Cats top Cards in Softball 4-0 -- Thursday Cardinal Couple

BREANNE RAY'S 3 RUN BLAST GROUNDS CARDS

For five innings at Ulmer Stadium Wednesday night this Louisville vs. Kentucky softball clash was anyone's ballgame. The teams had gone scoreless through four innings...the Cats with two hits, Louisville one. Pitchers Maryssa Becker and Kelsey Nunley were cruising along. The teams had three hits between them.

Becker allowed one run in the top of the fifth, a two out Ansley Smith single and Christian Stokes double down the left field line gave UK a 1-0 lead. The Cards threatened in the home half of the inning...Brittany Sims smashing a double to center and getting to third with just one out...but the Cards unable to push her across the plate.

The sixth was the inning for doom for Louisville (22-9). Two UK singles set the stage for Ray's three run bomb over the centerfield fence and into the crowd of 500 or so gathered on the outfield knolls. The shot made it 4-0 Cats.

The Cards would try to recover. Louisville left two on the bags in the sixth. Two were on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Kayla Soles walked and Brittany Sims doubled to left...setting the stage for Kelsi Jones. Her deep fly to left center was hauled in at the fence by UK centerfielder Sylver Samuel to end it.

Sims had three of Louisville's five hits. Maryssa Becker went all seven innings for Louisville...allowing four runs and eight hits while striking out five. She drew the postgame praise of Sandy Pearsall for her effort. She was not backed up by the Louisville bats.

From feast to famine. Louisville had 33 runs in a three game sweep of Syracuse this weekend. Either Kelsey Nunley is that good of a pitcher (11-5 on the season) or the UK women's sports hex on Louisville isn't ready to fade. The Cards will go to Lexington for a return game on April 21st.

Plenty of softball to be played in the meantime...Louisville with road trips to Virginia Tech, DePaul and Ole Miss and a crucial ACC homestand against co-conference leader with the Cards...Florida State.

THREE CARDS PLAY IN ALL-STAR GAME

Cooper defended by Durr in All-Star game
Asia Durr had 14 points for the East (seven each half) in a 89-87 East win in the McDonald's Girls All-American Game in Chicago Wednesday night.

All three of the UofL 2015 signees (Taja Cole, Sam Fuehring and Durr) that played in the All-Star game received adequate attention on the ESPNU broadcast.Cole finished with 13 points for the East and Fuehring had four...including a nice reverse layup to score against the West in the second half.

It was the first time in UofL women's basketball history that three signees have played in the annual McDonald's Girls All-Star East/West contest.

TURKISH TEAM UNCEREMONIOUSLY DUMPS ANGEL MCCOUGHTRY

Former UofL great and
 Atlanta Dream WNBA star
Angel McCoughtry posted on Twitter via an Instagram
 post
(a picture of her with another woman) that she has come out with and fallen in love.

 The post indicates
she has been discriminated against, they have lost
 family and friends.

Terrible, but
unfortunately, not too big a surprise.

While it should also not
surprise me, but it does,
she was fired/let go/
from her Turkish team
 as a result of her
 posting pictures of her
love.

Hell, it happens here, not a surprise it would happen
 in a foreign country.

She seemed to love Turkey, and she seemed to
have a large fanbase in Turkey.

It saddens us here at CARDINAL COUPLE for her and
the fans. Especially when backward beliefs interfere with
a game and those who play it. We wish Angel a HUGE
season in the WNBA this year and have no doubt that
there will be plenty of European teams waiting in line
to ask the talented Ms. McCoughtry to bring her skills
to their squad. (Thanks to Jenny O for forwarding this)

  1. I thought our new kids looked really good in the MickyD's game yesterday. We may not be too big for the next few years but we should be quick, smart and be able to shoot the rock. Should be fun to watch.

Not a nice ending for Angel in Turkey. Lotsa drama. As you note there will be teams in Europe that will likely be glad to bring her on. About all you can do when you get broomed is dust yourself off and keep going. Success is always the best revenge.

  2. If any of you missed the game Coach Purcell's twitter feed has a bunch of instagram highlight videos of our recruits.

  3. Lots to talk about today.

Virtually everyone in Turkey is Muslim, and Islam is adamant in its prohibition of same-sex relationships, so I suspect that Angel was not surprised when she was let go. It pains me to hear that she and her partner have lost family and friends. Hopefully she ends up in a better place basketball-wise. I'm proud of her.

