Volleyball Wins Again -- A New Era -- An ACC Championship -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Volleyball Sweeps Wake Forest

They weren't perfect but the VolleyCards did it again, this time getting a 3-0 victory on the road at Wake Forest.  As Worldwide mentioned on the show Saturday, the Demon Deacons weren't a huge threat but you can't ever overlook anyone.

It wasn't until the final stretch of the first set that Louisville was able to pull away, winning 25-16.  Wake Forest kept things close for quite some time, bringing the score within 18-16 before the Cards used a 7-0 run to close out the set.

In the second set, Louisville used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 10-4 as the teams spent most of the remainder of the set trading points.  Most of Wake Forest's points in the back half of the set came on Louisville service errors, but the Cards won, 25-18.

The third set was the closest of the match although the Cards seemed to have control, winning 25-20.  Louisville never trailed in this set and lead by as much as seven.  Wake Forest tried to rally with a 3-0 run, but a service error of their own halted that and helped Louisville claim the final two points.

Claire Chaussee hit double-digits in kills with 10, but nine attack errors put her percentage well
below .100.  Jasmine Bennett and Amanda Green each totaled 11 kills with Bennett posted a .526 percentage.

Of their 55 points (75 points from three sets subtracted by Wake Forest's service and attack errors) 46 of them came on assists, a high percentage.  Wilma Rivera had 33 of those assists and Molly Sauer added 11.

Sauer also finished with 17 of the digs with Mia Stander contributing 10 more.  Sauer's digs on the year have reached 432, more than double the next closest player on the team- Melanie McHenry.

Wake Forest was held to .097 on the match.  They actually hit -.048 during the second set (wow!).

The Cards improve to 20-7 on the year and are 13-3 in the ACC.

Louisville will head to South Bend to face Notre Dame on Friday before having a week off to return home to host Georgia Tech on Senior Day on Black Friday.

The Cards have a few student/athletes that they need to get back onto the floor that have been essential contributors, but the group that is getting wins and performing fairly well are reason enough to get out to Cardinal Arena once they come home to play.

Bobby Petrino Fired as Football Head Coach

Men's sports has never been a primary focus here at Cardinal Couple, but football has been making
headlines for all the wrong reasons this year.  Louisville announced yesterday that Bobby Petrino was fired from his position effective immediately.  The buyout is estimated at $14 million.  Quarterbacks coach Nick Petrino, defensive line coach L.D. Scott, and director of operations Andrew Wagner were also relieved of their duties.

Associate head coach and safeties coach Lorenzo Ward has been promoted to interim head coach although there is now a nationwide search for a new coach.

"We want to thank Bobby for guiding our football program to some of the better seasons we have had historically at UofL during his two separate tenures here," said Vince Tyra.  "However, at this team we feel the program needs different leadership and we owe it to our student-athletes and fans to get this turned around."

Petrino's second stint in Louisville is one that we'll need plenty of alcohol to forget.  He is 1-11 against top 25 opponents and is 1-3 in bowl games.  Louisville is 2-8 and winless in the ACC this year.

*The following commentary on Bobby and Louisville Football may not reflect the views of the rest of Cardinal Couple and are personal opinions of Jared Anderson*

Thank goodness he is gone.  The deplorable record, the embarrassing attendance, and the mass exodus of players, which some might be salvaged, show how bad this year has been.  It also shows how great of a quarterback Lamar Jackson truly is.

This was a wise decision by Tyra and a great move as the leader of Louisville Athletics.  He is still cleaning up messes that Tom Jurich left behind including a men's basketball scandal that wrecked the name "Louisville" and a lacrosse scandal that should have been addressed years ago.

I still am a fan of Jurich and everything he has done for this university.  This athletics program became one of the top in the country and he was a leader in Title IX for UofL sports.  How many schools have separate facilities for field hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball?  Several women's sports weren't even around when he first arrived.

However, his time at Louisville appears to have been a little too long and the Petrino 2.0 era was just  one of the final of many mistakes made on this staff.

"You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain," -Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight Rises

With these changes and a completely different atmosphere and mood we should see a completely different look by the team these final two Saturdays including motivation and pride.  Now is the time for fans to fill Cardinal Stadium to support the players and the program.

Men's Soccer Wins ACC Championship

Once again, this isn't women's sports related but we should give credit where credit is due. We know that a lot of the Louisville women's sports fans are also fans of the men's programs.

Coach Lolla and his men's soccer team won their first ever ACC Championship, defeating #4 ranked and 2-seed North Carolina, 1-0.

The Cards also defeated 16th-ranked Notre Dame and top-ranked Wake Forest along the way to claim the title.

Louisville is now in good shape to be named a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament for a third straight time, which will also earn them the right to host through the quarterfinals.

  2. After the initial firing shock, no major surprise. The shock was the season was the tanking of football.

I want to read about UofL WBB, Paulie, and Volleyball!

    Carry on!

    1. I attended my first Cardinal Football game in 1968. With my late father. Since then, I've seen 10 football head coaches (once, of course, twice). I have no doubt I'll see more in the years I have left.

      Change is inevitable.

      We'll talk WBB tomorrow.

  5. Make no mistake: This season will not be fondly remembered by Purdue fans if Brohm up and leaves for Louisville, even if they can’t completely blame him for going home. It won’t necessarily doom the Boilermakers to the Big Ten basement again, but it sure raises the anxiety level and puts Purdue at No. 1 in the "what's coming?" , a measurement of reactions based on what each fan base just watched.

