Start to Wooo Pig Classic Delayed
Though last week's calendar indicated that the Wooo Pig Classic hosted by Arkansas was set to start earlier this week, the reality was that Louisville's first game was scheduled for today. However, due to inclement weather in the area, all of today's games in the invitational tournament have been canceled. Louisville was due to play Kansas at 1PM today, but that game will no longer happen, and it has not been rescheduled for later in the weekend.
Louisville is set to play Arkansas and Nebraska tomorrow, and there have been whisperings that all of the teams might load up the busses and hit I65 to play at Ulmer in order to get away from the weather. Nothing is confirmed, and there are quite a few logistical issues, but we'll just have to see. Louisville is scheduled to open their day tomorrow at 1:15 against Nebraska before they take on their third ranked team in four games at 6PM against the host, Arkansas.
Gabriela Leon Sets School Record
In the first day of the Track and Field ACC Tournament in Blacksburg, the men's and women's teams put up a combined four podium finishes and both sit in sixth place in the team standings. In addition to the medal winners in the finals yesterday, plenty of athletes qualified for the final track events today. Katherine Coffey and Aliyah Welter finished sixth and fourth in the weight throw and pole vault, respectively, and were both named to the All-ACC second team.
The men and women split with a pair of podiums each. The first on the women's side went to Synclair Savage in the long jump. She set a personal best on her way to third place. The star of the show for UofL yesterday was Gabriela Leon, as she has been many times this season. Yesterday saw Leon break her own school record on the same track she set it on last month. While she continues to set school records and personal bests, Leon was able to finish just second. She was four inches ahead of third place and half a foot ahead of Welter's fourth place finish, but she was beaten by six inches by Virginia Tech's Rachel Baxter. Baxter's winning jump set an ACC record.
Lacrosse Hosts Virginia Tech
Louisville Lacrosse will look to continue its recent success as the calendar turns into conference play. The Cards will host Virginia Tech this afternoon to start their ACC slate. Unlike other sports, the beginning of conference play does not mean the end of non-conference matchups, and Louisville will play non-conference games up until the end of the season.
When the Hokies step on the field, they'll do so as Louisville's most recent ACC victory. In fact, Louisville's win over Virginia Tech last season is their only ACC victory since Scott Teeter took over in 2018. The Cards have looked steadily more competitive throughout Teeter's seasons, but they've yet to break through with a really strong season or an ACC record anywhere close to .500. Coming off of back to back 9+ goal wins, Louisville will look to keep rolling and start their ACC season off with a victory.
Today's game will get off to a chilly start at Noon. If you'd rather avoid the cold, the game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
