time, it looked like it might be enough for the Piscataway players. With less than five minutes to go in regulation, though, SS tracked down a feed from Elisa Garcia and flipped it past the Rutgers goal defender to tie the contest.

Neither team could produce a goal in the 15 minute, 7-on-7 first overtime. Louisville survived three penalty corner attempts by Rutgers in the final overtime before going on the winning drive.

The Cards outshot RU 24-11. Sydney King had seven saves...Rutgers goalie Sarah Stuby produced 10.

The Cards conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. game versus Northwestern at Trager.

Tanja splashes past foes in SMU CLASSIC

Nice performance in setting two school records in Louisville's third place finish in the prestigious event that features national powerhouses UNC, UCLA and University of Miami...plus UofL, IU and SMU.

Tanja scored first in the 200-fly, 200 IM and 400 IM.

Other successful ladies-in-the-water were Katie Worrell winning the 100-fly. Louisville also had several third place finishes against competition that all finished in the top 25 of the NCAA Tournament last season.
