ACC Softball Tournament Field Set -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Just Miss Bye in ACC Tourney

Louisville's loss at NC State on Saturday was a big one, as they ultimately finished in a three-way tie with Virginia Tech and Stanford, which saw them come out on the wrong end of the deal. The Cards dropped to fifth in the conference, narrowly missing the bye awarded to the top four teams. As a result, Louisville will get a fourth straight game against the Wolfpack tomorrow afternoon.

Florida State leads the field, which is made up of the top-12 teams in the league. NC State could have done Louisville a solid and taken a dive over the weekend, as they made it in over Cal by two games, meaning they still would have been in with a loss on Saturday. Nevertheless, the Cards line up as the five seed across from the 12-seed Wolfpack. Duke was the second team in the league, finishing one game behind FSU at 20-4. VT took third and Stanford was fourth to round out the byes. The winner of Louisville/NC State will face Stanford in the second round.

FSU will take on the winner of the 8/9 game, which pits Notre Dame against Georgia Tech. That will be the first game of the tournament, which has first pitch at 11am on Wednesday. All of the tournament games will be on ACC Network, with the championship airing on ESPN on Saturday. The Cards will play game two on Wednesday at 1:30PM.

Following the afternoon break, 7-seed Clemson takes on 10-seed UNC at 5PM. Clemson was the last team in the league to finish above .500 at 13-11. The last game of the day will be Virginia (13-10) taking on Pittsburgh.

In the single elimination format, anything can happen. All of the lower ranked teams will be looking to extend their season as much as possible, potentially even stealing a bid to the NCAA tournament. Louisville and it's compatriots will be looking to protect or improve their seeding in the tournament. Louisville would likely need to win the ACC to host a regional, but stranger things have happened.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Despines big blast helps Cards down WolfPack 8-3 -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THREE RUN BLAST IN SIXTH INNING HELPS CARDS SECURE REGULAR SEASON ENDING WIN

Nothing like ending the regular seaso with a win. And a road win,as well.

Pretty Bri...

After defeating NC State 8-3 Sunday...looks like these two will face again,  in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday in Durham. Case will have a more detailed breakdown of the tournament in his Tuesday article..for now...just know their re-match will be the fifth and twelfth place elimination game. Louisville was one of three teams, at 18-6 and tid for third, but was placed fifth due to a formula only Einstein could probably decipher.

The Cards took control of the ballgame in the top of the third inning with a five run explosion. That came after the squads were scoreless in the first two innings. Chelsea Mack, Easton Lotus and Bri Despnes loaded the bases with no outs and Carmyn Lookadoo doubled to bring home Mack and Lotus. Madison Pickens got on with a walk and Taylor Monroe walked, forcing in a third run. Jordan Williams singled home Lookadoo and Pickens scored from third on a throw out of Williams trying to steal second.  It was 5-0 Cards and that turned out to be all the Cards would need for the win, of course...not knowing that at the time.

The Pack would counter with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Cards hurler Alyssa Zabala (who I have nicknamed "Smiley") was in control in the circle and went four innings...picking up her 14th win of the season...allowing just one run.

The Cards posted their three runs in the top of the sixth inning .  Mack reached on an error and Lotus singled. They came home on Despines second home run of the series.

NCSU would pick up two more runs, off Brooke Gray but never got any closer that the 5-3 score at the end of five innings. They ended up with six hits on the afternoon and Louisville got 10 hits to go with their eight runs.

Softball falls to NC State 10-6 Saturday -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 WOLFPACK JUMPS ON BIRDS EARLY

Brooke Gray has been a very good pitcher for UofL Softball this season. Yesterday's game, though, probably won't be one she'll go back to fondly in her memory banks. The NC State diamond dwellers (27-24, 7-15) jumped on Gray and the Cards for seven runs in the first two innings and held on to take a 10-6 win over Louisville (42-11, 17-6) to even up the series at one game each.

NCST (or NCSU...since the school  really hates seeing NCST used...they say they are North Carolina State University...so they say use NCSU since that is the appropriate shortening of the name. An old-timer like me has called them NCST since the days of Deb Antonelli prowling the hardwood and Jim Valvano winning the NCAA Championship...so , old habits are hard to break. Hank Williams, Jr sang about old habits in his 1980 smash hit..Old Habits. You can hear it below:

Old Habits

The song has a lot of personal meaning to me, since it came around at a time I was going through a break up with what was probably the first true love of my life. Anyway..I digress, let's get back to the game..if we have to...

Louisville remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. They sandwiched a few singles around a Camry Lookadoo four bagger to make it 7-4.  Taylor Monroe homered in the inning as well

The Pack (I like that nickname for them) would see the Cards add two runs to their total in the top of the sixth...when two on base scored on an NCSU wild pitch. That made it 7-6 and the Cards were rallying...but the Raleigh school effectively shut the door when they got a three run homer out of Kendall Simmons in the bottom of the sixth to deep left to make it 10-6. And, that concluded the scoring.

They'll finish the series today at 1 p.m.  ACCNX will show the event.

                                                     ***********************************

So...how did your Derby Day turn out? I watched our local coverage here in Louisville and the network hoopla while also betting on twinspires.com. WAVE gets better each year with their production, but the network is losing Donna Barton Brothers after this year and that is a shame. She rode, she knows the jockeys, trainers, owners and the in's and out's of Churchill Downs...as well as many other tracks. I remember her from when she was riding 30-1 long shot up at the old Latonia (now Turfway) Race Track. Gonna be a tough act to replace. On the betting angles, yeah, I know...RunHappy ran happy for about a mile and then folded like a cheap suit. Glad Jose Ortiz finally got a Derby win...beating his brother Irad...when he brought Golden Tempo from last to first with a furious stretch drive, passing Renegade and winning the Run For The Roses. Nice to see Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi doing the National Anthem, too. I first got turned on to Trucks (the son of Allman Brothers legend Butch Trucks)  when he was playing with Warren Haynes...two great guitarists.

