What We Know on UofL Furloughs

It was already announced that UofL planned on eliminating positions and having furloughs with other positions.  Yesterday was 'The Day' for those in Athletics to find out.

UofL has kept this one under wraps pretty tight.  They did not release a list of those affected but a few of them posted about it or reached out to one of us.

I can confirm three folks in the photographer/videography area that had their positions completely eliminated.  There is one position with football I can confirm got let go.

Jeff Reinking was the senior photographer.  Fred Reynolds was the senior videographer/multimedia content producer.  Clay "Point" Barnes was a videographer/multimedia content producer.

Assistant director of marketing, Chelsea Bemis was an assistant director of marketing.

Rachel Harris, who was with recruiting for football, was let go.

No coaching staff personnel have been furloughed yet, that we can tell. The furloughs saved UofL Athletics around $5 million dollars, according to reports.

There is also talk that an SID or two may have been let go.  Marketing is also rumored to have taken
a big hit.

There are plenty more people who may have been let go or had their positions furloughed that we will hear about in the upcoming weeks.

I scoured through the GoCards staff directory but it has not been updated.

Some of these people were good friends of mine, Paulie and the Cardinal Couple staff and we will miss them. We hope we can say "further down the road, my friends" instead of "goodbye".

I do know that the money owed to Bobby Petrino played a factor in the decision with budget cuts.

Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the COVID-19, budget cuts, and layoffs.



Muffet Retires

Muffet McGraw announced on Twitter yesterday that she is retiring.  She had been the head women's basketball coach at Notre Dame for 33 years.

"It has been my great honor to represent the University of Notre Dame these past 33 years, but the time has come for me to step down as your head basketball coach," McGraw said in her Twitter statement.

Many UofL fans, like myself, expressed joy at the news.  Muffet was notorious among UofL fans for several reasons, including not recognizing Asia Durr as the ACC Player of the Year a couple years ago.

Notre Dame was coming off a 13-18 record in the 2019-2020 season and was not going to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame quickly announced the hiring of Nicole Ivey within an hour of Muffet's statement, meaning that this was not a spur of the moment decision, and all parties had known for quite some time.  Ivey is a former player and assistant coach for Notre Dame, and was most recently an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies.


McGraw had a base salary of $1 million, but had the potential to make up to $2 million with bonuses
and incentives.  Budget cuts among athletic departments may have played a part in her departure, as Notre Dame Athletics is most likely trying to find ways to save money.

Or, as I like to think of it, Muffet McGraw couldn't handle a losing season and constantly finishing behind UofL and called it quits.  She is worthy of her Hall of Fame honors based on her accomplishments over her 33 years.

The "new" era for Notre Dame women's basketball has begun.

Not burying Tom yet...but is the Fat Lady getting ready to sing? -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

I had pretty much made a vow not to write anymore about the Jurich saga and UofL until after the 18th. of October. That's an important date to remember because it is when the board of trustees is going to review the situation and evaluate Tom's performance. 

I changed my mind, though, after the Courier Journal came out with articles about Tom's financial situation and how the athletic department wasn't turning a profit. I also got a phone call from a well-meaning relative in North Carolina ( I have several down there and they're pretty much equally divided between TarHeels and Blue Devils...except for the one cousin who is a big Elon backer.) This particular relative that called can't understand why Jurich isn't gone already. I asked him about how he was doing in those sham classes he had enrolled in at Chapel Hill. 

Let's face it. We are hostage in our fair city to a newspaper that prefers the University 80 miles to the east of us. (Not, not Transylvania). It's why I cancelled my subscription, except for Sundays, years ago and I'm about to end that as well. Millennials and others talk of "cutting the cord" when it comes to dropping cable, dish or commercial television. I'm ready to "dis the delivery" completely now. The Internet and cable have made daily newspaper, even Sunday newspaper needs obsolete. 

I wonder if Kelsi wears a waterproof music player when she is
practicing.?And if she figured out how to program it if she does.

