SUNDAY SWEEP FOR UOFL WOMEN'S SPORTS -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

CARDS FH, WSOC AND VB ALL GET SUNDAY WINS

A great day for UofL women's sports -- on Floyd Street and out-of-town, as the Cards took care of business with #5 Field Hockey blanking CMU 3-0 in Trager. WSOC knocking off Syracuse 2-1 in Lynn and #6 Volleyball travelling to Durham and downing Duke (in Cameron Indoor Stadium) in a three-set sweep.

FIELD HOCKEY DOMINATES CENTRAL MICHIGAN 3-0

A quick look at the stats in the day's opener, a "nooner" against the CMU Chippewas might indicate to some the Cards won this one in huge fashion. And, to give UofL credit, it was a win where they scored one more than their usual two goals in the win over CMU.

But. UofL took 30 shots in this one, that's right...30 shots in the four quarters, 22 on goal and allowed no CMU shots against them. The Cards had 11 corners, CMU zero.  Give a ton of credit to the  Chips goalie Katie Maxim, she had 17 saves.

The Cards scored five minutes into action, when they fired four straight shots in five seconds at Maxim and Rylie Wollerton got the fourth one home for a goal. The first in Rylie's career made it 1-0 Cards.

Eight minutes later in the first quarter, the Cards got a penalty corner and Emilia Kaczmarczyk followed up on a Izzy Bianco attempt to double the Cards lead.

And, that took care of the scoring until the final 42 seconds of the contest when Jane Ramsey took a pass from Roosje Neve and scored her first goal of the season.

The win moved Louisville to 11-1 on the season and the Cards are undefeated in Trager this season.

WSOC HOLDS OFF SYRACUSE 2-1 ON SENIOR DAY

About an hour after the Field Hockey start, Louisville women's soccer got underway a little further south on Floyd Street against Syracuse. The first half in this one proved to be a defensive struggle, with neither squad registering a goal in Lynn Stadium. The Cards were attacking, but the ball wasn't going in the net. Louisville had an 8 to 4 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.

The second half proved to be a little better for the Cards. Ten minutes in, Betsy Huckaby took a feed from Fiona Gaiber and sent the orb into the next to give Louisville a 1-0 lead. Then, just two minutes later, Addie Chester set up Emerson Jennings for a goal that made it 2-0 UofL.

And that's where the score stayed until the 73 minute mark, when the Orange drew back within one on a score. But, the Cards defense held firm the rest of the way and Louisville goes to 3-7-4 on he season and picks up their second ACC win in six attempts. Syracuse goes to 2-10-2 nd is winless in conference.

A win the Cards desperately needed to keep ACC tournament play hopes alive.

Case and Jared caught up with the seniors after the game for post game comments. I'll post those interviews once I receive them.

VOLLYBALL GETS OUT THE BROOM ON DUKE

The Cards VB closed out Sunday action in Cameron Indoor Stadium and swept Duke out of the facility with a straight-set 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 match win over the Blue Devils.

Duke has now lost nine straight matches to the Cards.

The Cards hit .263 for the match and held Duke to a .183 average. The match win moves UofL to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in ACC play.

Anna DeBeer had 13 kills for the Cards.

SET ONE

Louisville jumped out to a 5-0 lead but Duke battled back to trail by just one at 7-6. The set was still close at 11-10 until kills by Cara Cresse, Anna DeBeer and Elle Glock gave the Cards a 14-10 advantage. Duke got no closer than three points the rest of the way and a DeBeer kill and Duke error on a DeBeer serve gave the Cards the 25-20 first set win.

SET TWO

Duke held an early 5-4 edge, but the Cards got a 11-7 lead on a DeBeer kill and two Glock service aces, A Duke attack error made it 15-10 Cards and a Charitie Luper kill made it 22-15 Louisville. Kills from PK Kong and Elena Scott accounted for the Cards last two points and the 25-18 set win

SET THREE

The Cards rolled out to an early 7-2 lead and forced an early Duke timeout. It was still all Cards, though, a DeBeer kills made it 12-5 UofL and a Duke attack error gave Louisville a 18-11 advantage. PK Kong's kill made it 24-16 Louisville and Aiko Jones ended the set and match win a kill for the 25-1 set win and three set sweep.