23-1 odds. Woulda been nice...should have handicapped twice, right? Still , I cleaned up on the early card and final two races to end up about $150 ahead on the day. That'll come in handy to lose on the Preakness and Belmont...A year where I stayed away from Derby parties, Churchill Downs or any off-track betting and played the races through TwinSpires.com. It was relaxing and think it'll be the way to go from now on.

Derby Day in the Ville -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Happy Derby Day!

Despite the strange decision to move Oaks under the lights, Derby season has still been a good one this year. After last year's canceled Thunder Over Louisville, things seemed off all through the buildup. This year isn't without its own oddities on the first Saturday in May. The cold front that barreled into town sets Louisville up to see just its third recorded Derby Day under 60 degrees. This year's Derby also looks to see a high temperature lower than the recorded high on Christmas 2025. Strange indeed.

Nevertheless, it should still be a nice day, as long as you dress a bit warmer than usual. The clouds will be off and on, much like yesterday, and it looks like the wind is calming with rain likely to stay away until after the final post of the evening. There's a long time to make a selection before bets are closed, but I like Danon Bourbon so far. Paulie has posted in multiple outlet he is backing So Happy.

On the Louisville sports front, the Cards softball squad took care of business against NC State in game one of their series, winning 5-1. Alyssa Zabala earned the win in her third complete game of the season and Louisville scored primarily on small ball. The Cards' only extra base hit came off the bat of Bri Despines when she hit a home run in the fourth inning.

The Cards and Wolfpack are back in action today at 6PM. Virginia Tech won their first game against Syracuse yesterday, so Louisville needs to keep winning to hold onto their bye.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Softball Cards Head to NC State for final regular season series -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

41-10 CARDS HEAD TO RALEIGH TO FACE WOLFPACK

As the ACC Softball Tournament looms ahead, the Softball Cards will end the regular season with three games in Raleigh against the NCST Softball squad.

It is senior weekend for NC State and they'll say "farewell and good luck" to nine seniors. The first game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Friday and...if you need a break from Oaks coverage, it'll be shown on ACCNX.

The Pack is 26-23 on the season overall, but a dismal 6-14 in  ACC play. They played East Carolina last time out and romped the Pirates 10-2 in five innings. Before that, it was a trip to Virginia, where they lost three to the Cavs. They lost three in a row to Stanford before that...and they are 12th in the league and the ACC Softball tournament is a 12-team tournament. Syracuse is right behind them at 4-15, but the Orange have Virginia Tech coming to town, and the Hokies are in fifth place at 15-6 in ACC play and will be hoping to win all three and hope they can get into the top four in league standings and get a first round bye.

NC State is led by Mala Townsend at the plate...who is batting .358. Morgen Talley is 13-8 from the circle and Lily Livingston has 12 home runs.

I have had some people asking me who I like in the Kentucky Oaks today and I am going with PROM QUEEN. That stretch run in the Gulfstream Park Oaks was impressive and the filly is only getting stronger. You might also watch Percy's Bar (where I spent a lot of time in my track-going days) . Happy Oaks Day to ya, hve a lily for the fillies!

ACC Softball Tournament Looms -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

12 TEAMS WILL MEET IN CHARLOTTESVLLE MAY 6-9

The top 12 finishers in the ACC Softball standings will meet in Charlottesville, VA (where the University of Virginia is) for the 2026 ACC Softball Tournament. Palmer Park, where the games will commence, is pictured below. We haven't done a Cardinal Couple quiz in forever...so here is your question, readers. Who was Palmer Park named after?

A). Arnold Palmer - famous golfer.                                                                                                  B). Lisa Palmer - pitcher at UVA 1986-1989.                                                                                  C). Palmer Luckey -- American entrepreneur.                                                                                D). Jim Palmer -- Hall of Fame Pitcher with Baltimore Orioles.

(Answer at the end of today's article)

As of today, these 12 teams are "in" (subject to change, of course, as the regular season has a wee bit more softball left:

1) FSU-- The Noles sit atop the ACC with a 18-3 record in league play. They finish the season with three at Boston College beginning tomorrow.

2) Duke -- The Blue Devils are done with ACC regular season play and went 20-4. They probably wish they would have not dropped one last week down at Clemson. They need FSU to lose one at Boston and force a tie. FSU and Duke did not play during the season against each other, sothe tie-breaker, if it happens, could involve a bunch of factors I never fully seem to understand ,

3) Louisville -- Holly Aprile's Birds are currently 16-5 in the ACC. The best they could finish in regular season is second, providing they win all the final games against NC State and FSU loses all three to B.C. As Princess Anne said to her assailant, back in 1974, during the failed kidnap attempt..."Not bloody likely"

4) Stanford -- At 18-6 in ACC play, the Trees are landlocked into fourth, unless the Cards lose two against NC State.

The rest of the league standings:

In fifth is Virginia Tech, currently at 15-6. They finish against Syracuse at Syracuse. Sixth is Virginia, owners of a 13-10 conference slate. They are done, having one conference game cancelled against Syracuse bac in March. Seventh belongs to Clemson (13-11). Eighth currently goes to Notre Dame (11-13). The top four get a first round bye.  In ninth place is Ga. Tech (10-14), tenth sees North Carolina (9-15), 11th is Pitt and in the nervous spot is NC State (6-14). If Syracuse could win all three games against Va Tech, they could sneak into the tournament and send the Gobblers home.. Boston College and California are tied for the bottom spot at 3-18.

We'll have coverage of the action here and wish the Softball Cards the best of luck.

(Your quiz answer is"B",,, Lisa Palmer...she had 74 wins for the Cavs, the best in school history.)

An interesting Volleyball look -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

NO LOUISVILLE PLAYERS ON UofL VB ROSTER

One thing we've come to expect over the years is the presence of at least one Volleyball player on the UofL roster from the city of Louisville. An early look at the UofL roster for 2026-27, though, indicates no Louisvillians on Dan Meske's roster this season.

