KAREN FERGUSON DAYES INTERVIEW

Louisville Women's Soccer comes off an NCAA appearance last season, a season that was head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes 19th. at UofL. I got the chance to interview "Coach KFD" earlier this week at the Lynn Stadium offices and we bring that interview to you today. 

She returns a strong roster that has pre-season ALL-ACC selection Emina Ekic at midfield and the other top two leading scorers from last year (Maisie Whitsett and Brooklyn Rivers.).

Louisville has been picked to finish eighth in a preseason poll in the ultra-competitive ACC conference that sent 10 of their 14 squads to the NCAA Tournament last year.

Louisville's season begins on Aug 17th. with an exhibition against Butler at Lynn Stadium

A HISTORY OF LOUISVILLE WOMEN'S SPORTS -- CHAPTER 11 -- WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

We move onto the tail end of our summertime project.  Today we will look at A History of Louisville Women’s Sports Chapter 11: Track and Field.  As always, we’ll refer to women’s track and field simply as track and field unless otherwise noted.

Louisville’s records trace track and field back to 1989 for outdoor. and 1992 for indoor.  They started with the Metro Conference and remained there through 1995.  UofL transitioned to Conference USA in 1996 and enjoyed a 10-year stint there.  They went to the Big East from 2005-2013 and visited the American Athletic Conference briefly in 2013.  Since 2014, Louisville track and field has participated in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Note: The men go back to 1976, several years before their women counterparts.

The Cards had moderate success in the Metro Conference, often finishing around 3^rd or 4^th.  Their time in C-USA was not great, with subpar finishes nearly every season.  Once in the Big East, Louisville took off and had 1^st place outdoor finishes five years straight and was often top three in indoor finishes.

Throwers D’Ana McCarty and Emmonnie Henderson are the most notable track and field star for the Cards.  D'Ana won the NCAA Indoor Weight Throw Championship back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010. Emmonnie Henderson holds the school record for the shot put throw and also participated in the NCAA Championships  Dorcas Wasike, still on the squad for 2019, holds two school records for distance running and has also participated in the NCAA Championships. 

Dale Cowper is the current head coach for the track and field team at Louisville.  He holds the same position with the cross-country team as well, with several the student-athletes participating in both.  Cowper took over as head coach in 2013 after having been an assistant with the Cards from 2006-2013.  Several individuals have had breakout performances under his reins, including Edwin Kibichiy, Emmonnie Henderson, Dorcas Wasike, Makenli Forrest, Alexis Gibbons, and Gabriela Leon.

Prior to Cowper, Ron Mann was head coach.  He held that position from 2004-2013.  He was with Northern Arizona for 24 years before that.  During his time in Louisville he oversaw four student-athletes win six individual national championships.  Mann retired, resulting in Cowper’s promotion.

Cardinal Park has been home to the Cards since 2000.  Originally, the middle field was used by both soccer teams.  Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium- not to be confused with the new Lynn Family Stadium that houses Louisville City FC- opened in the fall of 2014, leaving track and field alone.  The facility can seat 2,200 people but can more than triple that with standing room early.  Cardinal Park hosts some of the largest track and field events in the country including the Lenny Lyles Invitational and the Louisville Invitational.

Most track and field events are free with some larger events charging admission.  However, there is plenty of room to grab a lawn chair and sit outside the chain link fence to watch UofL perform on campus.  If you’re lucky you might be able to climb to the top of Ulmer Stadium or Trager Stadium to get a good view.

Jess Laemmle Interview -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THE JESS LAEMMLE INTERVIEW

Senior guard, student-athlete Jess Laemmle has been a fan-favorite since she walked on the University of Louisville women's basketball squad in the fall of 2016. I had the opportunity to have a chat with Jess on Wednesday to discuss her time at Louisville, what the future holds for her and her thoughts on a variety of subjects. 

Affectionately known here at CARDINAL COUPLE as "the Attack Yorkie", Jess graduated from Louisville Mercy High School and was the 2016 Louisville Catholic Sports Network's Girls' Basketball Player of the Year. Having just recently received her degree in Psychology, Jess plans on attending graduate school at UofL and exploring Sports Administration. 

Jess is a prime example of the joy and excitement that is Louisville women's sports. Jess probably could have attended a smaller school and been a starter...but her love for the program at Louisville, her teammates, the staff, the city and the fans kept the 5'2" guard local.

