Foul trouble also kept Sara Hammond on the sidelines for the final 15 minutes of the first half...but Moore and Jude Schimmel combined for 20 of the Cards' first half points to counter-balance "double zero" watching from the sideline seats.
If Louisville ended the first half with a flurry, they dumped a blizzard on the bewildered visitors from Atlanta to start the second half.

Game over. Park the Ramblin' Wreck in the garage and begin the substitutions, Jeff.
Louisville would steadily increase the lead the rest of the way...using multiple combinations on the floor. Things got a bit "chippy" at the 6:43 mark and Louisville up 64-37 when "E" and Whiteside had to be separated after Henderson committed a foul after a Whiteside rebound. Whiteside vigorously started clapping in Henderson's face and "E" returned the applause...and moved menacingly forward.
The remaining players on the court stepped in-between the two...the UofL players walking "E" out to half-court... but referee Joe Vaszily (the short one) had seen enough.
Double technical. Media timeout and "E" to the bench for the rest of the game. Who knew applause warranted a "T"?
Good thing, there. Ms. Whiteside probably would have been shot-putted into play-by-play radio announcer Matt Andrews' lap courtside by "Ms .Steel Biceps".

The Cards largest lead came when Jude created a steal and made the layup to give UofL a 71-40...31-point lead over an ACC opponent...with four minutes remaining. Tech did outcore the Cards 8-4 the rest of the way...with Freeman, Carter, Deines, Walton and Vails on the court.
Moore led all scorers with 22 points on 9-12 shooting. She was also the only Card to take or make a three pointer in the contest...going 3 for 6. She was also the only UofL player in double figures for the contest....almost getting a double-double with eight assists.
Louisville goes to 13-1 with the victory...a unexpected but quite welcomed 75-48 win over a 10-5 ACC opponent. A bit of disheartening news in the post game presser, though...Walz indicating that Cortnee Walton was feeling pain in the foot that suffered the broken toe earlier in the season. She'll be re-evaluated again and...sadly...this one is beginning to look like a possible end-of-season for the junior.
Three stats that stood out:
1) Louisville outscored the Techsters 46-28 in the paint
2) Louisville shot a splendid 50% from the floor (30-60)
3) Georgia Tech finished with 29% accuracy (18-62)
A quick turnaround for Louisville...a trip to Pitt for a Sunday tip at 2 p.m. Another opponent that has had an impressive pre-conference run at 10-4. We'll see how that holds up in their first ACC game...the Panthers own an impressive win on the road at Ohio State...but losses to James Madison, Duquesne and Princeton indicate that they may not be ready to be dealt these Cards.
A special thanks to Charlie Springer at www.uoflcardgame.com for photos from Friday night's game. Be sure to check out Charlie's photo gallery at the website. Some good work over there by "The Observer".