Not a bad Sunday at all for Cards women's sports at all...

Cards volleyball downs Duke -- Latest Volleyball Top Ten Seeds --MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

DUKE DOWNED BY UOFL IN FOUR SETS

A Sunday trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke University campus for the Louisville Volleyball squad resulted in a four set win for Cards.

Louisville takes the match 25-15, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-16 over the Blue Devils to improve to a perfect 21-0 for the 2021 season and 11-0 in ACC contests. UofL's win drops Duke to 13-10 overall and 4-8 in ACC contests.

As we've come to expect, the Cards shared the wealth in the road win. Claire Chaussee producing 14 kills, Anna DeBeer and Anna Stevenson following with 13 and Aiko Jones good for 12 kills. The Cards hit a pretty decent .281 for the match, compared to Duke's .212 hitting number.

In the first set, Louisville came out ready to conduct business. The Cards jumped to an early 9-3 lead in the opening set and bumped that up to 18-9 with a 5-0 run in the set. This one could have been an even bigger blowout in the opening set, but Duke managed a 4-0 run late to cut Louisville's lead to 24-15.  Anna DeBeer said "enough" to the Durham school's rally and ended the set with a kill for the Cards 10-point, first set win.

Duke stayed competitive early to open sett two. Louisville led only 8-7 early on and the home squad battled the Cards to a 16-16 tie. But, that would be as close as the Blue Devils could get in the rest of the second set...Louisville responded with a 8-4 run to sit in the driver's seat 24-20 and it was Anna DeBeer once again who closed the door on the Devils with a kill for the 25-21 second set shutdown.

After the halftime break, Duke came out with a renewed purpose. They opened up with the first four points and were tied with the Cards at 10-10 before an Ayden Bartlett service ace for the Cards. Louisville and Duke went back and forth the rest of the set, tied at 17. Rachel Richardson came up with a couple of Duke kills to give the Blue Devils a lead they would not relinquish, though, and despite a Chaussee kill which tied the game at 23-23, Ade Owokoniran put the Devils back ahead 24-23 with a kill and an attack error by the Cards gave the set to Duke by two. Duke is only the third ACC squad to take a set from the Cards this season.

Louisville responded in the fourth set with early kills from Anna Stevenson and Chaussee to grab a 4-2 lead. The Cards were able to stretch that out to 10-6 on a Chaussee service ace and then went on a 11-7 run to grab a 15-9 advantage after a Stevenson kill. It was 18-14 Cards after a kill from Duke's Lizzie Fleming, but the Cards finished with a flourish and ran off the next five points. Louisville took game and match when Duke committed a service error, followed by a Cards block from "The Anna's" to give Louisville the nine-point fourth set "W".

The Cards will put that 21-0 record back on the road again this weekend when they return to the Carolinas for matches against NC State on Friday and UNC on Sunday. No word yet on whether our Jeff McAdams will zap his ride with the battery charger and return for another weekend of negotiating the West Virginia Turnpike and re-visiting the land of Biscuitville and Bojangles..

LOUISVILLE VOLLEYBALL ATOP THE DI WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TOP TEN RANKINGS.

The Sunday reveal of who the Division I women's Volleyball committee thinks the top ten teams are was a pleasant surprise for Cardinal Volleyball fans. Louisville is atop the committee's list, followed by Texas, Wisconsin, Pitt and Kentucky. Rounding out this initial ranking report are Nebraska, Ohio State, Baylor, Georgia Tech and UCLA.

Louisville has defeated the 4,5,6 and 9 seeds in this bracket and that is a good argument for the Cards grabbing the top spot. Yes, there is a lot of Volleyball still to be played this season, but it's a great honor to be atop the pack in this reveal

Volleyball Looks to Set a Record - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Volleyball at Duke to Set a Record

Good morning from Durham, NC.

As was talked about on the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast yesterday, I hit the road after the show and drove to Durham and will be attending the UofL Volleyball match against Duke here this afternoon.

