Louisville WBB takes on the OVC again

.
TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE:

-  Lady Cards face Murray State for first time since 2004

-  And the answer is...

-  Show me the Monny

The KFC YUM! Center will host NCAA Women's College Basketball tonight with a 7 p.m. game featuring the University of Louisville Cardinals vs. the Murray State Racers. The Cards come in to tonight's contest with a 6-1 record and on a five game win streak. Leading the way for Louisville are seniors Monique Reid (16.8 p.p.g). Becky Burke (12.9 p.p.g.) and sophomore Shoni Schimmel (13.0 p.p.g.)

Erica leads the Racers
in scoring.
Louisville brings in a Racer squad that has played their last three games on the road. They fell to St. Louis Saturday 59-49 and have lost their last three games in a row.

Erica Burgess leads the Racers in scoring...the sophomore guard averages 15.8 a game. Joining her in the back court is Mariah Robinson, a junior delivering 11.2 points per game. In the paint, the Racers look to junior forward Kyra Watson, who is currently leading the Racers in rebounding with 6.7 grabs a contest.

Local girls' high school basketball fans may remember Allison Karst, who is a sophomore on the Murray State roster. She played her high school hoops at Christian Academy with current Card Antonita Slaughter. She's a sometimes starter for the Racers this year and is averaging five points a game.

Overall in the series, the Cards are 13-4 against Murray State. The Cards last played the Racers in 2004 and won a 97-45 decision on a Sunday in Freedom Hall. Missy Taylor had 23 points and 14 rebounds against MSU and then head coach Tom Collen called it the best overall game that the (7-4) Cards had played to date.

Missy Taylor was both and
inside and outside threat
for UofL
The main objectives for the Cardinal squad tonight is to keep improving and not get caught looking ahead to Sunday's square off against UK in Memorial Coliseum. We would expect Walz to play a variety of lineups tonight and work on cutting back the high turnover amount that has plagued Louisville several times this season. The Cards blasted out to a sizable early lead in their last two games and that will be something Walz would like to see tonight.

We'll also be watching to see how the Cards do on the boards against the shorter Racer squad. Walz has been working with the squad on releasing the ball immediately after a defensive rebound and getting the fast break working. We'd also like to see Shoni find her eye and have a high percentage shooting night against Murray. She's attempted the most shots of any Cardinal so far this year...but is only connecting on 30% of her launches.

Anyone who attends a game like
tonight's ought to get bring a
free bowl of soup...
For tonight's game, Cardinal Athletics has teamed up with St. Matthews' Area Ministries to provide food to the impoverished in our area. Fans bringing a canned food item to the game can purchase a ticket for only $2. Season ticket holders and those who have already purchased seats for tonight are encouraged to bring canned items as well.

The folks at St. Matthews' Area Ministries do a whole lot of good work for those who aren't fortunate. Why not give them a hand tonight and bring a can to the game? Or two?

Lindsey Wilson freshman Monny Niamke is having a great year
so far for the 4-3 Blue Raiders WBB team. She's started all seven
games this year and is second on the team in scoring, filling up
the rim for an average of 14.9 points per game. She leads the team
in steals (18), assists (28) and is second in....REBOUNDS! (She's only
a generously listed 5'5")

We haven't heard anything differently about her changing her plans
to enroll and play basketball for Louisville next year. The experience
she's gained as a starting point guard this year for LWC will come
in handy as a part of the Lady Cards team.

She's also shooting a torrid 46% from the court and 75%
from the charity stripe. You can never have enough accurate
shooters on a team. Keep showing them the "Monny"...Ms. Niamke!!

  1. With her impressive season at LWC, do you think other schools beside UofL might be going after her? Thanks, I enjoy reading cardinal couple each day.