Justine Sowry Interview -- Taylor Signs with Mercury -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THE JUSTINE SOWRY INTERVIEW

I caught up with UofL Field Hockey head coach Justine Sowry yesterday in her office that overlooks Trager Stadium, where the Field Hockey squad practices and plays. Coach "J" is busy with preparations for the squad's first practice of the fall, which will take place next week. 

We had a great discussion on last season, the loss of Ayeshia McFerran to graduation and the pros and who the contenders are to fill that spot at goal-keeper. As you'll hear, Sowry returns a veteran team, her top three scorers from last year and gets a talented group of six freshmen to join the roster.

Field Hockey begins their 2019 season on August 24th (Saturday) with the annual scrimmage against the Alumnae and will face Miami (OH) in a scrimmage the next day. 


ASIA TAYLOR SIGNED BY PHOENIX

The Phoenix Mercury have added 6-1 forward Asia Taylor on Tuesday as a second hardship exemption due to injuries.

It's the fifth WNBA team for A-Tayy since being drafted by the Minnesota Lynx out of Louisville in 2014. It's her third stop this season, having previously been on the Indiana and Minnesota rosters. 

The addition is a seven-day contract with the Mercury, the same as guard Arica Carter, who played Sunday against Washington.

The Mercury were missing five players due to injury on Sunday yet still won 103-82 over the Mystics. Including Taylor and Carter, they'll have nine active players Thursday at Los Angeles or ten if guard Briann January (foot) is cleared to return.

Taylor played eight games last month with Minnesota, scoring a career-high 13 points in 17 minutes against Chicago on July 10.

Jared's Favorite Pictures of last season -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Jared Selects his Favorite Pictures of the 2018-2019 Season

Paulie has a special interview today, so he asked that he and I trade places for the Tuesday-Wednesday posts.  Thanks to our friend Mike Gilpatrick I now have a working computer until I invest in a new one of my own.

I have been meaning to post my favorite pictures from the 2018-2019 sports season for quite a while and now I am able to.  The pictures below are some of my favorites among the different sports last year.

For a preseason scrimmage, women's soccer hosted Morehead State.  Emina Ekic, fresh off recovery, juked a defender and was approaching another defender to go one-on-one before scoring a goal.

Field hockey faces alumnae in the annual alumnae game as a fun way to kick off the season.  Ayeisha McFerran was warming up before the match, giving me a clear shot of her preparing to save a shot.

This one isn't a women's sport but is one of my favorites because of the heavy rain.  Football had a horrible season and the torrential downpour may have been a foreshadow of that.  By the beginning of the second half I was one of few photographers remaining.

Field Hockey's Mercedes "Meche" Pastor is known for her ball controls and trickery.  Here, she works her way between defenders against Boston College.

Volleyball's Claire Chaussee has wowed us with her vertical.  She showed her hops off against Kentucky.

Women's Soccer had a successful season last year and many matches came down to the wire.  Brooklynn Rivers scored the only goal of the match against Syracuse with nine seconds remaining to get the win.  Allison Whitfield celebrates.

After taking a set against Boston College, the UofL Volleyball sidelines was ready to celebrate.  They went on to win 3-1.

WBB's Jaz Jones shows off her athleticism and vertical leaping skills on an alley-oop layup.

The women's basketball squad took down UConn in the regular season and made a splash on ESPN and every sports media outlet in the country. Coach Jeff Walz and Asia Durr shared a moment during their on-court postgame interview.

Lacrosse walloped Mercer in their home opener.  I tried standing behind the goal, to an extent, and managed to snag a goal by Hannah Morris between several defenders.

Rachel Florek stepped up as Louisville Lacrosse's main goalkeeper in the back half of the season and frustrated the UNC offense with saves like this.

Cards Softball had a habit of winning down-to-the-wire games.  They did just that in the upset against Kentucky.  Focusing on the dugout, we see the team celebrate Celene Funke crossing the plate.

Following a mid-season game and an ACC victory over Syracuse, Louisville Softball's Celene Funke and Maddy Newman celebrate by parading around in the outfield.

Women's Basketball hosted NC State on Senior Night.  Asia Durr went off to have a night none of us will soon forget.  Below is a picture of "Nite-Nite" celebrating draining another three ball.

This last one is my #1 favorite from last year.  It is from the UofL vs Florida State softball game on Monday night as the sun set over Ulmer Stadium.  The Cards walked it off 10-9 to clinch the series against then-defending NCAA Champions. These might not be my 'best' shots or highest action shots but these are my favorites.  I love to see the smiles and celebrations following games because those are the memories I know players and coaches will have these memories engraved in their minds for a long time.

