Friday Cardinal Couple -- Derby is only three weeks away!

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Kentucky Derby appears to be a wide open affair.

-Lacrosse faces gauntlet weekend road trip

(Random notes written while going through college basketball withdrawal symptoms)

It's hard to believe that the Kentucky Derby is only three weeks away. With all the hoopla and excitement surrounding the Louisville Womens' Basketball team's magical run and Rick Pitino's guys winning the National Championship, I will admit that my handicapping and studying of the potential Kentucky Derby challengers is way behind where it normally is this time of year.

It usually takes John Asher's yearly visit with the Sportsmen's Supper Club to get me up in the irons and going to the whip in my quest for Derby Fever...and he delivered again last night in fine fashion...a rousing 30 minute synopsis of Derby's past and present...portrayed only the way Asher can. If there is a current-day renaissance man in our community by the Ohio, it has to be John.

If the Daily Racing Form were to deliver comments on his speech like they do on horse performmances, his might read:

"Broke alertly and pressed the issue early. Kept a solid pace and was full of energy on the final turn. Finished full of run and was much the best today."

His talk also usually indicates to me that college basketball is over and done with for the year.

I'm not complaining one bit. What we saw this year was incredible and so thrilling in college basketball. Miracles, drama, excitement and intrigue...one University playing on consecutive nights for the epoch in college hoops. Serve that up to us again next year.

But...I've received a few e-mails about my prognostications...so, here goes. Like they ever do much.

I'm going to toss out six horses to consider. I'll narrow it down in a week or so. Maybe. Hey, everyone loves a six-pack, right?
Whether it's suds or abs...

Goldencents is a Pitino horse!
Sonja, who gives this racing business a sideways glance and still usually does better than me on Oaks and Derby Day, is enamored with Rick Pitino and Doug O' Neill's horse Goldencents. And, it was a stirring ride that Kevin Krigger gave ol' Goldy in the Santa Anita Derby. At 5-1, he wasn't greatly respected on the "Left Coast"...Flashback catching the even money odds. But, down the stretch, Goldencents was the best and the horse does look like the mile and a quarter Derby distance won't be a problem. I'm still not sold on Krigger as the mount on this one, but Animal Kingdom and I'll Have Another, from the past couple of Derbies have shown that anything can and will happen on that first Saturday in May. Goldencents deserves a good, long look.

Still thinking that Itsmyluckyday is a contender
I was quite high on Itsmyluckyday before the Florida Derby. Even though he ran second to Orb (who I'll discuss later) I though he ran too close to the lead and maybe wasn't ready to contest that distance, that day, that close to the front on the Santa Anita track. I still give Itsmyluckyday a shot at finishing first at Churchill Downs and will see how he trains when he gets to 3rd and Central.

Revolutionary just may mow them all down...
Revolutionary narrowly defeated My Lute in the Louisiana Derby but had to go eight wide on the final turn and jockey Javier Castellano pushed all the right buttons to keep him in the lead. This guy is a strong, strapping three year old and if he doesn't have to come from way behind or go so far wide on the first Saturday in May, he may just grab the lead mid-stretch and not get passed. There just might be a price available too on this Todd Pletcher trained runner.

Normandy Invasion ran a very nice closing second in the Wood Memorial to Verrazano and looks like he'll absolutely love the extra distance that he'll have available to him in that long Derby stretch. He's one that lets the pace develop and then comes swooping. Another thoroughbred that might pack a nice payoff at the window.

Orb gained a lot of fans after winning the Florida Derby
Orb was very impressive in winning the Florida Derby. He gobbled up the field in the stretch and was still full of steam when he hit the wire at Gulfstream. A horse that has made big improvements since he turned three, and one that I'll use in any exotics I attempt Derby Day.

Verrazano is still my guy...for now
Verrazano still remains my top pick. Hopefully, John Velasquez will be healthy enough to ride after sustaining an injury a few days back. I loved the way he romped in earlier races at Gulfstream and my only real worry is if the mile and a quarter might just be a bit too long for him. He's one that likes to contest the pace..and that can be brutal in the Derby. I do think that he's the one they have to beat, though (as of April 12th, 2013) and he's still my top pick.