There is one Kentuckian...senior libero Kamden Schrand, from Notre Dame Academy, up in Villa Hills...near Cincinnati. And the Queen City, across the Ohio River from Covington,  has a bit of representation of student-athletes on the Cardinals squad. Jessica Drapp, a senior defensive specialist...Brooke Bultema, a junior middle blocker. Our neighbor to the north..Indiana...has sent Ava Utterback, out of Plainfield, Addison Makun, from Silver Creek H.S. in Charlestown, Chloe Chicoine, from Lafayette, Molly Urban (Martinsville) and Elle Strecker from Zionsville.

Volleyball is a ways off...due to start for the VolleyCards in Sept. with the Cards facing Missouri in the annual ACC/SEC challenge in the L&N Federal Credit Union on campus on Sept 9th.

It'll be interesting to see how our coverage goes this year for the wide net sport. with Jeff McAdams and Jared Anderson no longer on the Cardinal Couple writing staff...most of our volleyball knowledge left with them. We're hoping Jeff can get his Wide Net Cards running by September. Jared will be there shooting games but is prohibited from send us any pictures.

I was talking with another writer of college sports, at  different University, recently and the subject came up about UofL banning me from games because my Twitter account got hacked. I explained to her that I had left Twitter to appease the media department at UofL, but they still won't let me interview players or coaches or grant me a media pass. This other writer found that unbelievable. As she told me..."Paul, I have been reading your site for years and if UofL can't recognize all the publicity you give them for women's,sports...at a free site....I'm glad I don't write for them."

Life has it's mysteries, don't it?

Happy Derby Week to you, Here in Louisville, we get the annual Great Steamboat Race today.  Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati on the Ohio River.

Softball to Vie for Tourney Bye -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Look to Cling to Top-4 Seed

Louisville softball is coming off another sweep over the weekend, putting them at 16-5 in conference play. They're 6-1 in conference series this season and have three sweeps. Louisville has lucked out a bit, as they  avoided the top of the league in their schedule. Louisville did not have to play FSU, Duke, Virginia Tech, or Virginia, the other four teams in the top six of the league. The Cards did take care of business in their only competition against the top six, defeating Stanford in two of three games. While they did lose a series, that one came against the only other team in the league above .500 in Clemson.

The Cardinals currently find themselves in third place in the league, behind FSU and Duke. They're ahead of Stanford on the merit of win percentage, though just barely. The Cardinal are 18-6 and will be idle in ACC play this weekend. It'll be a scrap for the final bye slot, with Louisville at 16-5 and Virginia Tech at 15-6. VT is at Syracuse, and we all just saw how that went over the weekend. Assuming a sweep from the Hokies, Louisville will need to win two in Raleigh to force a three-way tie. The Cards can avoid that with a sweep of their own. That would give them an advantage over both opponents and leave VT and Stanford to fight amongst themselves.

Fortunately for Louisville, their weekend opponent is also struggling. NC State is 6-14 on the year, and they've been swept in two straight series against Stanford and Virginia. They swept Cal the weekend before, but the Bears are last in the league. The Wolfpack have a get-right game tonight against East Carolina, which is the return game of a home-and-home series. NC State beat the Pirates in Greenville in nine innings earlier this month.

Louisville has had a stellar season so far this year. A pair of wins would be ideal, but one win would give the Cards their best conference season since 2023. Two wins would net Louisville their best season since 2013. Back then, Sandy Pearsall's Cards went 47-13 (18-4) in the Big East. That was coming off of their best season ever, when Louisville went 55-5 (20-2) in 2012. All that is to say, 41-13 would still be good, but 44-10 would be even better. There is still a lot to do in the postseason, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Louisville is off in the midweek, but they'll get their final regular season series of the year underway at 7PM on Oaks Day. The ACC Championship will start on Wednesday, May 6th.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Suns out, runs out...Softball Cards decimate Syracuse 13-7

27 hits, 20 runs between Louisville and Syracuse Sunday

Ava Venturelli  -- Two Home runs

You could call it a slugfest. Maybe a hitting frenzy. Or use your own term. Louisville and Syracuse were putting the ball over fences and where there were no gloves on Sunday in a fun game to view out at Ulmer Stadium on ACCNX.

A beautiful day for softball and the conditions were maybe perfect softball playing weather.  The Cards scored in every one of the seven innings and Ava Venturelli went three for four, had two home runs and drove in four runs. Venturelli, a junior from Taunton, Massachusetts, was batting eighth in the Cardinals order..but that didn't stop her from having what I'd call a player of the game effort

UofL was up 7-0 after three innings and one had to wonder if this just might be a run-rule ending...but Syracuse finally got there bats unleased and touched UofL for four runs in the top of the fourth when Madison Knight went over the fence. night had a second home run in the top of the fourth inning to set the score at 7-6...but the Cards responded with three runs to make it 10-6.

Brooke Gray got the win for Louisville and is now an incredible 13-1 on the season. Venturelli's second homer made it 13-7 after five innings.

It's truly a shame no one does post game interviews out there anymore with Coach Aprile or the players. I thought that I used to do a good job of them...but the media influences at UofL shut me down and bullied my former photographer into disassociating himself with me.  Imagine all the dangers a 70 yr old man with kidney failure and no hope of transplant could afflict, right?

The Cards go back into action on May 1st with a three game serie at NC State.

Reeves dominates Syracuse Saturday -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

CARDS SOFTBALL CURTAILS ORANGE 5-1 SATURDAY

When Madi Reeves is "on"..she's "on"

The junior from Yorkville, Illinois started her college softball at Miami University (OH) and had two pretty successful seasons there. As a freshman,  she went 22-4 and was named the MAC Freshman of the Year.  She was 24-12 her sophomore year and named to the M.A.C. First team. She also beat UNC in the NCAA Tournament last year.

