Louisville women's basketball wrecks Tech 60-50 --SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

Myisha Hines-Allen delivers the goods to send Louisville to semis.

Louisville used a 17-9 second quarter to build a 10 point lead
over Georgia Tech and maintained it in the second half to advance to Saturday's semifinals in the ACC WBB women's basketball tournament.

Myisha Hines-Allen exploded on the Atlanta school for 22 points and 13 rebounds...going 10 for 20 from the floor and the ACC Player of the Year was joined by Mariya Moore with 11 ( a very different way to reach 11 with 1-12 shooting but 9-10 from the foul line) for the Cards 25th win of the season.

Louisville started the contest seemingly unsure just who to throw the orb to. The Cards had seven first quarter turnovers. ..spread among six players ...but managed to eke out a 13-12 first quarter lead.

Asia Durr came off the bench to provide the Cards seven points in the span of two minutes...pushing Louisville's lead to 26-18...and the Cards went to the locker room ahead 30-20. The Cards also got a nice off-the-bench boost from Sam Fuehring...with four points and four rebounds in eight minutes.

Louisville maintained that lead over the final twenty minutes...Georgia Tech never got closer than six the rest of the way. Aaliyah Whiteside got a put-back with 3:03 left in the game to set the score at 56-48...but the Cards hit four free throws in a row to lead by 12 with 1:27 remaining.

THE FRED REPORT

-- 15 for 17 from the foul line is a big capital F for the Cards. 88.2% definitely came in handy in a game where the Cards shot just 34.9% from the floor.

-- Rebounding went Louisville's way with a 45-37 advantage. Dislocated pinky and all...Cortnee Walton grabbed 11 and Fuehring finished with six. Serve up a capital R.

-- Easy shots were so-so for the evening in the paint...where it seemed that Mariya Moore was going for first downs instead of layups and with 28 points in the paint on 63 shots...we'll hold off awarding a letter in this category.

-- Defense was pretty good but Whiteside went off. We'll give a small d here

In earlier action...Miami started the day off with a surprising upset of Florida State 74-56. The Noles were tied at the half 37-37 with the U...but fell apart in the third period with just 18.8% shooting and trailed 52-45 with ten minutes to go. It got no easier for FSU...the Canes went on a 8-3 run to start the fourth and won going away. Four in double figures for Miami. ..led by Jessica Thomas' 21.

Miami will face Notre Dame Saturday ...who demolished
Duke 83-54 in the second game. The Irish began pulling away in the 2nd period...shooting 50% and held a 39-24 edge at the half.

That lead swelled to 62-35 by the end of the third period and five Irish finished in double-figures...led by 14 each from Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey. Notre Dame had no turnovers in the first half and just seven for the contest.

The nightcap featured Syracuse and NC State and the Orange rolled to an 80-61 win over the Wolfpack. Five in double-figures for W's squad...Brianna Butler with 17...including five threes.

Cuse will get the Cards dealt to them Saturday around 2:30.

  1. I actually thought "D" was pretty darn good. Cardinals (especially Jackson) were all over Whiteside the whole game and made her take 20 shots to get her points. She's a darn good player. And most of the rest of the GT offense was pretty much shut down. It seemed like they got half their points off bad live-ball turnovers.

Great efforts by Walton and Feuhring.

Moore shoots better against the 'Cuse, doesn't she???

  4. MHA so fun to watch. This year has been alot more fun to watch than last years team. Seemed like points came harder last year. We had a terrible shooting team then.
One thing we dont do well yet (guards) on defense is make steals and intercept passes. I hope we mature and become more of a ball hawking team next year. Taja Cole (31 min) did well against Syracuse press. No turnovers so that was a positive.
Asia needs to be stronger with the ball as CJW says. She seems slow in the head against the press like the travel she got in the second half. I expected her to be better with the ball than she is. Carter we cant rely on. That's why to see Cole not turn the ball over agaisnt a team like Syracuse was terrific for the future.