Technology, wow....Worldwide would insert here. He cut the cable years ago and dissed the delivery. He seems OK. I bet he could also figure out how to transfer musical files from my computer to the new waterproof music player I won in a raffle. For me, it was shortly around paragraph two in the instructions that I ran into trouble. I know what "Windows" is. I found "This PC" on my laptop, I found the "Removable Disk" folder there.   I thought I transferred the musical files I wanted to the device. I even got a computer confirmation telling me I could unplug the USB cable from the device. 

But I got no music. Just the lady's voice complementing me on my new acquisition and choice of product. 

PAYING THE PIPER

Anyway, (Steady, Paul...concentrate and get back on track. =) we were on Jurich. Yes, Tom gets paid well. Why shouldn't he? The C-J showed figures and I honestly figured he was making more than that. In our society, if you perform well, get great results and are admired by your peers and bosses...it usually, and well should, translate out into $$$$$ increases. 

Take a look at the Belknap Campus when I was there in the 70's. Not many vestiges of that sleepy little college campus remain. Take a look a Floyd Street and Denny Crum Overpass since the late 90's. You see growth, success and sign of a vibrant college campus. Take a look at where Louisville has gone in conference alignment. Louisville was a proud member of the MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) when I was there. They've progressed through the Metro, C-USA, Big East and AAC to the ACC. This is hard for fans from some other ACC programs to understand. Duke, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia, for example, have known the ACC and nothing else for a very long time .

How did athletics get there? Under the leadership of Tom Jurich. Do you remember when Maryland left the ACC? Do you remember who most pundits thought would replace them? Connecticut. Cincinnati. Louisville was a solid "show" bet here. Very few gave the Cards a shot at membership. 

How do you like UofL now? Who engineered the victory? Tom Terrific, that's who. The man is worth every dollar that is provided to him. How quickly would have UConn or UC tossed $20 mil at him five years ago to guide them to major conference affiliation?  If this board had the sense God gave a goose, if they're listening to the high profile, high dollar donors to the program and if they'll look at the overall picture and not just the last few months the choice should be as clear as the Montana sky. Keep Tom. Unfortunately, the board is a sham, Postal is an interim puppet for who knows what interest and the board would have difficulties reviewing the performance of a worm on a fishing hook, much less an athletic director's performance. 

UOFL ATHLETICS FINANCIAL STATUS

The Courier-Journal also took task to the financial situation of the UofL Athletic Department. Why aren't they showing a profit?   

This could be the four-iron that hits the green and sends Tom back to the clubhouse eliminated from match play. $7 million dollar subsidy to UofL Athletics in 2014-15 from the University prevented a $4.6 deficit. Again in 2015-16, helping reverse a $4.4 million deficit. 

UofL pays their coaches quite well. There are several "Million Dollar Men" on campus. Pitino was one, Petrino is another. Add Dan McDonnell and Jeff Walz to that exclusive fraternity. But, you pay good money for quality coaching. You can't control the idiocy of the coach, however, and that's why Rick took his third strike and walked back to the dugout with his bat on his shoulder. 

People rail about the $1.3 million dollar gender equity commitment subsidy provided to Athletics from the University. It's the best money spent on campus. It represents tuition paid by non-scholarship female athletes who otherwise might not attend the University if not for the chance to play. The University gives this money to the Athletic Department. The next time you see a freshman attack score on the pitch or a speedy right-fielder make a running catch of a dying quail flyball...thank UofL for this policy and payment, 

In their first two years in the ACC, Athletics spent $10.6 given to them by the University. 

Look at these schools: 

-- Houston spent $36.3 million in University money and $15 million in student fees. 

-- Memphis spent $21.5 million in University money and $15 million in student fees. 

-- Cincinnati spent $25 million and their athletic department is $140 million dollars in debt. 

And WE have a spending problem?  Seriously? 

I hope that, in ten days, the board wakes up and smells the coffee. I hope they retain Tom Jurich. However, I'm getting feedback of this "Carrie Nation, clean out everything" agenda the board is supposedly on. From more than one or two sources. 