Holly Aprile saw a lot to like there and wen after her. Reeves wanted a step up in competition , a chance for new opportunities and growth and her nation-leading innings pitched showed Aprile she was a quality pitcher that just might fit in well in the ACC and her program.

With the complete game win, Reeves went to 4-1 on the season and the Cards got their 40th win of the season...to go to 40-10.

Louisville jumped out early 2- 0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chelsea Mack and Easton Lotus started the game with singles. Two fly outs advanced Mack to home and then Madison Pickens singled home Lotus to make it 2-0 Cards.

The next four innings were scoreless. Syracuse would make it 2-1 in the top of the sixth but Louisville responded well in the bottom of the sixth when Despines took first after getting hit by a pitch, stole second and Lookadoo drew a walk. A Pickens single scored Despines and then Venturelli singled to the center field wall and drove home Pickens and Lookadoo to make it 5-1.

Reeves allowed just six hits for her second complete game of the season. Louisville now has a seven game win streak and is two games back of league leading FSU. Duke, with three more conference games than those two..is in second by percentage at 9-4 in the ACC.

The Cards and Orange will face again Sunday at noon. It'll be on ACCNX if you can't make it out to the ball park.

Louisville Run Rule Beats Rain -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Cards Thump Cuse 13-5

When you see a final score of 13-5, you might think one team teed off on the other for most of the game. If I told you a team led 5-0, you'd probably say "Yeah, that tracks." What might surprise you is that it was Syracuse who led 5-0, and they did so in the middle of the fifth inning. Louisville scored ten runs in the bottom of the tenth and walked off the game in the bottom of the sixth with a run-rule. The Cards needed those runs, as the game was moved up to beat the rain, and Louisville couldn't afford to extend into the weather or lose a game to Syracuse. The Orange are now just 18-21 (4-13) on the season.

Alyssa Zabala got the start yesterday, and the ball was flying in Ulmer Stadium. After two quick outs, Zabala gave up a double and a two-run homer followed to give the Orange a lead in the opening frame. The Cards went 1-2-3 in the bottom half and that was that. Louisville had a chance in the second following a one-out double that saw Madison Pickens end up on third when she advanced on the throw. Unfortunately, she lost the race to the plate on the next ground ball when the shortstop came home instead of getting the out at first. Syracuse hit another two-out home run in the top of the third, and Alyssa Zabala's day ended after she got the final out of the inning.

Louisville followed going down 3-0 with another 1-2-3 inning and things were beginning to look a little grim for the Cards. Anna Wise replaced Zabala in the fourth, but gave up a double to open her day. She got a strikeout and used two ground outs to get out of the inning, but she was relieved after her first batter of the fifth. A single opened the fifth and it was clear that Wise wasn't missing too many bats. Before that, though, Louisville showed signs of life again in the bottom of the fourth. Bri Despines walked to open the inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and reached third on a productive ground out. With Pickens at the plate, Syracuse chose to intentionally walk her to give them a double-play opportunity. Jordan Williams obliged, hitting it to the short stop, but Pickens reached second anyway. Despines held at third and Louisville had two in scoring position with two outs. They failed to score once more.

When Brooke Gray replaced Wise in the top of the fifth, she got off to an inauspicious start as well. A four-pitch walk put runners on first and second with nobody out. A single loaded the bases and a sac fly scored a run. Another walk reloaded the bases and another sac fly made the score 5-0. After a steal put two runners back into scoring position, Gray finally got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Enter the Louisville offense. The Cards opened the inning with a strikeout, but then proceeded to put ten straight batters on base. Louisville went walk, bunt single, walk, Despines grand slam (5-4), HBP, single, single (5-5), double (7-5), double (8-5), and walk before Syracuse finally got the second out of the inning. You may have noticed a discontinuity in the scoring. That's because Louisville broke the 5-5 tie with a double steal of second and home. They were feeling it. The second out was a sacrifice fly, extending the Cards' lead to 9-5, but they still weren't done. Easton Lotus laid down a bunt single, and then Louisville executed another double steal to make it 10-5. Lotus stole third as well, but Syracuse finally got out of the nightmare inning with a ground out.

With the lead, Gray settled in and sat the Syracuse batters down in short order, giving up a two-out single but being relatively unbothered. After the offense took over and the pitching let the Orange down a bit, their defense stumbled in the bottom of the sixth. Camryn Lookadoo started the inning with a grounder to first, but it was booted and the error put her on base. Madison Pickens laid down a bunt, which was scored a hit, but Syracuse's 3B tried to get the out anyway and earned a throwing error to move the runners into scoring position. Jordan Williams walked to load the bases with nobody out. Syracuse got the first out of the inning on a foul out, but the game would end on yet another error. Ava Venturelli singled to center to score a pair, and the charging center fielder was unable to come up with it cleanly, allowing Williams to come home as well and completing the run rule.

Thirteen straight runs is great, but Louisville probably can't depend on that in every game. They'll get another chance to win in a more normal game today when the Cards and Orange compete for game two of the series. That one will be at 1PM on ACCNX. The rain should be done, so head down to Ulmer for Louisville's penultimate home game if you're feeling up for it.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Syracuse Softball comes to town to play Cards -- Friday Cardinal Couple

 SYRACUSE SOFTBALL HEADS TO ULMER

Jayden Burney -- Syracuse

Louisville Softball (38-10, 13-5) goes into the weekend series with a change already in the schedule. The Friday game had been moved up to a 4 p.m. start time because of expected rain in the area later tonight.

The Orange are not a powerhouse in the ACC, with a 4-12 conference record and a 18-20 overall record. SU has had 10 games cancelled this year, mostly because of rain or other unfavorable weather conditions. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games but lost 9 of their first 10 ACC contests.

Jadyn Burney leads the way at the plate for the Orange with a .320 batting average in 37 games. Burney began her college career at Mississippi State before transferring to "the Cuse". Madison Knight is the "slugger" on the squad with 13 home runs and eight double and 35 RBI's .