Carter Back With Phoenix...Taylor released by Lynx -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

ARICA CARTER GETS SEVEN DAY CONTRACT 

Using the emergency hardship exemption clause that the WNBA has in place, the Phoenix Mercury has signed Arica Carter to a seven-day contract. Carter started the season nwith Phoenix and played two games before getting cut. 

The Mercury roster resembles more of a MASH unit than a WNBA lineup.Guard Essence Carson is out for 6-8 weeks with a calf injury. Forward/Center Sancho Lyttle will sit for 4-6 weeks with a bad knee. Diana Taurasi is having back issues. Briann January and Alanna Smith are both in boots because of foot injuries. 

All that's missing are Hawkeye, Trapper John and Radar. 

Even with a roster of just eight healthy players, Phoenix rolled against the Washington Mystics 103-82 yesterday. Carter saw four minutes and scored her first WNBA points...hitting the only shot she took. It was a reunion of sorts...Louisville teammates Carter and Myisha Hines-Allen both saw action...Myisha getting six minutes, getting three rebounds, creating two assists and hitting a free throw in her time on the floor. 


Carter's role on the Mercury is clear:  Get the ball to Brit Griner and play defense. Griner had 26 points yesterday in the Phoenix win.

Let's hope Carter can stay with the Mercury past the seven-day clause. A lot of that will depend on how long Phoenix guards Taurasi, Carson and January are out.  

Give 'em all you got while you have this second chance, A.C !!!


TAYLOR RELEASED BY LYNX

On the other spectrum of the roller coaster that is WNBA lineups, the Minnesota Lynx have release forward/guard Asia Taylor, using another aspect of the hardship clause. This is some clause, right? Apparently, the Lynx are healthy, wealthy and wise. 

Without her, the Lynx fell to Indiana on Saturday -- 86-75. 

Taylor played in eight games for Minnesota in her month-long stay, the Lynx going 4-4 in that stretch. In her last game, against, Washington, she saw just two minutes in a loss -- gathering a rebound. 

Her highlight of the stay was the 13-point, 17 minute performance she had against Chicago back on July 10th. 

Here's hoping that she gets the call again soon, if not with the Lynx, another WNBA roster. 

DURR UPDATE

The Cards "other" Asia in the WNBA -- Asia Durr -- came back from the All-Star break and resumed her role as a starter for the New York Liberty. She saw 21 minutes Saturday in  a Liberty loss to Connecticut 94-79. "Nite-Nite" had three points, on a three, and added three assists and two rebounds. Her groin may still be a little "tender" -- and those can take a while to heal fully -- so the limited minutes are understandable. 

The Liberty are in a bit of a funk lately, losing their last four on the road. Let's hope they can straighten it out and get in a position where they're a playoff contender. At 8-13, New York is 6 1/2 games behind Eastern Division leader Connecticut. 


OUR HEARTS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU

Here at CARDINAL COUPLE, our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with those in El Paso and Dayton.

Such senseless acts of violence. When will it stop? 

Where are we safe anymore? All of us are potentially subject to the crazed, misguided actions of someone who has a person, ill-founded and inane "agenda" to fulfill. 

As a white male, it is particularly distressing to see these crimes of hate coming from racist, crazed people of my gender and classification. It has to stop, whatever it takes. Whatever happened to the age old principles of "love thy neighbor" and "we are all in this together"?  

I won't get into the aspects of gun control here. I do have to wonder why we lead the world in senseless shootings, though...when we are the nation with the most opportunities and freedoms. 

A special nod of recognition to the police forces of these two and other cities. A rapid response in Texas and Ohio that undoubtedly saved hundreds of lives.

When will it stop?

Louisville Volleyball: Breakout Players and The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour -- Sunday Cardinal Couple

Volleyball Breakouts?

It's a lazy Sunday morning, and the first event on the Cards Athletic calendar is still almost two weeks away.  Jared pronounced his expected breakout players on Wednesday, but do remember, this is the guy that predicted two goals per game average for Minout Mink in Field Hockey a couple of years ago.

Case also did some digging into Soccer a bit more deeply recently, so let's take a look at how the Volleyball roster is shaping up.

First off, Jared predicted Piper Roe as his breakout player for Volleyball, and that's not a bad choice, but looking at the roster at gocards.com, we've got four middles listed, two of which, Emily Scott along with Roe, saw action as Cardinals last year.  Anna Stevenson is joining as a 6'1" transfer from Auburn as a Junior.  She put up 1.15 blocks/set in 2018 down in Alabama.

