Recruiting round up

.
WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Jenny catches us up on the recruit scenario.

-Despite losing Russell, Cards have done well with 2013 class.

-Cards exhibition game against Eckerd tonight.

Alexis Montgomery, a guard out of Beaverton, OR who was on campus this past weekend, has given her verbal pledge to the Louisville program.  Montgomery is the second 2013 prospect to do so within the last day.
Attached is a good read, from Oregon Live reporter Jerry Ulmer. Link below:

Montgomery Chooses Louisville
Montgomery chose Louisville over Seattle University, Hawaii and Virginia Tech.  Montgomery is ranked as the #57 guard in the class and joins #21 Emmonnie Henderson and JUCO stand out Janelle Cannon so far in the class of 2013.
Coach Walz and company are not done yet, either.  Louisville is still in the running for top prospects Imani Wright (Texas) and Jordan Reynolds (Oregon).   Keep it tuned here Cardinal faithful, for all the latest recruiting round up.

It is hard not to be a bit disappointed when you come this close to landing the #1 recruit in the nation...to be the final cut on her list.  You have to respect Russell’s decision, though.  She is an incredible player and we look for her to have much success in her collegiate career.
That being said, Card Nation has much to look forward to!  The Cardinals are preseason ranked #9 in the country; play at an amazing facility known as The KFC YUM! Center, and have a great coaching staff that was in it until the end with the #1 recruit in the nation.   I expect more of these epic recruiting battles in the future.  The Louisville program has proven that it is relevant and can go toe to toe with the top programs in the country.  You win some recruiting battles and you lose some.  When going against the best in the nation, one is bound to lose a few battles.
Our Cards are loaded with talent and are poised to take the program back to the Final Four as soon as this year.  The coaching staff continues to work to bring in top prospects.  Attendance is growing, and no doubt will continue to grow, and we look to break attendance records this year!

The Cardinal Spirit is alive and well.

The future remains bright in Louisville!  Card Fans, stand up and support our team!  Your first opportunity to do so happens tonight, at The YUM! Center.  The Cardinals play their one and only exhibition game against Eckerd College at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is free!  Get your trick or treating done early and head down to the YUM Center for more treats!!
It is always a great day to be a Cardinal!  L1C4, baby!

We leave you today with a great song by the Byrds from 1970 which covers desire, pursuit, defeat and determination to try again. It parallels the pursuit of Ms. Russell.

  1. Don't feel bad UofL fans. You gave it a good try. Had us scared. She's dreamed of playing for UT since the 3rd grade though and that's hard to recruit against. You'll land others.

  2. Nice song selection! I saw Roger McGuinn do the Chestnut Mare song several years ago in a bar in Florida. He can still deliver it. Be strong, Cardinal fans. We don't hear no bell.

  3. U of L is on a roll and is building steam each year. It is obvious that the sports nation now recognizes Jeff and his teams as a major force in the sport not only this year but in those to come.
We have turned the corner into the next level.

As a fan I can't wait to see what will happen next and to watch Jeff develop these recruits into their full potential while at U of L.

    1. Hey, forget about that bozo Nick. He does not represent the majority of our fan base. As a UT fan, I have the utmost respect for the UofL program and see great things in store for the Cardinals, Coach Walz and wish you the best of luck this year and beyond.

  6. ...and the rich get richer. I wonder if there will ever be more parody in the women's game? I am hopeful, but the same teams getting the best recruits makes it hard to break into that elite level. I am confident if anyone can do it, Jeff Walz can!

  7. We will survive. We will grow and prosper. I do believe that parity is upon us and despite
the Griner effect and Baylor, the days of one team's dominance is not as strong as it was a decade ago when UConn and Tenn. seemed to be a step above all.

  8. So lets call this what it is bcoz montgomery went first she may have already knew that russell was tn bound and it was nice of russell to get her friend a scholarship offer. dont think for a moment these girls dont plan stuff out. i would think walz is steaming mad right about now. the man got played.

    1. Oh, please Cardinaltruinthe502...Seriously? Maybe Mercedes was the second gunman on the grassy knoll in Dallas, too. Conspiracy theory? I don't see it. My best friend and I went to different colleges. It happens. And what if Alexis Montgomery turns out to be one of the best guards in the history of the program? Where's that theory now?

My guess is that Coach Walz is disappointed in losing a highly ranked recruit he spent a lot of time and effort on...but he will get others down the road and will take this current team on to great things this year. Thank the man for his efforts and attempts. It's a measure of how far this program has come in the last several years.

    2. Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing JFK, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to conclude that (1) Walz made an offer to Alexis Montgomery ("AM") solely for the purpose of increasing his chances of getting Mercedes Russell ("MR"), and (2) AM and MR coordinated the timing of their announcements so that AM's offer wouldn't get revoked after MR announced Tenn. The support for these conclusions lies in the following facts: AM's ranking is WAY below the ranking of the other players that Walz is after; the other schools that AM had offers from are WAY below Louisville's caliber; and Walz does NOT need another guard.
I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with what Walz did, and, even though I think the timing of the two verbals was coordinated, I don't think that Walz "got played." To the contrary, I'm sure that Walz took into account all permutations of possible decisions by MR and AM and coordinated timing by them, and he decided that it was worth the risk to try to get MR.
I also disagree that Walz will go out of his way to make life miserable for AM, but, after a year on the bench and no prospects for playing time in the future, AM may well decide that she wants to go somewhere else to play. In the meantime, for her first year out of high school, she will have "earned" the equivalent of about $50,000 after taxes. I don't see any victims in this story, just rational decision making by all parties involved.

  9. We all know Walz is going to put Alexis through hell and back and probably make her quit. She will last a year or two before transferring.

  11. After reading a couple articles in the Oregon papers, it seems likely that we had very little chance of getting Russell. UT has been her "dream" school for years. UT has the banners that we Cardinal fans feel will be in our future. And UT has developed a number of good post players while Jeff's best players have been guards. I can't blame her for making the decision that she made. We'll still have a great team.

See you at the Yum! tonight.

  12. Yes, welcome Alexis. Our fans seem to have forgotten that until a few years ago none or very few of our players were ranked. Rankings are not everything!

  13. Enjoyed the exhibition game tonight. I continue to be impressed by Hammond and Deines. Hammond really ran the floor well, and Deines just looks like a basketball player. And Mo looked like her old self.

    1. I'll toss Jude Schimmel in also as one who impressed. Let's hope that same Jude shows up against the A&M's and Kentucky's...
