Honors For Katie George

This is getting to be a common occurrence...Katie George winning an honor.

Beauty Pageant?  No, I'm talking about the Athletic Director Honor Roll.  Katie, along with another 368 student-athletes at UofL, achieved at least a 3.0 GPA in the fall semester to be named to the Athletic Director Honor Roll.  Along with Katie, Volleyballers Laura Blab, Maggie DeJong, Tara Gowan, Janelle Jenkins, Maya McClendon, Roxanne McVey, Lyndsay Palmer, Courtney Robison, and Gabbie Wiley were on the list.

The honorees for Women's Basketball are Sydney Brackemyre (redshirting), Arica Carter, Shawnta' Dyer, Ariana Freeman, Sara Hammond, Emmonie Henderson, Myisha Hines-Allen, Mariya Moore, Jude Schimmel, and Sheronne Vails.  At the post-season picnic last year, Emmonie Henderson and Coach Walz joked about her dropping the team average as a result of her being in Speed Scientific School for Engineering, but she commented that she was switching majors out of Speed School.  It's good to see her academics improving.

For other sports that we cover here on Cardinal Couple; Lacrosse had 26, Field Hockey had 17, Rowing tallied 51, Softball put 17 on the list including all three of Sid, Syd and Szyd, 9 from Women's Golf, Women's Soccer claims 22, Women's Swimming and Diving - 19, Women's Tennis had 8, and Women's Track and Field got 30 across the finish line.

The full list, including spirit team members, managers and other students involved with the athletic department is available at http://www.gocards.com/sports/athletics/spec-rel/011215aaa.html.

...And a Beauty Pageant

Yes, Katie George did also win Miss Kentucky USA last night in a pageant at Ursuline Arts Center here in Louisville.  In addition to reigning in the state of Kentucky, she will compete in the Miss USA competition which is usually held in June.  The winner of the Miss USA pageant competes in the Miss Universe pageant.

Swimming Honors

After a big win over Florida State in a meet at The Ralph Wright Natatorium on campus, junior Kelsi Worrell, who has been scooping up victories and honors this year, collected another.  With a couple of individual first place finishes, and participating in three relay victories, Kelsi has been named the ACC swimmer of the week.  Kelsi beat the pool record by over a half a second with a 49.15 100 free, and also claimed an individual win in the 100 fly with a time of 53.67.  Her splits in the relays were 22.05 in the 200 free, 23.52 in the 200 medley, and 52.09 in the 400 medley.

Basketball Rankings

By the time you read this, the last college fall sport (Football) will be over for the academic year, that leaves us, for the next few weeks or so, with only Basketball to talk about.  OK, so let's talk about what happened in the rankings this week.

To say that the rankings got shaken up is a very large understatement.  With all sorts of upsets this week in the ranks of the top teams, Louisville had a real chance to take a few steps up in the rankings.  At the time of this writing, the coach's poll hasn't been updated yet, but in the AP media poll, the Cards climbed two spots from 6th to 4th into a tie with Texas.  Texas dropped to the 4th place tie from 3rd after a two point loss to Iowa State.  The other mover that dropped to let Louisville step up was Notre Dame after they took a substantial loss by 15 points to Miami on Thursday.

Will the rankings chaos continue this week?  The only losses
that would directly benefit Louisville's rankings would be losses for #2 UConn, #3 Baylor, and #1 South Carolina.  UConn starts the week with Temple, but maybe their best chance of taking an upset loss in conference would be in their Sunday tilt with USF who is unranked, but receiving votes in both polls.

South Carolina only has one game this week, against a mediocre Missouri team.  Meanwhile Baylor plays Iowa State tonight who will be flying high after just bloodying the nose of the Texas Longhorns.  The Bears will then take on a mediocre Kansas team on Saturday.

  1. And, not to be negative, our Cards could contribute to the chaos if the team does not focus from the opening tip of each and every game. If being ranked is important, and it is when it comes to seedings, etc, then we need to pay attention to our play and work on beating one team at a time.

  2. This year has the most parity that I have seen in my relatively few years of following the sport. There are still the usually powerhouse programs but others are beginning to seep in, including our Cards. I agree with Vivian, we are not immune to upsets if do not play hard every game and every half

  3. We play hard every half we just miss more open and contested shots in the first half due to nerves and we end up in a hole at halftime.

    1. I would slightly disagree about playing hard every half. There have been a couple of halves this year where Coach has had to call them out on effort expenditure. Usually it is just one or two players...but that Wake Forest first half was just bad with an extra heaping and refill of bad.

    1. That's true. I was sitting here second guessing the polls and while that's really high given our overall experience level I don't see any other teams that deserve to be ranked higher than us right now.

We're going to have to earn it from here on out tho, that's for sure. So much for being under the radar.