Also, we have Amaya Tillman joining as a freshman, and the little bit of video I've seen of her play is quite impressive.  So the field is crowded in the middle.  Of course, a typical Volleyball lineup will include two middles, so there is definitely opportunity for Roe to make her mark known.  My selection will probably be Tillman, however.

For pin hitting, we only have a single opposite hitter listed, although it's not that much of a challenge for left sides to shift over to the right side and swing.  Aiko Jones has an opportunity as that specialist opposite, however.  Jones took a red-shirt last year, to give her some time to develop her game, she has amazing athleticism, but the question of the pre-season is how much refinement can she bring to her play.  She's been working hard, and has a great attitude.

For pin hitting overall, however, I have to look to Claire Chaussee.  We know she has power, both at the pin and from back the serving line, however there is a real need to bring some control to it.  If she can tighten it up just a little bit, perhaps sacrificing just a little bit of that power to do it, this could be a major breakout year for her.  If she does, look for us to be talking about Chaussee as the next Melanie McHenry.

And, of course, McHenry will have a great year, but her breakout was really the first weekend of play her freshman year at Bowling Green State when she won the MVP of the weekend, so she'll just be continuing to build on her excellence here in her finale season.  Nena Mbonu is coming in as a freshman, and is just a really big question mark right now.  There's athleticism there, but what comes to fruition from it?  How ready is she for D1 level of play?  We'll get a glimpse on the 17th.

I've been saying for months that the setting position is Tori Dilfer's position to lose.  A transfer from TCU who will be in her sophomore season with us, played on the US Collegiate National Team that went to the WUGs and she definitely has skills.  Early reports, however, point to this being more competitive than I was expecting, with Shannon Shields, an incoming freshman, receiving lots of kudos.  Either could potentially have what we could consider breakout seasons.

Lastly, in defense, I have no reason to believe anyone other than Alexis Hamilton will don the libero jersey, but for breakout performance, I think I would point to Mia Stander.  She got pressed into action last year, a bit sooner than she was really expecting, I believe, thanks to various injuries and performed well as a true freshman.

Molly Sauer graduated, Kelly O'Neal is not listed on the roster at all this year after dealing with back problems and missing nearly the whole season last year.  With more D1 level preparation, this could be a great year for Stander.  The competition here, is Akela Yuhl, who has also contributed well at times, and an incoming freshman Alexa Hendricks.  Again, as an incoming freshman, Hendricks will be a bit of a question mark, but comes from a good background, matriculating to UofL from the KIVA/Assumption High School pipeline that has sent so many excellent Defensive players on to play for so many schools over the years.

OK, I hear you all saying that I'm dodging by looking at positions and you want a single breakout performance prediction for the year.  I'm still going to caveat this a bit, but, here we go.

Claire Chaussee will get the most attention for breakout play, but my personal expectation of
breakout performance credit will go to Mia Stander.  Chaussee will get more attention overall because she's an offensive player, and offense always gets more attention that defense, pretty much in any sport, but I believe the short-stuff (5'3") defender from Atlanta will have the biggest improvement in play and contributions to making this team a better team.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

Was it a breakout performance for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour?  Eh, well, we had fun, even with just Paulie and I in the studio.  I ended up scoring a respectable 80 on the quiz after a hot first half, and a disappointing second half.  We will be working on our concentration exercises as we start gearing up for the beginning of the fall season.

Ekic Named to Watch List -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Emina Ekic on MAC Hermann Preseason List

When the MAC Hermann Watch Lists were announced earlier this week, a familiar face showed up. For the second year in a row,

Emina Ekic was named to the preseason watch list for the “Heisman of College Soccer.” At least they got her name right this year. She appeared as “Emma” Ekic on last year’s watch list. Ekic did not advance to the semifinalist list last season and the award ultimately went to Stanford’s Catarina Macario, who appears on this list again this year.

Including Ekic, this year’s watch list includes 12 ACC players (of 61 total listed). Ekic will be a key factor on the team this year, as I expect we’ll see additional focus on the offensive end. If she can maintain the brilliance we’ve seen at times for a full season, we’ll definitely be seeing her name stay on this list throughout the rounds of cuts.

With just two weeks left until the opening exhibition match, I’ll have a bit more soccer content coming (surprise). Look forward to a full season preview next week. I am traveling this weekend so don’t quite have time to get it out.

We are also looking forward to an interview with Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, which is in the works. Hopefully we can get that done before the new season starts. Either way, the summer slump is nearly over. You know which sport I’m most excited for, so let us know which ones you’re looking forward to.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

As I mentioned, I’m out this week, but we also learned that Jared and Daryl will be unable to join in studio.