Knight is the only pitcher with a winning record on the squad at 10-7. She;s a senior on the roster and has thrown 105 innings...allowing 110 hits. Syracuse also uses Julianna Verni in the circle...she is 5-10 on the season.

Syracuse is 10-26 against the Cards in the overall series...last time out, on April 1st last year the Cards won 5-3.

An interesting sideline...Otto the Orange, the Syracuse mascot, was official deemed as such in 1978. Before that, SU was known as the Saltines and called the Saltine Warriors. Syracuse was known as "Salt City" because of the extracting of salt from the springs near Onondaga Lake.

Softball Cats dump Cards 12-8 in 10 innings -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FOUR RUN 10TH INNING GIVE CATS WIN IN ULMER.

I don't normally talk a whole lot about a Louisville Softball loss and that'll be the case again for this article. In a hit-fest, especially for the Cats...Kentucky gets the 12-8 win in Louisville on a Wednesday night in Ulmer Stadium..

Louisville had this one in hand early, with a 7-2 lead after two innings but could only muster one more run in the next eight innings...and nothing seemed to go right for the Cards in the 10th inning.

UK was a hit machine in Ulmer Wednesday, with 25 of them...and had two homers against five different Louisville pitchers. Alyssa Zabala got tagged with the loss, she actually made two appearances in the game...starting and relieving late....and UK gets over .500 at 26-25.

Louisville led 8-7 after six innings, but the Cats were able to tie it up to force the bonus softball.

The Cards had 12 hits to go with their eight runs, and will now wait for their weekend series with Syracuse in Ulmer before ending the season with a series at NC State.

Softball Cards move to 25th in D1 poll -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE SOFTBALL MOVES TO 25TH IN D1 SOFTBALL POLL

Louisville softball (38-9) has reach a new pinnacle this season. The Cards are 25th in the NCAA D1 poll. It is their first top 25 ranking of the season.

Louisville is one of five ACC schools in the top 25. Duke comes in at 13th, Virginia Tech is 16th, Stanford is 20th and  Clemson is 24th .

The Cards step out of conference play today with a game against in-state rival Kentucky. The Cats are 25-25 on the season and a dismal 1-20 in the SEC this season. The two played earlier in the season, at Lexington, and Louisville won a 8-7 thriller over the Cats.

Game time is Ulmer is 6 p.m.it's at Ulmer Stadium and it will be shown on the ACC Network.

The Cards swept their series with Pitt last time out and set a few records in the process.

-- Chelsea Mack became the new record holder for most stolen bases by a Cardinals softball player with 37. Wise advice for any opposing catchers might be.."Don't turn your back on Chelsea Mack"

-- Crossing Jordan? Not lately. Jordan Williams has hit safely in the last 19 games. That's also a Cardinals team record.

-- Who's that girl on base? Why it's Easton Lotus! She has reached base safely in her last 40 games. She sets a new Cardinals record each time she gets on.

We'll be following on the ACCNX and have a full report on it tomorrow.

Today is Earth Day. Do something nice for our planet today.  It's also Jelly Bean Day. Have some jelly beans while you're dong that nice thing.

Cards Set for Final Homestand -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Softball Faces UK and Syracuse at Ulmer This Week

Louisville softball is coming off a stellar weekend, as Paulie mentioned yesterday after they wrapped up another run-rule over Pittsburgh. The Cards have just four home games remaining on the calendar, with those all coming this week.

It's rivalry week for the diamond sports, as Louisville baseball and softball will both welcome the Wildcats to town this week. Baseball will be tonight at 7 with softball facing off against the SEC squad tomorrow at 6. The Cards won the first matchup of the season in Lexington just about a month ago, taking an exciting 8-7 comeback win over the Cats in nine innings. Louisville scored three runs in the top of the seventh on March 25th to force extra innings.

UK has not had a great time since then, as the Cats have been in the midst of an abysmal run in SEC play. UK opened their SEC season with a win over Auburn on March 6th. They have not won a conference game since and sit at 1-20 in league play. UK is 24-5 in non-conference games, which gives an indication of how strong their SEC schedule has been.  They have a win over #13 Stanford, and they have not lost a non-conference game (other than the first outing against Louisville) since a 9-0 defeat against #15 Oregon on Valentine's Day. Louisville certainly shouldn't take this game for granted.

After the Cats, Louisville brings in Syracuse for their final scheduled home weekend of the season. The Orange are just 17-19 overall this season and just 4-12 in conference play. They have had a handful of games canceled, as you might suspect from an outdoor spring sport in Syracuse, New York, but they have managed to win one series. They beat Boston College in two out of three games. Their other two wins are against Pitt and Notre Dame. The Orange will play a double header today in Buffalo before heading to Louisville.

After this weekend, the Cards hit the road for the final series of the regular season against NC State. The Wolfpack are 6-11 in conference play, so that should be another chance, along with this weekend, for Louisville to pick up a few more wins. As it stands, Louisville is third in the ACC behind Duke (18-3) and FSU (15-3). The Cards (13-5) are narrowly ahead of Stanford (15-6) on win percentage. Louisville will need to score a handful of wins (six would be nice) over the next two weekends to stay in the top four seeds of the ACC tournament, as Virginia Tech looms at 12-6 and has UNC at home this weekend with Syracuse on the road to close. The ACC Championship will be in Charlottesville May 6 through May 9.

The Cards will need an almighty end to the season (plus a bit of luck) to earn the chance to return to Ulmer after this weekend. A top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament would mean Louisville would host a regional round, but there is a lot of ground to cover for that to happen. The Cards are currently 32nd in NCAA RPI. Duke is the highest rated ACC team, and they're just 13th. Even a stunning run to the ACC Championship would make it difficult for the Cards to climb that high.

