Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Sticks, bats, banners and stats

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Four StickCards selected to Regional honors

-Softball banquet information announced

-WBB Banner to be revealed at FSU game

-WBB stats and commnetary

Four players on the UofL Field Hockey team have been selected to the All-West Region teams. Erin Schneidtmiller (senior), Alyssa Voelmle (junior) and Sydney King (sophomore) were first team selections. Sophomore Elisa Garcia made the second squad.

Where's the love for Shannon Sloss...ye team selectors?

The choices are good ones. Erin was an instrumental forward in the Cards 15-5 season and third on the team in goals.

Voelmle, a midfielder, led Louisville with 11 goals and was also a All-BIG EAST team member the last three years. Her leadership role as a senior (and former walk-on) will be greatly missed

King took over goalie duties this season and was a masterful keeper of the net, gathering four shutouts and playing the position every minute of the season that a goalie was a part of the Louisville defense (final dig at Coach Sowry for pulling the goalie against ODU -- all in jest of course). Her 1.41 GAA allowed the Cards to go 6-1 in regular season BIG EAST play.

Garcia, a sophomore midfielder, scored three times and dished out nine assists during the Cards 15-5 season. She'll be a main focus and provider next year.

We're still scratching our heads on how the Cards were left out of the NCAA Tournament. What kind of post-season play involves 19 teams? We get and understand 16, even 20, 24 or 32. We're guessing someone in NCAA Field Hockey planning was in front of a dartboard and decided to go with whatever number the dart landed on.

The challenge is next year. Going to the toughest conference in college field hockey. You can rest assured the Sowry, staff and players are already gearing up for the task.

Louisville softball will have their Bullpen Club dinner this year on Jan. 25th at the Brown and Williamson Club. It's a Saturday night and the guest speaker will be Monica Abbott, former star and Tennessee and US Olympian.

Louisville softball returns a veteran lineup that includes Cardinal greats Katie Keller, Whitney Arion, "Marge" Ruckenbrod, Hannah Kiyohara, Caralisa Connell, Rachel LeCoq and Taner Fowler. The freshman class looks to be one of the best in school history.

The season begins for the fence swingers on Feb. 7th. in Boca Raton at the FAU Kickoff Classic.

Hmmm...I got kin in Boca Raton. Could be time for a visit.

The 2013 Women's NCAA runner-up banner will be unfurled at the Louisville vs. Florida State game on Sunday Nov. 24th. It's a Sunday contest and fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 1:40 p.m.

Tickets for just $3 at Kroger for this one if you have a Kroger Plus Card. A special video of the magical run is planned for the crowd and it's a 'Red Out' game...so you know what to don. Here's a challenge to you.

Bring someone to the game that has never experienced the thrill and excitement of UofL women's basketball. Let them see the effort, the crowd response...the total picture.

My guess is you will create a frequent visitor if you do.

What stands out?

1) Asia leads the team in scoring
2) Six Cards are in double figures in scoring and Bria is close.
3) Louisville is outscoring opponents by almost 23 pts. per game.
4) UofL is outrebounding opponents by +16.2 a game.
5) The Cards are shooting .497 so far. One outta two isn't bad.

What have we seen?

Two expected blowouts of teams that, although good, didn't have the horses to run with Walz's fillies. An impressive dismantling of a team that will make some serious noise in the SEC. A thrilling and gusty effort on the road against a top 15 opponent when the refs, the crowd and the breaks were piling up against the team. They refused to lose. The world saw that.

This UofL women's basketball team is special. Opponents know not who will deliver the crippling blow. Jeff Walz stands the the edge of the cliff and sees that the valley is his to conquer. The mission now is to keep up the intensity, fine-tune the engine and finish. Weapons? Oh, yeah. The man has weapons. More than a Texas arms and munititons dealer.

Finish. It's an important word. It's in the Cards' mission statement this year.

Unfinished business.

There will be other tough tests. Road games at UK and WKU will be challenges. Colorado returns nine letterwinners and will not come into the YUM! and roll over. The AAC, although not as strong as next year's destination, still has opponents that are very capable of putting an "L" in the overall body of Cardinal work. USF, Rutgers, Memphis and others.

And, the Huskies.

One day at a time, one game at a time. Fill the order, send it to shipping and work on the next one. Do so knowing that backing the processors is the most avid, supportive, enthusiastic and appreciative fan base in women's college basketball.

Unfinished business.

  1. Appreciate the stat line. I don't know if most of the readers here follow instagram but I thought I'd forward a link to Coach Sam's Instagram page. She's got a ton of great team pics & videos over the past year that if you haven't seen you might want to take a look at.

In particular here's her pic post of our walking wounded from last year. Pretty cool that two of the three have already scored over 20 and we're only four games into the season. I also think that the fact that they were part of the team last year but didn't get to play in the NCAA run has probably put a fire in them that is really going to help this year. That and the fact we brought most of last year's squad back too.

A pretty significant effort on Coach Sam's part and pretty cool stuff.
