Saturday Cardinal Couple -- Volleyball goes to 14-0 in AAC...Soccer gets their kicks today.

The University of Louisville Volleyball team kept their record perfect in the AAC with a straight set sweep of the UCF Golden Knights (which makes no sense...because it's women's volleyball --- so we'll just refer to them as the damsels in distress today) 25-19, 25-11, 25-14.

This yawner in Orlando was maybe the best the Cards have played all year...if you subscribe to the Anne Kordes logic she delivered after the game. She's learning the Pitino/Walz/best this-or-that we've ever whatever/playbook quite well:

"This was our best all around performance of the season. We controlled both the front and back row and everyone performed incredibly well tonight," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "At this point in the season, you want to be executing your game plan and we did that tonight. I love to see the effort and intensity."

And the VolleyCards did keep it interesting in the first set...there were eight ties early in the game before the Cards broke loose on a 6-1...Emily and Brooke in the engineering booth with two key kills each.

Louisville displayed more of the willingness to allow the distressed damsels to hang around in the second set but the Cards grew tired of a 9-9 tie and went on a 12-1 run...seven straight of those coming from the serving of Caitlin Welch.

In game three, Louisville once again delayed the "boom"...taking a 5-5 tie and accelerating it to a 13-6 lead. The senior slammers...Emily and Brooke...had four kills each in the game.

The Cards skip over to Tampa next...for a running with the Bulls on Sunday. This Florida jaunt will be the final regular season road trip for Anne's crew.

Football isn't the only athletic event getting their kicks on campus today....the Cards women's soccer team starts NCAA Championship play with first round action against the Redbirds of Illinois State today at 1 p.m. in Cardinal Park.

Louisville made the field as an at-large and ISU got the automatic bid for winning the Missouri Valley Conference.

These Redbirds are on a 9-0 streak and face the Cardinals for the first time in history. If our birds fly past their birds, they'll face the winner of the Michigan/Milwaukee first round contest.

Unlike NCAA Field Hockey...who had no idea how to set up a championship tournament...NCAA women's soccer actually has 64 squads in their "big dance". They only give seed rankings to the top four in each region (Michigan is #3) but based on the bracket layout...it appears the Cards were a #6 seed.

Kick it in the net, girls! Many times...

Louisville women's basketball will attempt to be crowned the WNIT Preeseason Champions on Sunday in Norman, OK. against the "Coale-miners"...Sherri Coale's Oklahoma Sooners.

Our illustrious Jenny O'Bryan will have much more pre-game analysis in the Sunday edition of Cardinal Couple. Today, we'll discuss the e-mails and questions I've been getting about Louisville having to travel to Oklahoma to play this final game.

After careful thought and deliberation, I've had a break-through and come up with the Top 10 reasons why Louisville has to travel to Norman to play.

6) LOUISVILLE PRESIDENT JAMES RAMSEY UNWILLING TO HAVE 500 OR SO SCREAMING CATTLE RANCHERS AND FARMERS FROM OKLAHOMA IN THE YUM!

5) LITTLE KNOWN CITY ORDINANCE THAT PROHIBITS WOMEN FROM ENGAGING IN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES ON SUNDAY IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA.

4) MASSIVE Fraternity PRANK BY THE GUYS IN THE DELTA TAU EPSILON CHAPTER AT O.U. INVOLVING FORGED DOCUMENTS FROM TOM JURICH REQUESTING A CHANGE IN VENUE. THOSE CRAZY DELTA'S!!!

Hey, Y'all...we be on the radio this morning! We'll be welcoming Worldwide Jeff McAdams back into the studio and we're offering 2500 free toothpicks to our studio audience.

The program should be a blast today...we're going to secretly replace Jenny's blood with Folger's instant coffee and see how she performs on live air!

Air time is 11 a.m....which gives you plenty of time to get to the bakery and pick up a loaf of marble rye and some hummus before we start babbling!

Women's Golf in Fifth Place in Colorado

TUESDAY @THE COUPLE

- UofL women's golf starts the season

-Lady Cards exhibition hoops

-Game watch party!

The University of Louisville women's golf team got their 2010-11 season
underway this weekend in the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, CO. The Cards are tied for fifth after two rounds of play...Sara Maude-Juneau leading the way with a two round score of 75-67 for a 142 total.

Anna-Karin Ljungstrom (pictured right) is at 144. Sophomore Candace Wiley put together a 75-73 two day total and is tied for 31st. Maria Castellanos sits at 155 and freshman Tara Lyons debuts as a Cardinal at 158.

Injured Laura Anderson did not make the trip and Maike Klien fired a 160 as the Cards alternate. The Cards share 5th place with Illinois and Oregon...the host Colorado State leads with a two day total of 578...Louisville scoring 585.

Juneau had three birdies and an eagle in round two to highlight the competing Cards. The teams finish up the three day event today with a 8:30 a.m.shotgun start. (Many is the time I wished I had access to a shotgun on the links...)

We know now who Jeff Walz's Lady Cards will debut against and it will be in the form of an exhibition game against Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 30th. in the KFC YUM! Center. Game time hasn't been set yet...pending the start time of the Louisville football game against Pitt in Heinz Field that day. Best guess? This BIG EAST matchup isn't one that will be designated as the BIG EAST Game of the Week...too many other and better conference matchups that day...so I predict a 3:30 kickoff and Walz Ball at 7:30 p.m.