The Cardinals are 20-0 on the season so far with half of those being conference match-ups.  That ties the 2005 volleyball squad for the best "start" to a season for the UofL Volleyball program ever.  Does it make sense to still be calling it a "start" when it's three quarters of the way through the season?  Regardless, the 2021 Cards have the chance to take hold of that distinction alone today.

Duke is a low-to-mid tier team in the ACC this year.  13-9 overall, and 4-7 in ACC play has them tied with Syracuse for 9th place in the conference.

Notable non-conference match ups for the Blue Devils are a five set win over Iowa, a five set loss to Michigan, and being swept by UNC, and yes, that last one was non-conference.  Duke was scheduled to play Michigan State after Michigan, but the match was cancelled, perhaps for Covid reasons, so UNC and Duke decided to play a non-conference version of their rivalry match.

Duke has also played a conference version of the UNC match and were swept again.  They'll also play again as the season finale for the teams.  Otherwise, the conference results are about what you'd expect.  Getting swept by Syracuse is a bit interesting given how similar the team records are.

The other interesting data point was Notre Dame's match with them on Friday which went five with Duke coming out on the victorious side.  This one is mostly interesting because of the utter enigma that Notre Dame is this year.  The Irish are the "box of chocolates" team this year, you never know what you're gonna get.

Who are the threats on Duke's squad?  Ade Owokoniran (6'3") is the kill leader on the team, with just north of 3 kills per set, on par with Anna DeBeer.  Owokoniran is listed on the roster as both a middle and an outside.  I think they've been lining her up outside, but I'm not certain of that.  Otherwise, watch for Gracie Johnson (6'0") and Moorea Woods (6'2"), both outsides tallying just a little over two kills per set.

Feeding the hitters should be Alex Springate (5'9") controlling the offense from the setter position, although Camille Nazor (6'1") stepped into the role Friday evening against Notre Dame.  And the libero for the squad I expect to be Mackenzie Cole (5'10").  5'10" is fairly tall for a libero, though she does get over 4 digs per set, compared to just a little under 4 per set that 5'9" Elena Scott gets.  Scott's numbers may be slightly off because of the great Louisville block keeping fewer balls from getting to her to begin with.

The prognosis for Louisville is good here in Durham.  The Cards should be well rested with Friday off, and the Dukies are coming off of a five set marathon with Notre Dame.  Again, as has been common this season, the Cards are the more talented and more poised team with a squad that has not had radical changes in composition for nearly two years, now.  They were challenged last time out by a very good Pitt squad who were able to bring some minor flaws to the surface and have now had a week of practice to work on those improvements.

Check this live stream out on ACC Network Extra at 1pm.  Hopefully you'll get to hear some of the C-A-R-D-S cheer on the telecast.  We're expecting some area alumni to make an appearance as part of an Alumni Association event going on here this weekend, so hopefully the Cardinal crowd can spook the Blue Devils.

Tennis Hosts the Cardinal Classic

Tennis was the only women's event on the calendar yesterday, with the Cardinal Classic described as a "hidden-dual" format.  I'm no tennis expert, but my understanding is, unlike typical tennis squad matchups in Division 1 where the team will play doubles on three courts and then singles on six courts against the same team, in a hidden dual, the team will play the double courts against one team, and then switch to playing against a different team for the singles courts.

Four teams are playing in the Cardinal Classic, with DePaul, Ball State, and Middle Tennessee joining the Cards.

In action yesterday, the Cards picked up seven court wins (there's no overall match scoring due to the hidden-dual nature of the format).  They swept DePaul on the double courts, won two of the three in doubles against Ball State, and then picked up another two of the six in singles action against Ball State.

The schedule for the event only shows UofL playing against MTSU on singles courts today at noon, so you can head out to the Bass-Rudd if you'd like to check that out.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Everything was back to relative normalcy for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast, if anything with Paulie involved can ever be described as "normal".  Four of us on the call, with Case, Jared, Paulie, and myself.  We covered the big volleyball match vs Pitt on Sunday, the close of the Soccer season, more Field Hockey success in the form of a conference title, and the Women's Basketball Tip-off Luncheon.