That leaves Jeff and Paulie alone for a throwback two man episode of the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour. They managed to hold down the fort for years prior to the expansion of the radio crew and have done so earlier this summer as well, so look forward to another exciting edition nonetheless.

It'll be Worldwide Jeff vs. the Cardinal Couple Radio Quiz this week. Given how the crew last week would have been academically ineligible for this week, based on their scores, the real question here is whether Paulie needs to make it an easier test of Cardinal knowledge for the participants. You're always invited to play along at home.

A HISTORY OF UOFL WOMEN'S SPORTS -- CHAPTER 10 -- WOMEN'S TENNIS -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

WOMEN'S TENNIS

As we enter the final stretch of our History of Louisville Women’s Sports we look at Chapter 10: Tennis. As we have done with the previous week, we will refer to women’s tennis simply as tennis.

Louisville officially traces its tennis program back to 1979. There has been roughly 150 players to walk through the doors since then.

Many players have had successful careers. Kelly Ford and Natalie Laszkowski are tied for the career record in singles wins with 102 each. Meg Peavy has the highest winning percentage with 0.855. The Bass-Rudd Tennis Center is the current home for the Cards. They have the option to play indoors or outdoors with the inside containing six courts and eight courts on the outside. It is considered one of the best collegiate tennis facilities in the country. The Bass-Rudd Tennis Center first opened its doors in 1994 and the Cards have been there since Day One.

Mark Beckham has been head coach since 2007. Beckham played for the UofL men’s team during his college days. Beckham guided the Cards to their first NCAA Championships appearance in program history. Their highest ranking under Beckham is 38th. He led his team to a Regional Runner-Up finish in the 2013 ITA Regional Doubles Championship. Beckham has reached well beyond 100 wins in his career. Beckham was an assistant coach, primarily for the men's team, before he was elevated to the head coaching job for UofL women's tennis. 

Beckham is a Louisville native and played his high school tennis at Eastern High School. 

The 2010-11 season is notable.  He had BIG EAST Freshman of the year Julie Fellerhoff on the roster. He had the highest ranked doubles team in Division I in Fellerhoff and Mandy Brown and the highest ranked singles player in Becca Shine. 

Unfortunately, despite the existing of Louisville Tennis tracing back to 1979 there is very little documentation on anything outside of letter-winners. Nothing is posted about season results or how they fared in the different conferences such as Conference USA, Big East, AAC, or ACC. The history books don’t even reference coaches prior to Mark Beckham.

Admission is free for all tennis matches, indoors and outdoors. There are bleachers at the ends of the courts for easy view of the matches. You can sometimes catch us out watching the matches live and I try to make a match or two a year to get some photos.

Kylee Shook Interview -- 2019-20 Denny Crum Court rendering -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

THE KYLEE SHOOK INTERVIEW

On Wednesday morning, I had the opportunity to sit down with University of Louisville senior post player Kylee Shook and conduct an interview. Kylee has been suffering a bit with a sinus infection, but carried off our chat quite well.

Kylee participated in 35 games for Jeff Walz's Cards in the 2018-19 season and started in three of them. She saw 792 minute of court time, an average of 22 minutes a game. Totaling 250 points, Shook averaged 7.1 point per contest, seventh highest on last year's roster. She shot for 51% from the floor and was 21-53 from three-point range, for 40%. 

Kylee grabbed 209 rebounds, second-highest on the team (behind Sam Fuehring) and those skills will undoubtedly be counted upon again in the 2019-20 season . 

An off season surgery on her left knee to clear up a patella tendon issue was successful and she's working on strengthening the knee and leg.

THE KYLEE SHOOK INTERVIEW

Kylee, like Jaz and "B", made a point of stressing team unity and how well the roster gets along with each other. This is such an important item...we know what "dissension in the ranks" can do to any squad but it appears that syndrome does not exist within the Cardinal roster.

Like many of the players on the Cardinal WBB roster, Kylee participates in the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). She professed to being a bit nervous after the interview was completed but it certainy wasn't noticeable during it. 

Kylee fully understands and is ready for the challenge of a season without "two A's and a F" (Arica Carter, Asia Durr and Sam Fuehring). The dual threat of Shook on offense, inside the paint and from beyond the arc, presents yet another challenge for opposing squads and she's a proven, successful rebounder. 

We wish Kylee a healthy,, productive and successful senior season on Denny Crum Court and on the road !
