USA women beat Germany 87-68
Are you having as much fun watching this 2024 USA Olympic Women's basketball team as the Cardinal Couple crew is? And, while it's true that none of them played for Louisville or Jeff Walz, just a look at the roster shows plenty of the girls battled vs. Walz squads in college. How many of the 12 can you come up with that played against UofL in the college days? I got 10 at first look, not even researchng. . And Jackie Young hails from Princeton, IN...just two hours away from the "Ville".
Normally, when you think of 12 WNBA players on the USA roster playing the rest of the world in the Olympics, one of your first thoughts is "I bet they score a bunch". And, defense probably doesn't come to mind immediately.However...Tuesday featured a USA squad that won their 58th stright game in a row with a defense that the legendary Jim Boeheim and his 2/3 zone would have been proud of.
And, head coach Cheryl Reeve, not seeing exactly what she wanted out of the normal starters, turned to the bench in the second half for the pull-away win. It was Sabrina Ionescu, Jewell Loyd, Brit Griner, Alyssa Thomas and Jackie Young creating the turnovers, getting the buckets and getting the deflections, steals and creating the tournovers...Germany had 23 turnovers and had the ball stolen 12 times.
The second leading scorer in the Olympics so far...Germany's Satou Sabally...who plays for Dallas in the WNBA, was held to 15 points, a far cry from her 25 per game average. Alexis Peterson, who played for Syracuse, had 14 points for the German squad.
The USA had 25 assists and held Germany to 14. They also hit nine of their 23 three point attempts for 43%. USA was strong on the boards, with 42 rebounds, and held Germany to 32.
USA moves to the quarterfinals to play Nigeria. Other games are Spain vs. Belgium, France gets Germany and Serbia will face Australia. USA was 3-0 in Group C Pool play, with wins over Japan and Belgium and yesterday's win over Germany