We were also able to air Paulie's always-entertaining Tip-off Luncheon interview, which apparently  also doubled as an audition, with the unflappable Sam Purcell.

Thursday Cardinal Couple -- ACC women's sports preview: DUKE

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- ACC women's sports preview: Duke

We've been doing a weekly preview of the ACC women's sports teams and schools Louisville will face in the 2014-15 seasons over the last couple of weeks. Next up...the Duke Blue Devils.

Duke University, founded in 1838, is located in Durham, NC. They joined the ACC as an original member in 1953 and enrollment was recently listed as 6247 students.

Their nickname is The Blue Devils and colors are Duke Blue and White. Their mascot is....wait for it....a Blue Devil.

What exactly does Duke have to do with Devils? And why Blue Devils? Aren't devils supposed to be red? Well, according to their official web site, the Blue Devil name was inspired by French soldiers in World World I, nicknamed "Les Diables Bleus" (French for Blue Devils if you didn't catch that.) These guys were strong, specially trained, fierce fighters dressed in blue capes. When the U.S. became involved in WW I, Les Diables Bleus toured the U.S. to gain support and money for the War and left a lasting impression among Americans.

Duke competes in 12 women's sports...Basketball, Cross Country, Fencing, Field Hockey, Golf, Lacrosse, Rowing, Soccer, Swim/Dive, Tennis, Track and Field and Volleyball.

Duke will be adding Softball as a varsity conference sport in 2018.

We'll look at eight of the squads that the Cards will probably face them in:

Basketball.  Duke finished the season 28-7 and went 12-4 in the ACC. They were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by DePaul in the second round.

Joanne P. McCallie "Coach P" heads up the Blue Devils and she's starting her seventh season as head coach. She returns eight players from last season...notables are Elizabeth Williams, Alexis Jones and Owensboro's Rebecca Greenwell. Coach P recruited well within the class of 2014...bringing in three freshman and receiving a #3 in nation ranking from ESPN HoopGurlz.

Cross Country.   The Duke distance runners finished 4th out of 33 teams in the NCAA Southeastern Regional. They were 5th out of 15 teams in the ACC Tournament and had the top place finisher in senior Julie Bottorff.

Field Hockey.  Former UofL head field hockey coach Pam Bustin led Duke to the NCAA Championship finals, where they lost 2-0 to Maryland. They posted a 12-7 record and went 3-3 in the toughest field hockey conference in women's college athletics.

Golf. Duke's women's golf team won the NCAA Championship in 2014. They also took the ACC Championship and four other matches during the season. They won the Bryan National Tournament by 18 strokes...a tournament where Louisville was also a participant and finished in 6th place...49 strokes back.

Lacrosse. The Duke Lax squad was 11-8 overall and 3-4 in ACC play. They made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, winning three games before falling to Maryland 15-8. They met Louisville early in the season, earning a hard fought 14-11 win over Louisville LAX.

Rowing. Duke rowing faced a competitive schedule and finished fifth in the ACC Championships. They did not receive an NCAA bid.

Soccer. The Blue Devils went 10-9-6 overall and 5-5-3 in the ACC. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament and three games before getting eliminated by Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals.

Volleyball. A program that won the ACC Tournament while posting a 28-5 overall record and 18-2 ACC mark. They surprisingly lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Durham to American in straight sets.

Analysis:

They'll be one of the toughest foes Louisville will face in ACC play. Louisville will have their work cut out for them in hoops against McCallie's superb front line and Duke Volleyball looks to be returning a very strong squad. The lacrosse and field hockey squads will most likely handle the Cards and Duke women's golf...well, they were the national champs...you surmise the rest. Rowing and cross country probably won't hook up until the conference tournament...but both squads look comparable to Louisville's on a talent basis.

