WBB Cards Corral Wolfpack 66-59 -- Softball Starts ACC-BIG 10 Challenge today -- FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

FAST START, FEROCIOUS DEFENSE LEAD TO CARDS WIN

Louisville women's basketball tied up the standing at the top of the ACC with an impressive, hard fought 66-59 win over NC State Thursday night in Raleigh. 

Jazmine Jones led all scorers with 19 points, Kylee Shook knocked on the triple-double door with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks and Elizabeth Balogun added eight fourth quarter points in the Cards 22nd victory of the year.

Dana Evans played all 40 minutes for the Cards and added 14 points in the Cards sixth straight victory over the Wolfpack. The squads played  before a sold-out Reynolds Coliseum (5575 attending).

The Cards contained Elissa Cunane, the NC State All-ACC contender, to just 10 points on 1-12 shooting. If the UofL defense has looked any better this year, I'd be hard-pressed to say when.

Louisville took control of the contest early on, going on a 14-0 run in the first quarter that spanned a six-minute stretch. The Cards went from trailing 6-1 to assuming a 15-6 lead in that stretch, getting contributions from four of the starters and a Jones three with 3:17 left in the first set the score at 15-6 Louisville. 

Jones would score the final six points of the first session to give UofL a 19-8 lead. The huge NC State crowd had quieted down quite a bit, partially because NC State was 3-16 from the floor for a woeful 19%. 

The Cards would keep up that early momentum in the second quarter, and a Yacine Diop three had UofL holding a 24-13 edge with 7:43 until halftime. Evans gave UofL their largest lead of the half when she rolled in a layup to make it 30-16 with 3:28 left in second quarter action. 

You expected NC State to make some kind of run sometime in the contest and their first one followed the Evans score. Seven straight points from the Pack cut the margin to 30-23 with a minute-and-a-half until the mid-game break. Shook recorded a huge block on Cunane, though, with 54 seconds to go and Evans sent a dagger through the NCST defense when her three attempt found paydirt with seven seconds left in the half.

The teams went to the break with Louisville holding a 33-23 advantage. UofL shot 50% (13-26) in those first 20 minutes, Evans and Jones had 10 points each and the Wolfpack limped into the locker room with a paltry 25% (8-32) shooting mark.  Kayla Jones was the only bright spot for Wes Moore's squad on offense, leader Elissa Cunane had no baskets and just a few free throws, getting dominated by the Cards contingent of Shook, Bionca Dunham and Liz Dixon. The Cards had also held star-guard "Ace" Konig to one successful basket in the first twenty. 

UofL maintained the double-digit lead for most of the third quarter. A Jones jumper created a 36-25 Cards advantage with just a minute-and-a-half into the third quarter. "E" Balogun picked up her third foul a minute later and went to the bench but the Cards were still productive. Evans knocked back a contested shot to make the score 42-31 and Shook made a nice inside move to score with 2:19 left in the quarter to provide the Cards with a 44-35 cushion. 

NC State mounted another challenge to close the quarter, getting five straight points to trim the Cardinal advantage to 44-40 with 1:30 on the clock. Louisville was able to find Shook inside again to make it 46-40 with 41 seconds to play in the third and the quarter ended at that score. 

The Cards managed just four points in the final four minutes of the third, on Shook's two scores. The Reynolds Coliseum crowd was getting loud again and the Cards knew they had a fight on their hands entering the fourth. 

Cunane got the fever pitch inside Reynolds even louder when she sank her only basket of the contest, a wide-open three that came just 33 seconds into the final quarter. 46-43 now and NCST was closer than they'd been since early in th first quarter. How would Louisville respond? 

After two missed NCST free throws that could have made it a one-point affair, Diop answered with a three to push the Cardinal lead back to six points at 49-43. The Pack responded with a three, though. Balogun got un-tracked with a jumper, though, ith 6:30 left and it began a 9-2 UofL run over the next three minutes that featured another Balogun score and a dead-on Jones three that pushed Louisville a 60-48 edge with four minutes to play. Two Cunane free throws were all the home team could muster in that stretch.

