BY(Through)...Cards throttle Cougars 86-53 in NCAA first round -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LOUISVILLE FORCES 30 TURNOVERS IN 33-POINT WIN

(Notes written in haste so that Jude or Bria won't pilfer them and run them to the other side of the den.)

The University of Louisville women's basketball team put four in double figures and had 24 steals in a rout of BYU Saturday afternoon in Tampa. In a game that got a bit "chippy" at times, Louisville physically out-played, out-hustled, out-fought and out-scored the Cougars to advance to the second round of the Big Dance.

The Cards started slowly...leading only 7-6 after 4 1/2 minutes but put together a 8-0 run to take a 15-6 lead after an Arica Carter lay-in in the paint. The Cards were forcing BYU miscues (8 in the first 6 1/2 minutes) and getting production inside from Myisha Hines-Allen and Shawnta' Dyer.

Louisville continued to score almost effortlessly against the Cougars...a 20-12 lead with 9:19 to go turned into 24-12 after two UofL steals-for-scores in 21 seconds. Another Carter jumper set the tally at 28-16 Louisville with 6:16 to go in the half and two back-to-back Mariya Moore threes stretched the lead out to 38-20 with 2:48 remaining.

The Cards took a 38-24 lead into the locker room, Hines-Allen with nine points and Dyer with eight to lead the way for UofL. The Cards had a 20-2 edge in points off turnovers, 14 steals and had forced 17 turnovers. Morgan Bailey was about the only Cougar weapon...with 10 points. Surprisingly, BYU had a 22-15 edge in rebounds.

UofL continued the onslaught to start the second half. The already aggressive, physical game took a down-turn when Cardinal freshman guard Moore floored BYU's Morrison with a left shoulder to the chin a minute into play. The flagrant+ 1 foul was painful to watch. The two Coach Jeff's exchanged words at the scorers table. A minute later, BYU's Lexi Eaton purposely tripped Bria Smith on a Cardinal fast break. Things were getting chippy on the floor but it didn't slow the Cardinal Express down.

Hines-Allen put Louisville ahead 45-26 with 15:33 to go and the Cougars' center Morgan Bailey picked up her fourth foul. Hines-Allen would connect again with 13:07 to keep Louisville cruising 52-34. They would continue to expand the lead and BYU was simply being run over by the more athletic Cards.

Schimmel completed her own 7-0 run against the Cougars with a steal and layup (the Cards 19th of the game) to make it 67-42 UofL with 5:48 remaining and the only thing in doubt by then was how many the Cards would win by. A minute later, Eaton picked up a technical foul for slamming the ball on the court after losing it out-of bounds.

The play-of-the night occurred with 3:55 remaining...Emmonnie Henderson corralling a rebound, leading the fast break and going coast-to-coast... putting in a layup to make it 79-44 Cards. It capped off a 19-2 UofL run and the play even brought a smile to Walz's face. Ariana Freeman gave the Cards their final basket and largest lead of the night when she hit a layup with 24 seconds left for the final 86-53 win.

Hines-Allen led Louisville with 19 points, Dyer added 13 and Jude and Bria had 11 each.

Louisville will face USF Monday night...a 73-64 winner over LSU in the SunDome in the game after Louisville's win.

Louisville Lacrosse improved to 7-2 on the season with a 15-6 win over Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg. It is the Cards first win in the ACC.

Faye Brust led the way for the Cards with four goals. Kaylin Morissette added three and had 12 draw controls.

The Cards jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and took a 8-3 advantage into halftime. Louisville wold score the first five goals of the second half to have a 10 goal advantage at 13-3 before coasting in with the win.

Louisville travels to Longwood for a Wednesday match next.

Senior Kelsi Jones went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs on the day as the University of Louisville softball team split an ACC doubleheader with North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards fell 4-2 in game one, but rebounded to take the second game 9-2. Louisville (17-8, 7-1 ACC) and North Carolina (21-6, 6-1) will meet at 12 p.m. Sunday to decide the series.

