Field Hockey drops to Villanova...Women's Tennis wins in doubles...Football folds late

.
CARDINAL COUPLE SUNDAY

-Thomas scores in 2-1 loss to Villanova

-Velasquez and Harris advance in Ohio Valley Regional

-Football gets its kicks, can't cross the goal line.

-Baby I'm a Star showcases Angel.

Justine Sowry's UofL field hockey team actually out-shot the Wildcats yesterday 11-7 but when it came to scores...Nova's Olivia Maggitti out-dueled Amber Thomas 2-1 yesterday at Villanova. The Wildcat defense held the Cards scoreless until the final minute of the contest...while finding the net once in the first half and again in the second half to knock the Cards to 8-6 on he season and 2-3 in BIG EAST play. With the win, Nova goes to 6-10 and 2-2 in the conference.

"This was a disappointing result but Villanova was the better team today" -Justine Sowry.

The Cards with a quick turnaround...they face Drexel today in the Quaker State.

UofL women's tennis doubles partners Amelia Harris and Manuela Velazquez advanced to the sweet sixteen in the Ohio Valley regionals yesterday with two wins in the event at
Memphis.

The duo knocked off Memphis's Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray 9-7. They also put away Purdue's Jenny Rabot and Mara Schmidt..who the #2 seed in the regional.

They'll tangle with a couple of Wildcats today...facing UK's Edmee Morin and Stephanie Fox.

Harris is a senior from New Zealand and Velazquez a freshman from New York. The Cards have eight players on the roster...including sophomores Rebecca Shine and Julia Fellerhoff. None of them are from the Louisville area.

Charlie Strong's football Cards got three field goals from place-kicker Chris Philpott and an electrifying 63 yard interception for a touchdown out of Mike Evans...but couldn't hold off Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead in the second half and fell 25-16 to the Bearcats in Paul Brown Stadium.

It was a perfect afternoon for football and the Cards looked like they were headed for the upset until Pead broke one early in the fourth quarter for 50 yards and the go-ahead score. Louisville with three chances to score touchdowns in the red-zone but had to settle for field goals each time. Louisville has not scored an offensive touchdown in 10 quarters.

Pead ran for 151 yards against the Cards as the Bearcats keep the Keg of Nails for the 4th consecutive time. Seems like he's been at UC since the nineties.

Jones led UC to the 1992 Final Four
Speaking of the nineties...CARDINAL COUPLE ran into former UC men's basketball star Herb Jones during halftime.

Herb was the leading scorer and rebounder on Bobby Huggins' teams in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Generously listed at 6'4"...Jones was a tough-as-nails rebounder and inside threat for the Bearcats back then and gave the Cards and Coach Denny Crum headaches in those old Metro Conference battles.

Jones works in concessions management now in Cincinnati and talked fondly about those visits to Freedom Hall to battle against LaBradford Smith, Dwayne Morton and Greg Minor.
He also works with AAU and Club basketball in the Cincinnati area and still dons the shoes and plays a couple of times a week. If you happen to attend a Bengals football game, you'll find Herb outside the Club Level seats near section 204.

"Those were some great days back then. We made to the Final Four in Minneapolis my senior year and that was very exciting...but those games against UofL in a noisy and packed Freedom Hall are things I'll always remember." Jones told us. "I haven't made it down there to see the YUM! Center yet...but from what I've seen on TV...it looks like a great place to play in or just watch a game."

Angel McCoughtry is known for her cross-over and high scoring capabilities. Did you know she also possesses a wonderful singing voice? You can purchase her single "Baby I'm a Star" from iTunes. You should. It's a great song and reminds us of Beyonce. Don't confuse it with Prince's song with the same name from the 80's. Angel's is different and...quite frankly...better.

We can't let you listen to it here because of copyright issues but you can find it and purchase it for a mere 99 cents from iTunes.

This needs to be a regular part of the music mix during Lady Cards basketball games in the KFC YUM! Center. Spread the word...Angel soars high with her impeccable vocals. As regular reader Mark Schneider (who discovered the gem and passed it on to us) says:

"I can see Cierra and Asia dancing to this now."

(And those two can definitely dance...)