The Wolf Pack looked deflated, the crowd had quieted and the Cards were back in control.

Balogun connected on a three with 43 seconds to play and Louisville was up 65-53. She added a free throw to close out the Cards scoring, NC State had a couple of threes to get the margin closer in the last 30 seconds. Walz had inserted Laemmle and Duvall into the game, victory assured.

UofL had come into #4 in the nation's den and pulled off a 66-59 win with superb defense, 48.1% shooting and sent the crowd at Reynolds home suffering their squad's first loss at home this season.  


THE FRED REPORT

If Fred McMurray had been there, maybe he
would have called this one "My Three Cards." 

FREE THROWS -- Not the best night for the Cards at the charity stripe. No one attempted more than four and the Cards shot 7-13 from the "free one" line. 53.8% doesn't qualify for a letter. 

REBOUNDS -- The Cards battled NCST hard on the boards but, led by three players with seven grabs each (Kayla Jones, Cunane and Jakia Brown-Turner) the Pack took the rebounding battle 39-34. Kylee led all rebounders with 10 and Jaz added eight grabs, Balogun seven. Losing the rebound battle won't get a letter. 

EFFICIENCY/EXECUTION -- UofL had just nine turnovers in 40 minutes and shot an impressive "almost 50%" against one of the best defenses in the ACC. Only nine assists on 26 made baskets, but, the "three ball" found its way back into the Cardinal offense. Diop and Jones combined for five of the seven made threes in 18 attempts (38.9%). Five players with at least eight points each, in a game where Louisville tallied just 66 points, show the passing was above average and we'll hand out a Captial "E" for the better-than-average execution. 

DEFENSE -- This is where the Cards "brought it" last night. Holding the Pack to 32.3% shooting. Containing Cunane to 1-12 shooting and Konig to 1-6. Despite losing the second chance points (15-10), points-off-turnovers (14-12) and points-in-the-paint (32-30), Louisville held NCST to 15 points below their season average and did it in the Pack's house. Kylee was everywhere (10-10-and seven blocks)  Defense gets a Capital "D" for last night's caging of the Wolves.

CONCLUSION

A much needed road win over a "maybe ranked too high" #4 NCST that stopped the Cards two-game losing streak. Louisville came out aggressive, got their offense working early and played a whale of a defensive game. The starters got this done, with some huge assistance from previous starter Diop and a gutsy, strong 16 minutes from Kasa Robinson.

The attitude and mission statement the Cards had was, "We don't lose three in a row." and they accomplished the mission. The shooting touch returned for Kylee, Jaz and Dana -- they went 18-34 (53%) from the floor and after a foul-plagued, slow start...Balogun showed what she means to the team with a strong fourth quarter. 

The Cards showed a bunch of heart, pride and toughness in their best effort of February and since a 32-point win at Notre Dame last month. Those same Irish comes into the KFC YUM! CENTER on Sunday for the "Play 4 Kay" Pink-out game. 

Notre Dame comes to town Sunday after losing a heart-breaker, last second contest to Boston College last night. It's Play 4 Kay. PINK OUT Day so dress accordingly and get out to back your 22-3, 11-2 Cards as they start their final, five-game run to capture the ACC regular-season title. 


Redemption and results. Both happened last night for Louisville on Tobacco Road. 

(We couldn't find any post-game presser audio/video for either head coach anywhere. The ACC Network did feature Kylee and Jaz on interviews after the contest.  We will offer Wes Moore's post game, radio comments. )

SOFTBALL SWINGS INTO ACC/BIG 10 CHALLENGE ACTION THIS MORNING. 

Holly Aprile's Cardinal Softball squad is in Carolina also, participating at UNC's field in Chapel Hill against Big 10 representatives.

They'll get in four games in three days, two each against Michigan and Wisconsin and start it out this morning at 11 a.m. against the Wolverines. 

