Lax Falls on the Road to Marquette
Louisville lacrosse battled tight with Marquette for three and a half quarters but a pair of late goals by the Eagles gave Marquette a 13-10 win. The Cards drop to 2-2 following the loss.
Marquette jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but Louisville was able to battle back. The Cards trailed 4-3 at the end of the first quarter and continued their run to take a 5-4 lead a few minutes later. The two teams traded goals before a Marquette goal shortly before halftime gave them a 7-6 lead.
The third quarter was also mostly defense, but the Cards held a 2-1 advantage to even the score 8-8. The Eagles scored the first two goals of the final quarter before a Louisville goal cut the deficit to one. Marquette added to their lead with a pair of late goals to secure the win.
Newcomer Ella Berg led the Cards with her first career hat trick. She is tied for first on the team with six goals on the year. The other seven goals on the match were scored by seven different Louisville players.
Defensively, Louisville had a strong showing. They allowed three goals in the second quarter and one goal in the third quarter. The defense struggled in the final quarter though, allowing five goals.
The offense had some challenges as the Cards could not score more than three goals in any quarter. Only one player logging multiple goals is something we aren't accustomed to seeing.
J Pleck saw the entire match in goal and logged 13 saves for a .500 save percentage. Her counterpart across the pitch logged eight saves against 10 goals for .444 save percentage.
The Cards wrap up their road trip at California on Sunday, their first ACC match of the season.
Happy Tuesday and Go Cards!