Paulie's Favorite Duke memory:

It would have to go back to the summer of 2003...when Sonja and I visited relatives in Burlington and Haw River...a mere 15 miles from the Duke campus. We spent a day checking out the Duke Gardens and Forest, plus the beautiful Duke Chapel and campus architecture. We eventually hit Cameron Indoor Stadium and found it wide open. We walked the bleachers where the Cameron Crazies hang out and also got down on the court.

There were a couple of basketballs in a corner, so we saw no harm in hoisting a few shots. An elderly custodian came out and approached us with a disapproving look. I quickly explained our visit and it turned out he had relatives in Bowling Green. He smiled and his first question was...'Louisville or Kentucky fan?' I guess I answered correctly because he advised me I could take a few more shots if I wanted...my final shot was a "three" from the baseline in front of the bench that was 'nuthin but net'

I figured it was a good stopping point.

My imagination had me with the ball, two seconds left and Laettner and Hill rushing out to block the potential go-ahead goal for the Cards. Minor, Rozier (and Sonja) crash the boards as I launch the pass from LeGree...and Coach Crum jumps to his feet as the shot goes through the net at the buzzer....Denny tossing his rolled-up program into the air. Jerry Jones shaking his head in disbelief as Coach K scowls and slowly walks toward the visitor bench.

Paul Rogers yells over the airwaves "GOT IT!!!!" and a stunned Cameron Indoor Stadium watches the wild celebration...

I know...but...sometimes it's fun to pretend.

Saturday Cardinal Couple -- Volleyball sweeps Duke

.
SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Louisville sweeps Duke 3-0 in Volleyball

-Soccer shuts out SEMO 4-0

-Staff predictions on UofL vs. UK football game

The VolleyCards stayed on the winning path Friday night in the KFC YUM! Center...sweeping Duke in three games before a crowd of 2511. Led by Lola Arslanbekova's 19 kills, the Cards improved to 4-1 on the season with a 25-23, 25-12, 25-17 triumph over the A.C.C. powerhouse.

The Cards jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first game on Lola's first kill of the evening and led 10-7 before Duke went on an 8-2 run and pushed ahead 15-12. The Cards rolled back, though...getting a service ace from Caitlin Welch to tie it up at 16-16 and Gwen Rucker's spike put the Cards ahead 20-18. Duke wold rally to tie the contest at 22-22 and 23-23 but Lola delivered a massive kill shot to give the Cards a one-point lead and Kaitlynn James expertly sent a tip past Duke defenders to give the Cards game one 25-23.

(Not so Cameron Crazies in the KFC YUM Center)
Inspired by the win, Louisville took no prisoners in the second game. A 4-2 early Cardinal advantage ballooned to 15-7 after a Kaitlynn James kill at the net and the Cards...led by three Lola kills, out-pointed the Blue Devils 10-5 the rest of the way to win easily 25-12.

After the halftime intermission, Duke offered a brief challenge..jumping out to a 4-1 lead to start the third game. Behind Lola and Brooke Mattingly, the Cards fought back and took the lead for good when a Lola block gave Louisville an 8-7 edge. The Cards steadily increased the lead the rest of the way...enjoying scores of 12-9, 16-12 and 24-15 before settling for the 25-17 final margin. Of particular note was the third game efforts of Mattingly...who recorded five kills in the final game and three straight during a stretch that saw Louisville go from a 17-14 lead to a 20-15 advantage.

The Cards held Duke to just 17 kills in the final two games after allowing 15 in the first game. Louisville hit .333 for the contest and held Duke to .140. Welch and Lola led the Cards with 12 digs each.

Two games today for the Cards...Marshall at 11 a.m. and Samford at 7:30 p.m. Samford defeated the Thundering Herd in earlier action on Friday.

POSTGAME : ANNE KORDES

(Opening remarks)

" A huge win tonight. Duke is picked to contend for the ACC title and has a great tradition and winning program...so we couldn't be happier about it. I thought our girls played really well and we're working hard to get them prepared. I think their level of execution is at the highest level of any team I've ever coached. And, that's fun...because their IQ for Volleyball is very high. As a coach, you can just let them go out there and execute. We've got a lot of experienced upperclassmen and our freshmen are learning really fast. Tonight was a fun situation because we just controlled the game.