We haven't found a TV link for this yet. It doesn't look like the ACC Network Extra is going to stream it on line, either, so we'll be reduced to following the live stats updates.

We did submit a offer to talk with head Coach Holly Aprile earlier this week, but, did not receive an answer out of the Softball S.I.D office. A quick turn-around for Louisville Softball, though, coming from Florida, getting home and pretty much turning around to go to North Carolina. 

The Cards go into the Challenge with a 1-4 record. 

Another slate of tough games await with the Wolverines (5-0) and Badgers (4-1).

Wisconsin no-hits Softball Cards...more on Baylor -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

MENZ ENDS CARDS WIN STREAK WITH NO-HITTER

Louisville softball faced #21 Wisconsin yesterday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium and the visitors handed the Cards a 10-1, five-inning loss that featured Badger pitcher Kaitlyn Menz tossing a no-hitter against Sandy Pearsall's squad. 

The Cards win streak ends at six. Louisville did manage a run in the bottom of the second to tie the contest. Tiarra Sanabria drew a base on balls and advanced to second on a Lillie Goetz fielders choice. Megan Hensley walked to load the bases for Jamie Soles...whose ground-out brought in Sanabria. 

Other than that, the Cards bats were held at bay. UofL starting pitcher Maryssa Becker was touched for seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings...Hensley pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed three runs and three hits. It was the first no-hitter thrown at UofL since Michigan performed the feat back in 2006

After 12 straight games at Ulmer, the Cards take to the road for a three-game series at Syracuse that starts tomorrow. Louisville is 18-8 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.

GOING BEAR HUNTING NO WALK IN THE PARK

When the Louisville women's basketball team faces Baylor late Friday night in Oklahoma City...they better (to borrow an old cliche) come loaded for bear. 

These Texan Bears from Waco have plenty of players who can hang a loss on an opponent and when they are on their game...there may not be a better team in the country...except Geno's dogs in Connecticut. 

Like many bears coming out of hibernation, Baylor started slowly against the Golden Bears from California in their last outing...but finished with a roar. 

 Baylor led just 17-12 after the first quarter, then cranked off a 15-0 run in the second quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers by Natalie Chou, and went into halftime up 40-20. Baylor had three players score in double figures, led by seniors Alexis Prince and Nina Davis with 16 points each. Kristy Wallace added 10 points and nine assists.

Down 20 at halftime is daunting enough...but with all Big-12 and starting center 6'7" Kalani Brown picking up two early fouls and watching 19 minutes of action next to head coach Kim Mulkey in the chairs...realizing that she would be back to add firepower to the Baylor attack had to be of great concern to California head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. 

Quite frankly, California should have been placed in the WNIT instead of the Big Dance. They were 19-11 on Selection Monday, had gone 6-12 in conference play....were seventh in the Pac 12, got knocked out in the first round of the PAC 12 tournament by 22 points against Oregon St. and were 4-8 in their last 12 games. I'll say it again...Virginia got hosed. 

Mulkey presented Gottlieb with a baby-shower type gift during the shoot-around the day of the game...since Lindsay is about seven months into term. She should have given her a couple of aspirin or a fifth of red wine for pain relief. 

The Bears come at you with multiple threats and have complied some pretty impressive numbers. (This is where our Jeff McAdams moans...Paulie is about to start throwing stats out). 

Brown leads a balanced attack with 15.1 ppg. She's has plenty of company in double figure scoring...Alexis Jones is at 13.4, Nina Davis 12.6 and Alexis Prince 12.1. . Prince and Davis are regular starters. Off the bench, Beatrice Mompremier adds 8.3, Lauren Cox 8.0 and Kristy Wallace 7.5. These seven, plus Natalie Chou, average anywhere from 15-28 minutes a game.  

Baylor outscored opponents by an average of 89.4 to 55.0 during the season. They dismantled Winthrop 140-32. They scored over 100 points eight times.  