Nevertheless, Louisville is having a great season, and not being one of 16 regional hosts won't take the shine off of that. All the Cards can do is take care of business and finish the season strong. The rest will take care of itself.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Cards Softball run rules Pitt again for a series sweep -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE.

14-0 IN FIVE INNING CARDINALS WIN OVER PITT

Louisville softball had a nine-run third inning and held Pitt to two hits in their Sunday win over the visiting Panthers out at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards posted 11 hits and got a grand slam home run in the contest from Bri Despines.

With the win , Louisville goes to 38-9 on the season and 13-5 in the ACC. It puts them in third place in the conference. Duke is 18-3 in the league, FSU checks in at second at 15-3 and the Cards are at 13-5   The ACC teams play 24 conference games.

The Cards used three pitchers in the contest, Alyssa Zabala getting the start and going three innings. The win puts her a 12-4 on the season. Anna Wise and Jayden Gohs each saw a inning of relief for UofL.

At 38-9, the season is quite a turnaround from last year, when the Cards went 26-25 overall, The Louisville pitching staff has done quite well for themselves and the team...Zabala at 12-4.

Louisville's win streak is now at six..the Cards go out of conference to face Kentucky at Ulmer on Wednesday at 6 p.m. It'll be on ACCNX if you can't make it out there.

WBB welcomes Prawl to check out the program -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FORMER FIVE STAR RECRUIT HEADED TO CARDS

She was a high prized recruit coming out of high school last year and the Tennessee Vols ended up getting her. After one year in Knoxville, though, Deniya Prawl has decided to seek playing time elsewhere and has said she's transferring to Louisville WBB on Thunder weekend.

Prawl was a sometime starter at UT her freshman year and was the #6 prospect in 2025, according to sources. She was recruited by South Carolina, UCLA, Notre Dame, Baylor, Duke and Louisville before choosing UT. At UT, she averaged 4.0 a game and 2.7  rebounds. She was considered a wing at UT, the 6'3" Prawl will be a key get for the Cards..Louisville is losing Isla Juffermans, Anaya Hardy and Peyton Bradley to the transfer portal.

Not that the Cards have a bare cupboard, though, going into next year.  Announcing they are returning are Taj Roberts, Mackenly Randolph, Elif Istanbulluoglu, Imani Berry and Grace Mbugna. As Jeff Walz enters his 20th yr. as the Cards head coach, this potential powerhouse roster could give Walz something he hasn't acquired in his time here...a national championship.

Walz also has three very talented high school seniors coming on campus. Peanut Cradle, Myah Epps and Ayse Melek Demirer. Carys Baker, out of Va. Tech and Zam Jones, from NC State are also UofL WBB bound.

Cards Get Double-Header Run Rules -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Softball Sweeps Friday Against Pitt

Happy Thunder Day! The weather is looking less than stellar today, but the rain should stop before we move into the evening. It'll be soggy, but at least the fireworks show should go off this year. Yesterday's practice might have been your better opportunity for a good airshow experience though. The Louisville Bats announced they were moving today's first pitch from 2:05 to 1:05 because of the weather, but I'm not sure that will help them. Louisville softball pulled a lever the Bats didn't really have available, as they moved their Saturday game to a Friday double-header.

With the revised schedule, the Cards promptly thumped the Pittsburgh Panthers in a pair of games that finished with a combined score of 19-3 and took just ten innings. Louisville was clicking on offense, and Pitt had no real answers for Alyssa Zabala or Brooke Gray in the circle. Louisville extended their current winning streak to five games and secured their fourth straight series, taking them to 4-1 in ACC series. Their lone ACC series loss came on the road at Clemson in mid-March.

Zabala took the circle to open the first game and sat the Panthers down in order. That would be indicative of how she'd treat them for the remainder of her outing, as she went four full innings and gave up three hits and one walk while striking out four. She threw just 64 pitches, averaging four per batter faced. Jayden Gohs was handed the ball for the fifth inning, although Louisville wasn't quite in run-rule territory yet, as it was just 6-0. The defense gave up a runner on an error and she advanced to second. A single put runners on the corners, and then Pitt executed a rare softball double steal. Gohs was credited with allowing an unearned run, but she got out of the inning with the score 6-1.

Louisville's offense got things going early and kept the pedal down. The Cards scored three in the bottom of the first, took a break in the second, then scored one, two, and three runs in consecutive innings to close out the game. Louisville hit three triples (Easton Lotus, Bri Despines, and Madison Pickens) and three doubles (Taylor Monroe (2) and Pickens) as part of a 12-hit parade. They also drew five walks. Louisville was also fairly efficient, leaving just six players on base total. Despines led the way with four RBI on two hits and a walk, but she was followed closely by Pickens who had three RBI and led the team with four hits. Lotus had two RBI on two hits and a walk.

The second game got off to a better start for Pittsburgh, with the Panthers executing some small ball (and utilizing some luck) to get a couple on Gray early. A leadoff single was followed by a sacrifice bunt attempt that turned into an error leading to runners on second and third with no outs. A squeeze bunt scored a run and became a hit, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead and a steal put runners back on second and third with still nobody out. A sacrifice fly scored another run before Gray struck out the next two batters. Gray would go on to allow no more runs in her four innings pitched, and she gave up just one more hit. She struggled a bit with the zone, walking four, but the result was still no additional runs. Madi Reeves entered in the fifth, but she was pulled after a pair of walks and no outs. Anna Wise came in and struck out the side.

Offensively, Louisville answered the early runs by Pitt with four scored in the bottom of the first. Chelsea Mack walked to open the game, but she was out on an Easton Lotus grounder. Instead of a double-play, though, the throw to first was errant and Lotus ended up on second anyway. It wouldn't have mattered much where she was, because Bri Despines tripled again to get the Cards on the board. Camryn Lookadoo was hit by a pitch, and Madison Pickens followed with a single through the right side to score Despines. A throwing error by the right fielder scored Lookadoo as well, and Pickens advanced all the way to third. Jordan Williams singled her home and stole second before a pop-out and a flyout ended the inning.