"And as they hit the wire...From Brooklyn to Staten Island...it's Verrazano..." (Great call by Larry Colmes, Gulfstream track announcer.) The venerable, old bridge in New York has withstood a ton of traffic. Let's hope the equine namesake can, too, at the Derby.

We'll get a true measure of just how much the Louisville Lacrosse team has improved over last season by Sunday...as the "Cross Cards" head out to play the cream of the crop in the BIG EAST.

Louisville starts the challenging weekend with a 6 p.m. Friday square off against #5 Syracuse. The Orange are 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST. After some early season stumbles, they've won five out of their last six...including a defeat of Syracuse. Names that will probably rack up a lot of stats for the New Yorkers include Alyssa Murray, who leads the team in goals and points. Becca Block is the leader of the defense and has caused 21 turnovers so far this year. Kelsey Richardson hangs tough in the net...allowing a scant 8.47 goals a game.

On Sunday the Cards will match up against 9-1 UConn. They're hot lately as well, winning three straight since losing to SU. Girls to watch include do-it-all Lauren Kahn, who leads the Huskies in goals, assists, points, groundballs, draw controls and caused turnovers. She also does the public address call of the game, sells programs and makes popcorn at halftime. Shannon Nee protects in between the pipes and is very efficient...with just 9.55 goals allowed.

(Don't know why...but got this mental image of Coach Young dressed up as Captain Kirk from Star Trek...standing in the middle of the lacrosse field, eyes rasied upwards...yelling "KAHN!!!!!" )

For Louisville, one out of two in the win column this weekend would be very impressive. Sweep them both and Kellie Young deserves Coach of the Year honors. The Cards will need frequent scoring from Nikki Boltja, Kay Morissette, Katie Oliviero and (Cardinal Couple favorite) freshman Cortnee "Dale" Daley. Strong defense from Monica Negron and perfection between the pipes from Ashley Herbst could be the game-decider in each of these.

Thursday Cardinal Couple -- Playing catch up (or ketchup?)

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Softball pulverizes Providence

-Katie Keller one of Top 25 Collegiate Player of the Year Finalists in Softball

-Lacrosse plays Friday

-Cardinal Couple "Pick 'Em" winner

(With all these basketballs, National Championship games and such bouncing around lately...we've fallen a bit behind on other sports and such. Here's some of what has gone on...)

CARDS CLUB PROVIDENCE IN TUESDAY DOUBLE-HEADER

The University of Louisville Softball team was in Providence, Rhode Island when the NCAA Womens' Championship game was played. We're sure they watched it after dispatching of Providence...and, unlike the WBB squad...they romped in fine fashion in two games.

LOUISVILLE 16 - PROVIDENCE 2

The Cards pounded the Friars for 15 hits and five home runs

in the opener...Katie Keller and Maggie Ruckenbrod two round-trippers each and Alicja Wolny with one...in the 14-run win.

Rachel LeCoq (13-4) got the win...pitching four innings of relief and allowing just two runs -- one earned -- and five hits while fanning two.

The Cards tallied one run in the first inning, three runs in the second -- from Keller's first homer -- and a run in the third. With the score 5-1 going into the fourth, Louisville got a two-run fence-clearer with Ruckenbrod's first homer to make it 7-1.

UofL added two runs in the fifth...Keller's second home run with Jasmine Smithson-Willett on board made it 9-2.

A seven run sixth inning followed. Seven hits...including back-to-back home runs from Wolny and Ruckenbrod....Wolny's a three-run shot...to set the final score at 16-2

LOUISVILLE 17 - PROVIDENCE 6

The Cardinal bats remained energized in game two...jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the visitor's half of the opening inning. Providence fired back with two runs but the

JSW!
Cards regained the lead in the second on a three-run homer from Smithson-Willett -- her first ever for UofL -- for a 4-2 advantage.

The Cards tacked on four more runs in the third inning. Wolny had a solo homer and a two-RBI single from JSW made it 8-5.

Louisville really battered the fences in the fourth inning with seven runs and seven hits. Doubles from Whitney Arion, Jordan Trimble, Katelyn Mann and Keller, plus RBI singles from Ruckenbrod and Hannah Kiyohara had Providence outfielders probably thinking they were re-living the bombing of World War II Germany. 15-5 Cards.