Nice Paulie .."24-2 run puts Ramblin wreck in the garage" . I didn't realize we had that big a run. Solid performances by Sara and Jude again. Mariya was terrific. Arica did a nice job too. Shawnta' and Myisha seem to be hitting a wall or something. Shawnta' was terrific in the Cal game, since then yikes!! Be awesome to see Freeman get some more time. Feel bad she isn't getting on the floor more.
ReplyDeleteThe reason she hasn't seen much time is because of unforced TO'S. As soon as she came in the game she tried a move on the perimeter and dribbled the ball off her foot.
DeletePitt currently has won 9 straight at home for the first time ever. Princeton (undefeated ) and James Madison aren't slouches so we could have a good game on our hands. Still cant believe they beat Ohio State on the road. I've seen Ohio State and they are pretty good.
ReplyDeleteBrianna Kiesel and Yacine Diop have been doing some nice things for the Panthers and Stasha Carey is a rebounder...maybe they'll hang with the Cards for awhile....Walz certainly respects them...but I don't think they've got the kids to stop our run-and gun fast break transition. Louisville never employed the press against Ga. Tech and still won by 27. I got a feeling Walz may break out the "Mad dog" 1-2-2, full court, turnover-creator against the Panthers.
DeletePaulie
Pitt only goes 8 deep and 3 coming off the bench are guards. We should be able to wear them down with our post depth.
DeleteNice piece of writing Paulie. Great to get that first ACC win out of the way like this! It's sure nice to have our depth. I scratch my head sometimes with Sara's habitual early foul troubles and some of Bria's Mad Dog drives that end with shots not coming within five feet of the rim but so far this year someone has been stepping up when others aren't getting the job done. Great to see Mariya get her stroke going again.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that makes U of L WBB fun is watching Walz's coaching strategies. I think it was in the second half coming out of a time out or at least off a dead ball but there was a play when Walz had four defenders rush the ball at the same time and the GT player promptly threw it out of bounds. I've never seen a called quadruple team before. He keeps them guessing that's for sure.
It's nice to have E on our side. I'm not crazy about some of the stuff she pulls but her game continues to improve and her physicality is going to continue to be valuable in league play.
Good Luck on our first ACC road trip! If anyone has online viewing options for either game please let us know.
The ACC and Louisville websites are indicating this is a ESPN 3 game. It'll also be on CARDS TV. "E" embraces her role as the Cards enforcer.. She doesn't purposely "go after" an opposing player for no reason...but she will stand her ground.
DeleteIt's what happened last night. "E" and Whiteside were going after a missed Pitt shot and Whiteside got there first. "E" was trying to tie it up and a power struggle developed over the ball. E won, but Vaszily the ref felt E was too aggressive in her attempt to create an out-of-bound possession tie-up call and whistled "E' for her third foul. Whitehead started clapping her hands vigorously and something may have been said. E responded by clapping her hands rapidly and took a step toward Whiteside. That's when the double technical was called.
I loved the four player, rush the ball-handler tactic too...I think it was after a Pitt 30 second timeout and Pitt ball handler Antonia Peresson panicked. Reminded me of the scene in Ghostbusters when the boys bum rushed the apparition they discovered in the library. LOL
Paulie
No word on any TV for the Wake Forest game yet...Sunday contest there...not sure if Wake has something similiar to GOCARDS.TV
DeletePaulie
Bria had several shots blocked on her. Open court skills getting worse. She is going to hurt us against better teams. She hurt us last night more than the box score suggested. Plays very unaware and out of control with the ball. Only time I didn't cringe when she had it was when Mariya fed her for the quick jumpers. That's what is has gotten to. Please just don't handle the ball.
DeleteGood things: Her defense and hops and rebounding
I think last year Jude was just too timid to bring the ball up aggressively. Constantly tried to back her way into the offense. She's over that now and looking pretty good. Her understudy Arica has great basic full court ball handling skills and is getting more confident & aggressive every game. Hopefully that limits Bria's ball handling responsibilities as I agree that isn't her strong suite. Bria is great as long as she balances her drives with her newly found mid-range jumper.
DeleteShe does rock on D and rebounds & runs the court like crazy. In a perfect world I'd love to see 6 ppg on jumpers, 4 on free throws and 4 on drives from Bria. We'll see.
North Carolina's Xavier McDaniel out indefinitely having surgery on leg.
ReplyDeleteWake Forest site shows the school participating in the CBS college sports site with the Louisville Women's game being played. The last I checked, the Lou site shows listen only. collegesportslive
ReplyDeleteTomorrow's game appears to be only on ESPN3
Does anyone else who has paid for Cards TV/ College Sports Network have problems this year trying to connect to the site either at home or while at the game in YUM?
ReplyDeleteAmong other issues i regularly gst not authorized messages which come and go.
Has anyone been successful trying to listen to AJ... Prior to the game or the windip after while using these sites or others while at the YUM?
Help
I've watched every available WBB game broadcast this year on Cards TV. Been pretty happy overall although the broadcast and commentary quality vary from game to game. Connection hook up is sometimes slow also. Seems I also remember one or two that were broadcast with no commentary. Silent picture mode, which I thought was pretty weird.
DeleteResolution isn't great but it's at least watchable. I've got one of those big Apple monitors and can't watch in expanded mode due to choppiness of the transmission. I find the same problem with ESPN3 tho. Don't know if it makes any difference but I'm hooking up through Cox cable internet.
Notice Coach doesnt yell at Moore or Scimmell?
ReplyDeleteI think smart coaches handle each player in the manner which will best work for that player. I don't know Moore well enough to say but something tells me that
DeleteJude already yells at herself when she makes mistakes more than Coach would done. He is not going to gain anything by emotionally beating up on Jude as she has already done that to herself.
ESPN3 announcing team was different. The play by play guy Gary Vogel was dreadful. The color woman corrected him 5 or 6 times on wrong names mistakes without it making him look bad.
ReplyDeletePaulie any plans for ACC to have their own TV network in the works?
