Replacing Myisha? -- Committee approach seems likely -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

HINES ALLEN IN WNBA DRAFT THIS EVENING

Hi, all! Ol' Dave-O David Watson bringing you the Thursday Morning edition of the Cardinal Couple. A chat last evening with Paulie indicated the pollens and bloomings in Louisville have been playing havoc with his sinuses and I gallantly volunteered to jump in the writer's chair and return to these legendary pages once again to provide a take on the joy and excitement of Louisville women's sports. 

As I thought about subject matter, it became increasingly clear to me that the thoughts and speculations of Louisville WBB fans were primarily concentrated on one major event that will take place this evening. The WNBA will welcome 36 players in to their fold via the draft. Three rounds of selecting college basketball and overseas players -- players who hope to make a roster, contribute to a team's success and proudly wear the jersey of a professional. 

Myisha Hines-Allen hopes to be one of the 36 who has her name called. From all indications, mock drafts, crystal ball readings and "wise guy" predictions -- she'll be a late first round or second round pick. That means it's possible she'll be on the ESPNU coverage after 8 p.m. -- since ESPN2 is only covering the first round. 

Look at what she's done in four years at Louisville: 

-- 2,028 points

-- 1,151 rebounds

-- WBCA All-American Honorable Mention

-- All ACC First Team

-- ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player

-- A part of 118 wins - the winningest player in UofL WBB history.

And, that's just a brief highlight list. She provided leadership, stability, kindness, community service, defense, enthusiasm, memorable press conferences, tutoring, wit and joy to a program that is grateful for her time here, undoubtedly going to miss her and, although realizing she won't be in those 2018-19 ranks -- it's a program that has a quite bright future. 

She joined a program for the 2014-15 program that has just gone 33-5 the previous year and made the ACC All-Freshman team while starting 28 of Louisville's 34 games. 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds while playing roughly half a game (20 minutes) for Jeff Walz. 

The rebounding numbers and the playing time increased each season she was part of the Cardinals. She became one of the two most mentioned Cards part of the "M&M" duo that we read about on these pages for three years. Then, just like the separation of the left and right Twix, that combination was broken up. 

Fans wondered about the leaving of Mariya Moore for quite some time. The stated reason was to play her final season at home, closer to her parents, with her sister at USC. Then, there were the rumors. 

Myisha didn't concern her self with all that very much -- there was another star shining very brightly out of the southern sky, this time -- and Asia Durr soon became part of the new formed and appearing with rave reviews "Nite-nite" and "Doo-blay" duo. 

The double-doubles kept racking up. She worked on team unity, taking Sam Fuehring and Jazz Jones under her strong, muscular wing and providing advice and guidance during their freshmen years. She remembered how Shawnta Dyer helped ease her transition to college and she "paid it forward". MHA was a teammate, in the truest sense. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one. She was there to see to the "many" needs. 

Where will she go, how soon? That is the Cardinals fans' question. The latest rumor is Atlanta grabs her in the second round as the 16th. pick and she is teamed up with another UofL great in Angel McCoughtry. We'll know by the time the clock strikes 10 tonight (to paraphrase from an old Cheap Trick song).

UofL WBB fans love to look ahead and speculate about "what's next?". In a season, in a roster -- it's a trait of the most devoted sports fans out there and a sure sign that these players, these student-athletes are not just November-April topic items but occupy our thoughts all 12 months instead of the aforementioned six. 

Paulie tells me that fans want to know who will replace her in the starting lineup. It is a valid question but -- I'll tell you -- there is no one person who can step in and do what Myisha's done at Louisville. Yes, there will be competition, front-runners, challengers to gain those minutes, to make up for those lost 14 points and almost 10 rebounds a game. Fans have their favorites and always will -- but I'll side with Coach Walz on this one and offer that it might be several players who fill in those graduated stats. 

No one, no one person, however, can ever replace Myisha Hines-Allen and what she has done and meant to Louisville.

Jeff Walz will tell your that there are no guarantees for starting roles. These roles are earned through hard work and results. Coach-speak aside, it is difficult to imagine that Asia, Jazz, Sam and Arica won't be on the court for the opening tip-off for the 2018-19 season. The cruel mistress named "injury" aside need not darken the Yum Practice Facility doorway is the fervent wish and hope here. 

Dana Evans is a strong candidate to fill in the numbers. Her play against Miss. St. gave us a glimpse into what she can become. Kylee Shook has the height and skills to breach the missing rebounding gap and points. Bionca Dunham has improved leaps and bounds since her freshman season and that stock will -- in all probability -- continue to go up. Sydney Zambrotta's shooting could reach new heights next year and she's already displayed solid defense and court awareness. Jessica Laemmle provides an emotional and hustle spark to the Cardinals' attack. Leave her alone at three-point range and you will pay dearly for the oversight.  

