Teeter and FIBA - Friday Cardinal Couple

Daryl is back to peak button pushing form with her time being split between the Louisville Bats and UofL gearing up for fall play.  So we're using some help side defense here in the Cardinal Couple writing team. Jeff's in the net today, push for a penalty corner opportunity.

Scott Teeter and Canada Lacrosse

Scott Teeter was apparently craving some Tim Hortons and needed an excuse to head back north.

He has been named the head coach of the Canadian Women's National Lacrosse Team.  Of course Teeter has a long history of coaching with the national program of our neighbors to the north, with this just being the latest installment.

The Canadian National team will compete next year in the 2022 World Lacrosse Women's World Championship in late June to early July.  The Championships will be held at Towson University in Maryland.

The team will also compete in the 2022 World Games in a 6v6 version of Lacrosse that features a smaller field, shorter quarters, and shorter shot clock.  We've drawn comparisons between Lacrosse and Basketball in the past, so this would be somewhat equivalent to the 3x3 form of Basketball that many of us have enjoyed recently, with faster pace of play in a condensed space.

The World Games will be in Birmingham Alabama in mid-July.

For warm-ups for these events, the Teeter will lead the teams in Fall Classic and Sixes team events in mid-October.  These events will also be in Towson, MD.

Of course, after making a crack about Tim Hortons, neither Towson, MD, nor Birmingham, AL have any significant availability to the franchise.

FIBA U19 Update

The FIBA U19 World Cup had the day off yesterday, but will back in action today with Payton Verhulst.  The event is in the knockout stage of play at this point with the US team easily dispatching Chinese Taipei, as they're being referred to in this event, also known as Taiwan, on Wednesday with the US tying their own scoring record with 129 on the scoreboard.

Today's opponent is Spain.  The Spanish took easy wins in group play over South Korea and Brazil before narrowly defeating France 65-61.  They eliminated Japan in the first round of knockout play, 71-64.

( WE SHARE THIS GREAT READ TODAY FROM USAB ABOUT INCOMING FRESHMAN MARIYA MOORE...WHO IS CURRENTLY IN COLORADO SPRINGS WITH COACH WALZ PREPARING FOR THE FIBA AMERICAS U 18 CHAMPIONSHIP

As an applicant athlete back in 2011, Mariya Moore (Salesian H.S./Richmond, Calif.) made her way to USA Basketball’s Women’s U16 National Team trials on her own, with the hope many young girls had-- to make the national team.


Being an applicant athlete is tough, as you are competing against the most talented girls around the nation, some of whom were invited by the USA Basketball Developmental National Team Committee to participate, however, this does not mean any one player has a greater or lesser chance of making the team.


In fact, several applicant athletes have made a USA Basketball team and gone on to win gold medals. In 2011, that wasn’t the case for Moore.


It would be easy to give up and refuse to try again, and Moore said she sometimes felt like that, but she refused to let that attitude overtake her.


“Not making it definitely changed my outlook on things,” Moore said. “When I first came and paid my own way, I worked really hard to try to make the team, but I didn’t, and sometimes for me personally, that could bring me down.


“It also just pushed me to work harder so that I would never again have that same feeling,” she continued.


In 2014, she was no longer an applicant, but was instead invited to participate in the USA Women’s
U18 National Team trials, and this time, she made the 12-member roster.


“Coming from being an applicant before lets me know that anyone can make this team; they just have to work hard.”


Back in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this week for the 2014 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team training camp, Moore is appreciative of the opportunity and ready to take on the challenge of playing for a gold medal. The USA will begin play at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship on Aug. 6.


“Training camp has been competitive; intense,” she admitted. “We’re teammates, and off the court we’re cool, but we know when we’re on the court and the ball goes up, we’re going hard every time. And then after it, we’ll be cool again.”


Playing under the instruction of head mentor Dawn Staley (University of South Carolina) and assistant coaches Kim Barnes Arico (University of Michigan) and Jeff Walz (University of Louisville), Moore is trying to absorb and take advantage of every moment, especially when it comes to her interactions with coach Walz, who also will be her college mentor this fall.