Does Louisville really want another family-based coaching staff?

Hey, UofL is a women's basketball school, right?

  6. Good morning Cardinal friends!

    Arthur here.

This firing was overdue. The Louisville Football team I saw down here when they visited Clemson had already given up. I was watching the players on the sidelines and field, like I like to do,and their actions made it crystal clear that they weren't "into it". Move on, Cardinal fans. You have a lot of exciting events coming up the remainder of this athletic calendar.

In the coaching search, I do hope that Tyra and all involved:

    1) Give Lorenzo Ward a job with the new braintrust. This guy is a treasure. I watched him when they were at Clemson. He was trying to fire players up. He knows the game. And, he'll do a good job as your interim head coach.

    2) Avoid emotion and use common sense in the hiring. I know, I know that Jeff Brohm is the fan's choice for the most part. But, take his Louisville ties and "successes" out of the resume and what do you have? He's suffered some setbacks at Purdue. He's not a strong defensive coach. And, like Bobby, he'll bring in family. Weigh this potential hiring carefully, if he's interested, of course.

    3) Maybe consider a "non-name" coach. There are quite a few up-and-coming head coaches and coordinators at other programs. Most of all, get a guy who knows something about defense as well as offense.

    Good luck.

Paulie, or any of the other fine writers here, I was wondering about Walz's usage of all early in the season. I'm assuming it's just him trying to evaluate all of his squad. Do you think he has that "8 or 9" player rotation figured out yet?

    1. Arthur, it's the mad scientist. I don't profess to have a great knowledge of what he thinks or might come up with.

I do look at this lineup, though, and see a lot of possibilities. I think Coach will continue to put players out there that will be aligned with what the opposition has. While still playing "Walz Ball". How specifically many that ends up being is probably going to be based on how they perform.

      Does that make sense?

  8. Brohm has a direct, unshakeable connection to Howard Schnellenberger, the guy who gave credibility to this idea of the University of Louisville becoming big-time in college football. He's built his offensive philosophy from the Who's Who of Guys he worked or played for, but Brohm started learning in the Schnellenberger Lab.

Schnellenberger once dreamed of Louisville winning a national title and football becoming bigger than basketball in the area. If Brohm comes, it would be another push toward that dream, with a football coach making more money than a basketball coach, something that has never happened at U of L.

Go wrap this guy up, Vince.

  9. All I have to say about football is...they stopped the bleeding. Still have to go through the surgery and rehab.
Watched the Arizona St. - Baylor game, the Shoni shout-out was awesome.
And we're going to have our hands full with Az St.
Glad Walz is playing the new players, from the only game I've seen, looks like Robins (really like her!), Robinson, and Drop will be major factors. Duvall is behind too many at her position, but I like her game. Think Kylee put in good work over the summer, making inside moves now, gonna be the "x" factor this season, I'm.
Shout out to the ACC soccer champs!

    1. Yeah, autocorrect gets me too sometimes. I like it though. Watch Diop drop 20 on an opponent.

Duvall is the toughest little gal I know. After four surgeries and having to watch a season, she's out there playing like her hair's on fire. Lotta love for Lindsey from this guy.

      More of ALL of them!
Duvall has that "I'm a baller" look. Love it.

  10. Well, well, Paulie. There must be dancing in the streets of Louseyville now that Bobby "Latrine-O" has been flushed. They kept the defensive coordinator, though, which means Cats will still win by 40 on the 24th.

Maybe Vince the Tyrant will suit up. He's obviously had a lot of head trauma and collisions, so he's no stranger to contact. That's obvious with some of the decisions he's made. The first being leaving UK to run home to Mama Tyrant.

And, Jeff Potty Mouth - where's Waldo is just starting to see that without Hines-Alibi, he's not nearly the team he had last year. At least My-on-a-leash-ya's family made one good decision -- sending her brother Josh to UK.

Winter's getting closer so it's time for all little birdies to fly south for the season. Especially the "dirty WBB birds".

    1. Good to see you again, Guv! Thought you might still be in a "big Blue stew" after consecutive football losses. How'd those Oranges taste? Or, maybe you were part of the family dust-up when Mom and Dad wanted to turn off the Cats v. Georgia game and big sis went and got her gun to make sure it stayed on the beat-down. Now, that's control of the remote!

as for Matty...ee like to dance in March, not October.

    2. Last time I looked, Terry Wilson was under a pile of Tennessee players looking to hand off to Benny the Snail.

I heard even Dennis the Menace was on campus looking for "Mr Wilson, Mr Wilson?

Matthew Mitchell? Didn't he go into hair-care products or something?

Calimari still looking for his drawers after Duke pulled the Kitty-Kats tail.

Finally, how's your Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams doing? Oh, that's right. You don't play DI in those sports. But I bet the women's hog-calling team is top ten and your women's fatback/lard processing squad is piping hot.

    2. Hey Matthew Mitchell for Governor!

Is it true they give all UK freshmen women's basketball players a book entitled: How To Act Like A College Student"?

Chapter 1. The toothbrush. What's It's For and How to Use It.
Chapter 2. Why Is There a Spoon on the Table?
Chapter 3. Using the dorm shower properly
Chapter 4. Why Wearing clothes to classes is important.
Chapter 5. Vegetables. Can I eat them and where did they come from?

Plenty of one-syllable words and pictures.
