Behind the Scenes Action - Sunday Cardinal Couple

Volleyball Behind the Scenes

A reminder came our way, a week or so ago, that while we may have a "summer slump" where there isn't all that much going on publicly, there's still activity in our favorite sports programs behind the scenes.

Specifically, we saw a flurry of indicators from Head Coach Dani Busboom Kelly and Associate Head Coach Dan Meske on various social platforms of verbal commitments being made to the UofL Volleyball program for the 2026 year.  Recruiting is one of the activities in these sports programs that is ongoing hot and heavy during the summer.

DBK and Meske used animated gifs of a cardinal bird, each had their own that they used, to indicate they had received a verbal commitment.  Typically a verbal commitment from a player will be accompanied by a social media post from the player proudly announcing their decision as they're not under the same sorts of constraints to talk about the process that coaches are.  Amusingly, however, the coaches are allowed to repost, or retweet, or whatever the term is for the social network, the player's post, which is as good as an announcement from the school for most purposes.

It's important to recognize that a verbal commitment has nothing binding about it, it's just a public statement.  There are no repercussions for retracting or changing a verbal commitment until a National Letter of Intent is signed, which puts the commitment on paper.

So, DBK and Meske tweeted their animated gifs 5 times over the course of a week or so, and four players were quickly identified, and the suspicion is that the 5th commitment was very quickly (within a day?) retracted and committed elsewhere.

In any case, here's who we know about that has committed verbally for 2026:

Blair Thiebaud, from Houston, is a 6'0 setter.  She'll be arriving as Nayelis Cabello would be starting her junior year, which is nice timing.  It will leave the Cards with one year with only one setter on the roster in Cabello, perhaps the coaching staff will gap fill that year with a graduate transfer?

Immediately after Thiebaud, Amirra Bailey shared her commitment.  I've seen Bailey listed at both 6'4" and 6'5" and is a middle blocker.  Similarly to setter, we'll be in need of more middles with 2026 as Cara Cresse and Hannah Sherman finish out their college careers.  Bailey is from Kentucky, relatively local, living in Bowling Green.

Next up is Elli Strecker, another 6'4" middle out of Zionsville, which is basically a suburb of Indianapolis, a region that has been very kind to the Cards in past years, including Cardinal great Melanie McHenry.  Molly Urban, currently on the squad is from Martinsville, about halfway between Indy and Bloomington, and incoming freshman Ava Utterback is from Plainfield a western suburb of Indy.

Lastly, Jordyn Gray will be coming our way from the heart of ACC country, Charlotte, NC.  Jordyn is a 6'1" left side hitter.  While we have a big lineup of left sides on the roster currently, in two years time several of them will have exhausted their eligibility, so we'll need to be reloading.

All in all, the future looks bright with some great recruits coming our way, and some height in them, which is always nice.  You can get great players that aren't as tall, but all other things being equal, it's good to have the height as well.

CCRHP

No CCRHP yesterday as, with the busy holiday weekend, the crew were all over the place with plans.  Paulie was available, and might have been able to record something on his Tascam for posting later, but we decided that was going to pose lots more challenges, and with not a great deal of material to discuss, we decided to take the week off.

We should be back with you next week!

Volleyball News -- TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

 Volleyball News

A couple volleyball announcements came out yesterday, both being good news. With the season around the corner and the Red and Black Scrimmage on Wednesday, we figured news coming soon including the AVCA Rankings.

1Texas (32)15610-0NR
2Wisconsin (15)15220-0NR
3Kentucky (17)14350-0NR
4Washington13550-0NR

6Florida12750-0NR
7Minnesota11300-0NR

Pittsburgh

10Baylor10000-0NR
11Ohio State9810-0NR
12Penn State9020-0NR
13Louisville8060-0NR

Louisville comes in at #13 in the preseason rankings provided by American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Cards are one of four teams from the ACC and one of three teams from the State of Kentucky in the Top 25.

Pitt is the highest ranked ACC squad at #9 followed by the Cards at #13. Georgia Tech and Notre Dame squeak in at #24 and #25, respectively.

Reigning NCAA Champion Kentucky is the top team from the Commonwealth at #3 and Western Kentucky comes in at #16.

Louisville returns nearly their entire starting roster with the exception of libero Alexis Hamilton, who graduated. That roster includes three All-Americans in Tori Dilfer, Anna Stevenson, and Anna DeBeer. DeBeer is also reigning ACC Freshman of the Year. ACC Defensive Player of the Year Amaya Tillman and All-ACC performer Aiko Jones are both on the returning roster.

UofL Volleyball also had other news with the addition of Volunteer Coach Linda Hampton-Keith. Coach LHK comes from NC State, where she was head coach of the Wolfpack for four years. She helped NC State to a 21-12 record and the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win in 2017.