And, then, there are the five who will compete as "first timers". Lindsey Duvall was showing talents before her injury and subsequent red-shirt sidelined her. Loretta Kakala, the "burger girl" put in a lot of work during her red-shirt season to tone her body and game toward the college level. She has height and inside scoring skills.

Seygan Robins comes in as one of the most prolific players in Kentucky High School basketball history. She can light it up from the deep, inside and will be hard to stop in the Walz offense. Mykasa Robinson is a scorer, creator and lighting quick guard that will battle for a significant contributing role. Molly Lockhart has the height, body and determination to contribute greatly to the Cards' front line. 

So, you see, dear readers -- there are options galore and all tempting and viable to help the Cards next season and fill the gap of points, rebounds and hustle that Louisville loses in Myisha's graduation. Ultimately it comes down to who works the hardest and has success in game situations. And, how the coaches perceive and evaluate those in competition. 

It's more than that, though. Walz has built a wonderfully delightful, tight-knit, "all for one and one for all" roster at Louisville. Camaraderie, closeness, continuity and cohesiveness. They get it. They Kentucky state motto is "United We Stand, Divided We Fall". These young women stand quite united and, in the long run, that's so much more important and valuable than individual achievements and stat-sheet stuffing. As much joy in a teammate's achievements as your own.  

I wish I could have seen Myisha play more live. About the time she was headed to Louisville, the family and I were headed to Bradenton,Fl (via a disastrous, brief stop in Sarasota) from Muncie, IN. Yep, there is a huge difference in the drive to Louisville when your leaving from the Sunshine state compared to central Indiana. 

I followed her career via cable television, internet, this website and radio quite intently. When the team played in Florida, we'd be there -- often accompanied by Joe and Deloris Hill. An annual trip to Louisville to catch a couple of games each season. The opening two rounds in KFC YUM! Center. The unforgettable trip to the ACC Tournament this year and my and Mr. Hill's shenanigans. The sojourn to Talhassee. Those games against the USF Bulls in Tampa. 

I will miss you in a Louisville uniform, Myisha. Even though I never got to meet you. You are destined for greatness, though -- whether it is in professional sports, the business world or any other part of our society. 

I hope you end up with a WNBA team that appreciates your skills, your hard work and attitude and gives you a chance. I look forward to following your career and life from here on out. Thanks for the memories and I can't wait for the ones you're about to create.

KHSAA and Women's basketball tip off luncheon

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Jenny O'Bryan is feeling better and back to bring us the Thursday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE. Today she discusses the questionable decision of the KHSAA to eliminate handshakes after contests and the Louisville WBB luncheon. Good to see her up and around again! )


It’s good to be back!  I’ve been under the weather with a nasty respiratory bug and it has kept me sidelined.  Any ramblings below you disagree with, well, just consider it a side effect of my being oxygen deprived lately. 

Speaking of oxygen deprived, file this under “hair brained ideas that one wishes they had the excuse of oxygen deprivation”.  On Tuesday the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) released a statement of some variety doing away with the handshake between teams, after competition is complete.    The reasoning given was due to two dozen fights breaking out (during this process) over the three previous years.

Just what exactly the first release stated, and how it was read and interpreted, apparently left a lot of room for misinterpretation.  By nights end ESPN was talking about it, it made national headlines, and was on Good Morning America, Whoopi was talking about it on her show, and the list goes on and on.  Oxygen deprived maybe? 

Releases and re-releases trying to clean up the PR nightmare indicated the handshake wasn’t banned, it would just not be overseen and supervised by the referees.  Teams would have to monitor and supervise the handshake and if any fights arise they are to be reported to KHSAA where a fine can/will be issued. 

Good grief.  What a mess!   When I first heard it on the news I immediately had a negative outburst about the decision.   Sure enough, Tuesday night at the kiddos volleyball game (which I did not attend for having been under the weather), no handshake.   I am still shaking my head over this.  Actually, I wonder if perhaps I have violated a KHSAA rule here, no head shaking allowed either? 

This will all work itself out, I believe.  The negative media attention already has spin doctors at work to right the ill-conceived and ill received original release.   

 

In the meantime, let’s keep shaking hands, folks.  It is about respect.  It is about competition.  It is about humbleness in victory and graciousness in defeat.  At a time where we are already helping to foster “soft” athletes/young adults (see cardinal couple commentary on Lacrosse and disgruntled former athletes) do we also want to foster poor sportsmanship?   Heavens above, the youth of today will be running this nation when we are seniors.  Do we really want a bunch of thin skinned, soft, entitled, I’ll win or go home crybabies governing us?  I know I don’t!    Let’s get back to basics here.  Not everyone wins.  Not everyone gets a trophy.   Let’s shake hands and work harder so we can be the victor next time!