As an incoming Louisville freshman, Moore has been on campus for almost two months now, and though being away could result in her having a few things to catch up on, she is happy to be with USA Basketball this summer on a journey she will share with the person who will guide her for the next four years of her life.


“College is definitely treating me well, I’m enjoying it. But being here with coach Walz this summer is special,” Moore shared.

CARDINAL COUPLE did ask The Don if he had any knowledge of the wet goings-on out at UCLA.

His response:

" I don't know nothin' about that or any other supposed activities in
California. Me and Johnny were in Louisville and we got plenty of witnesses.

We was feeding the ducks down by the lake at Cave Hill Cemetery when this happened.

A place of business has to be careful about things, though...you never know when a pipe
might burst, toilet back up or a couple of "collection" guys stop in and leave a
gentle reminder about who IS the real Paulie...and that he shouldn't be messed with...

Going forward...we'd like to extend our hopes and desires that this new aquatic facility
in Los Angeles becomes a success...and that our security and protection services are
available if needed..."

Volleyball falls in 5 games vs. Seton Hall

The University of Louisville Volleyball squad lost their first ever match to the Seton Hall Pirates Sunday in Cardinal Arena...falling 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 13-15. A slow start for Louisville in the final game proved to be the deciding factor. Louisville fell victim to a 6-0 Pirate run and despite tying the match 10 all...could not pass the Pirates in the final eight serves.

Anastasia Artemeva led the way for the VolleyCards with 16 kills and 4 blocks. They ran into hot hitting Pirate slammer Sarah Osmun, though, who had a game high 21 kills.

Emily Juhl and Lola Arsanbekova led the way for Louisville in the first game with a combined 11 kills but the Cards fell behind 6-1 and never led. In game two, Louisville managed to take a 20-19 lead late but surrendered six of the last eight points to Seton Hall.

The Cards came out slow after the break and didn't gain the advantage until midway thru the contest. Reserve Tanya Lukyanenko spured a Cardinal finish with three straight points and the Cards took game three by six points. Artemeva took over in game four for Louisville with four of her kills and the Cards looked ready to win the match in the fifth game.

Louisville (6-5) leaves the friendly confines of Cardinal Arena for their next two...visiting UConn on Friday and St John's on Sunday.

Mark Beckham's UofL women's tennis team met with success in the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing over the weekend. Sarah Miller and Becca Shine won the "B" flight doubles for the Cards...downing a team from Eastern Michigan 8-2. Freshman Julia Fellerhoff had a big tournament for the Cards..reaching the finals of "A" flight singles play before falling in three sets.

She and Mandy Brown teamed up for "A" flight doubles and reached the finals...losing to Akron 8-3 in the championship decider.

Amelia Harris performed well in "C" flight matches...reaching the finals before bowing out in three sets to BGSU's Nikki Chiricosta.

Some catching up to do here on TEAM USA in the World Championships. They won their second game easily over Senegal 108-52 on Friday and outlasted France 81-60 on Saturday. USA was 3-0 in preliminary round action and faces Canada in the quarterfinals Monday.

The France game wasn't as easy as the score would indicate. Facing a tough France defense, USA managed only three points in the opening six minutes of the game. Six costly turnovers had the Americans reeling early but a Tina Charles jumper drew USA back to a 11-10 lead near the end of the first quarter. They never trailed after that but France stayed close in the first half...down only 36-29 at the intermission.

USA pulled away in the third quarter, helped by a 7-0 run featuring Angel McCoughtry and Candace Dupree and pushed the margin to 58-41. Diana Taurasi led the American scorers with 15 points.

Geno Auriemma discussed the difficulties of World Championship play after the US win:

"The difficult thing about this tournament is that you play three in a row early and the players are tired. You really can't practice very much because they're tired and they're not going to get much better because it's only a six game format."

Angel and company face up against 2006 winner Australia after facing Canada.