This website is here today and you are reading it, thanks in part to some very encouraging words I received from Tom when Sonya and I were first considering it. 

And, no, I do not receive a penny from the athletic department, general fund, gender subsidy, university coffers or Knights of the Round Table. I can't even get a gratis Handicapped parking permit. Our fund raising drive is in November. I'll make some serious choices about our future after that. My pockets aren't as deep as they used to be because of a new hip, ailing knee and a few more little mysteries of life. 

I hope the board will listen to the voices around them. The donors, coaches, staff, student-athletes and fans who want Tom to stay.

Toss interim President Postal in the dumpster and re-instate Jurich. Do the wise and right thing, Board of Trustees. You've cleared the bad apples out of the bag, including the $44 million dollar, 17-second man who had 'no knowledge' of strippers, scandals, payments, shoe deals and/or the student TARC bus schedule on campus. And, this guy had a golf cart and Sandy Pearsall doesn't. It boggles the imagination.

Keep Tom Jurich.  You don't have to be a scientist to figure out that this a successful formula.  You don't need a trip to Goobertown to realize how well we got it in Louisville. Tell the fat lady in the stage wings not to grab the microphone yet and we're NOT ready for her to belt out a tune yet. 


Do the right thing, Board of Trustees. Don't waste good. Keep Tom.

Lacrosse, Kakala, Expansion and Papa....FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

LACROSSE FALLS TO VIRGINIA 13-12 

A heart-breaker last night in Richmond Virginia...Louisville Lacrosse going to sudden victory against the Virginia Cavaliers in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in Richmond, VA. and losing 13-12. 

The Cards came out strong and led 2-0 in the early going. Virginia regrouped, though, and rolled off three straight scores to take the lead. UofL roared back with a 3-0 run their own and led 5-3 after 10 minutes of exciting, bang-bang action on the pitch. 

Louisville led 7-5 with nine minutes remaining in the half but went scoreless the rest of the way and the Wahoos tied it up at 7-7 as the teams took the midway break. The Cards were controlling the draw control 10-5 and Brittany Read was defending the net with all her skills...with eight saves in the first 30 minutes. 

UofL took the early lead in the second half when Meghan Siverson got her third score but Virginia came back with three straight goals to go up 10-8. With 20:22 to play, an unfortunate and controversial second yellow card was awarded to Siverson and the Cards leading scorer for the game and draw control specialist was disqualified from the contest. It gave the Cards something to rally around...and Louisville scored four straight goals to take a 12-10 lead with 9:40 to play. Kellie Young's squad was still up 12-11 with 1:16 to play...but UVA managed the tying goal and held the Cards scoreless over the next 76 seconds to force the extra session. 

Virginia won the overtime draw control and 47 seconds later, Kasey Behr fired a steamer from the left side of the net past Read to give the Wahoos the victory.

Kellie Young: 

"We left our hearts on the field but needed a little more grit to secure the win."  

The Cards now await their fate in the NCAA women's lacrosse selection show Sunday at 9 p.m. Louisville looks to be on the bubble for making the tournament. 26 teams, including 13 conference champions, will take place in a single elimination process...the six top-seeded getting a first round bye. 




RETTA KAKALA NAMED TO CA ALL STATE TEAM

2017 Cardinal signee Loretta Kakala was named to the 2016-17 All - California Girls All State second team. The 6'3" center from Manteca High School comes to Louisville as the #2 ranked post in the nation by ESPNW and has impressed the coaches with her football, rebounding and aggressiveness in the paint. 

On coming to Louisville...Retta K had this to say: 

" I want the Louisville fans to know I am excited about coming there and will work hard to make everyone proud of me and be a part of a great group of teammates." 

She'll get that chance right away, it would appear. She'll be the only center listed on the roster and the second tallest player on the 2017-18 team...only Kylee Shook at 6'5" is taller. With Shook being projected as a possible high post player or wing, the Cards will need someone besides Myisha Hines-Allen to bang the boards. Sam Fuehring and Bionca Dunham round out the projected front line for the squad. 


EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENTS

UofL plans to construct an $8 million TV projection studio as part of the ACC Network. The new facility will be home to video control rooms, studios and editing rooms. The facility will have the capabilities to host live shows at all venues for games and have access for live player and coaches interviews. 

New balconies and bleachers are scheduled for Cardinal Arena...where Volleyball will play their 2017 home games. The women's basketball team will move to the "Little Yum" and expansion and remodeling is scheduled for that facility. New turf is coming for the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium and the Trager indoor facility. 

A video wall and ribbon board has been approved for Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and a private donation has funded a $9.5 million dollar expansion and renovation at baseball's Jim Patterson Stadium.

Good things on the way. Tom keeps building. 



SOFTBALL STARTS THREE GAME SET WITH VA.

Louisville Softball starts their final home game series today against the Virginia Cavaliers. First pitch for today has been switched from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m...the stated reason was concerns with expected rain this evening. Louisville (26-17, 9-6) 

The Cavs (21-19, 8-13) come in fresh off a win at George Washington and a three game sweep over Notre Dame at South Bend. They are on a seven-game win streak...tops in the ACC right now. 

Louisville is a perfect 6-0 against UVA since joining the ACC. 

Jordan McNary has reached base for Louisville via a walk or hit in 26 or her last 28 games. She is a perfect 12-12 in stolen bases this season. 

Nicole Pufahl leads Louisville in hitting with a .372 average and has reached base safely in her last 17 games. Last year, in Charlottesville, the Cards swept the Wahoos 2-0, 7-2 and 2-1. 
PAPA JOHN LEAVES BOARD

"Papa John" Schnatter has resigned from the University of Louisville's athletic association board . The announcement was made at yesterday's board meeting..where athletic direction Tom Jurich and athletic financial director Kevin Miller outlined what was going on with the athletic department and fielded questions...also with President Greg Postal. 

One thing that wasn't revealed was why Papa decided to withdraw from the board. The resignation comes a couple of weeks after he accused the athletic department of being "invisible" and needed to solve their crisis for the good of the University. 

Papa did not elaborate on what items the athletic department needed to work on or what they needed to do to become more visible. Making a sweeping statement like that and then not explaining it leads to a lot of speculation and media questioning. We won't get into the speculation here...only Papa can explain what he said and that may never happen...but the athletic department has been far from being "invisible" and Jurich showed once again yesterday that he is committed and continuing growth for the programs and facilities at Louisville. Jurich commented: 

"I wouldn't trade my staff for anyone in the world and I most certainly would not replace any of my head coaches for anyone in the world...they're the best in college athletics." 

His viewpoint seems pretty viable and visible to me. Always has.

Cats clobber Cards 10-1...Papa John questions Athletics leadership at UofL -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

BATTLE OF BLUEGRASS A BLOWOUT

Kentucky Softball came to Ulmer Stadium Wednesday night for batting practice and decided to make a game of it while they were at it. The Cats pounded Maryssa Becker and Megan Hensley for 10 runs and nine hits...while Louisville could only manage four hits and one run against UK's Meagan Prince.



Sandy Pearsall explains: 

"We started out the game giving up some walks and committing errors and that didn't help us. We brought Becker in and she just didn't pitch well for us today... This is over, it's past and we've got a lot more games to play" 

And, such is the game of softball...where a disappointing loss on a Wednesday can't be dwelled upon too long...the weekend brings an important ACC series against Virginia Tech. 

UK touched Cards starter Megan Hensley for a run each in the first and second innings. Wearing a protective mask on her face because of a broken nose...and suffering from a lingering shoulder injury...Hensley was pulled from the circle after two innings, which Pearsall had planned to do before the game, and Becker took the ball. 

And the Cats greeted her with four runs to blow the contest wide open. 

Hensley did return to the circle to start the fourth inning...due to Becker's ineffectiveness...and finished the game in the circle for the Cards...allowing four more runs in the final three innings. 