Prior to NC State, Hampton-Keith was the head coach at Arizona State for five seasons that included four NCAA Tournament appearances and a #5 national ranking following a 15-0 start in 2015

"We feel very fortunate to add a coach with Linda's experience to our staff. Linda has a history of success at Power Five schools all over the country. We are excited for what she can bring to our program on and off the court," said Coach Dani Busboom Kelly.

We are excited for volleyball to start up soon with the first official match of the season up at Dayton this coming Saturday. Worldwide will be in attendance (I believe) at the Red and Black Scrimmage tomorrow but I am not sure if he'll make the drive up to watch the Cards vs the Flyers.

Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!

More Offseason Awards -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Schneider Earns Another Academic Accolade

Meghan Schneider can't stop being awarded for her academic achievements. After earning the 2020-21 NFHCA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, the 2020-21 Elite 90 Award for the field hockey championship, and being a finalist for the 2020-21 Honda Award, she's back again with a prestigious honor. Schneider has been named to the Academic All-American Division 1 At-Large First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The team is comprised of 92 players from across all sports in Division 1 athletics. Schneider is one of 21 women on the team to post a 4.0 GPA. She's the first player from UofL field hockey to be named to an Academic All-American At-Large Team since 2009 (Heather Bustanoby, second team) and just the fourth honoree from the program. Jessica Javelet holds the other two, being named to the first team in both 2005 and 2006.

Though Meghan graduated with a degree in biology while minoring in Spanish, we may still see her around Trager in the years to come as her younger sister Katie continues to play for the Cards. As the NCAA commercial says (this is literally one of the only things I'll give them credit for), most college athletes will go pro in something other than sports. It is great to see UofL provide the resources needed to players to achieve their goals off the field as well as on.

Verhulst is National Athlete of the Year

After being named as the Kansas Female Athlete of the Year and Girls Basketball Player of the Year by USA Today last month, Payton Verhulst became eligible for a larger award. On Thursday night, that eligibility came through. While Verhulst was not named the National Girls Basketball Player of the Year by USA Today, she was instead named the Female Athlete of the Year, a heck of a consolation. Verhulst's awards come after she was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in basketball and the Volleyball Player of the Year in Class 4A in Kansas. Bishop Miege won the state championship in both sports this season, with Verhulst at the helm for both. In basketball, she averaged 19.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while she averaged 3.7 kills per set with a 0.239 hitting percentage in volleyball. I'm sure Coach Dani Busboom-Kelly isn't done trying to convince her that there is space on the roster sheet over in Cardinal Arena.

Verhulst's offseason activities will continue today as Team USA kicks off their U19 World Cup run against Italy at 2:30PM Eastern Time.

Volleyball Spring Season to Get Underway -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Volleyball Set to Pick Up Where They Left Off

After an abnormal three-and-a-half month break in the "middle" of the season, UofL Volleyball will get back to work with their spring season today. While this week's action will be just an exhibition against Dayton and there is yet another break between this match and the next, it's the start of a what is a pretty busy schedule. There's also space for another match to fill in next week if Coach Dani Busboom-Kelly wants to try to find an opponent to keep the team sharp.

As a refresher, Louisville is coming off of a 5-2 fall, which puts them in fifth in conference, though they're tied for third with two losses. If Louisville is able to knock off Notre Dame in their first conference game of the spring set, Louisville would move into a four way tie for second at 6-2. The Cards swept Syracuse and Boston College in their double-headers and split with Pittsburgh to end the year. Along with Louisville and Notre Dame, three other teams failed to play eight conference matches in the fall: Clemson, Florida State, and Wake Forest. Clemson and Wake each played six, while Florida State finished their fall with just four matches played.

It's unlikely that these teams would be able to catch up to the rest of the conference, given the tighter spring schedule, but they'll be keen to try, as the NCAA tournament is set to start on April 9th. Particularly, Clemson would like to get more matches under their belt as they sit the highest of those three at 3-3.

For today's matchup, Louisville will get a Dayton squad that is playing their first match of the 2020-21 season, as the Atlantic-10 canceled fall sports completely last year. The Flyers will open their conference season with a double-header next Saturday against Saint Louis. They'll bookend their season that way, actually, finishing with two matches against the Billikens as well at the end of March.

Dayton made the NCAA tournament in 2019, losing to Marquette in the first round after going 20-8 in the regular season and winning the A-10 conference tournament. They played Louisville early in that year at the annual Cardinal Classic, and the Cards swept the Flyers in the last match of the event. Dayton opened 2019 with an exhibition win over Pittsburgh, and, while they went 0-3 at the Cardinal Classic, they took both Texas A&M and Florida to five sets.

The Cards and Flyers will get action underway at 3PM today in the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. Attendance for all spring home matches will be limited to family and close friends, though we've yet to find out if Jeff will manage to sneak his way onto that list. No video is listed for this one, so keep an eye out for a full rundown from Jeff in his write-up tomorrow about the match.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast

Louisville finally suffered their first loss of the 2020-21 basketball season, but it's not all bad for the Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Podcast as we get to recap the bounce-back win they had as well.