Time to dance -- Saturday Cardinal Couple

CARDS FACE BYU TODAY AT 4

Clear the chairs and tables from the floor, put on the slick soled shoes and strike up the band. Hopefully it's Robbie Bartlett's group on stage. The Cards are ready for their first round game in the NCAA WBB Tournament and the sunny shores of Tampa Bay serves as the venue for today's game. Time to dance, amigos!

Louisville (25-6 ) and the #8 team in the nation prepares for a tough first round match against BYU (23-9) and winners of the WCC Tournament. They were a #5 seed in the West Coast matchup and downed San Francisco 76-65 to grab the crown. They've won four of their last five and have the WCC Player of the year in Morgan Bailey. She averaged 17.3 ppg and grabbed 10.5 boards a game.

LEXI EATON
Backing her up is the WCC Tournament MVP Lexi Eaton, who leads the Cougars in scoring with 20.7 ppg. Kylie Maeda will see to getting them the orb, she leads BYU with 136 assists on the season.

Veteran coach Jeff Judkins (305-142) led the Cougs to a 12-6 WCC record and his squad averages 68.6 ppg and the Cougs shoot it well with 43% marksmanship.

MORGAN BAILEY
The Cards need to go out today and simply play Louisville basketball. Create and score inside. Put stifling defense on the scoring duo of Bailey and Eaton. Shake off the possible first time NCAA appearances for Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore early.

Sara Hammond will need to continue the excellent full court performances we've seen lately and Shawnta Dyer and Emmonnie Henderson contribute significant bench minutes. Jude's hand will hopefully not be a factor in this game,,,if it is, Arica Carter needs to be ready to go. Bria Smith needs to show up.

Should be a fun one to watch. ESPN 2 is rolling out Bob Picozzi and Brooke Weisbrod for the call...two of their best in women's hoops coverage and Matt and AJ will handle the radio feed on WKRD 790.

We'll break it down on today's broadcast of CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO today at 11 a.m. Go Cards!

DAY ONE OF ACTION PRODUCES UPSETS AND HEARTBREAK

Sixteen teams have punched their tickets for round two in a first day of Tournament action that provided a few upsets and a few heartbreaking moments. How about Gonzaga and a win over #5 George Washington? The #11 Zags always play well, it seems, in the Big Dance and this one wasn't that big of a surprise to me. We loved Doug Bruno's DePaul squad as a under-ranked #9 seed and they delivered against Minnesota.

ACC member and #11 seed Miami got it done against Washington...we knew how tough the 'Canes were and this one didn't shock us too much. Chalk up a win for the "Q" as his Orange girls won a thriller against Nebraska. The dance continues for first year coach Jimmy Dykes and #10 Arkansas with a downing of Northwestern.

Those that are good mostly showed it yesterday as well. Kentucky decimated Tenn. St. Notre Dame demolished Montana and South Carolina romped Savannah St. Baylor had no trouble with Northwestern State.

Duke narrowly avoided a #4 vs. #13 upset by Albany thanks to a "3" by Rebecca Greenwell. California, Dayton, Mississippi State, Oregon State, Iowa all also won as the higher seeds.

Heartbreak for WKU against Texas...the Toppers leading most of the way before a late Longhorn run sent them to the sidelines. A unchallenged but missed three to win it for WKU with 4 seconds left. Some questioned the shot, they just needed a "two" to tie it...but WKU had made 12 threes in the game and the call was a sound one. Michelle Clark-Heard did a masterful job with the Hilltoppers this year.

The conferences that did well yesterday were the ACC with four wins in four games. (Miami, Notre Dame, Duke and Syracuse) and the SEC with four wins (Kentucky, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Arkansas). The losers were the Big 10 (1-2) and C-USA (0-2).

Sixteen more stories unfold today...

Our CARDINAL COUPLE PICK 'EM Contest is a closely challenged affair after Day One.

Sitting atop the leaderboard at 14-2 are Blue Lou, Cliff and Vicki P. Close behind at 13-3 are Paulie, Kenny S., Charlie Mac., Gary W., and K.Starks.

All but three contestants had nine or more wins. Game on !!