In other news the Louisville Women’s Basketball Tip-off Luncheon was on Wednesday afternoon.  It was a packed house of 800+ folks at the Crown Plaza Hotel, a new venue for the luncheon.  Presumably the luncheon outgrew the KFC YUM Center and called for a bigger venue.  I have to say I was pleased with the move, with a bit more elbowroom amongst the fans.

It was business as usual with Coach Jeff Walz being the keynote speaker.    Each of the players were able to introduce themselves to the fans, with some humor peppered in from them.  A few notable comments:  freshman Emmonnie Henderson is studying civil engineering (WOW!), Sophomore Megan Deines is still undecided in a major so “I am just doing basketball”, and senior Tia Gibbs got a laugh from the crowd introducing herself as an “8^th year senior. “

Fans were treated to highlights from last years improbable run to the championship game.  If that video does not get a little tinge in your step or tickle in the bottom of your belly, you’re rooting for the wrong team!  It furthers this fans anticipation of the season, and the team and coaching staff are ready!

Make no mistake, U of L Women’s Basketball is not happy just making it to the final game, the goal is to win that last game.  The teams effort during the off season (workouts and skill development) is said to have reflected that, as well as that of the coaching staff who have spent an enormous amount of time out on the recruiting trail. 

It was an exciting atmosphere, one where you could feel the energy in the room.   In talking about this upcoming season we were reminded that the Cardinals return 4 starters from last years National Championship runner up, and add injured players Asia Taylor, Shawnta Dyer and Tia Gibbs to the mix.  This team is undoubtedly one of the deepest talent at all positions, let’s just keep them all healthy this year.   Now that is something to get excited about!   

The woman who sat next to me is a new season ticket holder this upcoming season, and was a first time attendee at the luncheon.  She told me that after going to a couple of games each of the past two seasons it was too much fun, and such a great value for the entertainment that she and 3 girlfriends bought season tickets. 

That story of my tablemate brings me to the most exciting news of the day, which was Coach Jeff Walz announcing that Louisville was “ just announced as a 2014  NCAA Regional Host” (actually, we were given about a 2 hour heads up on this, the official announcement was not made until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday).  

This is huge news and very exciting for Louisville women’s basketball and for fans of women’s basketball in general.   This means Louisville could, in theory at least, play the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games in front of a home crowd!   What a HUGE advantage that gives this team to make yet another run at the Final Four, which is down the road a bit in Nashville.  It is pretty exciting to think how little the team may have to travel to make it all the way to the championship game again! 

Coach Walz issued a challenge to fans, and we will repeat it hear often, to get your seats for the Regional round of play as soon as tickets become available.  Do NOT wait to see if Louisville makes it, by that time it is too late, as you are likely to be seated in the upper decks of the arena.   (As an aside, this past season when Louisville hosted the 1^st and 2^nd round action, I bought my seats the day they went on sale.  At that point I was able to handpick my seats, and I was able to keep my exact season ticket seats, which are pretty frickin’ awesome.  Moral of the story here is to buy early and buy many!)

 

I have been ready for basketball season since about the first of May.  But for some of you more tempered fans, the event had to stoke the fire and have you ready for the season.   The season is 26 days away, with an exhibition game on Tuesday, November 5.  Are you ready?  I know I am .

A few nuggets (with commentary) on UofL womens' basketball.

- Sherrone Vails, last year's starting center, had knee surgery in July and her status is up and the air for the 2013-14 season. She may have to redshirt. Last season, Vails started 28 of UofL's 37 games...averaging 15.6 minutes per game, 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds. We hope Sherrone heals completely and, if not available this year, comes back strong in the 2014-15 campaign. We hope it doesn't hinder her promising fashion runway model career, either.

- Davionna Holmes has left the team. She is looking to
find another school to play for...she will

transfer. She came to campus to play volleyball and was dismissed from Anne's Kordes squad. She was injured before she ever stepped on the court for Louisville WBB. This news may be the worst kept secret of the off-season. We were getting "rumors" and "insider" stuff for a week before Coach gave out any official notice.

We wish her well wherever she ends up and hope she can become a valuable contributor and follow team rules. No official explaination or reason was given for her decision to depart. If it was her decision. Maybe sometimes, that is best. Another "big" that leaves the Lady Cards.