Louisville took a break in the second again, but they scored four more in the third inning. Another zero in the fourth meant Pitt was still alive when the Cards made a pitching change in the fifth. Fortunately, as I noted, Wise was able to keep the Panthers off the board. Pickens opened the bottom of the fifth with a homer. Williams walked and Monroe singled to right field, where another E9 put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Riley Janda picked up what was technically Louisville's third straight walk-off win with a single.

Louisville's offense was effective in the second game, but they were definitely the beneficiaries of some key Pitt errors. Nevertheless, the Cards still had ten hits and three walks along with the HBP. They left just two on base. The extra base hits were down, with the one homer from Pickens, the one triple from Despines, and a pair of doubles (Pickens and Ava Venturelli). Pickens was 3-3 at the plate, knocking in four RBI and scoring every time she reached base. Outside of Pickens, the offense was much more spread out, which was good to see after the top-heavy batting in the first game.

Louisville and Pitt will have the day off due to the forecasted rain, and they'll close the series tomorrow. First pitch on Sunday will be at 4PM and the game will air on ACC Network.

Until next time, Go Cards!

Louisville Lax handled by Notre Dame 18-3 -- Friday Cardinal Couple

LAX CARDS DOWNED BY #15 IRISH IN SOUTH BEND 18-3

Not a great day for the Louisville Lacrosse squad Thursday on the Notre Dame campus.

The Cards fell behind early 8-0 after one period to the Fighting Irish and the onslaught continued in the second quarter...as the home team took an 11-1 lead to the halftime locker room. The LaxCards lone goal came from Maggie McMahon...five minutes into second period action.

Hayley Richards

The Cards made a switch at goal keeper to start the second half, bringing in sophomore Hayley Richards and were able to keep the Notre Dame scoring machine a bit at bay in the second half...losing the half only 7-2 to the Irish, but the defeat in the final game of the season, put the Cards at 2-8 in conference and 6-9 for the season.

It effectively ends the 2025-26 campaign for UofL Lax, since only eight teams participate in the post season conference tournament and Louisville finished 11th out of the 13 teams that play ACC WLax. They only bettered Cal 1-8 and Florida State 0-10.

6-9 isn't likely to get them in the NCAA Tournament. 29 teams participate in it, and UofL is ranked at #48.

A lot of questions remain about the direction of the squad and next year could possibly be decision making time about the leadership of the program.

LOUSIVILLE SOFTBALL TOPS IU 8-7 IN 10 INNING THRILLER -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOTUS WALK OFF SINGLE SETTLES IT IN ULMER

Easton Lotus has had some pretty key and clutch hits in her time as a UofL softball player...but maybe none as big as the two-RBI single early this morning in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Cards a 8-7 win over IU in Ulmer Stadium.Yes, I said this morning. The game, which didn't start until after 8 p.m. Wednesday night, ended shortly after midnight Thursday morning.

Her big blow came in a three-run bottom of the tenth inning for Louisville. The Cards, trailing 7-5  got a run when Taylor Monroe singled up the middle to drive home Madison Pickens, who scored from second...getting there because of the International rule where the batting team gets a runner on second at the start of the inning when a game goes to extra innings.  Taylor Monroe went to second when Riley Janda got a base on balls and Lotus sent a screamer down the third base line to score both runners and end the marathon.

It was a back and forth contest scoring wise between the rivals. IU led 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Cards got a run. UofL jumped ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, IU tied it in the top of the seventh, and both teams scored twice in the ninth.

Madi Reeves got the win in relief to go to 3-0 on the season. The win improves UofL record to 35-9 on the season. The Cards collected 11 hits in the victory and drew six walks...the Cards get their first win over IU since 2022.

Cards WBB reloads on the coaching front too -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 BRADBURY, BERNABEI-MCNAMEE JOIN WALZ STAFF

Joanna Bernabei-McNamee

Jeff Walz has had a multitude of assistant coaches in his 20 years at Louisville. Beginning with Steph Norman and other notables such as Sam Purcell, Adrienne Johnson, Cam Newbauer, Beth Burns and recently adding two former head coaches to join "J.P." and Brittany Morris on staff, Walz seems to always have a smart, basketball savvy and experienced crew joining him on the Cardinals bench and in practice.

Joanna Bernabei-McNamee was named to the staff a couple days ago. A lot of you will remember her being a head coach at ACC foe Boston College, but her association with Walz goes back way further than that. She and Walz were on Brenda Frese's staff at Maryland when they won the NCAA.

Jeff Walz recently spoke about the newest assistant...Mike Bradbury:

"Adding Mike Bradbury to our staff is about bringing in a coach with a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. He's been a head coach, he's navigated the challenges of building programs and he understand what it takes to compete at a high level."

Bradbury has been the head coach at Morehead, Wright State and the past ten years at New Mexico.

One has to wonder if the hires also might be Walz auditioning them for a possible head job replacing him at Louisville when he retires. Walz current contract has him at $1 million dollars a year and runs through March 2029. He's accomplished quite a bit in his time at Louisville...the only glaring thing off his resume is a national championship title.

Not saying Walz is out the door here after two more seasons, you did not hear that from me. One of his mentors...Geno at UConn continues to rule of the dynasty that is in Storrs, CT.  Of course, Geno has Chris Dailey on his staff...Walz has never given an assistant the equal coaching platform and duties Geno and Chris share. Steph Norman would probably be the closest.

With three new players transferring in, who knows how many freshmen and two new coaches, one could almost call them a "new look" UofL women's team....sure...established stars Roberts, Randolph, Elif and Berry will be on every opposing coaches coaches "mut contain" list... but three established players coming in via transfer and the promise of Bender, Mbugna and Putra make the Cards a top contender for 2026-27.

Is it WBB season yet?

Oh, btw...in case you have forgotten. your taxes are due today.

