Softball sinks Syracuse...Lacrosse falls to #4 Northwestern -- Monday Cardinal Couple

SANABRIA HITS TWO HOME RUNS IN UofL WIN

The Louisville Cardinals softball team engaged in another slugfest against Syracuse Sunday at Ulmer Stadium and swept the series against the Orange with a 13-7 win.

With the victory, Louisville remains atop the ACC Conference...tied with FSU at 11-1 in conference play. The Cards are 22-8 on the season.

Louisville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning...Sanabria delivering a two-run blast off the scoreboard and Jordan McNary circling the bases for an inside-the-park homer off a deep shot to center.

The Cards pushed it to 4-0 in the fourth and looked to be in good shape until Syracuse chased starter Maryssa Becker with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab a three run lead.

Shelby McCombs came in for relief duties and held the 'Cuse scoreless the rest of the way. Louisville got closer in the sixth with two runs and blew past the Orange with seven runs in the seventh...a two-RBI double from Kayla Soles being the big hit of the inning.

The Cards will host Kentucky next...a Wednesday single game at 6 p.m.  Admission will be $5 for this one.

LAX FALLS SHORT IN NORTHWESTERN GAME

Louisville Lacrosse suffered their third loss of the season on the road at Evanston, IL. to #4 Northwestern 12-10. Louisville also lost to the Wildcats in the second round of the NCAA last year.

The Cards fell behind 1-0 before Faye Brust collected three straight goals...the hat trick being performed in a 2:30 stretch in the first half...to give UofL a two goal edge.

Northwestern responded with six straight goals before Carissa Corbett could tally again for UofL. NU tacked one more score in the remainder of the half to lead 8-4 after thirty minutes.

Northwestern and Louisville played fairly evenly for most of the final half...the Wildcats leading 12-7 late before the Cards came at them with a furious rally to cut the margin to 12-10 before time ran out on Kellie Young's squad.

Lacrosse heads to our nation's capitol next to face American on Tuesday. The #10 Cards (8-3) have only lost to squads ranked in the top five of the NCAA this season.

BOTH UofL BASKETBALL TEAMS DONE FOR THE SEASON NOW

A heartbreaking loss for the UofL men's basketball squad yesterday in Syracuse to Michigan St. 76-70 in overtime. Louisville squandered a eight point half time lead to Tom Izzo's Spartan squad due to atrocious shooting but managed to find themselves on the free throw line with less than five seconds remaining in regulation with a chance to take the lead.

Mangkok Mathiang sunk the first free throw (after a high bounce, roll and drop) but the second bounced free and the Spartans missed a buzzer-beater to send it to OT. Louisville never led in the overtime.

The season is now over for both Pitino and Walz's squads. The underclassmen go back to work almost immediately for next year, though, it seems...Sam Purcell tweeting out that the first practice of the 2015-16 season went well yesterday.

We've had great fun covering the Cards hoops this season and will keep abreast of the progress of the team as they get ready for action in Louisville's second season in the ACC.

In the meantime, there are softball home runs to keep track of, lacrosse sticks to watch in action and other sports that the UofL women's teams will participate and train in. We'll keep you posted on all the Cardinal women's squads' activities here at the fan voice for UofL women's sports.

  1. Paulie I appreciate all the fine coverage you and Worldwide have given us the readers this season on the UofL WBB squad. I am a volleyball/basketball guy, so my involvement her over the next few months won't be as regular but I'll still be reading, so keep up the good work.

No better place to follow Louisville WBB than right here!

  2. Blue Lou....thanks for reading and commenting! IT's been a pleasure having you as a part of the readership! We are suggesting that our readers who come here primarily for hoops consider "adopting" a spring sport for comments and following. Softball is atop the ACC currently and having a fine season. That would be a option. Lacrosse is holding their own in tough ACC and non-conference scheduling and we recommend them as a great group to monitor and support. Track and Field, Golf, Rowing, Tennis....there are a lot of spring options for UofL women's sports fans and we hope all our readers will continue to show the incredible support we've witnessed this year toward WBB in backing these other hard-working student-athletes.

