Catching Up On Saturday -- SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

I hope you enjoyed your extra hour of sleep last night.  Or if you're an crazy youngster like Jared, I hope you enjoyed watching your phone switch back from 1:59:59 to 1:00:00.  Me?  I wanted the sleep, and I'm glad I got it.

Rowing

Several sports were in action yesterday, most notably for Cardinal Couple, was Rowing.  The stroking Cards were in action at one of the best named sporting events of the year, in my opinion, The Head of the Hooch.  The Cards participate in this event every year in Chattanooga, TN.  This year the varsity 8s and varsity 4s both took victories, while the Cards gathered a 2nd place finish in the Club and Novice 8s race as well.

Men's Basketball

Men's Basketball held their final warm-up before the season starts against in-town foe Simmons
College.  Simmons College is a Historically Black College located in the Old Louisville area at the corner of South 7th and Kentucky streets.  Simmons offers both Bachelors and Associate degrees in several programs including Religious Studies, Business Entrepreneurship.  The game was not terribly competitive, but that's not really not the reason for these pre-season exhibitions.  Men's Basketball opens their season Thursday night against Nichols State at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center.

Soccer Action

Only two teams in action today.  Men's Soccer start their post-season with the ACC quarterfinals round against Notre Dame.  This one is in Louisville at Lynn Stadium with a 1 p.m. start.

While we're on the topic of soccer, if you'll accept the brief further diversion from typical Cardinal Couple fare.  Congratulations to Louisville City FC for winning the USL Eastern Conference Championship at Slugger Field Friday night.  They defeated the New York City Red Bulls II to capture the conference cup.  NYCRBII had not been scored on at all in post-season until this Friday night's game when LouCity hung 5 on them for the 5-1 win.

LouCityFC, due to scheduling limitations out west, will be hosting the USL championship Thursday night, starting at 8 p.m.  This one is going to be Lynn Stadium as well and they'll be playing Phoenix Rising SC (which, I have to admit, is a pretty good name for a Phoenix sports team) for the USL championship.  If you won't be at Lynn for this one, you can catch the play on ESPN2 and through the WatchESPN app (maybe for those of you that will be at the KFC Yum! Center for the Men's Basketball game.

Volleyball Battle for 2nd

With a pair of conference losses to an extremely good Pitt team, and an always competitive Syracuse
squad, UofL now sits tied for 2nd in the ACC standings with today's foe, Florida State.  The aforementioned Syracuse hold the 4th position.

FSU's loses come to Pitt, which is completely understandable, and an absolute bruiser of a match against Miami.  Miami took the almost 3 hour match (2:57), 30-28, 23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 19-17.  In other notable matches, it took them five sets to dispatch Syracuse, and they did take one set off of Pitt in their match in the Steel City.

This should be a good competitive match today.  We hope that Melanie McHenry has recovered from her illness that kept her out of competition Friday, but know that we have depth that can step up and fill her role well, when necessary.

If McHenry is still too ill to play, I would expect to see her rotation filled by Akela Yuhl in the back row, and Claire Chaussee in the front.  Marijke van Dyke was the first choice for that rotation Friday, but after some struggles, Chaussee subbed in and took great advantage of the opportunity presented to her, pounding 16 hits down and joining in on a pair of blocks and even putting up a solo block of her own.

If you can't make it to Cardinal Arena for this one at 1 p.m., you can catch it on the ACC Network Extra.

Cardinal Couple Radio Hour

I haven't gotten a chance, yet, to go back and listen to the CCRH from yesterday.  I wasn't there due to another commitment during the day, but the Monk and the Pumpkin came in to hold down the engineering duties, while Daryl Foust and Paige Sherrard joined Paulie and Case for the hour.  I expect they spent some time previewing the Women's Basketball season which starts Tuesday.

Donation Drive

I always like the donation drive because I always like to be alliterative.

To be honest, the November donation drive for Cardinal Couple is not particularly something that I like doing.  It's never fun to ask people to give up their hard-earned dollars, but we hope we're putting out a "product" that is worth chipping in a few bucks to defray some of the cost of maintaining Cardinal Couple.

This is primarily a hobby for us, we don't get paid for our work or writing.  My day job to pay the bills is managing routers, switches, and firewalls for a cloud provider network, I'm not a journalist, or a sportscaster, or even a "real" radio engineer by training, vocation, or even, honestly, temperament.  Cardinal Couple has given me the opportunity (also WCHQ FM) to dabble in all of these areas, and for that, I am super thankful as I always relish the opportunity to learn and stretch my knowledge and skills.

A science Youtuber who's channel I follow always says in his videos, "I hope I have earned your subscription."  I hope that Cardinal Couple has earned your support.  I think we do a good job of bringing your the joy and excitement of UofL Women's Sports.  It's an odd little niche that we occupy, but it's one that I think is valuable, and from the feedback we receive, I think many of you agree.

    1. It does look like the game will be a pay-per-view on ESPN Plus or on Cards TV or at ESPN Plus. They do have a wekk long trial period where you can cancel or just pay the $4.99 a month.

There is always, of course, the radio feed on WKRD 8790 AM with the excellent Nick Curran and A.J.

  2. Just have to brag on Arthur and his Tiger Troops tailgate group! The best tailgate I have ever attended! Food, oh boy, food excellent before and after the game. Great company, then, well, the game. Louisville won't hold anyone to under 40 this rest of the season. That defense just looked lost.

    Hard to sit through.

Pulled into Knoxville after the tailgate last night and got home today.

Once again, my sincere and appreciated "THANK YOU!" to Arthur and his crew. Love those guys!
