Louisville Louie Awards

Last night was the annual Louie Awards, where Louisville Athletes recognizes various Louisville student-athletes and teams. The awards usually run on a calendar year and not a school year since several spring sports are still in action for a little while longer, so we did see some spring 2023 accomplishments make the list. Spring 2024 accomplishments are not eligible.

There were also several awards dedicated to male athletes, men's teams, and overall awards that went towards male individuals or teams. The Team Moment of the Year was when Louisville football upset then-#10 Notre Dame, which was the second straight season Louisville defeated a top-10 team at home and rushed the field. 

While our time with some players have concluded like Taylor Roby or are almost over like Gabby Holloway, there are plenty of moments to cherish and remember. We also have plenty to look forward to with other players like Anna DeBeer, who will return for a fifth year in the fall, and Lucy Mehraban, who still has three more years of eligibility remaining.

This is always something to look forward to late into the school year to reflect back on how things went. For someone like me, it's cool to see how many events or student-athletes I have seen in person.

WBB Adds Another -- Louie Awards -- Six Service Award Winners -- Weekend Happenings -- THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Chrislyn Carr Joins WBB

Louisville women’s basketball added another member to next year’s squad. Chrislyn Carr joins the Cards from Syracuse for her final year of eligibility. Standing at just 5’5, Carr possibly qualifies to be an Attack Yorkie? We’ll check with Paulie and Jeff on that.

Carr spent last season with the Orange, ranking second on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Carr scored in double figures in 22 of her 29 games. She started all 29 games for them. Carr shot .440 from the field and .372 from three-point range, both team-highs.

Prior to joining Syracuse, Carr was with Texas Tech and was a force with the Red Raiders. She was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2019 and was in the running for National Freshman of the Year. Besides finishing top two on the team in scoring in her freshman and sophomore seasons, she also was a threat from three-point range.

We are still unsure on how big of a role Carr will play with Louisville, and she joins a crowded guard pool with Mykasa Robinson, Hailey Van Lith, Ahlana Smith, Payton Verhulst, Norika Konno, and Merissah Russell, Zyanna Walker and Jayln Brown. However, Jeff Walz has shown a focus in scorers with the transfer portal this year, which makes sense following two of the top three scorers from last year going pro in Emily Engstler and Kianna Smith.

UofL Names Six for ACC Service Award Winners

Katie Schneider

Louisville Athletics named six student-athletes as the top ACC Service Award winners. Kaylee Wheeler, Katie Schneider, Ashley Osborne, Bradley Sample, Kaden Kozlowski, Dawson Orlowski were the six named to the ACC's Top Six for Community Service.

Kaylee Wheeleer (swimming and diving) works with adaptive sports and programs as well as working as a disabilities ministry volunteer.

Katie Schneider (field hockey) has been present in College Mentors for Kids as well as having done work with both National Girls and Women in Sports events and Martin Luther King Day initiatives.

Ashley Osborne (lacrosse) has been active with several groups including Bless The Block, Operationa Brightside Cleanup, Martin Luther King Day initiatives, and the annual Jack O' Lantern stroll.

Bradley Sample (men's soccer), Kaden Kozlowski (cheer), and Dawson Orlowski are the men's athletes honored and were involved with several different groups and initiatives.

Weekend Happenings

Although campus will be fairly quiet for women's sports this weekend, there is still plenty going on.

Louisville lacrosse is the only women's team in the Ville as they host Notre Dame at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday at noon for Senior Day. The Cards are looking for their second conference win of the season and to close the regular season on a two-game win streak.

Louisville softball is on the road in Blacksburg, VA., against #3 Virginia Tech starting Friday. The Cards are fresh off a sweep against Syracuse and hope to build off of that momentum.

Louisville rowing will be taking part in the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday and Saturday.

Louisville track and field goes north to Bloomington, IN. for the Indiana Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Women's pole vault ranks first in the country and women's high jump ranks fifth.

Louies Student Awards; THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

NOW BATTING...

Hello readers! Daryl reporting here today. Calendar check... No, it is not the weekend already. It is still only Thursday. I am covering today's write up for Jared (he has definitely covered for me plenty of times in the past) and it's my pleasure to do so!   I want to thank you all for the comments on my post from last week... I appreciate the kind words and enjoy hearing from you! 

I did not end up at the Sky/Fever game this past weekend, unfortunately some car trouble on the way up kept us from arriving on time to see the game... I WILL get to a WNBA game this season to catch a former Card.  I'm not sure where or when but it will happen.  