Congratulations to Louisville women's swimmer Kelsi Worrell for winning the NCAA Championship in the 100-Butterfly. Her 49.81 is the first time a woman has ever done the event in under 50 seconds. Best in the world!!! CARDS!!

The Cards are in sixth place in the NCAA Championships.

Louisville's 200-medley relay (Worrell, Tanja Kylliainen, Andrea Cottrell and Andrea Kneppers) finished second with a 1:35.75 to California's 1:35.15.

A PREVIEW OF BYU -- WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Gary Witherspoon, our West Coast hoops guru, brings us today's CARDINAL COUPLE article. He previews BYU, a team he regularly follow. Don't forget to get those NCAA WBB Tournament entries in by Friday morning! It's free, you could win a major award or a absolutely fabulous CARDINAL COUPLE T-SHIRT !! We'll have a couple of randomly drawn picks available for viewing in Thursday's article.

We present Gary's fine work here picture-free. Enjoy!

/////////////////////////////////////////////////

Here is a preview of BYU Louisville's first round opponent.  Game two against either South Florida or LSU is going to be tough.  LSU has been playing better now that they got things resolved with their star player.

If this seeding has any merit for the Cards, it is the opportunity to knock off Kentucky if they can get by either South Florida or LSU.

Gary

BYU:  Louisville’s Round One Opponent

If you remember last year’s tournament or caught the gist of the comments by the ESPN announcers Monday night indicating that BYU might be a threat to Louisville, you should be a little more at ease after reading this introduction to BYU.  BYU is one of the teams I follow somewhat closely.

Last year’s BYU team kind of took the tournament by surprise or by storm somewhat like Louisville did in 2013.  As a 12 seed, BYU trounced fifth seed NC State, dominating their post players and inside game.  And they handily beat fourth seed and big ten champ Nebraska before facing UConn in the round of 16.  BYU gave UConn the toughest game they faced all season.  BYU was the first team to lead UConn late in the first half.  UConn hit a shot with 15 seconds to go that gave UConn a 1 point lead going into half, but BYU hit a shot at the buzzer that would have taken the lead back except the shot was ruled late.

Most people thought BYU would fold in the early part of the second half, and UConn did come out smoking and took a four or five point lead, but BYU came back and to re-take the lead again at about the 17 minute mark.  It stayed close until around the 13 minute mark when UConn started a run that gave them a double digit lead, and this is when most teams fold, but BYU came back twice to get the lead back to single digits and eventually got it to 6 points with about 7 minutes to go.  Then Morgan Bailey got her fourth foul and when she went out, UConn started pouring it on and eventually got it to 19 points at the end.  But that 19 point win was the hardest fought win UConn had all season.

This game was no fluke.  Nether team played really well offensively.  BYU had the post players with whom to battle UConn.  Morgan Bailey, BYU’s power forward and niece of Thurl Bailey (NC STATE’s post on the national champion team in Survive and Advance), completely outplayed Breanna Stewart.  Stewart had three of her first five shots blockec by either Bailey or Jennifer Hamson, BYU’s 6’7” center.  Stewart had only one basket in the first half.  Bailey is an Emmonie Henderson type post player, but with a lot of savvy and greater shooting range.  Hamson stuffed Dolson twice and stuffed Stewart once and altered Stewart’s shot three times in the first half alone.

BYU also had a couple of great shooting and performing guards in Lexi Eaton and Kim Beeston.  Kylie Maeda, a 5’4” point guard, ran the offense.  Beeston and Hamson graduated (ran out of BB eligibility), so only Bailey, Eaton and Maeda remain as starters.  While Eaton and Bailey are as good as any of the players on Louisville’s team, BYU has become pretty much a two player team.  If Jeff Walz concentrates the defense on those two players, they can be bottled up and severely limited.  While Bailey is probably a better all-around player than any of Louisville’s four post players, Louisville has a four to one advantage on her because BYU has only Bailey and four small guards, and BYU has no one on the bench to replace Bailey.  Bailey shoots 52% from the field, and was the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, averaging around 18 points per game and 11 rebounds per game.