Hensley had a hand in the Cards lone score. Her double to left-center in the fifth inning set up a Jenna Jordan RBI single that scored pinch-running Celine Funke. Jordan had two hits, half the Cards game total, in the contest. 

UK put up four more runs in the top of the sixth to set the final tally and a run-rule situation for the Cards in the bottom of the sixth. Louisville failed to put any runs up. 

A good crowd, almost a 1000 on hand for this one under perfect weather conditions. A scattering of blue in the seats who had the chance to celebrate the majority of the contest.

Quite a few Cardinal student-athletes on hand for the game. Mariya Moore , Taylor Johnson, Kylee Shook and Bionca Dunham all spotted in attendance from UofL basketball. Inger Katrine Bjerke (K.B.)...women's soccer standout defender...and her always big smile graced the seats as well. 

The 10-1 win is the largest margin of victory by UK in the series...surpassing a 9-1 win back in 2001. 

You shake it off, get in a little extra hitting practice move onto the next one. Pearsall seemed confident that there wouldn't be any problem with the team's motivation attitude for the crucial weekend series in Blacksburg. PAPA JOHN TURNS UP THE HEAT ON CARDINAL ATHLETICS LEADERSHIP


"Papa" John Schnatter...Papa John's Pizza founder and CEO...has questions about visibility, it seems. Not in his own situation...he often is the main actor in his pizza commercials...but in terms of the UofL Athletic Department. Schnatter, who is also a member of the UofL Board of Trustees used the Wednesday meeting to express his viewpoints. 

Schnatter says that the leadership of the UofL Athletics Department is "invisible" to the University's governing board. Tom Jurich, of course, is at the top of the Athletics department as Athletics Director. He also said: 



"The athletics thing scares me...until you fix athletics, you cannot fix this university." 

Whoa, Nellie! Let's get a few things straight here, pizza man. 

Athletic funding is a separate area from University funding, sir. The new football stadium renovation funding is not a drain on the university and is privately funded. And...every dollar spent by the Athletics department returns at least a two dollar return in profitability. 

Tom Jurich did not comment on Papa's remarks. Kenny Klein, a spokesman for the athletics association did issue a statement via e-mail. 

"Tom's leadership of our athletic department is well documented, has been highly successful, is fiscally sound, transparent and speaks for itself. The UofL Athletics board of directors has governed our department and been involved in all decisions." 

Tom Jurich is quite accessible, in my opinion. I'm sure he'd be glad to appear before the university's governing board and show the incredible successes of and answer any questions about UofL Athletics.

John has been, and will continue to be, a very large financial donor to University of Louisville athletics. A lot of the things that Louisville athletics have been able to build and create were backed with dollars by John. The UofL Athletics community is very grateful for his financial generosity.  Maybe John needs to stick to what he knows, though. Sauce, toppings, funding and making TV commercials, instead of attacking and questioning one of the most successful, if not the most successful athletic departments in the nation and their leader. 

Don't confuse pepperonis for black olives, Mr Schnatter. Athletic expenditures do not increase the cost of a student attending college. They're two separate areas. Breadsticks and garlic sauce. 

Just smile and sign a check, John. Keep using better ingredients but stop busting the best A.D. in the business. Tom and his crew know what their doing. Trust in Tom. Smile when you walk by those booths in the football stadium and the KFC YUM! Center that sell your pies.

And, thanks for all you do with your dollars and donations. Just leave the opinions off this product.

University of Louisville Ticket Policies Are a Problem -- Tuesday CARDINAL COUPLE

EDITOR'S NOTE:

( While Paulie pedals to Greensboro today, Worldwide steps up to the keyboards and brings you today's CARDINAL COUPLE entry. These are important words, read them carefully.) 

Before We Get Started...

I have written numerous times on this site, and stated many times on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour, that the University of Louisville Athletic Department does an absolutely fantastic job of supporting its women's sports programs...perhaps the best of any school in the country.  I stand by those statements, they remain true.

But There's a Problem...