    Go Cards!

  4. Just wanted to second Blue Lou. Your WBB coverage is great and much appreciated. It's not always easy as a fan to get more of an insider's view and you folks do a great job of providing that insight.

  6. Ha...ha...ha...how does it feel to lose to Dayton? At least we were there with them until the end. Your mad scientest dropped his test tubes that hold making shots potions. Poor Jude probably wasn't able to hit the trash can in the locker room she was throwing her tear-stained tissues at. Where was Mugger Mariya Moore? Sara Hambone never showed up either.

Tough way for you little birdies to get grounded in you NCAA flight.

    40-0, 40-0, 40-0 two games away!

    1. OK, Gov. We lost to Dayton, too. No denying that fact. And, we didn't shoot so well, either. 31% bears that out. It was a tough loss, one that our girls will ponder for quite some time I would imagine.

      Other facts or probablities:

      - We made it to the third round. A step further than UK.
      - We'll finish higher in the polls than UK.
      - Our recruiting class for 2015 is higher ranked than UK's
      - Our players didn't do anything stupid off the court to hinder our chances.
      - Although it does appear that the UK MBB team is the favorite to win the Men's Tournament, that has no consequences bearing on a women's sports site.

Enjoy your trip to Indy. I've heard there is still plenty of good lodging available in Evansville and South Bend.

Thanks for reading and commenting this season. You provided us with plenty of good laughs and your opinions.

    2. Put a sock in it Gov. You can't get even 4000 for an NCAA game? Matthew Mitchell for Stumblebum of the Bluegrass!

    3. Congratulations Gov on another season of UK women's basketball underacheiving and underperforming. Watch out for the potholes and speed bumps on the road to Loser Highway. Sure UofL lost to Dayton. Sure UofL lost to UK. I hope that the walls of Memorial don't crumble and cave in after that massive 3000 slunk in and out for an NCAA Tournament game. I guarantee you that Louisville fans would have packed it better if the WBB team had gotten a home 1 and 2 round chance.

    4. Gov - After the kittens have made the final four and played for the national championship a couple times you're welcome to come here and try to gloat. Until then your WBB program will continue to be an ongoing overrated disappointment and every time you show up here spouting off you make more of a spectacle of yourself.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to the actual games in the men's tourney but UK has to go through Wisconsin to get to 40 - 0 and the Badgers are just too good. They're going to send UK and it's ethically challenged head coach to 38 - 1 and create all kinds of tattoo redo issues for several hard core UK fans that have been floating around in the media. You're got five days till the crying starts. Enjoy it while it lasts.

    5. Gov I love your posts!!! You are funny and add some much needed good natured humor to our comment section. I actually agree with some of what you say too! Keep bringing it to us! Your comments are welcome here!!! Though Paulie does beat up on you pretty good with his comebacks!

    6. Thank you for that Wade! The tongue-in-cheek comments I post here don't always necessarily reflect my true opinion. They are pretty much designed to create a little ruckus and generate response and interaction.

As Paulie can tell you, I attended UofL and also catch several UofL WBB games live each year. UofL is my second favorite WBB school (next to Big Blue) and Walz is a visionary genius that you can't help but love and respect.

(Now the evil Gov takes over)

It's a shame he can't recruit anyone who can score outside of 10 feet from the basket. I heard a rumor he'll be attending Matthew Mitchell basketball camps this summer disguised as a blonde point guard from Jersey so he can pick up winning coaching tips, strategies and philosophies. Isn't it ironic that his last teacher (Brenda Frese) is in the Final Four and the guy he has a bromance with (Geno) is also. He was an assistant on the USA team to Dawn Staley (another FF contestant).

Little brother still hasn't caught up yet. Maybe he needs to pursue a good coaching opportunity in a conference that is a little better. The SEC. Maybe Auburn or Florida could toss him a bone. At Louseyville and in the ACC he'll always be a bridesmaid to Miss Muffet and Seminole Sue.