More Cardinal Callups -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

VolleyCards to Represent Team USA

Last week I wrote about callups to the US National Team on the soccer side, but this week that trend continues with a pair of volleyball players set to represent the Stars and Stripes. Kalyssa Blackshear and Payton Petersen were announced yesterday to be joining the Team USA U21 squad in late June. The two Cardinals will camp with 25 other athletes in Columbus, Ohio, where they will compete for an opportunity to represent Team USA at the NORCECA U21 Pan American Cup.

Of the 27 athletes invited to the training camp, just half (14) will be selected for the event roster. The camp will be a shade under two weeks long from June 26 to July 5th, and the Pan American Cup will be hosted in Columbus July 7-12. This opportunity marks the second chance with the national team for Blackshear. Kalyssa was an alternate on the U19 team that took silver at the 2025 World Championship in Croatia. Payton Petersen is receiving a callup for the first time.

image via gocards.com

While the training camp roster is quite varied from an athlete standpoint, the coaches all come from the professional ranks. The head coach is Tama Miyashiro, currently on staff with LOVB Salt Lake. The native of Hawai'i was a libero at Washington from 2006-2009, and she was twice named National Defensive Player of the Year. Miyashiro represented Team USA on the court from 2010-2012. She's assisted by Alfee Reft, who is currently the head coach of LOVB San Francisco, and Alisha Childress (Glass), who is a setter for MLV Las Vegas. Reft played for the USMNT after graduating from the University of Hawai'i and has been in the coaching realm since 2010. Glass was a standout at Penn State and was part of the team that won 102 straight games and won the titles in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

On the player side, Louisville is one of five universities with multiple representatives, joined by Minnesota, Nebraska, SMU, and Texas. Texas leads the way with four selections, while Nebraska has three. Minnesota and SMU match Louisville's two. Surprisingly, Stanford and Pitt were both limited to one selection, making the ACC representation just six. Also sending one representative are Creighton, Florida, Iowa State, USC and Utah, along with seven high schools from six states.

It would be wonderful for one or both of the Louisville players to make the team, but as I mentioned last week, the experience itself is invaluable.

Until next time, Go Cards!

SOFTBALL SLUGS PAST NOTRE DAME 13-5 -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOOKADOO'S BIG DAY HELPS CARDS DOWN IRISH

A huge day at the plate for Cards junior Camryn Lookadoo against UND.

Three for four at the plate with two home runs, a double and seven RBI's for the Georgetown, KY native. Yes, she alone drove in more runs than the Notre Dame squad and the first baseman improved her season batting average to .405 for the season.

The Cards were "right for the fight" today (sorry, UK) with seven runs in the first two innings. Alyssa Zabala surely loved that offense barrage to make thing less stressful for her in the circle.  Now 10-4 on the season, Zabala's stats for the game were allowing two runs on six hits in three innings of pitching.

UofL jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and the only Notre Dame softball student-athlete has was finding any success Sunday was Lily Hagan..who had two home runs and four RBI's.

The Cards...now 34-9 overall and 10-5 in conference...returns back to Ulmer Stadium to host IU in a non-conference tilt Wednesday April 15th at 8 p.m.

Softball wins, Lacrosse loses in Saturday action -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS OUTSLUG NOTRE DAME IN SOUTH BEND. LAX FALLS TO PITT IN THE L.L.S.

A good and bad day for UofL spring women's sports.

Softball travelled to South Bend and out hit the Irish softball squad for a 8-5 win.The LaxCards hosted the Panthers and took #24 Pitt to overtime but fell 15-14 to the visitors.

SOFTBALL USES FIVE RUN FIFTH INNING TO GET BY IRISH.

Louisville visited the Irish in South Bend and got two good pitching performances...one out of Brooke Gray for the win, to go 10-1 on the season...and from Jayden Gohs in relief to clinch it and get her second save credit of the season. The 8-5 UofL win tied the three game series at 1-1.

Louisville struck first in the contest when they put two on the board in the top of the first. Madison Pickens picked up two RBI's when she singled home Chelsea Mack and Bri Despines. The Irish would chip away at Cards hurler Brooke Gray for four innings, picking up runs in the second. third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

The Cards erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. The scoring began when Easton Lotus smashed a double down the right field line that scored Chelsea Mack. Camryn Lookadoo doubled to right center to bring Lotus and Despines to the plate. Then, Madison Pickens sent one out over right field fence...scoring her and Lookadoo. That made it 7-3 UofL and the Cards just had to get nine more outs.

Notre Dame wasn't ready to leave the ball park yet, though. They homered off Gray in the bottom of the fifth, and put runners on the bags...which effectively sent the UofL pitcher to the sidelines. Anna Wise came in and got the Cards out of the fifth by allowing just two runs. Jayden Gohs got the final six outs in the sixth and seventh innings for Louisville.

UofL would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Easton Lotus scored from first on a Despines double.

The squads finish the series today with a 1 p.m. start .

LAX LOSES IN OVERTIME TO PITT.

(photo from UofL)

A thriller but overtime 15-14 loss for Louisville Lacrosse today against #24 Pitt.

Kaitlyn Giandonato scored for the Panthers with a minute and a half left in the extra session for UPitt to end the sudden victory session.

Pitt began the contest with a 4-0 lead at the L.L.S. The Cards were able to fight back by the end of the period and make it a 4-3 Pitt lead. Both team were having success in finding goals in the second quarter and the contest was tied at halftime 8-8.

Louisville came out with a roar in the third period and took a 11-8 lead on goals by Charlotte Jackson and two goals from Ella Berg. Berg also assisted on Jackson's goal. Pitt responded to tie it at 11-11 and edged ahead at the end of the third 13-12 . The fourth period was one where Pitt went up 14-12 but Louisville rallied to tie it on goals by Reese Whitman and Rian Adams...and force the extra session.

The Cards drop to 6-8 on the season..and 2-7 in ACC play...while Pitt improves to 8-7 and 4-6 in conference.