Height-wise...they are impressive as well. Brown, as we mentioned earlier, is 6'7". Cox and Mompremier are 6'4" and Prince and Chou go 6'2". Out of the top eight...there are two red-shirt seniors, one junior, three sophomores and two freshmen. 

The Bears have lost three games this year. Against UConn in a early season 72-61 loss at Storrs, they trailed by just three at the half. After being tied at 54-54 early in the fourth...Baylor went nearly four minutes without scoring, had five turnovers and missed seven out of eight shots. 

They also fell to Texas...in Waco...during early February by a score of 85-79. Texas came out and "punched them right in the mouth" to start the game...according to Mulkey and led the Bears 47-35 at the half. UT shot 72% in the second quarter. Baylor fought back and tied the contest at 74-74 but the Longhorns hit seven free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the win. 

West Virginia provided a bit of a surprise to Baylor in the Big 12 conference tournament final with a 77-66 beating of the Bears. Leading 39-30 at the half, the Mountaineers extended that to 65-44 going into the final quarter and hung on for the win. WVU's Tynice Martin had 32 in the win.  

Baylor. They can be beat. Not very often, but it is possible. Are they as good as the 2013 squad Louisville beat in the regionals. I will say "no". There is no Griner on this 2016-17 team...although Kalani Brown is pretty fearsome in the paint. No Odyssey Sims present...even though the Alexis duo does a fine job at the guard sports. Is Louisville as good now as they were in 2013? Another hard question, but I will say "no". There is no Shoni. Asia Durr can put up Shoni-like numbers...but isn't quite the on-the-court leader, driver and force on the court. 

Yet. 

The Cards are close, though. If Hines-Allen, Moore, Shook and Ms. Durr can ignite that fire we saw against Tennessee late and get a solid bench performance....it could be another upset in the making. Taylor, Slaughter, Reid were key factors in 2013. Myisha, Mariya and Kylee have comparable skills...if not better. 

A high scoring affair ahead? The numbers would indicate definitely...but Walzian defenses can...and have...limited some pretty powerful offenses to considerably less points than their season averages. Coach will tell you that defense and scoring more points than the opponent wins games. The Cards allow 60 points a contest. Accomplishing this against the high-powered Baylor attack will be a challenge...but Walz will have had four days to prepare, plan and scout these Bears. I like the Cards chances. 

Or, they could follow the Sylvia Hatchell philosophy. After winning their first game in the ACC Tournament, Hatchell was asked what the Tar Heels needed to do to defeat Syracuse. She responded: 

"I guarantee ya we're gonna be praying a lot"

We'll look more closely at what the Cards need to do to win in our Friday morning article.

The WNIT has a Sweet Sixteen now and two ACC schools are a part of it Georgia Tech knocked off UCF to get there and will face MTSU next. Virginia Tech downed Navy to advance and gets Penn St. next. Of local interest, Indiana also is a Sweet Sixteen participant .

The engineers move forward! Good job Techies and keep on rolling.

Lacrosse downs Denver 14-3...Softball splits...WBB faces Boston today -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LACROSSE GOES TO 3-0

One of Louisville Lacrosse head coach Kellie Young's objectives this season was to create a more balanced scoring attack. Objective met as eight Cards scored in a 14-3 win Saturday over Denver at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium. 

Louisville went on a 7-0 run to finish the first half after falling behind to Denver 2-1 eight minutes into the contest. 

Kellie Young explains what the Cards did to erase the deficit. 

"We were just following the scout. We got a little bit anxious to start the game...too nonchalant about a team that was very feisty, so the adjustment was to get back to the scout. We called the time out, reminded them of what the plays were supposed to be and the goals started to come." 

Hannah Kolowski and Kaylin Morissette scored twice on the run and Louisville had a 8-2 lead at the half. The Cards out-shot Denver 14-8 in the first thirty and held a huge 10-1 advantage in draw controls thanks to Morissette.