I watched the entire game last night. A few obvious things - Durr can shoot from deep and get to the rim; Cole is lightning quick and fearless; Feuhring may lack elite athleticism, but she has a big motor and goes after everything at both ends of the court.

Like most all-star games, there was a lot of one-one-one, "it's my turn to shoot" action. But Durr and Cole played unselfishly at times - I loved the looping, left-handed crosscourt pass that Durr threw to Cole - too bad Cole missed the wide-open three.

Both Durr and Cole can create their own shots and distribute. I'm seeing lots of wide-open 10-15 foot shots for Henderson, Moore and Hines-Allen next year.

I especially liked the fact that, in the final two minutes with the game on the line, the three Cardinals were all on the court. (Durr was a starter, Cole was in the second five, and Feuhring didn't get in the game for the first time until relatively late in the first half.)

I finally got to listen to Walz's press conference earlier this week. Lots of good stuff there. He sounded really high on Erin DeGrate. Hope he's correct.

Finally - I am SO tired of losing to UK........

    1. Agree, Mike D. We all knew about the Islam/Muslin teachings and traditions when I was stationed over there and we were warned not to ruffle any feathers. It is a damn shame those prejudices exist still in this day and time. They feel just as strongly that they are right and we are wrong as we feel we are right and they are wrong. A definite inhibitor to world peace and harmony. I didn't venture out much when I was off duty in Istanbul. The NCO club worked just fine.

Screw 'em, Angel. Go make big bucks elsewhere.

  4. I am very proud of Angel. This is not an easy thing to do, but her honesty is refreshing and she can now live her life openly. It is the turkish team's lose and someone else's gain.

I watched the all-star game and was quite happy with what I saw of the Louisville contingent and to a point made earlier, I thought the Fuehring looked quite athletically adept. I am excited about the future of Cardinal women's basketball

  5. Let's allstart practicing our spelling of Fuehring ( I remember it by 'breaking it down' ...FU EH RING) because we'll be mentioning her a lot here in articles over the next five years.

Angel was very kind to CARDINAL COUPLE in our early years by giving us interviews and access to her thoughts and philosophies. She'll always be "our Angel" and we'll always stand behind her in any move or decision that she feels is best for her life and happiness.

Kudos to the "All-American trio" and can't wait for them to bring it with the rest of the 2015 Class and returnees to the court.

  6. Although I was raised in the Baptist church and had a very conservative upbringing, I so believe that Love is Love under God's eyes and if that Love is same-sex, it does not mean that it is bad or taboo.

Ms. McCoughtry, stand for your beliefs and principals. THey may not coincide with all viewpoints that exist in our world, but they are yours and you are certainly entitled to have them.

  7. She doesn't get talked up as much as Durr but Cole had mad skills from what I saw. She may be one of the quickest guards to ever play at the 'Ville.

Angel and Turkey? Time to move on, #35. Money and a fan base available easily elsewhere for someone with your skills.

    1. There you go. Looks to me like Cole has Moriah Jefferson type skills. Has that quickness and extra gear that you look for in a pure PG.

It's early but next year I'm betting a starting five of:

      1 - Cole
      2 - Durr
      3 - Moore
      4 - Hines - Allen
      5 - Between Henderson / Walton / DeGrate

I'd like to see what Brackemeyer & Jones can do before locking down on it

    2. And....drumroll, please! We have our first documented prediction of a possible 2015-16 starting lineup. Thank you, Burn!

I'm going to hold off a bit before discussing possible and potential starters. For some of the reasons that Burn mentioned in his disclaimer and because of other possible developments.

      Ya just never know...

    3. Let's all also work on another Cardinal WBBer. It is Brackemyer. I remember this one because there are only two "e's" and they surround "my".

It takes some work. I remember in the early stages of reporting on Syd, her mom gently reminded me of the correct spelling. I may eventually just start calling her "Nilla"...her twitter handle.

  8. I went to the softball game last night and watched it from the outfield. Where were the hits?

    1. I'm going to give Kelsey Nunley a lot of credit here. She's a darn fine pitcher, has had success against the Cards in the past. Besides Brittany Sims and Whitney Arion, the batters just couldn't figure Nunley out.

    2. Followed softball game on Cards TV. I was also watching McDonald's Girls Game on ESPNU. Four horrible announcers!