As the seasons have all wrapped up for UofL sports, the university held its 8th annual Louie's Student Awards for the athletics departments.  This award ceremony recognizes teams and individual players on their achievements on and off the field while at UofL.   The full list of recipients below:

A couple things stood out to me... I want to give a shoutout to Celene Funke after a multiple award evening.  Ive had the 'joy and excitement' of watching Celene grow into her role with not just the softball program but the whole university over the last 5 years.  "The Funk" was very visible in supporting other programs on game-days as well as making efforts for social change all the while maintaining an above average GPA.  I want to thank Celene for the thousands of hours she dedicated to the program.  I have so many great memories of her time with UofL...  congrats to Celene on the honor. 

The other award that stood out to both Jeff and myself was the Volleyball squad receiving the 'Comeback Award'.   Maybe I am unaware of the criteria for this award but I'm not sure I understand the award being given to a team that went to the Sweet 16 in back to back seasons.  Perhaps it was because the season was split between the fall and the spring?? Not entirely sure on that front but the volleyball squad raked in four of the ACC's five major honors when the season concluded.  I know the squad has a lot of expectations for next season.  Perhaps any team that 'came back' to campus for the season was the criteria for receiving the award?  I suppose in a COVID year, that is something to celebrate.  Congrats to Volleyball! 

Speaking of awards... Morgan Bentley, Sarah Hernandez, Gabby Kouzelos, Nadege L’Esperance, Delaney Snyder and Maisie Whitsett were named to the All-ACC Women's Soccer Academic Team.  The six recipients was a program best for Louisville. Congrats to UofL WSOC! 

Louisville Lacrosse placed seven student athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team also. Caroline Blalock, Allegra Catalano, Rachel Florek, Ally HAll, Bella Karstien, Alex McNicholas and Paige Richbourg were part of an all-time program best ! 

Congratulations to these Cardinals who embody the term "student-athlete". We are proud of your achievements here at CARDINAL COUPLE ! 

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all student-athletes with a 3.0  for the current academic year will be released in July 

I am making it a short one today since I will be checking back in tomorrow to push a few buttons. Enjoy the weather out there today, Louisvillians!  It's supposed to remain in the 80s today before its another scorcher of a weekend.  Don't forget the sunscreen!

E Throws Big in Louisville Invitational....Softball Tonight...Basketball Musings -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

HENDERSON BEATS HER SCHOOL MARK IN SHOT

Emmonnie Henderson broke her recent record setting mark in the shot put...again...over the weekend in the Louisville Invitational. Last week, in the Alabama relays, she set a personal and meet record...as well as a school record with a toss of 17.50 meters (57-5:00 in feet). Saturday, she threw for 17.98 meters (59 feet). 

Henderson also won the discus throw with a hurl of 51.26m (168-02 feet). Her throw was 18 feet further than the closest competitor. 

Overall, the cardinal women's finished second in the event...scoring 165 points. Purdue won with 195. Louisville's women also fared well in the 3000 meter steeplechase...where Claire Noser won for the Cards. The 4X100 meter relay team (Kelsey Heyward, Bre'Yana Wash, Alexis Gibbons, Raven Grant) came in second and set a new school record with a time of 45.22. Bailey Davis took the 5,000 meter run for UofL, also. 

Next up, he Cards will host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on April 28-29th at Cardinal Park.

SOFTBALL HOSTS LIPSCOMB TODAY

Louisville Softball kicks off an eight-game home-stand tonight with a 5 p.m. contest against Lipscomb at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville (25-13) comes into the contest after sweeping Virginia Tech over the weekend in a three-game series in Blacksburg. 

The Cards step out of the ACC where they are currently 9-4 and in third place behind Florida State and North Carolina. 

Hot at the plate for Louisville is Nicole Pufahl.  "Poof" is batting .395 and has seven home runs and 37 RBI's. The speedy junior center-fielder from Moorpark, CA has also reached base via a hit or walk in her last dozen games. Seven Cardinals are hitting over .300 going into the Lipscomb contest. 

Maryssa Becker (19-7) continues to do work in the circle. She's complied an ERA of 2.13 and leads the ACC in innings pitched with 167.2.

The Cards faced Lipscomb (31-13) last year in Nashville. In a double-header, Louisville fell 2-1 in the first game but won the nightcap 7-1. 

Tonight's contest will be shown on the ACC Network Extra. They've haven't an
nounced the in-booth crew yet, but we're hoping for our pals Daryl Foust and Don Russell. Louisville also faces Western Kentucky tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

WBB at LOUIE AWARDS

-- WBB has had several visitors recently to check out the campus. Ronnie Nwora and Mykasa Robinson have been spotted on the grounds. Two up and coming high schoolers that would be great "gets" for Jeff Walz. Put 'em in the basket and proceed to checkout, Coach! 

-- No transfers in or out of the WBB programs as of Tuesday morning. Unfounded rumors continue to swirl about who has and has not been seen on campus. We're taking this thing down to DefCon 3. When they announce, if they announce...we'll cover it. 

-- A nice turnout of Louisville WBB players at the annual Louie awards last night.