The Cards finished the blasting with two runs in the fifth. Taner Fowler's sixth home run of the year scored Ruckenbrod for a 17-5 lead. Providence added a run in the home half of the inning...but the game was well decided by then. 17-6 Cards. Caralisa Connell picked up the win (21-2) allowing just three runs and three hits in four innings.

The Cards return to Ulmer for a Saturday doubleheader against UConn (time for revenge for the hoopsters, ladies!) beginning at noon. The Cards are now 34-6 for the year and 7-1 in the BIG EAST.

Katie Keller is one of 25 players selected as finalists for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.

"Killer Keller" is currently batting .457, tops on the team, and has scored 48 runs, has 43 RBI's and 10 home runs. Her kudos so far this season also include the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week and USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week.

The Player of the Year will be announced at the opening of the 2013 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City on May 28th. The list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists on May 8th. and the Top 3 on May 22nd.

Survive and advance, KK! Keeping hitting them were they ain't and over the fences!

Lacrosse returns to action on Friday with a 6 p.m. start on the road against Syracuse.

The 'Cross Cards' bombarded Marquette last time out. Hopefully, the squad can pull off a huge upset against one of the best in the nation in the Orange.

If you heard our interviews Saturday with Cortnee "Dale" Daley and Kay Morissette, you know they are outstanding representatives for their team and sport, as well as intelligent and excellent conversationalists. And, they're just freshman!

They also got the "CCR" bump...both having great games against the Golden Eagles...after doing interviews with us that we played on the air.

Ask Sara Hammond...we provide the "good" mojo that the girls possess after being recorded an then played on the air with us.

Great. Now the entire softball and rowing teams are going to be stalking us for interviews whenever we're in public...

Truth is, we won't mind one bit. As long as we can get JSW (my favorite softball player) and Jordan Trimble (Sonja's) on the voice recorder. Hey, I had to replace Torrid Tori Collins with someone this year, right? Don't be judgin'. I like to pick' em early and follow them for four years...Jasmine Smithson-Willett has all the tools and talents to be a great one.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Hats off to Keith B., winner of the CARDINAL COUPLE Bracket Challenge 'Pick Em...who went 52-11 in his selections. He narrowly edged out CARDINAL COUPLE staffer JEFF McADAMS, who finished 51-12. Neither had the eventual winner Connecticut as the champ. Jeff has already demanded a recount, audit and polygraph test.

Keith (last name and location withheld per request) is a fairly new advocate for UofL women's sports. He tells it:

" A buddy turned me on to ladies hoops back in Angel's junior year. I made a few games that year but didn't miss a home game her senior year. Even made the trip to St. Louis for the Final Four that year. Got season ticket for me the next season and been a season-ticket holder since then. Work prevented me from getting to a few games this year but I follow on-line or Twitter and, of course, here at CARDINAL COUPLE when I can't be there. I also like softball and volleyball. Haven't made it to any of those games yet, but I definitely plan on it."

Keith is divorced, the father of two boys and works at a hospital. He also likes MMA, the NBA and "Motown and old school" music.

The $25 Chili's CARD is in the mail, Keith and, yes I will take you up on taking me to lunch when you receive it.

Wednesday Cardinal Couple -- Redemption Train halted. UConn93 - UofL 60

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Lady Cards fall in Championship Game by 33

Connecticut stopped the Cardinals in their tracks. The UConn squad that emerged with a new purpose after losing to Notre Dame in the BIG EAST finals didn't miss a beat tonight in a dismantling of Jeff Walz's Louisville Cardinals 93-60 Tuesday night in New Orleans.

The Cards did make a game of it for awhile. Buoyed by a game-opening three from Sara Hammond, Louisville battled the Huskies with skill and smarts for the first six minutes of the game. Bria Smith's free throw with 13:53 left in the first half gave Louisville a 14-10 lead.

You had to believe at that point. The Cards were hitting shots and making free throws. Taking the fight right to UConn and frustrating them...as evidenced by Caroline Doty's flagrant foul, cheap-shot elbow to Bria Smith's face just three minutes into the game.

