Ayeisha and the Green Army -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

Field Hockey World Cup

We've been covering the Field Hockey World Cup, and particularly UofL's Ayeisha McFerran's presence as the stand-out goalkeeper for the Irish "Green Army".

Today is the culmination of the whole World Cup event, with the Championship game at 11:30 (EDT, assuming I have my timezone conversions correct, as always).  Live streaming of the event does not seem to be readily available that I have been able to find.

Ireland has shocked the world by advancing this far in the World Cup, arriving to the event as the 16th ranked team in the world (of the World Cup teams, only India was ranked lower), and were the last team (calendar wise) to qualify for the event.

They advanced out of pool play over the aforementioned India, as well as the US (who had UofL alumna Nicole Woods on the team) and England.  In the quarterfinals, they matched up against India, again, advancing to meet Spain yesterday afternoon (9am start EDT).  The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour covered the news that the Green Army did get the victory (after some score confusion online...information about this event has been very difficult to come by) in a penalty stroke shoot-out.

In today's Championship action, The Netherlands are undoubtedly favored to win, being the top ranked team internationally, and doing so by a significant margin in point totals.

Expect Ireland to continue their playing style of maintaining a strong defensive line, with McFerran
providing the backstop to that effort.  While I don't wish for a penalty stroke shoot-out for Ayeisha's sake (because: stress levels through the roof), it may be one of the most likely prospects for an Irish win today.

We spoke about it on the CCRH yesterday, and in articles here on the site previously, but it's notable just how much attention McFerran has been getting from Field Hockey commentators for her efforts in anchoring this strong Irish defensive effort.  The Netherlands are a team that score in bunches, advancing out of pool play with winning scores of 7-0, 7-1, and 12-1.

On the UofL Field Hockey front, practices begin tomorrow.  I know Coach Justine Sowry has been in London for the World Cup event, we have no word on whether she'll be back in time for start of practice tomorrow, though I would expect she would be.

Will McFerran make it back for the start of practice, that's a really good question as well, my guess would be no, but only delayed by a day or two.

UofL's season officially gets underway August 19th vs Xavier at 4pm, with the Alumnae exhibition game the day before at 1pm.

FIBA U18 Update

Coach Jeff Walz and the FIBA U18 team in Mexico had the day off, yesterday so we don't have any action to report on, here.

They will be back in action today against El Salvador at, 3pm (again, insert timezone caveat here).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2v3q5Taqc&list=PLCXERy73Oiz8QanMjYbVtFD-ZUmtgl-fq.  They have a playlist specifically for the U18 Americas Championship that should filter out all of the other FIBA events going on all over the world right now.  You can hit that playlist at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2v3q5Taqc&list=PLCXERy73Oiz8QanMjYbVtFD-ZUmtgl-fq.

Live streaming of all of these games are available on the FIBA Youtube channel at

Look for updates from Paulie tomorrow on this game.

Volleyball Pre-Season Honors

I've got to get a quick Volleyball update in here.

UofL was picked 2nd in conference in pre-season coaches voting.  Pitt received all of the first place votes they could (a coach can't vote for their own team), with UofL receiving the vote from Pitt's Dan Fisher.

Louisville got the most players on the pre-season All-ACC team, with 4: Molly Sauer, Melanie McHenry, Wilma Rivera, and Jasmine Bennett all being selected.  Pitt placed 3 on the team, and no other teams had more than 2.

Volleyball gets underway with the exhibition Red vs Black intra-squad scrimmage at Cardinal Arena, on August 18th at 6pm.  The season officially gets underway on the 24th with the beginning of the Cardinal Classic.  UofL starts with Tennessee-Martin (The Skyhawks) at 12:30pm, and then another match at 7:30 vs Southern Illinois (The Salukies).

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Three of the knuckleheads (Paulie, Case, and myself), and guest Mike "The Guy with 3 (or 4,
depending on how you count) First Names" Gilpatrick were in the studio.  We covered a lot of sports ground, got in a fairly tough quiz (with one pretty confusing question, but we all got credit for it, so we're not complaining), and just generally lots of fun.

  1. Ouch. 6-0 Netherlands blank Ayeshia and the Green Army in the final.

A #1 vs. #16 match. Luck of the Irish ran out.