The Cards pushed the lead to 10-2 when Morissette and Cortnee Daley connect to open the final stanza. 

Daley knew the challenge ahead: 

"They're a good team and we knew the challenge was to take it to them for 60 minutes. Defensively we had some huge stops and going into attack we were able to capitalize on those stops." 

Morissette took a hard body hit early in the second half and was down for several minutes before being assisted to the sidelines. She did return to action later in the game and appears to be OK.

Brittany Read had eight saves in goal in the win. The Cards pushed the lead to 13-3 after Julia Wood picked up her second goal with 8:55 remaining and the rest of the contest was played with a continuous running clock. 

UofL travels to Nashville next for a Tuesday afternoon matchup against Vandy.

SOFTBALL SPLITS IN ACC/BIG 10 CHALLENGE

Louisville got great pitching performances from Maryssa Becker and Megan Hensley Saturday in Raleigh, NC...losing 4-3 to Nebraska and downing Wisconsin for the second day in a row 5-0.

NEBRASKA VS LOUISVILLE

In the opener, the teams were locked in a scoreless battle for three innings before Becker went fence in the top of the fourth to put the Cards up 1-0. Nebraska would counter with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. 

 Morgan Meyer scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and the Cards tied the contest in the top of the seventh when Morgan Hart hit her first home run of the season with two outs. Nebraska would touch Becker for a double and two singles, though in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the win. 

WISCONSIN VS LOUISVILLE

Megan Hensley pitched six innings of no-hit softball in the afternoon game and Becker drove in three runs to lead the Cards to the shutout win. 

Louisville scored runs in the first and third to grab a 2-0 lead and in the fifth inning, Becker knocked a two-RBI double on a attempted intentional walk where the pitch got within her swinging range. 

Hailey Smith scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring in the sixth. 

Hensley gave up a single in the seventh for the Badgers only hit...Wisconsin did load the bases with two outs but Hensley delivered her only strikeout of the game to end the threat. 

The Cards will face Nebraska again at 10 a.m. today to complete the challenge.

WOMEN'S HOOPS VS B.C. 

The Louisville women's basketball team looks for their 22nd win of the season when they face Boston College today at 1 p.m. The broadcast will be shown on BCEagles TV, which is available at the Boston College website. It is premium content, so be prepared to shell out a few bucks for the feed. 

BC got their second ACC win of the season on the road Thursday by knocking off win-less Clemson 67-50.

It's a tough end of regular season stretch for the Eagles, who will face Syracuse and Notre Dame after the Cardinals leave town.

Louisville Softball wallops Wisconsin 7-1....Lacrosse vs. Denver today -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS JUMP ON BADGERS EARLY IN ACC/BIG 10 CHALLENGE

Sandy Pearsall will tell you she is a big fan of the offensive part of softball. She also values the strong arm of pitcher Maryssa Becker. Coach P got the best of both worlds yesterday in Raleigh, NC as the Cards bombarded Wisconsin 7-1. 

Becker turned in a strong performance in the circle, going the distance and allowing an unearned run while punishing the Badgers at the plate with a double, home run and three RBI's. 

Louisville (5-1) put up a three run first inning...starting out when Sidney Melton and Jordan McNary reached safely and scored on a Becker double down the left field line. Becker scored the Cards third run of the inning when sophomore Nicole Pufahl singled her home. 

Becker kept the Badgers at bay until the top of the sixth...a throwing error allowed Wisconsin a run after a walk and fielders choice. 

Louisville responded in the bottom half of the inning in big fashion. Becker led off with a home run to right-center, Megan Hensley took Mr. Spalding for a ride to left-center and Pufahl smashed the Cards third consecutive "touch em all" with a blast over the center-field fence. Louisville would add a fourth run to make it 7-1 when Hailey Smith reached home on a Brittany Sims single.

The Cards are showing the bats early this season...scoring at least six runs in their five wins. Pufahl has three home runs so far and Hensley has cleared the fence twice. 