Then, the wheels fell off Redemption Train. The ugly ducklings and party crashers got tossed by the bouncer.

Bria Hartley scored back-to-back baskets to tie it. Kaleena

Mosqueda-Lewis cashed in on a +1. Breanna Stewart drained a three and then hit a two on the next possession. She scored again with 9:46 on the clock. Hartley nailed two free throws and Mosqueda-Lewis popped another three home to cap a 19-0 UConn run over a five minute stretch...making the score 29-14 UConn at the 8:44 mark.

Three players. Nineteen points. Walz looked on helpless. It was sound, fundamental clutch basketball and you can't coach against that.

And...that was the end of any hopes of Louisville pulling off the major upset. Although the Lady Cards would play the Huskies even until halftime...Louisville went in at the half behind 48-29.

The Cards would offer a brief rally in the final period. Down 60-38...back-to-back threes from Monique Reid (surprise!) and Jude Schimmel had the Cards within 16 points with 13:03 left on the clock.

It was just poking the bear.

UConn responded with a 23-6 run over the next six and one half minutes before Bria Smith hit a jumper to make it 84-52 with 6:20 left in the game.

Breanna Stewart led all scorers...the freshman ending her incredible tournament run with 23 against the Cards. Sara Hammond finished with 15 for Louisville. 11 in the first twenty minutes. 13 in the first 21 minutes. No other UofL players reached double digits.

An incredible run for the Lady Cards, though, this season. a cornerstone in creating an image that isn't based on the Angel McCoughtry effect. An incredible post-season run by  a team that believed, bought in to the coaches teachings and shocked the women's basketball world several times over the last couple of weeks.

Sometimes...you just get beat by a better team, though... and that happened Tuesday night. Congrats to the Huskies.

They were incredible to watch Tuesday night...those Huskies were. And, they have most of their squad returning next season.

It won't be the BIG EAST...instead, the AAC or whatever you want to coin it. Maybe the BIG EAST will take them back...or us, for a season. You don't want these Huskies.

 Oh, boy...

This Cardinal team will be back, however... and a contender again next season. A heartfelt thanks to all the Lady Cards for making this party a fun one to crash. You gave us joy, pride, hope and the incredible, improbable, wild thrill of beating a team that everyone said would not lose. Covering you was a privledge, not a task and very incredible at times. Win or lose, you girls are the greatest.

The future looks bright for Jeff Walz's Lady Cards.

When's the first pre-season game for 2013-14?

Tuesday Cardinal Couple -- A National Championship and one to come in New Orleans!!

LOUISVILLE WINS NCAA MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 82-76 !!

Congratulations to Rick Pitino and the 2013 Louisville MBB squad...overcoming a 12 point first half deficit to defeat Michigan for the title! Luke Hancock's sizzling 14 points in a row earned him the Most Outstanding Player award and Chane Behanan's strong-man board work in the final half gives Louisville their third NCAA title!

TUESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Jenny O'Bryan's report from New Orleans

-Louisville vs. Connecticut

-Walz leaving Louisvlle?

(You already know the task ahead. Defeat the Connecticut Huskies tonight for the NCAA Womens' Basketball Championship. Time to follow the men's lead, LADY CARDS!)

The drive down was uneventful.  We drove until shortly before the men’s game was to tip on Saturday.  It so happens that we pulled over in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to watch the game at a local BW-3.  The place was packed with people, but I have never been in such a crowded space with tv’s blaring and the local population not be at all interested.    I do understand we were in SEC country, where football rules, but it was the semifinals for the national championship!  Growing up in Louisville, KY, regardless of who is playing, everyone is interested and involved, and is at least rooting for one of the teams playing.  Not so.  As it were, there were about 5 tables in the place that were all rooting for Louisville, beyond that, there was very little interest.

We finished the drive that night in to Hattiesburg, MS.  The next morning we looked about the town a bit and drove the last 1 hour and 45 minutes in to New Orleans.

We found our hotel with little trouble, had our car parked for the duration of our stay, and set off on foot to explore a little as we awaited a phone call from the hotel that we could check in and get settled in our room.

