SUNDAY CARDINAL COUPLE:
-Sandy previews the game
-Sandy discusses attendance
(Sandy Walker is a contributing writer to CARDINAL COUPLE. She looks at today's game against St. John's)
Today the #12 Louisville women (13-2, 2-0) are up against the St. John's Red Storm in Carnesecca Arena on Queens, NY. A homecoming for Cards freshman guard Bria Smith. St. John (9-6, 1-1) have won their last two in a row and are tough at home, despite attendance numbers below 1,000 a game. It is possible that Bria fans will be able to offset any "6th. person" advantage the Red Storm is used to having.
St. John's is led by 6'1" junior guard Shenneika Smith who helped the Red Storm beat Providence 57-41 earlier this week with 18 points. She's not the only one Louisville has to worry about, though. Eugeneia McPherson has had ten straight double figure scoring performances this year. Da'Shena Stevens is healthy and will join Amber Thompson inside to pose a strong paint threat. Point guard Nadirah McKenith is also healthy and directs the offense for Kim Barnes Arico. Off the bench, the Johnnies rely on 5'9" guard Keylantra Langley and 6'2" forward Mary Nwachukwu. It should be interesting to see how Louisville's 74-58 season scoring advantage holds up against the multi-talented Red Storm.
I'll also be curious to see the Lady Cards blocking out performance - St. John's out rebounds opponents by three a game. With Louisville out rebounding their opponents by six a game...hopefully this will be an area where UofL will excel.
Control of the boards is a great key to a quick transition game for the offense.
An important road test for the Lady Cards. Emotionally and educationally. Plans to visit the 911 Memorial didn't jell in time. Maybe the Cards can create some memories of their New York trip on the hardwood today.
Today's game is on ESPNU. Cards Radio 790 AM / 101.7 FM will also carry the broadcast with Matt Andrews and Adrienne Johnson. We're always looking for additional feeds and watching/listening options. Let us know in the comments section. We're looking for a Jan. 14th. Rutgers game feed currently.

Louisville women's basketball fans do not have to be told that this year's schedule has been and will continue to be difficult to be a regular body in the seat. Attendance is the primary method that any fan has to show their support of the women's program so we at Cardinal Couple strongly encourage you to come out and support all of the UofL sports teams. The upcoming Lady Cards WBB game against USF at the KFC YUM! CENTER is Wednesday, Jan 11th. at 7 p.m. and a fine chance for you to show your support! BE there!
It is great that WHAS is televising the game and for those of you who just absolutely cannot attend a middle of the week game (like Sonja) we're glad that it is there for you to watch or listen to. Why not both attend and record the contest? Best of both worlds...Also, if you run into media providers for Cardinal Athletics...be sure and thank them and let them know you support their broadcasts. Matt Andrews loves it when Paul compliments him on broadcasts.
Come out and be a part of it. Last season, Louisville was second in the nation for women's college basketball attendance. The numbers for 2010-11:
1. Tennessee 212,128 12,537
2. Louisville 162,892 10,859
3. Connecticut 208,910 9,496
4. Iowa State 159,293 9,370
5. Notre Dame 145,293 8,553
We need fans to hang in there as fans in the seats rather than a potato on the couch. According to the various schools reported "official websites"...this year to date attendance for Louisville is 9,948 per game (higher than Baylor or UConn).
We need to boost this number during conference play. See you at the YUM!
-Sandy