Lexi Eaton averages 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game.  She is a very versatile player who is best in the mid-range game, but she can also drive to the bucket and shoot the three as well, as can Bailey.   Eaton hits just over 40% of her three point attempts.  Eaton draws a lot of fouls, and gets a lot of free throws.  Bailey hit two threes over Stewart in the first ten minutes of the UConn game.  Lexi is kind of a combination of Bria Smith’s ability to drive to the basket, Mariya Moore’s offensive prowess and accurate shooting, and has a lot of the court savvy of Jude Schimmel.  But again Eaton will be just one great player against three for Louisville.

BYU lost their power forward and second leading rebounder to a season ending knee injury, and they are really hurting now in rebounding and defending the post.  Other than Bailey at 6’2”, BYU starters are 5’4”, 5’’5”, 5’9” and 5’10”.  I think they list each of these as an inch taller than this, but I think this is probably more accurate.  BYU has no one coming off the bench who can contribute much, unless the coach pulls a surprise and uses a player no one, except for those close to the program, even knows about.

They do have 6”2” Alohi Robins-Hardy who somewhat strangely sits the bench.  Early in the season as a freshman and as a three time state champion from Hawaii, Alohi showed she could handle the ball well, shoot accurately from all over the court and be a strong rebounder and passer.  However, she apparently is in the coach’s doghouse for now.  When asked about her a month or so ago, Coach Jeff Judkins simply said she has the potential to be a great player, but she was not in basketball playing shape.

Alohi was recruited by Judkins and given a basketball scholarship, but she said she wanted to play both volleyball and basketball, and he told her she could do that as Jennifer Hamson did.  However, during BYU’s NCAA volleyball run that took the volleyball team all the way to the Championship game with Penn State, Alohi was largely co-opted by the volleyball program and volleyball coach.  She was made the team’s starting setter at the NCAA regionals, and continued in that position all the way to the final championship game.  Robins-Hardy was an odd but very poised and very talented 6’2” freshman setter who could also block, hit, serve and dig.  That was a big role for someone just a few months out of high school.

BYU went into the NCAA volleyball tournament unseeded.  Volleyball only seeds 16 teams, and BYU became the first unseeded team to ever make it to the championship game.  With Robins-Hardy’s prowess and an already strong team, BYU beat four consecutive seeded teams who were all ranked in the top twelve in the nation.  They beat Arizona 3-0 in the round of 32, Florida State 3-1 in regional semis, Nebraska 3-0 in the regional finals and Texas 3-1 in the national semifinal.  They were finally stopped in the national championship game by eight time national champion Penn State.

I only mention that because BYU is getting a reputation as a giant killer in women’s sports.  As a result they have a bit of a mystique to which I think the ESPN announcers were alluding when they announced BYU as Louisville’s scary first round opponent.  But I do not think this BYU basketball team represents much of a threat to Louisville, unless Coach Jeff Judkins pulls Alohi Robins-Hardy off the bench as a big ace in the hole, like the volleyball coach did it its NCAA run.  I do not know if Alohi could transform the basketball team into a powerhouse as she transformed the volleyball team into a national powerhouse.  That move got the volleyball coach the National Coach of the Year Award.

I would really be shocked first to see the coach play her, and even more shocked to see her have that much impact on the team, but she did do it in volleyball.  During the summer she went with the basketball team on its once every four years foreign tour.  Then she started practicing with the volleyball team in September, but she did not play much in any of the volleyball team’s matches.

She started practicing with the BB team when BB started and did not travel with the volleyball team.  Late in the volleyball season, the coach was beginning to get disappointed with the volleyball team’s senior setter, and invited Alohi to volleyball practice to try setting.  Late in the season in a WCC match, BYU was getting beat in the third set with the score one to one in sets.  He put Alohi in as the setter and BYU pulled the match out 3-2, winning both of the two final sets.  After that Alohi started working out with the volleyball team preparing for the NCAA tournament.  Facing ACC powerhouse Florida State, the coach inserted Alohi as the setter after BYU lost the first set.  With Alohi setting, blocking, hitting, digging and serving, BYU went on to win three sets to one, and Alohi was from then on the starting setter on the team.