We are staying just 2.5 blocks from the Cardinal’s hotel, so we decided to head down there to see what may be happening before the game, a send off from the hotel, etc.  Quite a few Cardinal fans were milling about and we ran in to none other than Cardinal Couple’s very own Jeff McAdams.  He too was in the same dilemma, not able to check in, so we set out on foot so we could all grab lunch.

We decided to eat at a little sidewalk cafe, if for no other reason than we could people watch.  As it turned out the food, while good, was second to the people watching.  It was the perfect spot!  We saw  Also spotted was recently fired Pitt Coach Agnus Bernato who chatted practically our entire lunch with several people, feet away from us.  Brittney Griner, Odyssey Sims, Tennessee Coach Holly Warlick, Louisville cheerleaders and a very interesting local man painted entirely silver.  Curious.
Husky players Caroline Doty, Bria Hartley and Assistant Chris Dailey.

As we were finishing our lunch several UConn fans sat beside us.  A very friendly chat ensued.  Lots of praise from them about Louisville’s run, Coach Walz’s scouting and game planning, and from us, praised heaped on about the growth of their freshman’s play, specifically Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson.  It was a very nice chat, with them wishing us well and hoping to meet us in the finals, for an all Big East Championship.  Turns out it was a great spot to stop.

Jeff, as well as I, got our respective calls from our hotels and parted ways as we each checked in.  It was my hope to make it down to the team hotel for a send off party, but was not able to make it back in time.  We did, however run in to Mayor Greg Fischer in our hotel lobby and chatted a bit.  He had just come arrived from Atlanta, and would be flying back to Atlanta first thing the next day, and hopefully back to New Orleans again.  It was nice to hear his excitement and see him in town, especially since the bigger party was in Atlanta.

I won’t recap the games for you, Paulie did a great job in the Monday edition of Cardinal Couple.   I will comment on the crowd though.  The Connecticut Huskies travel very, very well.  I would agree with a comment in Monday’s edition, easily they outnumbered Louisville and Cal, 3-1.  As far as fans for Louisville and Cal, we were probably evenly represented.  One full section of seats as well as most of a second section held each of our teams, with others peppered throughout crowds.

The Schimmel Clan was there in full force.  It was nice to see, they are like celebrities.  Media was up and down talking to them throughout the night, but more importantly, other Native people coming up and introducing themselves and their young daughters to the Schimmels.  Most of us have likely seen the documentary Off the Rez, and we know the importance of family life amongst the Native population.  Not only that, but, the huge significance it is for young Native girls such as Shoni and Jude to leave the Reservation.  It was very apparent that the Schimmel family as a whole is very, very admired and looked highly upon.  It was very touching to see.

Everywhere we went we would chat with fans.  On streetcars, walking side by side into the arena, riding in elevators, etc.   Everyone with whom we spoke had such high praise for Coach Jeff Walz and the Louisville Women’s Basketball team.   I have that pride in my hometown team all of the time.  It was nice to hear it from other basketball enthusiasts.  Even several Tennessee fans we spoke with, nothing but praise for how Louisville has played this post season.    It is especially nice since it has felt like (before the Cal game) Louisville has not always gotten much respect from national media outlets.  So, it was so very good to hear.  I have been wearing my Louisville gear with even more pride, for both the men and women, who have the opportunity to do what only 1 other school has done in history, have both the men and women’s teams win it all.

Win or lose, though, I could not be more proud of Louisville Basketball.  Our ladies are playing with pride, belief and a lot of heart.  Regardless of what happens tonight with our men and tomorrow with our women, this has been one magical ride.  I feel very blessed to be a part of it!

Geaux Cards!!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

And, so...Cardinal womens' basketball fans, it has come down to this. The NCAA Championship Game. Who will have the hot hand? The prevailing run, the foul trouble, the inside play and the grit and determination to win it all?

We know not yet how the ball will bounce or who will score the most points.

If Louisville pull the upset off, it will be the cherry on top on the deluxe sundae that the Cards have presented to college basketball this season. An unbelievable feat. One for the record books, in many ways.