- Tia Gibbs is back to full speed and looking good in the gym, according to our sources who have watched her in informal shoot-arounds. Gibbs was an integral part of Louisville's march through Cincinnati a couple of years ago when the Cards defeated Xavier and Vanderbilt. When healthy, Gibbs is a lock-down defender and has a good range of shooting. Has it really been two full seasons since we last saw her on the court? Bring it, Butler Bear...we're ready to see you tear it up.





- Asia Taylor is also healthy and going 100% on the court.
Taylor was the best jumper on the squad in the 2011-12.
 Asia's been "through it" on the injury docket over the last five years. We're hoping for a full and pain-free season for the Columbus, OH climber.
She is Sonja's favorite player. Yep, that's Sonja doing the "happy dance" because "31" is healthy and having fun.

A Tayy will be a success at whatever she attempts in life. We would love to see her have a fun and successful senior season. She can help this team a lot if she stays healthy.

-Shawnta Dyer is on schedule with her rehab after blowing out her ACL after 11 games last season. She was a force inside in those nine games she played and if she can return to that skill level...it gives UofL another powerful paint player and excellent rebounder.

Dyer averaged 19.5 minutes last season...scoring 7.4 ppg, grabbing 5.5 boards and shooting 53% from the floor. The only knock we can find in her game is free throw shooting..which struggled to get over 50%. We assume she's had plenty of time to practice those...

So, what was 16 is now 15 and possibly 14. Still plenty of players to go around. Good reports on the three who had to watch last year. A group of new and old. Of experienced and promising. And Shoni.

LOUISVILLE Lacrosse announced their fall schedule for 2013 yesterday and it involves some travelling for Kellie Young's squad. They start the journey in Boston, MA with a match against Boston University on Sept. 28th. They travel to Cambridge, MA the next day to take part in the Harvard tournament. Following that, LAX goes to Baltimore for competition against Johns Hopkins University on Oct. 6th.

Louisville does get one home exhibition match against Michigan on Oct. 12th. They end the fall slate at Duke on Oct. 27th.

The Louisville lacrosse banquet is on a Friday night this fall...Oct 11th. We'll get details on that as they become available.

We'll also have an interview with Coach Young on our Saturday CARDINAL COUPLE RADIO HOUR this week. She is one of four (possibly five) coaches we'll have words from this Saturday. You don't want to miss Saturday's show!

( Tuesday brings us Sandy Walker's transition fast-break through the world of Womens' Sports at UofL. Our hearts go out to Shawnta Dyer, the versatile Cardinal front-liner done for the season with an ACL and MCL injury to her left knee.)

TONIGHT AT THE KFC YUM! CENTER

Our 9-2 Louisville women return home tonight as part of an away and home agreement with Washington State and also welcomes the return of leading rebounder Sara Hammond.  Tipoff is 7:00 and begins a 3 game home stand which will complete the 2012 calendar of games for this year’s team. The Cougars 3-5 record is deceptive as they are fresh off a Saturday 62-55 upset win over 20^th ranked Ohio State.  Last year it took a Shawnta’ Dyer breakout 16 point game and a late game surge by the Louisville team to pull off a 75-71 win.   

Dyer is done for the season. An ACL and MCL injury to her left knee...suffered in practice Sunday will have her on the sidelines for the rest of the season. A starter of late on the front line, Dyer had 14 points in the Cards loss to Oregon. WE wish her a full and complete recovery.

ANGEL CONTINUES TO GIVE BACK TO LOUISVILLE

 

Angel McCoughtry, Louisville’s undisputed all time top Louisville player is giving back to Louisville. She has founded the Angel McCoughtry Dream Foundation, who announced a personal contribution of a $15,000 grant to fund educational and learning.  Information is available at her website http://angel35dreamfoundation.com/.  “AMDR is committed to helping youth gain a positive experience by choosing sports as an instrument to compete athletically, as they strive to be enriched as lifetime learners.” Her “Team Angel Basketball Camp included a stop in Louisville last August.

SOFTBALL

 

Saturday January 26 at 7:30 is scheduled for the 2013 Softball Team’s Class Act Federal Credit Union Bullpen Club Dinner. Olympian Danielle Lawrie will be the keynote speaker which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
 

Last year’s team completed a program-best 55-5 season which included winning  of the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles.   10^th year head Coach Sandy Pearsall’s team opens this year’s season at the UNLV Sportco Kickoff Classic Feb. 8-10. Louisville returns seven starters and 12 letter winners.

Margret Harris

At the team's December 7 first meet of the year Louisville’s Margret Harris won the 60m finals behind a collegiate-best 60m mark of 7.38. Her time is currently the third fastest at the Division I level. The Lancaster, Texas, native also took second with a leap of 5.60m/18-4.50

Earlier this month Margret Harris and Michelle Theophille