Alohi set up Jennifer Hamson for 31 kills in the next three sets against Florida State.  Hamson was Judkins former star basketball player who gave UConn fits and was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks in last year’s WNBA draft even though she was not committed to playing professional basketball and may opt for Olympic volleyball.  Judkins two basketball players won the volleyball coach the National Coach of the Year Award in his second season at around 30 years of age and in his second year as BYU’s volleyball coach.  The young volleyball coach also probably got a big pay raise while Judkins has been coaching almost 20 years at BYU.

Alohi might be caught in some athletic department politics as a result of all of these happenings.

Selection Monday -- WBB Cards dealt lousy hand in NCAA Tournament...Tuesday Cardinal Couple

NCAA TOURNAMENT A ROUGH FLIGHT FOR CARDINALS

Autograph signing at Selection Show
To get to Tampa this year for the NCAA WBB Final Four you must start in Tampa. If the statement sounds a little quixotic, the Louisville women's basketball team will start their 2015 NCAA Tournament in the same city where the finals will be played...sunny Tampa Bay, FL....with a 4 p.m. Saturday game against BYU. Against some huge windmills.

As Jeff Walz said, at least it's warm there. And if you're going to get screwed by the NCAA, a pleasant atmosphere and sunny skies makes the experience at least a little bearable.

The Selection Show at Cardinal Arena was attended well and the fans didn't have to wait long to find out that Louisville was headed south to start the quest. Walz and Matt Andrews handled the commercial breaks with speculation on the seedings.

The Cards, a #3 seed in the Albany region, were done no favors at all...starting out against the  Cougars...who won the WCC Conference Tournament over San Francisco and posted a 23-9 record.

If anyone could be more dismayed about the choice, it would probably be BYU head coach Jeff Judkins, who will be travelling 2300+ miles to probably be one and done. The Cougars were the #5 seed going into conference play. We'll dissect them a little more as the week goes on.

Where diabolical plots and insane theories are hatched...the
NCAA women's selection committee room. They must be stopped.
Awaiting the BYU vs. Louisville game will be the winner of the South Florida vs. LSU contest. USF and Jose Fernandez are never an easy "W" for Louisville and the Cards escaped with a 60-56 nail-biter win last year when they went running with the Bulls in the AAC Tournament. They did defeat USF by 20 at the KFC YUM! Center in the regular season.

This isn't the KFC YUM! Center and Jose's gals were 26-7, 15-3 in the AAC and 12-2 at home. They played UConn to a 70-56 loss in the AAC Tournament.

I asked "E" to smile like she had just grabbed a rebound
Should Louisville survive that gauntlet, it's off to Albany, NY to likely face Matthew Mitchell and the #2 UK Wildcats.

We all know about the Cats.

Waiting in the wings to challenged Louisville's quest to return to Tampa is no other than the UConn Huskies. The NCAA must have thought the games were being played in New Albany, IN...since they also stuck WKU in the region.

Coach Walz was as upbeat as he could be with the media after the Selection Show. He deserves an Oscar for that performance...because the Cards were stuck in the most difficult region in the tournament and quite possibly the toughest opening four-team pod. He did not speculate on what was beyond Saturday, the prime objective this time of year is one-at-a-time, survive and advance.

We'll have his, Jude Schimmel, Al Greener and Coach Sam P.'s comments on Selection Monday on our Saturday radio show.

It takes six wins to take the title. Louisville did put two six or more win streaks to together during the regular season. The task of getting back to Tampa after starting in Tampa is odds-prohibitive for the Cards...but so was beating Baylor a couple of years ago. WE all know what happened in that one...

Trust in the mad scientist to have the girls ready. Get ready for some fun basketball. And forget that the NCAA hammered the Cards again in the post-season selection brackets. If the Cards are good enough, they'll win. There are no easy wins this time of year. Especially if your team has a bird as a mascot and wears red.