Just a guess...knowing the BIG EAST...they'll sell the game to ESPN Ocho Cinco and the gridiron gainers will match up at noon or 7:30 p.m. You just never know about the BIG EAST and their scheduling theories...

Indiana Wesleyan is no hand-picked patsy designed to come in and roll over for the Lady Cards. They went 29-7 last year in the MCC and made it to the semifinals of the NAIA Tournament Championships in March.

The Marion, Indiana school has depth, height and shot well from the perimeter last year. It'll be a good preseason test for the young Lady Cards...with seven new players and only two seniors on the roster this year. OK...it isn't Stanford or Baylor...but the Cards will get tested soon enough...opening the season a few days later against Pat Summit's Tennessee Lady Vols in the downtown Yummy! arena.

Our pals over at CARDINAL DOMINANCE are inviting all to a UofL football game watch party at TAILGATERS for the Oregon State contest. Louisville travels to Corvallis...by plane, train and automobile I suppose...to face the powerful Beavers. The Dominance guys plan on kicking the festivities off at 4 p.m. and food and drink specials will be available at the establishment next to the Parrish House.

No idea on which channel this one is on as of article time. Shannon, Terry, Bill the Goat and Murray the K invite you to join other Cardinal football fans for a fun and action packed afternoon of football viewing. WE'LL probably load up the chimps and a few interns and attend the event. Read all about it by clicking on the link we have here at CC for CD.

This one could get ugly early if Louisville decides to score in only one quarter...like they did against perennial Ohio Valley Conference FCS power EKU. Just put some hogs on the line and give Abe Froman, the Chicago sausage king, a little time to chuck a few missiles down the field.

You ain't gonna be able to run against these Beavers...Charlie.

Who we are and what we do

We are an independent website that covers the joy and excitement of UofL women's sports. We're not about birds here, or trysts with other like-minded couples or major league baseball. We write about women's sports at the University of Louisville. We are non-profit, we run no ads and don't ask you for fees and our writers volunteer their services. The other co-owner and voice of reason....the lovely Sonja...who returns to us on a permanent basis after what can be called an "interesting" time at Rivals. In her words..."you work, slave, research and study for hours and build a site... a women's board. You spend hours on a three column article and several of the readers decide to take aim at you when all you're trying to do is enlighten. I've never seen so many mis-spellings of Louisville WBB players names anywhere...which made me think I was dealing with third graders over there... I have decided to stay off that street and source from here on out and I'm so glad to be back with those who love and appreciate me... not with haters and self-anointed experts " An avid fan of native gardening, hiking and the Smoky Mountains....she loves German potato pancakes and Led Zeppelin....and reminds you to plant native species. I've only seen her mad once (when she was ready to punch out another woman writer who was spreading lies about her) and I've got a feeling that might be a typhoon you want to steer clear of. One of the original writers on the site (with Paulie and David Watson), she has returned. Not as a columnist, but as a proof-reader, confidant and one to bounce thoughts and ideas off of. She's tired of guys with very limited women's basketball knowledge but huge egos calling her out when they are usually chauvinistic, and can be compared to the dog outside barking at something he can't see...We welcome her back and know she'll enjoy the calm waters here. You've got nothing you need to prove or defend with us....you are among those who love you.

About the photos...

CARDINAL COUPLE uses photos from all sources in the daily columns that we present to you. If we've used a photo you have taken and want published credit it for it...just contact us and we'll be glad to do so. Shoot, we might even write a feature article about you and call your Mom and tell her what a good son or daughter you are. WE avoid pictures that may be subject to copyright. Our legal advisors are busy enough chasing ambulances and wheelchairs when they're not trying to figure out trifecta plays at Churchill. Some of the photos are actually taken by the staff of CARDINAL COUPLE. (When we can get the camera away from the chimps). Paulie uses his cell phone to take pictures, too. You have been warned. Please realize that the captions that go with the photos are sometimes parodies. It's up to you to figure out which ones are and aren't. We can't spoon feed everything to you, you know... Jared Anderson is our main photographer and we have loved his work (even his selfies) for many years. Congratulations if you made it this far in your reading! We know...reading stuff like this can be pretty boring but WE have to put it on the site somewhere so that we can say..."hey, there is disclaimer on the site" in case some bozo decides that they want to sue us or something. Like we have any money. We're so poor we can't even pay attention. We even owe bums money.

I was walking down this road once years ago and I saw this guy chopping down a tree. It was hot, the guy was really sweating and I stopped to watch a while. He finally took a break, cracked a can of beer and then asked me if I had a gun. I hesitated before answering but finally told him that I didn't. He said: "That's a darn shame. I'm cutting down this tree because it's my neighbor's and I'm really pissed off at him right now. I was going to just shoot his sorry a$$...but I decided to do this instead. I'm having second thoughts...though." Sometimes, there just aren't enough trees... (I've never chose that particular walking route since..) .

If I'd taken a picture of that guy working on that tree, I'd been glad to share it with the entire world. That's the way WE see other photos out there. Share 'em and create through exposure and appreciation. We provide credit to the photographer when we feel it's needed. We also pay our taxes on time...