(On Brooke Mattingly's third game effort)

" The reason she didn't come on before the third game is because we weren't setting her. We just got to get her the ball. She is going to be the girl that everybody prays doesn't have a good match. Opponents are going to have to key on Lola, key on Gwen...and if they key on them, it's going to leave Brooke wide open. And, that's fun...because she's taking full advantage of it when they do.

(On Marshall and Samford next)

"Marshall is scary. They've got some Louisville kids on their team and we're the bigger, more established program...so, of course they want to come in here and show us up. I don't ever take anyone lightly. They struggled last year, we beat them last year but it's definitely not a game to mess around with.

Samford...they go through their conference last year and don't drop a match. They'll probably do the same thing this year. They're a very dangerous team. They've got everyone back from last year. Their head coach actually worked for me at St. Louis. He does a really good job of firing them up and they have two senior leaders from Louisville..a player from Mercy Academy and one from Sacred Heart. We always like bringing opponents in with Louisville girls and giving them a chance to play."

*******************************************

Louisville soccer improved to 3-0 on the season with a 4-0 win over Southeastern Missouri Friday afternoon in Lexington at the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational.

Four different Cards provided the goals, Erin Yenney getting the first in the 18th minute of play. That held for the first half...Andrea Distler made it 2-0 Cards in the 55th minute of the second half. Nicole Mitchell gave Louisville a 3-0 advantage a few minutes later and Lauren Nash closed out the Cards scoring.

Louisville outshot SEMO 19-5...Chloe Kiefer had three saves while notching her 12th career shutout.

*******************************************

We promised you yesterday we'd have predictions from our columnists on the UofL vs. UK football game and the troops came through in fine form with their predictions. We even got a prediction from Anne Kordes!  Timmy the Intern has collated the results and totals and predicts Louisville will win. (He's brilliant that way...) Here we go...

Jenny: I'm predicting a 20-3 win by Louisville, That's right, gonna keep the Kitties on a tight leash and only allow a field goal.

Sandy: Louisville 28-0 and it could be a larger spread. There is a reason the UK fans aren't able to make the long distance trip in from Lexington. It is their loss as the return of tickets from their allotment just made more seats available for the home team. Regardless of the prediction of rain, word has it that the Cat fans need to stay home to be close to their Kitty Litter boxes once the upset stomachs begin from the "deluge" of T.D's.

Sonya: UofL wins 35-10. UK's a basketball school, right? This isn't John Calipari or Rupp Arena. This is Joker Phillips taking his first loss of his final season in Lexington. Maybe he and Petrino can team up and open a car dealership or something.

David: Give me Louisville 27-10. I do feel weather might be a factor in the contest, but I don't think UK or monsoon strength winds can slow down Teddy "Bilge" Water. Full steam ahead!

Mark: First games are hard to predict. Louisville is the favorite and the last two games have been close. Could this one go into overtime like the one in 2000...where the Cards won 40-34? Not this time. I think the Cards offense will shine -- even if it is cloudy and rainy. Louisville 23- UK 10.

Paul: Given the weather forecast and first game adjustments...I'll take a 21-14 UofL win. If the rainy weather holds off, add 10 to the Louisville total. If my beer gets diluted...I'm leaving in the third quarter and headed to 80 Under 80 to change socks and play boccie ball.

Jeff: In the rain, huh? Well, that doesn't affect bumping much, but it does make setting a lot tougher. What's that? Wrong sport? Jeff Walz hasn't even started preseason practices yet...Football? It's the UK Invitational but they're not actually going to play UK. Oh. That type of football, the American stuff.
As I understand it, rain tends to keep scoring lower and since we're apparently going to be playing in the Monsoon Bowl, let's say 21-3...Cards winning of course.

Donny: I'm going to go ahead and predict a 31-14 victory for the Cards. I think the first half will be close with the Cards holding a slim 10-7 halftime lead, before they control the second half and win going away.

Anne Kordes: 31-10 Louisville. Charlie Strong doesn't need any motivation from our win over UK Wednesday. He's very fired up for Sunday.