Any organization, when it stakes a major part of its identity to a particular goal, needs to constantly evaluate its policies, procedures, and even internal culture, to ensure that they are actually furthering the organization towards its goal.  Such an organization must remain vigilant to the existence of policies, even long-standing policies, that work counter to that goal.  To not be vigilant in examining policies, procedures, and culture that are counter to the stated goals risks an organization becoming blind to those and other obstacles in working towards those goals.

The UofL Athletic Department and Tom Jurich have stated publicly many times that they have a goal to treat their women's sports programs equally to the men's.  By and large, they do, but there's a (now) glaring gap in this goal.

Paulie posted a Cardinal Couple Special Report on Friday about UofL offering likely 1st and 2nd round Women's NCAA tickets to Men's Basketball season ticket holders starting Friday, and that Women's Basketball Season ticket holders would not get the option to order until yesterday (Monday).

First, Some Clarification...

Men's Basketball Premium season ticket holders, which, as I understand it, are seats in sections 105, 106, 107, 115, 116, and 117 (the 6 sideline sections in the lower bowl) have right of first refusal for all events at the KFC Yum! Center (not just UofL events). This the reason that they were offered tickets prior to Women's Basketball season ticket holders.  Not all Men's Basketball season ticket holders were offered early access to tickets, just the ones with Premium seats in those six sections.

And Yet, This is Still a Problem...

In announcing the availability of pre-sales of tickets to Women's Basketball season ticket holder, UofL clearly took some great pains to clarify the above, apparently with the thinking that this obviates any problem.

They couldn't be more wrong.

Just on the face of it, some Men's Basketball season ticket holders are given this "Premium" status, while equivalent Women's Basketball season ticket holders are not.

Beyond that, the result is that some Men's Basketball Season Ticket holders, some of whom may never have been to a single UofL Women's Basketball game (or perhaps to any Women's or Girls Basketball game at any level and any school), received priority in pre-ordering tickets for this event, and will, as a result, have better seats than nearly all of the faithful Women's Basketball season ticket holders who have cheered and supported this team throughout the whole season.

(It should be noted that on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour on Saturday, I speculated that tickets would be allocated in CAF priority points order...I was wrong.  When you pre-order your tickets, you get to pick your seats.)  Of course, some of those Men's Basketball Premium season ticket holders are also Women's Basketball season ticket holders, and that is wonderful, but it doesn't eliminate the problem that some, perhaps many, are not.

This policy has been in place for all of the roughly six years that the KFC Yum! Center has been in operation, and by and large, it hasn't presented a problem until now.  And because the UofL Athletic Department did not remain vigilant in their examination of policies that might be counter to their stated goal of treating their Women's Sports programs equally to the Men's, I fear they have become blind to the obstacle that this presents to furthering that goal.

One can forgive Tom Jurich and others in the Athletic Department for not recognizing the threat to their stated goal of equality presented by this policy, but it has been spotlighted at this point.  To continue to leave this policy in place, as it currently exists, makes a mockery of their goal.

Tom Jurich has been great for the University of Louisville Athletic department over the years, but this situation is untenable and the Athletic Department and Tom Jurich need to take a long, hard look at this situation and see what an injustice it is

-- to the loyal Women's Basketball fans who have supported this team to the point of being the 3rd largest average attendance in the nation again this year.

-- to the team and the Women's Basketball program who may very well lose some of the loyal fans over this and will likely result in UofL fans in prime seats that will be surprised to see that the Women's game uses quarters instead of halves!

Tom Jurich, you need to fix this, and I mean really fix it, not just try to explain it away.  This policy is a problem, even if you refuse to see it.  It is disrespectful to the Women's Basketball fans and the Women's Basketball program itself.  It is not a communication problem, it is not a public relations problem, it is a ticketing policy problem and it needs to be really fixed.

Women's Basketball fans, I would encourage you to continue to voice your displeasure about this situation.  The ticket office phone number is (502)852-5151.  The webpage for the UofL Athletic Department directory is http://www.gocards.com/staff.aspx  You might look through that list and consider who else should hear about this.