If Connecticut takes the fight, it will still be an incredible accomplishment in the history of Louisville WBB. The team that wouldn't go home, quit or back down.  The ugly ducklings. The party crashers. The team that captured our hearts, respect, love and imaginations. It's been one doozy of a ride...

Shoni, Bria, Sara, Mo, Jude and the rest...you've gone this far in the journey, Are you willing to take one more step and bring the title home?

Play with clear minds and full hearts. Dance like no one is watching and leave nothing behind as you try to shock the world one more time. Do your best, that is all...we, the fans can ask. We're damn proud of you however it turns out!

MEET THE HUSKIES

UConn offers a multi-pronged offense attack that has nine players who can make an opponent pay if left unchallenged or unguarded. 6'0" sophomore forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a first-team WBCA/State Farm All-American, averages 17.6 points per game and leads the Huskies in scoring. Dangerous from anywhere...she can usually be found on the wing...creating and driving.

6'5" junior center Stefanie Dolson is one of the paint occupants...a favorite of Louisville's Sherrone Vails...Dolson scores 13.6 a contest. She's also an WBCA/State Farm First team All-American. Powerful in the paint, Dolson can also take you outside and punish you with a mid-range jumper.

6'4" freshman forward Breanna Stewart has made rapid improvement as the season has progressed. Dangerous on the boards and a tenacious defender...Stewart tickles the net for 13.5 a night.

5'11" senior guard Kelly Faris is recognized as the best defender in women's college basketball. She also can hit shots from beyond the arc or mid-range and gives Geno 10.1 points each outing.

5'7" junior guard Bria Hartley is the straw that stirs the drink for UConn. Exceptionally quick and fearless with the ball...her totals are 9.1 an outing.

6'4" freshman forward Brianna Banks comes off the bench to give the Huskies a lift on the boards. She's comfortable in transition and produces 7.3 ppg.

6'2" freshman forward Morgan Tuck is another wunderkid for Connecticut. A powerhouse around the rim and shot-swatter, Tuck adds 6.4 a night for UC.

5'7" freshman guard Moriah Jefferson has come of age in the NCAA Tournament and gives Geno another attacking, slashing guard. 4.7 tally.

5'10" redshirt senior guard Caroline Doty has been at UConn since the Declaration of Independence and is a three-point threat from anywhere. 3.3 when the Huskies are playing.

Geno Auriemma is 7-0 in National Championship games.

The two teams met on Jan., 15th in Hartford. UConn defeated Louisville 72-58 in a game that wasn't really that close. UConn had four in double figures that night...Hartley 16, Dolson 16, Faris 13 and Mosqueda-Lewis 12. Louisville was led by Shoni's 14 and Nita's 13. The Cards were 4-15 from three-ball range.

HOW THEY  GOT THERE

UCONN 105 - Idaho 37   (Storrs, Ct.)
UCONN 77 - Vandy 44    (Storrs, Ct.)
UCONN 76 - Maryland 5o (Bridgeport, CT)

UCONN 83- Notre Dame 65  (New Orleans)

Trying to figure out what to do before the game? The DISCOVERY FIT AND HEALTH Channel will show the documnetary "Off The Rez" at 6 p.m. tonight. It's a documentary about Shoni and the Schimmel's that traces her journey from Umatilla Reservation to Portland, Oregon.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Louisville head women's basketball coach dropped a bombshell on the media during his pre-game media Q&A.

He's decided to leave Louisville.

Spurred on by the comments about his pink checkerboard "tablecloth" shirt, he has decided to become a waiter at Geno Auriemma's restaurant. Not just any waiter either. The best waiter and head waiter. You can catch the loquacious and sarcastic Walz at his best at the link below. It's around the 18:00 minute mark of the video.

WALZ WAITS ON NO ONE

We've given the matter deep thought have decided to advise Coach not to sign the contract and take the job. First of all, he stutters. Food orders will get messed up and diners will end up with entrees they didn't originally order.

Secondly, Walz has a sarcastic streak. I might order the veal and he would probably 'bad talk' the dish, my selection and bring scallops instead. I could complain, but who would listen? He'd tell me that if I didn't like, I could leave.

