Deines, Walton sign L.O.I's

CARDINAL COUPLE THURSDAY REPORT:

-Deines, Walton send in Letters of Intent to become Lady Cards

-Tickets on sale for Lady Cards @ EKU

-Sandusky's actions at Penn State are way beyond shocking.

The University of Louisville women's basketball team received the two expected letters
of intent for the 2012 recruiting class today when Megan Deines and Cortnee Walton signed
to play for the Cards.

Head coach Jeff Walz had this to say about each:

- On Deines (6'1" guard, Springfield, MO, Glendale H.S.)

"We are excited to have a versatile guard like Megan that has the ability to play all three guards positions. At 6'1", she is a rare commodity that allows a coach the luxury of playing different lineups to take advantages of mis-match opportunities. She is a pinpoint passes and has the penchant for making others around her better. Being a daughter of parents who both played professionally, Megan understands the nuances and particulars that allow a team to sustain excellence. She is a fierce competitor and confidence exudes from her. There is no doubt that she'll be a staple on the perimeter for our team."

Deines was named the Ozark Conference Player of the Year as a junior. She averaged 20 points, six rebounds and five assists a game as a junior. She was also a first team Missouri All-State player last year.

-On Walton (6'3" forward, Surprize, AZ, St. Mary's H.S.)

"Cortnee comes to us from an extremely successful high school team and has proven herself to be a champion on and off the floor. She is a tireless worker and will provide a great presence for us in the paint. She is not afraid of contact and embraces the challenges of physical play in the post. Her ability to pursue the basketball and rebound will no doubt help shore up our inside presence. Cortnee also brings to us immediate leadership abilities and has a willingness to learn and to be coached. She knows no other avenue than success and will continue to elevate our program in the years to come."

Walton is ranked #53 by Hoopgurlz and ranked 11th in her position. She was named honorable mention Arizona All-State her junior year. Her team won the Class 5A Division state title.

Welcome to Louisville, girls!

(CARDINAL COUPLE WRITER JENNY O' BRYAN FILLS US IN ON LADY CARDS
AT EASTERN KY.)

For anyone interested in going to the game, I called the EKU ticket office and ordered my tickets. The game against the Lady Colonels is Thurs., Nov. 17th. at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 each and are general admission. Doors open at 5:30. The person I talked to was very nice. He said that they are going to try and rope off a section behind the UofL bench for Cardinal fans. Just identify yourself when you come into the arena and an usher can show you where to go. (Maybe they should rope off an arena behind their bench and let us fill in the rest of the arena!)

Their arena holds 6000 people. They are more than willing to take your payment over the phone, but he seemed to think that it wasn't really necessary, as they do not expect a sold out game. Got mine anyway, since I'll be arriving close to tip-off and want to make sure I'm in the place if UofL travels with a large fan base.
Phone number is (859) 622-2122 and they are open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The ticket office is located on the west side of the arena.

This is a great chance to see the Lady Cards before they make their season debut in the KFC YUM! Center Sunday, Nov. 20th. against Xavier.

The arena is pretty easy to find once you get off I-75 at the Richmond exit. Just follow the signs to Eastern Kentucky University and the arena is on the south side of campus near the main entrance.

Eastern Kentucky scrimmaged The University of the Cumberlands in an exhibition game November 5th. and won 70-67 in overtime. They'll face Xavier and Lincoln Memorial University before playing UofL.

Most readers have, by now, heard or read about the horrendous path of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and his rape and abuse of underprivileged children. We share this e-mail, forwarded to us, from someone (name withheld) who was a battered child.

"A child's trust in grown-ups and authority is tempered by the results one receives when dealing with the authority. I was a victim of an abusive father, as were my brothers, for 13 years. Finally, my mother, after another trip to the hospital to visit a child who had "fallen down" had had enough and turned the bastard in to the authorities.

To lay in bed at night and be scared that 'Daddy' might come in, reeking of alcohol and try to reach up under my night-shirt or throw one of my brother's up against the wall will haunt me forever. The trauma of those early days is less, now, because I have a loving husband and two beautiful children, but I still wake up in fear sometimes.

Before I met the man who changed my life, I tried drugs, alcohol, lesbianism, violence, counselling and attempted suicide to find relief.  I am forever scarred, but I have recovered. Sometimes, you have to hit bottom before you can bounce back up. I found
religion, peace within and love. Unfortunately, many in my situation never do.

To exploit and abuse an innocent child's trust, to get cheap sexual thrills from a defenseless minor is simply one of the most horrific crimes out there. They should castrate the bastard and turn him loose with a few 'sisters' in a maximum security prison. No amount of ' I'm sorry' or 'forgive me' is sufficient in this case."

  1. I think it's remarkable to see what Walz has accomplished in just five recruiting classes. With his fifth class, he brings in Deines and Walton to replace the two players remaining from his first recruiting class, Burke and Reid. Without commenting on Tay, who is academically inelligible, everyone else in classes two, three, and four is rock solid. And so, with this fifth class, Walz isn't rebuilding - he's reloading and doing a phenomenal job. BTW, I think I'm somewhat objective in giving Walz this praise. I'm not really a Cards fan - I'm just on the Schimmel bandwagon for the next few years.

  2. Thanks for checking in Phil. We know how the past couple of years have gone with Louisville getting a couple of late signees each year and wouldn't surprise us if the same happens next spring.
