TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Tuesday brings another edition of Sandy's laundry day, read by fastidious homemakers and hotel employees from sea to shining sea...and complimentary breakfast bar.)

This week I am trying out one load in each of the machines in laundry where a later report indicating the best to worse wash results will be issued.

GOLF

The golf team is preparing for their upcoming Sunday – Tuesday matches in Sorrento, Florida where they will participate in the UCF Golf Tournament.   Even if we can’t go, perhaps we can all do our part with a shout out to the team with words of encouragement and maybe they will bring some of that warm Florida weather back to us.

VOLLEYBALL
As we all were fortunate to read this week’s Sunday edition where events from the Volleycards sold out banquet at PNC were described.  A special link labeled as Photo Gallery can be found at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/020313aaa.html# where transitions and a slide show are available.  For those of you who cannot get enough of the evening, the link also provides an additional read of the night’s events from another perspective.

BASKETBALL
“SHOWTIME”
“Showtime” is back as Shoni Schimmel was named Big East Player of the Week.  The award obviously was strongly influenced by her 38 point South Florida game where she also tied the school record with 8 made 3 pointers.  The complete story can be read at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/020413aaa.html

PITTSBURGH GAME
Fans need to gear up for Saturday’s 2:00 Pittsburgh game at the KFC YUM! Center as our number of regular season home games are drawing to a close.  My understanding is that there will be no television broadcast of the game which leaves radio and Cards TV.  I only wish the timing of the audio from Matt and AJ matched the action on the court as it would be a great addition to following the action on the court.   Add instant replay on the big screen and no home transmission could ever match.  Past time for another record crowd to be cheering on the team!

  1. With the conference schedule just over half-way complete, the spot for third place, currently held by the Lady Cards, is completely up for grabs. The Cards could realistically finish up with a conference record of anywhere from 13-3 to 9-7, and which mark they are are closer to will have significant implications for NCAA seeding and indicate whether this team is sweet sixteen or even elite 8 caliber. Given the injuries to Dyer and Reid, the keys will be Vails and Walton in the paint. They don't need to score much, but they do need to defend and rebound. For those of you who doubt me on this, read my comments regarding line-ups, and, in particular, about the lack of playing time for Slaughter, from earlier in the season.

  2. Well, I for one don't doubt you that Vail and Walton defending and rebounding is a key, but not necessarily THE key. It will certainly depend on much more than that.
Correct about Nita playing more minutes, she is the steadiest player so far this season and has stepped up her game tremendously, doing a lot of things she may not have had to do with Dyer and Reid out. But for the Cards to have tourney success, the ladies must continue getting better, Sara needs to stop with the silly fouls, Vails needs to quit missing bunnies, Shoni needs to be Shoni more, Megan needs to keep improving, and it would help if Bria used her mid-range jumper more.
And if I remember correctly (without going back to look), you were one of the most vocal about Shoni playing 40 minutes at point (she's not even playing point anymore) and Jude and Shelby not seeing any court time (Jude is probably playing point more minutes than anyone, and doing a fine job at it, and Shelby still does what she does in the minutes she's on the court).
Down to 9 players means everyone will need to see minutes, and personally, I'm satisfied with the way the season has gone so far. Think we are a top ten team despite the injuries, with a lot of upside still.