Finally, we all know that Walz is easy to get along with if you do what he says. It's when people fail to do his bidding that they get in trouble. Restaurants are pressure-packed situations. Water refills, coordinating appetizers with salads and making sure the entree doesn't arrive at the table too early or late. Wine selections, pushing the special of the day or a dessert.

The whole tipping thing.

We can see Walz going ballastic on a diner that returns the salad, complains that the drink is too weak, claims he ordered the pasta when he receives the trout and keeps calling for "garcon" to cater to his every whim and complaint. Finally the head chef comes out of the kitchen, "T's" Walz up and puts him on dishwasher assignment.

If Walz is ready to change careers, we would gently suggest he be the lead pit mechanic at an instant oil change place. They have a pretty good game plan when they pull you into that bay and he likes it when people follow game plans. Also, not a lot of conversation when you're beneath the car removing the oil filter, oil pan nut and them putting them back on before the new oil is delivered.

Perfect.

We also surmise that Jurich will probably sit Walz down after the NCAA Tournament and discuss a new contract. That will probably keep Walz around.

After a few years, he can grab the wrenches (or wenches), put on the coveralls and pop on a VO-23 after draining the SAE-30 and hopefully not strip out the lug nut when returning it to the oil pan. Pressure under the clock. Precision.

Or just buy one and own it. He'll be able to afford it.

Monday Cardinal Couple - Cards 64 - Cal 57

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-On to Tuesday...Cards 64-57 over Cal!

"Anything can happen...why not us?" - Jeff Walz

Guess who's coming to the national championship game in NCAA Womens Basketball?

The Louisville Cardinals.

Down by 10 at halftime, Louisville tightened up the defense and the Cards got big scoring from Nita Slaughter and Sara Hammond to win going away in the final minute 64-57. Louisville scored the final seven points of the game after a 57-57 tie with 1:49 to go.

Nita Slaughter had 18 points for the Lady Cards, but five different Cards scored in the final 4:25 to lead Louisville to the NCAA Championship game.

Sara Hammond got a plus one with 1:28 left and after a missed Cal three Bria Smith got fouled and sank two free throws to make it 62-57 with 17.7 seconds left. Another missed Cal attempt and Jude Schimmel added the final two from the free throw line for the final 64-57.

CARDS WIN! CARDS WIN!...THE CARDINALS WIN!!!!

It is the first-ever appearance for a#5 seed in the FINALS in women's NCAA Tournament history.

Believe.

Louisville will face Connecticut, a surprising 83-65 winner over Notre Dame. The Huskies led by 10 at the half, Notre Dame narrowed it to six midway in the final stanza but UConn got a fantastic game from freshman Brianna Stewart and won going away.

GAME RECAP:

The Cards started out with the frenzy that put both Baylor and Tennessee behind early. After Bria Smith scored the first basket of the game on a layup a minute into the contest, a Slaughter three, Vails free throw and Smith steal and layup had the Cards up 8-2 at the 17:10 mark. Cal responded, though, with a 14-2 run over the next 3:40 to take a 16-10 lead after a Gray inside move. Cal had the momentum and the Cards were getting hammered on the boards.

Smith scored again on a layup to cut it to 18-13 with 11:58 left and a Slaughter three had Louisville down only 20-16 a minute later. The Bears responded again with a 10-6 run, capped by Caldwell inside to hold a 30-22 lead and 5:42 on the clock.

Cardinal fans held their breath when Monique Reid went down hard after a collision under the Cal basket at the 5:07 mark and the senior was helped to the locker room. Shoni Schimmel connected on a jumper and then 1 of 2 free throws to pull Louisville within seven at 32-25 and 3:25 showing...but the Bears continued to work inside and pushed the advantage to 35-25 after Boyd scored.

The eye-popping play of the game occurred after that...Shoni on a fast break delivering a no-look, behind the back assist to Jude in the paint...who converted the layup to make it 35-27 with a minute left in the half. Cal scored on their final possession and Louisville found themselves down by ten at the intermission 37-27.

Shoni was 1-7 in the first 20, Sara spent time on the bench with two fouls and Caldwell, Clarendon and the Bears were controlling the boards. Louisville was missing free throws and the Bears were shooting 58% from the field. The Cards need to step up the defense, find some offense rhythm and get a little momentum back if they wanted to get back into the contest.