Louisville plays twice today....facing Nebraska at noon and going against Wisconsin again at 2:30.

LACROSSE HOSTS DENVER TODAY

Cards LAX puts their 2-0 record on the line today at 1 p.m. against DENVER at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

UofL comes into the contest after a win last week at Temple. Cortnee Daley leads the Cards with five goals in the two games...Kaylin Morissette has four scores and three assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Read has allowed just 11 goals on the season and has racked up an impressive 16 saves so far. 

Balanced scoring has been a key for Kellie Young's squad this year...seven Cards have scored this season. Read is coming off ACC Goalkeeper of the Week honors. 

Denver (1-1) took down Fresno State in their opener and fell to Colorado last time out. The Cards are 2-1 lifetime against the Pioneers...defeating them last year in Denver 14-9.

SOFTBALL TODAY AT ULMER STADIUM HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER IN LOUISVILLE

NO SOFTBALL TODAY!


Weather permitting, the University of Louisville softball team will kick off Day 3 of the Louisville Softball Classic against Wisconsin at 10 a.m. this morning. Rain is forecasted for the Louisville area Sunday and, indeed, it was raining early this morning when Paulie padded out to get the morning paper.

Louisville (23-3) took the day off Saturday after two wins on Friday. The Cards extended their win streak at Ulmer Stadium to 11-0 with a exciting 4-2 win over UNC and then blasted EMU 6-1 in the second game.

Louisville will close out the Classic on Monday against Iowa at 1:30 and also will face Indiana Wednesday at Ulmer with a 6 p.m. game.

Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin...didn't Sandy get the memo that Louisville is headed to the ACC instead of the Big 10? Oh well, domination of one conference at a time...

Louisville Lacrosse is 6-1 on the season and faces another 6-1 squad today at 1 p.m in Philly against the Drexel Dragons.

Drexel is 1-1 in their last two, falling to Maryland-Baltimore County and then downing Colgate 12-7. Our guess is that if Rachel LeCoq "Le Gran Le Coq" was still at Colgate...the teeth-cleaners would have won.

The Cards have won their last two...both on the road...romping Presbyterian in Georgia and demolishing Detroit Wednesday 19-2.

Louisville is ranked #5 nationally in scoring offense and scoring margin. The Dragons are #14 in the nation in scoring defense.

Drexel was a pre-season pick to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Kelli Joran leads the Dragons with 19 goals on the season. Goalie Teresha Bradley is allowing just 7.36 goals allowed in seven games.

Our thoughts are with the team, staff and students of Seton Hill University...who lost their lacrosse coach, unborn son and bus driver in a crash yesterday while on the road.

We'd be remiss if we didn't extend our hearty congratulations to the Louisville men's basketball team who won the BIG EAST Tournament last night in New York's Madison Square Garden with 78-61 win of Syracuse.

Back-to-back titles for Pitino's players and back-to-back MVP Tournament awards to Peyton Siva.

After a rough start that had Louisville down 35-23 at the half, the Cards dominated the final 15 minutes of the second half, going on a 24-3 run that was incredible to watch and led 56-48 with 8:51 to play. Louisville would continue to increase that margin and was up 73-55 with two minutes left.

How about freshman Montrezl Harrell with 20 points? The Cards have won their last 10 in a row and if they're not a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, maybe the top seed of ALL the teams playing...somebody has some explaining to do.

We found parking on Frankfort Avenue and stumbled in for another Cardinal Couple Radio show yesterday and had a lively time discussing Louisville women's basketball, softball, lacrosse, swimming, the Selection Show Party and first and second NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at the KFC YUM! Center.

Down one co-host...(Jenny was in Indianapolis trying out for the WNBA Indiana Fever squad)...we still managed to make it through the broadcast in one piece. Thanks to the brilliant Jeff McAdams and also to Coach Walz for the segment. And, Monkberry Moon Delight...in the control booth keeping us on the air and inserting the taped clips.