Whatever Jeff Walz said at the half worked. Louisville fans were encouraged to see Mo come back out with the team after halftime --ready to go. Shoni nailed a three to start the second half. Bria connected at the 18:34 mark and Sara Hammond's inside muscle move capped a 7-0 Louisville run with 16:23 on the clock and the score 37-34 Cal.

Cal wasn't folding the tents just yet. They pushed the advantage back to 41-34 before Nita sank a three to make it 41-37 and 15:03 remaining. The Bears responded with two scores, however...Clarendon's basket had UC in the lead 45-37 and 12:55 left in the game. The Cards needed some answers and needed to stop just trading baskets with the Bears.

Sara Hammond found success inside to cut it to six but Clarendon responded at the 11:14 mark. Nita drained a long range three with 10:55, her fifth of the game and after two Bria free throws and two Jude charity tosses, it was 47-46 Cal and 9:17 showing on the clock. The Cards had clawed their way back into the contest and the New Orleans Arena was rocking with the sound of Louisville fans rallying their team.

UofL then missed out on two opportunities to go back ahead. Sara Hammond scored but was called for a questionable charge and the basket was taken away. Nita Slaughter found her herself wide open under the next possession but missed a point-blank bank shot and Boyd countered for the Bears with a three to give Cal a 50-46 lead. Cal pushed it to 52-46 with 5:19 left and you had to wonder if the Cards had peaked too early and were finished.

They were down 36-19 on rebounds and needed to find a way to get back just one more time.

Louisville was not ready to end the journey, however.

In fact, the Cards had Cal right were they wanted them.

Shoni started the resurgence with a jumper at the 5:10 mark. 45 seconds later, Nita drilled her sixth three of the game. Sara Hammond went to the hoop, missed but got fouled and hit two free throws to give Louisville the lead back at 53-52 and 3:40 remaining in the game. Clarendon gave Cal the lead for the final time at the 3:13 mark 54-53. Bria regained the Cardinal advantage with a drive to the hoop to make it 55-54 and Shoni sank a jumper to make it 57-54 with 2:02 to play.

Cal made a last-gap effort to tie it on a Clarendon trifecta as the clocked showed 1:49. From there on, it was all Louisville.

Hammond scored beneath the basket, a rim-hanging attempt that seemed to take forever to finally drop through the next. Fouled, she sank the ensuing free-throw to make it 60-57 Cards with 1:28 remaining. After a Cal miss, Bria Smith was fouled and sank two from the line to provide Louisville with a 62-57 margin at 17.7 and Jude completed the Cards scoring

with two more free throws four seconds away from the end of the game. 64-57 was the final score.

Louisville held Cal to five points in the final 5:19 while scoring 18. They held the Bears to 20 second half points while scoring 37.

Toughness. Walz challenged them if they had it late in the game and they showed they did.

An improbable but exciting and remarkable ride comes to a close Tuesday night in NOLA. Are the Cards ready to make one more "shock the world" statement? They've downed Blue Raiders, Boilermakers, Bears, Volunteers and more Bears...

Time to cage the Huskies.

Believe.

Although it is WBB's day to shine, we do need to mention that both softball and lacrosse both kicked a little a$$ yesterday as well...

The softball Cards closed out their visit to the BIG Apple with a 8-0. five inning win over St.John. Whitney Arion with a big, 3 run 'tater early to give Rachel LeCoq all the runs she needed in a 2 hit, shoutout performance. Louisville swept the series 3-0 and will now move on to Rhode Island...where they'll face up with the Friars for a Tuesday double-header.

Meanwhile, on the University of Louisville campus, the lacrosse Cards were stifling the Marquette Golden Eagles 19-2. Plenty of scores for our CARDINAL COUPLE darlings Cortnee "Lace" Lacey and Kaylin Morissette. Nikki Boltja and Katie Oliverio filled up the Golden Eagles net as well. Louisville was up 19-2 with about half of the second half to go when Kellie Young pulled the starters and concentrated on ball control, keep-away tactics and kept the score down.
